The first fifteen verses of Exodus 22 deal with restitution of property. The theft of a sheep, when discovered had to be repaid fourfold: cp David's repaying for his theft of a ewe lamb in losing four of his sons 2 Samuel 12 verses 1-6. There were different rates for other animals. Verses 5-6 cover damage to grain through negligence - non controlling of a beast, or fire. Verses 7-13 deals  with property entrusted to another; and outlines the discussion around resolution of an arising disagreement. In verses 14-15 deals with hiring arrangements. Verses 16-31 centre around being holy people in their dealings with their neighbours. All dealings are underlined by the need to be just, fair and kind. All of these laws centre around protecting the weakest members of society and ensuring care is provided for them. The laws also provide advice for dealing with those powerful members of the community who would often exploit those people who are downcast. Psalms 75 and 76 are both from the pen of Asaph. There is a cluster of psalms here in the Sanctuary psalms of Book 3. They are all addressed to the Choirmaster. Psalm 75 is a prayer that God will rise up to judge the world in equity and righteousness. It begins with thanksgiving to the Almighty for His past faithfulness. Next the psalmist declares that he knows that God has appointed a set time for judgment: Psalm 102 verses 13-22; Acts 17 verses 30-31; 2 Timothy 4 verses 1-2. In this we too can rejoice. The Almighty would bring judgment from neither the east, nor the west; it always came from the north. God is the Judge, a kindred word to Dan; which tribe's inheritance was in the north. The cup in the Omnipotent Creator's hand contains the wine of retribution, which will be poured upon the guilty from all nations - those drunken with their own sense of self importance; and they drain that cup to the very bottom. Then will the faithful righteous be joyful in their Mighty One and exultant in Him. Psalm 76 tells the hearer that then Judah will be exalted and honoured Zechariah 8:20-23. Verses 2-4 describe the glorious abode of the LORD in Zion - the elevated world capital: Psalm 48 Isaiah 2 verses 1-5, Jeremiah 3 verses16-17; Matthew 5 verses 34-35. Once God has risen for judgment who can stand against Him and that His purpose cannot be frustrated by mere mortals. Those who remain no matter how important they were prior to His great work will be humbled by the Almighty when He has executed His judgement and all the earth will praise and worship the Almighty God of Israel. Mark's 8th chapter commences with the feeding of 4,000. The record contains some contrasts with that of the 5,000 - 1) the 5,000 were Jewish, the 4,000 were not; 2) the Apostles had immediate compassion for the 5,000, but no compassion for the others despite watching the multitude enduring for 3 days without any food; 3) the numbers of bread and fishes involved differed and taught different messages out of the feedings. This is followed by the rulers asking, but not receiving another sign. A discussion between our Lord and his enemies ensued about leaven. The disciples assume that Jesus was rebuking them for forgetting to take food. How illogical this was for he had shown his power to make food. It was about the corrupt influence of wrongful teaching. The chapter continues with the healing of a blind man. This man was cured by stages and took place at Bethsaida, illustrating the problem of perception - we so often, like that man see people out of proportion. Jesus next questions his Apostles on other people's perception of himself. Then our Lord asks them who they thought him to be. Several answers were given until Peter responded by declaring that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the Living God. All of the Apostles are charged to not reveal this until after our Lord Jesus Christ has been raised from the dead. Once again our Master speaks of his despicable treatment, crucifixion and resurrection the 3rd day. The chapter finishes with an appeal for each of us to take up our stake daily to follow our Lord Jesus.

#220: Creating an Organ Repertoire for All Levels (with Joel Kumro)

Today's episode explores the world of pipe organ repertoire. I so often hear discussions of high-level performance pieces fit for excellent organ concerts, but so often we may not take the time to discuss an organ repertoire that's manageable and attainable for all levels of skill, and on a pastoral musician's available time frame for learning. Organists who may have started as pianists and are learning how to play organ, or maybe organists who are, quite frankly, overcommitted to other tasks, can find beautiful, accessible organ music that supports the Mass each week. That is the starting point from which I begin my conversation today. Today I speak with Joel Kumro, the Choirmaster and Organist at Saint Benedict Catholic Church in Richmond, VA. Joel is also director of his parish's concert series and is the instructor of Liturgical Music at Saint Benedict Catholic School. Joel, originally a trained classical singer, shares how he developed a regularly-rotating repertoire of organ music as he learned “the king of instruments” and how he's come to use it well today.

Psalm 31:1-8 - "Into Your Hand I Commit..."

Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth." From the title we immediately learn that this is a “Psalm of David” that he wrote to give to the “Choirmaster” or the “Chief Musician” to be sung by the Levitical choirs during worship. The emphasis is on trusting ("taking refuge") in the Lord, no matter how difficult the circumstances might be (vv. 1, 6, 14, 19). David was surrounded by subversive whispering campaigns and wicked conspiracies (vv. 8, 13, 15, 18, 20), and everything seemed against him. Even his best friends and neighbors didn't want to be seen with him (vv. 11-13), and there was "fear on every side" (v. 13). The reference to "a besieged city" in verse 21 has led some students to connect this volatile situation with David's experience at Keilah (1 Sam. 23:1-15) or perhaps at Ziklag (1 Sam. 30). However, it appears that what is described in the psalm best fits what happened during the rebellion led by Absalom (2 Sam. 15-18). Over many months, Absalom led a subversive campaign against his father, and even Ahithophel, David's wisest counselor, deserted the king and followed Absalom. "They took counsel together against me" (v. 13) reminds us of the conference recorded in 2 Samuel 17. There can be no doubt that this Psalm is very special in that it is quoted by Jonah, by Jeremiah, and by Jesus. The first three verses are quoted in 71:1-3, an untitled psalm probably written by David. He affirms his trust in the Lord and asks Him to deliver him and defend him on the basis of divine righteousness. "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" (Gen. 18:25). How can the righteous Lord permit wicked people to prosper and overthrow His anointed king? Such a thing would make David ashamed, a statement he repeats in verse 17. As David often did, he begged God to act speedily (69:17; 70:1, 5; 71:12; 141:1; 143:7) and be to him a rock and a fortress (see 18:1-3). Along with God's protection, David needed God's direction so he would avoid the traps the enemy had set for him. "You are my strength" was his affirmation of faith (v. 4), for his own strength had failed (v. 10). David's prayer of commitment in verse 5 was quoted by our Lord from the cross (Luke 23:46). The word "commit," means "to deposit in trust, as money in a bank." The hand of the enemy was against David (vv. 8, 15), but he knew he was safe in God's hand (see John 10:27-30). The God of truth would keep His promises. His enemies were idolaters; they weren't trusting in the living God but in "lying vanities, worthless idols." Note the repeated "but I trust" (vv. 6, 14). The word trust means to depend on, to lean on. Jonah quoted verse 6 in his prayer from the great fish (Jonah 2:8). In His mercy, God had delivered David from many dangerous places, and David knew he could depend on Him again, and this brought him joy. As in the past, God would deliver him from a "tight place" and enable him to stand in a "wide or spacious place" (v. 8). He would grow because of his trials and his faith in the Lord. I will finish our devotion today with a quote from John Phillips: “We creep up Calvary's hill just as the sufferings of Jesus are about to end. For six long hours the Holy One has suffered beyond our ability to comprehend. For the past three hours He has been the sin offering, alone with God and our sins in the darkness. Now it's all over. He is about to utter His very last words and he turns to this Psalm: "Father, into Thine hand I commit My spirit."That quotation alone embalms this Psalm with fragrance and significance. Today, will you commit yourself into the Father's hand! God bless!

For 10 years I was the choirmaster of my local choir, Vestbygda Blandakor. And as such, I had the pleasurable duty of preparing the annual Advent Concert. I had to ensure that when the lights in Onsøy Church were turned down and the audience relaxed in their pews, lit only by the hundred flickering flames of the candelabra, then they would snuggle closer together, feel the warmth of community again. And most of all, the emotional pull of Christmas music. I love those Advent and Christmas songs that are intended to resound in a building devoted to the continuity of generations. Those old songs put you in contact with humans as they have been at midwinter: struggling with daunting temperatures, with the need for fuel and sustenance – but coping thanks to the bonds of community and family.CONTACTTwitter: (a)northbynorwayEmail: northbynorway(a)gmail(.)comwebpage: andrewjboyle(.)com Hosted on Acast. He was a cantor at the Great Lavra on Mt Athos. Once, on the eve of Theophany, he was inspired to sing the hymn O full of grace, thou who art the joy of all creation instead of the usual It is truly meet to bless thee during the Divine Liturgy. When he did this, the most holy Theotokos appeared to him, thanked him and gave him a gold coin as a sign of her favor. The coin is still kept at the Lavra. He reposed in peace. St Gregory's hymn has been sung since that time as part of the Divine Liturgy of St Basil.

REFLECTION QUOTES “Anxious cares are heavy burdens with which good people often load themselves more than they need.” ~Matthew Henry's commentary on Psalm 13 “A full 70% of the time our subjects opted to receive more-painful shocks right away rather than wait for less painful shocks in the near future. We infer from this that dread—the anticipation of negative outcomes—is a powerful force… And we think these findings show that dread is so painful that people will pay a significant price, in the form of more physical pain, to avoid it.” ~Giles Story, clinical researcher in behavioral economics at University College, London and Imperial College London (from Harvard Business Review, March 2014) “It is impossible to suffer without making someone pay for it; every complaint already contains revenge.” ~Friedrich Nietzsche, 19th-century German philosopher “The waiting is the hardest part Every day you see one more card You take it on faith, you take it to the heart The waiting is the hardest part.” ~“The Waiting” by Tom Petty “I will stay, should the world by me fold, Lift up your name as the darkness falls. I will wait, and hold fast to your word, Heart on your heart, with my eyes on yours.” ~“Stay and Wait”by Joel Houston (Hillsong) SERMON PASSAGE Psalm 13 (ESV) How Long, O Lord? To the Choirmaster, A Psalm of David. 1 How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? 3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, 4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken. 5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. 6 I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.
