The boys are back fresh off the bye last week and ready to talk some ball. Before jumping into the Ravens, there have been some big pieces of news in the baseball world that we have to address. Juan Soto signed the biggest deal in MLB history this week, leaving the Yankees to sign with the New York Mets. Josh and Dante take a look at why this is significant both for the league, and for the Yankees as an organization. Also, the Orioles have made some moves! Tyler O'Neill and Gary Sanchez have both agreed to deals with the Orioles, so the boys break down how they feel about both moves, as well as what needs to be next for the O's. Moving over to football, the Ravens are coming out of a bye week that wasn't without drama as we finally know what happened with Diontae Johnson. The boys look at his 1-week suspension and try to make sense of it all. The Ravens are traveling up to New Jersey this week for a matchup with the New York Giants with an opportunity to kick start the home stretch of the regular season. The Giants have had a less than stellar season, but Dante explains why this game will not be a cake walk. John Harbaugh has a real chance to get some confidence back into his team this week, and make a late push for a division title. The boys look at the numbers on the season for the Giants and try to explain why their defensive numbers may be a bit skewed. Josh gives his thoughts on the game and what he wants to see and Dante gives his keys to victory this week. To wrap up the sports talk, the boys are talking college football. There's an incredible Heisman race going on between Ashton Jeanty and Travis Hunter, so the boys weigh in and give their takes. Also, the first ever 12-team college football playoff bracket is set, so we break it all down on the show. Lastly, Dante gives an update on his music life. Will, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me, Steve. Huge fan of the Management Blueprint Podcast, been listening for a long time, so I'm humbled to actually be a guest on it. So thank you for that. That's great. So you know our flow and it's going to be familiar to you and you can anticipate my questions. So I won't be able to catch you off guard here, but that's probably not that important anyway. So let's start with your entrepreneurial journey. So what road led you to starting Vesta Foundation Solutions in the first place? So I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, not too far from you, Steve. But my father was a general contractor. And of course, like most sons or daughters of general contractors, I was told continuously to not join the family business, go to college, right? And the Achilles heel there was, number one, I wasn't a very good student. So I didn't do very well in high school or my introductory course to college, which was a good lesson in how to spend tuition money and get little in return. But when I was 20 years old, my wife and I, well, then girlfriend, now wife, had the unexpected surprise of, hey, you're going to have a kid. And being a 20-year-old and being hit upside the head with that level of responsibility really kind of steered me back into saying, well, I've got a family I have to be responsible for and I've got other people that rely on me. And so I did what was natural to me. I jumped back into construction, doing what I knew and what I was raised to do. So I had a business. And of course, imagine, Steve, a 20-year-old running a business, right? Obviously I aced it. Obviously not. But I grew that business for about a year and a half and then eventually merged that company with a gentleman, an acquaintance of mine that didn't really have a succession plan. And we were doing about $300,000 a year. And this was my introduction into quote, unquote foundation repair. Because Steve, obviously your listeners can understand, everybody just wakes up in the morning and says, man, I can't wait to be a foundation repair contractor. Right. It's just not a sexy business. But we grew that business from about 300,000 to $9 million a year in revenue over the course of many years. And that was my first lesson in true leadership and humility, because to be frank, I was a 27 year old running a $9 million business, and I really was not a good leader. I didn't understand how to run a business, even though I thought I did. And ultimately what happened there was we dissolved that partnership. And at the time, of course, imagine being a 27-year-old, losing your first company. You think, oh, man, the world is over, right? I wish I could go back and be like, you are a dummy. You're 27. You've got plenty of life left, right? But through that, obviously, I was very humbled. And my wife and I would go around and help other contractors set up systems and processes in place. And then about a year later, a good friend of ours that owned a large foundation repair company in Virginia heard we were on the market and said, hey, listen, I want you to come up and work for me. And mind you, they were already doing about $30 million in revenue a year, fixing about 120 homes a week. And I went there as an operations manager under the VP. And he was an outstanding leader. He was a good human being, but he was also very, very smart,

Wicked problems have been a huge part of our lives! Most of us know that the housing market has been a little crazy for the past few years. Some of that has been due to wicked problems like labor shortages, supply chain issues, and even land shortages in many parts of the country.   The labor shortage has been of interest to many people, me and my guest co-host for today included. So, we decided to do something about it!  I'm Marla, the Green Home Coach! Today I am joined by Will Blake, of Vesta Foundation Solutions in Oklahoma City. Will and I have worked together on several projects.  Today, we are talking about workforce development, particularly in the building industry and skilled trades.  Plumbers Lately, it could take weeks or even months to get a plumber to come out unless it's an emergency, and you are willing to pay double.  A cascading labor shortage The labor shortage in the new build and remodeling industry is cascading! That's because there aren't enough people in the trades, especially the licensed trades.  Licensed trades  We are greying out in the licensed trades. That means that those who have been trained to become the backbone of the industry are retiring. So, why are there no people behind them as they choose to move on with their lives? A shrinking workforce Will's construction company specializes in an unlicenced trade, and even so, they are still experiencing issues with supplies, rising costs, and a shrinking workforce.  Three categories Most people we converse with fit into one of three categories: Nobody wants to work in this category. (This is the largest category.) People in this category are trying to identify generational workplace inequalities or issues with safety, diversity, and inclusion.  People in this category want to know what we are going to do about the situation. (This is the smallest category. Will and I fit in here.) 2025 Almost 20% of our workforce will be aging out by 2025. Many of them will be taking all their knowledge, wisdom, hard skills, operational knowledge, and understanding of vendor relationships with them. Nearly 12% will come in to replace them, but that will be spread across all industries. Additional issues We did not get the population increase we were hoping for after Covid. Closing the borders and slowing down the movement of migrant workers into the country has also added to the problem of not being able to build enough houses. Technology Technology can provide some innovative new housing solutions, but there are still many missing pieces, and technology will not solve the hands-on labor problem. A difficult business Construction is a difficult business. 50% of businesses go out of business in the first five years. But in construction, it happens with 75% of businesses. Purpose Will's company does foundation repair, concrete lifting, wood floor system repair, crawl spaces, and drainage. As a company, they tie its purpose back to the concept of the broken window theory, which is all about caring for infrastructure. So even if their efforts do not directly help the company, they are meant to indirectly support the industry and fix the problem with staffing, supply chain issues, etc. No one to do repairs If no people are available to do the necessary repairs to our homes and businesses, it means that either they won't get done, or the homeowner will have to DIY them. What is the problem? The message for getting people into the construction trade has either been lost or skewed dramatically. Schoolchildren are encouraged to go to college rather than explore careers in the trades even though many people in the trades are earning a lot more than their college counterparts. Build My Future Build My Future OKC is an event put on by the Central OKlahoma Association of Home Builders and it's Professional Women in Building Council. It is a one-day hands-on interactive construction career fair. When I moved back to Oklahoma City from St. Louis, and we got Professional Women in Building going again after being dormant, I told the other members about Build My Future and suggested we make it our signature project. They all agreed. Currently, there are between 25 and 30 Build My Futures taking place across the country to help young people learn about careers in the skilled trades and building industry. Build My Future Build My Future is an event put on by the National Association of Homebuilders. The events are one-day hands-on interactive construction career fairs. Currently, there are between 25 and 30 Build My Futures taking place across the country to help young people learn about careers in the skilled trades and building industry.  Interesting career opportunities There are some exciting and fulfilling career opportunities within the skilled trades, from marketing to sales to administrative to the production side to manufacturing, that provide a great living above the national average without any student debt loans. Go younger One thing that has come up is that we need to go younger because high school students pick a track to follow in the eighth grade. A week-long camp A group of like-minded construction business owners suggested doing a week-long free camp, Construct My Future, to allow kids to learn about various things they can do in the trades. Although they had good intentions and good support initially, things only worked out when they started focusing on seventh and eighth graders rather than high school students. The seventh and eighth graders were very engaged, and their parents also got involved.  Great possibilities A big part of our mission with the Build My Future and Construct My Future programs is to help more people- especially teachers and parents, understand the great possibilities in the skilled trades industry.
