What is Halloween without the trick or treating? That is the question that started the journey of this episode. A lot of our traditions over the next few months are going to look different this year. Not just Halloween. It’s unlikely that celebrations of US Thanksgiving, Diwali, Hanukkah, or Christmas will have the same gatherings of people they have in the past. And that sucks. And many people feel stuck. And this feeling of being stuck is not exclusive to Halloween where 2020 is concerned. So how do we adapt? And is perhaps perhaps a tool that can help all of us adapt? Part of the new generation of spiritual visionaries and thought leaders, Derek Rydall is the author of the #1 Amazon/Barnes & Noble best-seller EMERGENCE: Seven Steps for Radical Life Change and the world’s #1 expert on the revolutionary Law of Emergence. He has trained top executives at Fortune 500 companies (from American Express to Disney) in empowered leadership and communications, and has coached celebrities and media professionals, including Oscar and Emmy winners, on creating conscious entertainment. Favorite Success Quote “What is before us and what is behind us are small matters compared to what is inside us” “We must remove our bloated sense of nothingness out of the way of the divine circuits” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson Key Points 1. Let Go of Your Ego  Just like Ryan Holiday said, ego truly is the enemy. You need to realize that you are not your ego. Your ego is simply a childish part of you that feels the need to be validated through sex, money, and other empty accolades. If you want to live a life of true fulfillment, then you must first let go of your ego and your need for validation. Be willing to accept yourself as you are and pursue a life that is based on what you truly want and not your egotistical need for validation. 2. You Have Everything You Need to Succeed Within You So many people think that everything they need to succeed is outside of them. This simply isn’t true. If you want to succeed in your life and do the things that you dream of, everything you need is inside of you. You simply have to peel back all of the bullsh!t until you unlock the power within you that was always lying hidden away. You have everything you need to succeed. You have the drive, the discipline, the compassion, the skills, everything. You just have to get rid of all the societal conditioning and external expectations to achieve it. 3. You Cannot Improve Upon the Self Just Your Skills  You can’t improve upon the self. You can only develop new skills and improve aspects of your personality and skillset, but you cannot improve upon the self. While this might sound like an overly spiritual statement, once you understand its validity, your life will never be the same. You can stop wasting time trying to make yourself better and improve who you are, and instead, you can focus your efforts on improving the aspects of your character and skill sets that are lacking. 4.Know Thyself Life is not about accumulating possessions but about how much you possess yourself. If you want to succeed and live a fulfilled life, then you have to know yourself. Know who you are, know what you want, know your truth. Not what society says you are are, not what your parents say, and not what any religion says. Know who you say you are and who you want to be. 5. Where There is No Vision You Will Perish  If you do not have a vision, your life will amount to nothing at the end of the day. You have to have a vision for your life, an ultimate goal of who you want to become and who you want to help. Who do you want to be, who do you want to help, and what you want to achieve. Once you have a vision you can build your life around this.

Dr. Heidi Forbes Öste interviews her niece, Alden Forbes, about her gap year working and traveling in Asia and South America as a solo young woman. Alden Forbes, is a first-year Contemplative Studies and Music Performance student at Brown University. With a sense of curiosity instilled in her from a young age by her globe-trotting parents, she took a year before college to travel. Self-funded and self-designed, her nomadic nine months consisted of homestays, hostels, work-aways, hitch-hiking, and even weeks in a Buddhist monastery. She learned (and is still learning) how to travel as a global citizen, while gaining a broader perspective of the world and its many secrets. Today, even under COVID quarantine, She’s taking full advantage of the opportunities and communities that Brown offers. One of the most important objects she carried across Asia and South America was her ukulele. Music became a unifying force, crossing language and cultural barriers and connecting her with people and places. Now, She’s taking the time to reconnect with her guitar— although it might be harder to carry it in her backpack for her next adventure. On June 17, 1947, (the same day Pan American World Airways began their first regularly scheduled around-the-world passenger service), NBC radio debuted The New Adventures of Philip Marlowe. The radio series was based on the character created by Raymond Chandler in 1932 for the popular pulp magazine Black Mask. "The pulps" as they were often referred to, were inexpensive fiction magazines published until the late 1950s that got their names from the cheap wood pulp paper that was used to create the magazines. Philip Marlowe became popular within the genre of hardboiled crime fiction in which the genre's protagonist is typically a detective who witnesses the violence of organized crime that flourished during Prohibition (1920–1933), while dealing with a legal system that has become as corrupt as the organized crime itself. Rendered cynical by this cycle of violence, the detectives of the genre are often antiheroes and Marlowe is no exception. Underneath the wisecracking, hard-drinking, tough private eye, Philip Marlowe is quietly contemplative and philosophical and enjoys chess and poetry. While he is not afraid to risk physical harm, he does not dish out violence merely to settle scores. The episode featured in today's podcast is the fourth episode of the series that aired on October 17th, 1948. By that time, the series had moved to the CBS radio network and had been retitled The Adventures of Philip Marlowe. Our guest today is British ultra endurance cyclist Emily Chappell who started cycling as a commuter before becoming a courier in London for six years. But she eventually swapped the narrow roads of London Town for the open countryside to challenge herself in ultra races and long distance cycling.  In 2011-13 she cycled across Asia and from Wales to Japan. A year later she took on Iceland. And then in first three months of 2015 it was Anchorage to Seattle, which was great preparation for the Transcontinental Race. Alas after dropping out halfway when she suspected she was having a heart problem which turned out to be painful intercostal ribs, she determined to give it another shot in 2016. She has recently published her second book Where There’s a Will in which she shares that journey. And as well as the complex emotions of winning such an event, she reveals everything that being a woman in events like this entails, from periods to body image and how cycling has helped her battle with depression. Talking Through Lines We Cross We have finally made it to episode 100 of The Walking Dead Talk Through! It seems like it took forever… Well, it took us five years! Thank you, listeners, for all of your enthusiasm and support! We did the first time ever first impressions episode earlier this week, and this time, Mark and I talk through a more detailed analysis of The Walking Dead Season 10 Episode 1, titled Lines We Cross. This episode was written by showrunner Angela Kang, and directed by executive producer Greg Nicotero. Kyle will not be covering the show this season but may appear from time to time. He is behind the scenes this episode, editing (though you may hear that I was going to edit it). A final blast from Fear the Walking Dead… We got a couple of extended pieces of feedback about Fear the Walking Dead’s season finale, S5E16, titled End of the Line from Aaron and Cutter, who also talks about how we have too many characters on both shows and gives us proof! Our more detailed discussion of the season premiere begins 32 minutes and 6 seconds into the episode. Cards are back… We get a return to the use of cards in the episode, with white block text on a black screen. AMC Premiere has a video of the table read for the episode. It was interesting to see how the episode changed from the table read and who wasn’t there. We had: Training Day – There was no Luke and Jules scene during the table read; Dan Fogler wasn’t there during the table read. My guess is that the decision to add that scene was because of something that happens later in the season, and the decision to lengthen this to six acts instead of five.Skin – Called “Stories We Tell” in the table read. Skin is much better, in my opinion. I don’t remember hearing the Highwaymen during the episode? Michonne elaborates on the Rick comment, where she didn’t in the final episode and stops short. Antony Azor wasn’t there during the table read. Callan McAuliffe read RJ’s parts in the table read, and it’s pretty funny.Bird Wisdom – Called “Certain Uncertainty” during the table read. This one had no Negan and Gabriel scene during the table read. I think that the Negan and Lydia scene was expanded but I can’t say for sure. Jeffrey Dean Morgan wasn’t at the table read, and his scenes were read by Ryan Hurst.Sea Dogs – This was called “Daryl and Carol” in the table read. Angel Theory wasn’t there during the table read; Eleanor Matsuura read her pieces. I got a kick out of Norman Reedus’ reaction to some of the lines.New Mexico – There was no card for this one. They split the Daryl and Carol scene into two acts. The original script only had five acts.Lines We Cross – This was called “Where There’s Smoke” in the table read. This act was pretty similar to the table read.Embers – Luke’s lines were read by Avi Nash. He doesn’t call him “Eugenius” in the table read. That was a great addition to the script and it was a lot funnier in the episode. So, are we over-enthusiastic? We are curious about what people who hadn’t been watching Fear think about this season premiere. Did you think it was as good as we thought i

Welcome to this episode of the Cookbook Love Podcast. Today I am excited today to interview Cookbook Reader and RPVC (Returned Peace Corps Volunteer) Elizabeth Flamm. Elizabeth was stationed in Koussouka, Burkina Faso for 27 months from October 2012 to December 2014. At the beginning of her training, Elizabeth was given a copy of Where There is No Microwave: A Culinary Survival Guide. Elizabeth read this book cover to cover while she lived with her host family during the initial part of her assignment. Through the reading of this cookbook, Elizabeth educated herself about how to set up a Dutch Oven once in the village, soak beans, prepare grains, and purchase the staples and spices that would soon become part of her day-to-day diet. Since returning to the states, enrolling and graduating from Marquette University, and now serving as the Chief of Staff at City Year in Milwaukee, Elizabeth has begun to appreciate even more reading cookbooks. While not an avid collector, Elizabeth’s story of her time in the Peace Corps, and her reading of Where There Is No Microwave, points to the fact that compiled collections of curated recipes are a tool for teaching and education of cooks, especially when the cook is learning unfamiliar with the food preparation of different cuisines or countries Now with a kitchen of her own, Elizabeth enjoys cooking for herself and her friends, as well as using cookbooks as a tool to learn about flavor profiles, spice combinations, and recipes that produce good results.  .

Rebecca Petho currently serves as a Relief Society President in her Philadelphia, PA ward. She has spent her career working with non-profit organizations as a fundraising expert and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Leading Saints. Sister Petho grew up in the Gettysburg, PA area in a home where hard work and the expectations to contribute and play a role in the home were emphasized. Those lessons have helped shape the type of leader she has been in her church service in Young Single Adult wards and traditional family wards from West Virginia to Salt Lake City to Philadelphia, where she now lives with her husband. In this episode, she talks about the lessons she learned while immersed in the Young Single Adult culture, the importance of being authentic when serving in leadership roles, and helping others to be authentic themselves. Highlights (11:45) How can individuals avoid getting trapped in culture and traditions? Try to avoid focusing on perceived external perceptions of ourselves (16:30) How has her identity as a Latter-Day Saint woman been shaped by her YSA experiences? Truly embrace the opportunities that are right in front of you Controlling what you can control and embracing it Faith that our lives will come together in a way we can’t even imagine Recommended reading: “Where There is No Vision” – Elder L. Tom Perry BYU Devotional address Identify the things that bring us true joy and finding ways to be involved in those things What did you learn from the YSA culture? So many who are willing to serve and support YSAs, but it becomes an extension of the YM/YW program Provide opportunities for YSAs in the ward to be the true leaders in the ward Help them feel more needed and empower them to be leaders in the ward (29:15) What lessons were learned serving as Relief Society President in YSA wards that have helped her serve in the same calling in a family ward? Examine our self-talk, fears, and past experiences in order to fully embrace the current opportunity to serve Every individual and every ward is different and we must keep an open mind in how we approach our current calling (38:10) What does it look like to be patient with others and allow them to be who they are in our leadership callings? Being authentic with people and knowing who we are ourselves Being willing to allow others to be authentic themselves (41:30) How does she approach leadership while adapting to the needs of the ward A groundwork of order and consistency After those principles are established, allowing for individuality and authenticity Approaching authenticity with humility (51:30) Where do we put our energy?
