Our guest is Canadian Judoka Jessica Klimkait. Jess grew up in Whitby, Ontario and followed in her brother Justin's footsteps when she began to learn Judo at the age of four at the Ajax Budokan Judo Club, in nearby Ajax. Her former coach of 13 years was the club's chief instructor Kevin Doherty; a two-time Olympian. At the age of 19 Jess moved to the Canadian Team Training Center in Montreal. She has been on Team Canada since 2014 where she competed in the 2015 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China finishing fifth in the 63kg division. In the same year, Jess competed in her first IJF World Tour event at the Zagreb Grand Prix before taking part at her first two IJF Junior World Championships. She established herself in the senior ranks in 2017 by winning gold at the Pan American Championships before earning her first Grand Slam podium when claiming bronze in Ekaterinburg. Jess became the second Canadian to win a world title in judo at the 2021 IJF World Championships in Budapest. In her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, Jess won the bronze medal in the 57kg category, becoming the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic medal in judo. She is passionate about encouraging girls to take up combat sports, which she has found develops confidence and a body positive attitude. Jess also explains ways to reduce the drop-out rates of teenage girls in sport.Host: Chris StaffordRecorded: February 2, 2022For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Courtenay Tuxhorn, 44, is an amateur 3-day event rider originally from Harwood, Maryland. She grew up working and riding on a family friend's thoroughbred farm, galloping racehorses and dabbling in the hunters and jumpers. Her life revolved around the barn until she graduated college, when the reality of an entry-level job in a big city lured her out of the saddle and in search of new sports. She took up cycling and triathlon and raced professionally with some of the best women in the world. Some of her career highlights include overall female wins at the 2013 American Discovery Trail Marathon in Colorado, the 2009 Danskin Seattle Triathlon, and the 2010 Maryland Half Marathon; representing the U.S. at ITU Duathlon World Championships in 2011; and standing on numerous podiums at bike races across California. After over a dozen years of racing, Courtenay decided it was time to get back to horses. She took stock of the modern sport horse landscape to see where her favorite breed -- the thoroughbred -- excels, and decided to pursue eventing. In early 2017, she found a racehorse ready for his second career at Laurel Park Racetrack in Maryland, and the two of them began learning the sport together. Courtenay and BA Messenger, aka "Bam", completed their first FEI event in 2021, the CCI 2*-Long at the Tryon International. We hear how Courtney came to circle back to her first passion and whaat's next for her and Bam.Host: Chris StaffordRecorded: January 31, 2022For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. As 2021 comes to a close we look back at what has been an extraordinary year for women in sport. We have each chosen a handful of remarkable performances from a variety of sports, which will always be stand-out achievements, personal bests for the athletes and go down in the history of their sport. There are so many adjectives to describe what women have accomplished this year as the standards continue to improve, and records are continually broken. There is nothing to compare with the guts and determination of these dedicated athletes whose goals may have been achieved this year but new ones will be set for the future. It has been and continues to be a thrill to watch women continue to soar to greater heights in their sports and show what is possible. And just when we think that a record that cannot be broken we see another generation break down barriers, train even harder, take on tougher competition and excel in themselves while showing the world the potential for women in any sport, anywhere in the world.Chris' pick:Team Canada Football Olympic Gold MedalistsMolly Seidel, Olympic Marathon Bronze MedalistCarissa Moore, Olympic Surfing ChampionJessica Fox, Olympic Slalom Canoeing Gold MedalistJamie Chadwick, W Series Motor Racing ChampionTeam GB European Eventing ChampionsRachael Blackmore, Grand National Winner (also Nancy's pick)Emma Raducanu, US Open Tennis Champion (also Nancy's pick)Nancy's pick:Elaine Thompson-Herah, 100m and 200m Olympic ChampionFallon Sherrock, first woman to win a Professional Darts ChampionshipThe Hundred Cricket Opener at The Oval Cricket Ground.Hosts: Chris Stafford & Nancy GillenRecorded: December 21, 2021For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Kirstin reviews the Indian Wells Ironman 70.3 in La Quinta California that she competed in this past weekend. It was a race with some ups and downs as many of them are. We also cover the signs and symptoms of the start of thermoregulation issues, to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If you know the signs and symptoms as an athlete you can catch them before they turn into a more serious issue, and you may be able to help out a fellow athlete as well. Kirstin shares some potential pitfalls when it comes to using certain recovery modalities at the wrong time. Recovery is something we talk about a lot on this podcast because, well… if you're going to do the workout, you might as well try to get the most out of it right? But there are certain scenarios where the latest and greatest and "fancy" tools and things are actually creating more of a problem for the body than helping. We also cover some tried and true recovery methods that don't cause deficits and are always going to be helpful no matter what is happening with your body.Host: Dr. Kirstin LauritzenRecorded: November 29, 2021For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. On this week's episode, Nicole talks to some #disruptHERS colleagues — Drs. Katie Lebel, Nancy Lough, and Ann Pegoraro — about recent disruptions in women's sport, which continue to make headlines. They begin with the recent situation surrounding Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai, 35, a three-time Olympian, who has been missing since November 2, when she used social media to accuse Zhang Gaoli, 75, a former vice premier of China, of sexually assaulting her at his home three years ago. The IOC President Thomas Bach held a video call with Peng, which was unconvincing to experts. The many reported incidents of abuse and harassment by coaches in the National Women's Soccer League is also discussed. They conclude with why women's sports needs men as allies to oust offenders and why leadership in sport needs women to move the needle.Host: Dr. Nicole LaVoiRecorded: November 22, 2021For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Slovakian Petra Vlhova dominated the Slalom races in Levi, Finland last weekend winning all four races ahead of American Mikaela Shiffrin. Washington Spirit won the NWSL Championship beating the Chicago Red Stars 2-1, and more accusations of abuse by coaches cloud the NWSL as the season concludes. Emilie Bydwell has been selected as Head Coach of the USA Women's Sevens National Team. Women's Paracanoe VL3 will make its debut in Paris. Kirstin offers another perspective on how the GI tract can work for you, or against you. We first get to hear how training is going for her with two weeks to go to Half Ironman Indian Wells. Kirstin tells us about a very cold swim in preparation for the cold water on race day - sometimes it's just doing what it takes, although arguably 51 degrees is pushing those limits a bit far! Kirstin then takes us back to her summer of races and finally opens up and discusses the health issues she experienced after she suffered from heat stress during races. It caused a wreck of inflammation and she wasn't sure she'd even be able to race Indian Wells in December. But she applied the plan she set herself up and carefully eased back into training. The question is now—is she feeling prepared for race day‽ Host: Dr. KIrstin LauritzenRecorded: November 22, 2021For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Be honest with yourself, are you a runner who could probably benefit from doing some strength and conditioning? Do you struggle to stay motivated to do it? Are you recurrently injured? Perhaps you don't really know what to actually do or where to even start? In this episode, Dr. Juliet McGrattan is joined by fitness instructor and Health Coach Chantel Oakley. With huge experience as a trainer, including working with Nike, Chantel walks us through why strength work is so important for runners. She explains what benefits we'll get, how quickly we'll notice them and how to do exercises with good form. Starting with simple body weight exercises and progressing to resistance bands and one set of dumbbells, we'll discover how it's actually quite simple for us all to add some strength work into our week. More than that, Chantel helps us to reconsider our motivations for training. How to move from a life of ‘should do's' and shame to one of ‘can do's' and hope. A mind set switch can prove very powerful when it comes to creating and sticking with new habits. You'll be heading straight for your fitness kit by the end.Host: Dr. Juliet McGrattan.Recorded: November 17, 2021For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Basketball fans will immediately recognize the skills of Team GB Olympian Temi Fagbenle, and those who have yet to know her will soon discover that she is a multi-faceted and multi-talented woman. Her relentless drive to win on the court is only matched by her ambitions on the cat walk, in the board room and on a set. It soon becomes apparent that she is not content with just her sporting achievements. Her other passions also fuel her drive, which aligns with her desire to inspire young girls and women, to encourage them to create their own pathway to realize their own dreams. Temi's story is by no measure ordinary—that's not her style—she has always been a high achiever from NBA to Olympian, USC to Harvard. One of 12 children born to Nigerian parents in Baltimore, Maryland, Temi was raised to believe in herself, to be a confident woman. She was always told she was beautiful and she exudes that inner strength which she hopes will encourage girls and women to feel body positive. She is, in short, a role model for all girls and women in sport, and in life, an example of how women can orchestrate their own inspirational journey… and it's easy to be inspired by Temi. With the Paris 2024 Olympic Games her main focus, Temi is determined to complete some unfinished business. Team GB missed out on qualifying for the Rio and Tokyo Games, which is still an open wound. And while Olympic qualifications have just begun, she is also jetting back and forth to play for her league team at Çukurova Basketbol in Turkey. All this while running a fledgling business, along with her other off-court pursuits as a model, actress and UN women partner. This week Kirstin discusses the benefits of setting intentions for a training season, for your week, even for each individual workout. She has been experimenting with this for this training season setting up for Ironman 70.3 Indian Wells coming up on December 5th, and her biggest takeaway is that it helps with overall mindset. Nobody goes looking for "mindset improvements", but the benefits of working on your "mindset" show up in your performance. She has already started to see the benefits in her performance, especially with swimming. Kirstin explains what her intentions have been and how they've helped when motivation is severely lacking.Host: Dr. Kirstin Lauritzen.Recorded: November 15, 2021For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. This week it's the ‘hot' topic of inflammation which all athletes deal with eventually. Kirstin addresses the second part of the training block where inflammation builds up in the body, we get those adaptations to exercise, and then... it stops. We plateau. This is often where athletes increase their training and try even harder but they run the risk of running themselves into overtraining versus running themselves back into performance improvements. We also cover in further detail which markers are signs of increased inflammation and what you can do to improve chronic inflammation levels, if you know this is something you've been dealing with for a while. Dr. Juliet McGrattan kicks off a second season of the Active Health podcast with a motivating and inspiring chat about marathon running. She is joined by sports journalist and co-host of the WiSP Sports Desk, Nancy Gillen who was steered into running as a way to stay fit during the Pandemic lockdown in the UK. Nancy admits she had previously hated running and never thought she would ever be capable of taking on a marathon. Fast forward a few months and she impulsively entered herself in the 2021 London Marathon ballot. Rather than freaking out when she got a spot, she decided to embrace the opportunity. She set about researching marathon plans, training in earnest and just taking things week by week at her own pace. Nancy tells Juliet how she made the whole journey entirely on her own with no coach or running buddies. And how she overcame a previous knee injury, kept herself occupied on long runs and slowly discovered how powerful her body and mind truly are. This really is a masterclass in how to run your first marathon. If you're thinking you might like to rise to the marathon challenge, don't miss this. Full of tips and advice, motivation and inspiration, this personal story of how to aim high will have you signing up for a marathon and heading to the start line with confidence. This week, Kirstin answers a listener's question about pain during workouts. This was a follow up question to the episode from last week where Dr Nicole Woodard discussed stopping workouts especially when you have pain. But when is pain due to under-fueling versus an actual problem that could lead to an injury? Kirstin breaks that question down and includes some common symptoms or situations that you can ask yourself the next time you experience pain during a workout.Host: Dr. Kirstin LauritzenFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Helena Scutt began racing dinghies competitively relatively late after a soccer-obsessed childhood. Sailing had always been a part of her life, having grown up on Lake Washington near Seattle, she excelled in the 29er class and was selected for the U.S. Sailing Development Team, progressing through to the 49fx and Nacra 17. Helena took up Moth sailing in 2018 to complement her training in the Nacra class. In this episode, Helena shares her experiences of getting into this particular dinghy, racing at the Moth Worlds in Lake Garda, and her vision as the recently appointed Vice President of the Moth Class.Host: Abby Ehler, The Magenta ProjectFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. The hurricane that swept through the NWSL last week was long overdue and the reverberations will be heard for a long time. The significance of what has happened in gymnastics in the US and now in football has grasped the news headlines beyond the sports pages and that is our top story this week. We also have news from tennis, cycling, sailing and handball. But we begin with Nancy's amazing achievement in completing the London Marathon as she tells Dr. Juliet McGrattan who has completed the race twice. Nancy shares the highlights of her race and Juliet will be digging deeper in the training and preparation on the season premier of Season 2 of Active Health, which she hosts, when it returns this month.Host: Chris Stafford & Nancy Gillen For more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. This week Kirstin's guest is Dr. Nicole Woodard from Mobility Athletes. This year, Nicole participated in 29029, which is an endurance event that involves summiting a mountain as many times as it takes to complete 29,029 ft in elevation in 3 days. Also, we discuss the difference between mobility, flexibility and stability in relation to movement and injuries. It's common for athletes to think that stretching is the solution to many problems, but there's often a lot more to it. Nicole walks us through what is going on when you have a tight muscle or notice a pain start up when you're out on your run and gives a few tips on what to try or look for when the body inevitably starts ‘talking' to you. Lots of great advice here on day to day issues that we take for granted, mistreat or just fail to respond to in the best way for our body.Host: Dr. Kirstin LauritzenFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women's sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
