For the love of Horn, a conversation with Art DeCamp

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2022 76:19

Today we're talking with Contemporary Master Horner Art DeCamp. Art's work has been an inspiration to me and my historic research for several years. His books are second to none in their accurate documentation and assessment of original horns and I'm excited to be sharing his story with you today. While Art is considered one of the best craftsmen of the contemporary age, he had humbled beginnings as a young boy in Indiana. His father was a firearms appreciator and Art followed suit, continuing a family appreciation of historic arms. The DeCamp family home was near Fort Ouiatenon in Lafayette, Indiana, home of the "Feast of the Hunters Moon", a massive long running living history event. As Art puts it, "It was hard for me to get away from history." In second grade, Art brought a filled powder horn to his 2nd Grade show and tell the program, even at that young age he couldn't help but share his appreciation for historic works of art. As a young man Art dove deeper into muzzleloading culture by building an off-the-shelf muzzleloader kit. The experience got him started but Art was looking for more, the kit wasn't shaped right, the components weren't beautiful, and things weren't adding up. With the help of several dedicated family friends, Art took to building his own muzzleloaders "from the blank" with sets of parts, diagrams, and illustrations of original pieces as his reference. For years Art would balance his job, his family, and his appreciation for historic crafts. "As a parent, I worked a lot in the evenings after the kids went to bed", Art says, "I thought it would change once they were grown but I still find myself working into the night!". Art is a very jovial guy, even as we reminisce about his time on the road driving a couple of thousand miles round trip to see some original pieces at the KRA shows he laughs, "I don't know how you explain driving 2300 miles round trip to go look at some old guns." As a young man with a young family, I appreciate Art's openness and honesty about including his family in his passion, "A time comes when you have to put your kids first and that's important". If you find yourself in a similar situation, you'll enjoy the insights and commentary Art has on not only being an artist but a father and husband as well. Like many others, our conversation ebbed and flowed as the evening progressed. From Art's history to his thoughts on the contemporary community, we covered a broad range of topics, but towards the end, we settled on one topic I think is important to hear discussed from an artist of Art's caliber- Getting started and getting better. Art's advice for someone looking to make traditional accoutrements echos a positive montra I love hearing from contemporary masters, "Don't be bashful, reach out and ask for help." Art DeCamp has been building muzzle loading rifles and powder horns since 1980, and specializes in replicating the Kentucky rifles, and shop-made screw-tip horns of Pennsylvania. His horn making is concentrated on the lathe-turned, screw-tip type horns from the various “schools” of eastern Pennsylvania, and accurate replication of Tansel style engraved horn work from central Indiana. Much of his horn working time is spent performing historically accurate museum quality restoration work on original powder horns.Follow Art's work on his website http://www.artspowderhorns.com/The last of Art's Books can be found here: https://www.crazycrow.com/powderhorns-and-accouterments-books/pennsylvania-horns-of-the-trade/ Hosted on Acast. Simeon displays his work at this show and talked me into handling several of the ahwks he had on display. Instantly I recognized a difference in how it handled compared to my ‘throwing' tomahawk. This sparked a nearly hour long discussion about the form and function of original tomahawks. While chatting we talk about several events that no longer exist, whether affected by the economy or a dissolving patron base, we're seeing a number of events go away, and with them, staples of local history. You could say this concern over the future of not only the Five Medals event but the livelihood of Mike's friends who depend on these events to support their families has spurred another change in Mike's living history journey. In recent years Mike has begun to think about the future and how he can support an incoming generation of enthusiasts so that someday he may pass the reins and see them carried forward. I wanted to talk to Mike because I've seen that very desire, the desire to see this continue in my interactions with him. I've known Mike since I was a boy and he's been a great friend to me in my own living history journey. He's provided resources and keywords I use in my own research and I can't thank him enough. This interview is about Mike's story, but it became more than that, I think. It became the story of a man's passion through time, changing like the seasons. Hey everyone, this is a "feed drop" of sorts to share that I was a guest on the T Rex Talk podcast from T Rex Arms. T Rex Arms is an American company that started just a few years ago, but they have grown a ton and have a strong mission to not only make and sell practical, useable products, but they also want to educate and train Americans with practical skills and history.  You can listen to the full conversation at this link HERE , look for "Flintlocks & Old-school Skills w/ Ethan Yazel" Isaac and I talk alot more about a wide variety of topics related to muzzleloading, I hope it's a fun listen for anyone interested in muzzleloading or firearms in general. Thanks to a good friend, Jordan Goodwin, my name came up when T Rex Arms needed some historic arms for their video "Why everyone needs an AR 15". I was able to advise a bit on the history of firearms in the United States and got to visit the T Rex Facility during the production of the video.  Watch the video HERE. The video, while focusing on modern firearms ownership and our right to do so, discusses the importance of civilian firearms ownership since the beginning of the United States. Isaac Botkin was kind enough to give my wife, baby and me a tour of the facility and was a gracious host during our time in Tennessee.   I can't thank Isaac and the rest of the T Rex Arms team enough for the opportunity to help out on the video and be a guest on their podcast. It's not often that muzzleloaders and modern firearms come together, but it's always fun when they do.

Selling items based on designs 200 years old doesn't mean they are shackled to old business practices. Casey and Abby got knee deep in digital marketing, figuring out how to cash in on the e-commerce boom of 2020. They also took a big bet with their catalog. The Samson Historical Catalog releases yearly at the Kalamazoo Living History Show, but after it's cancellation in 2020, the Samsons were left with a pallet of catalogs and no way to get them out to customers. Thinking quickly, Casey and Abby began digitally collecting addresses and mailing as many catalogs as they could. ”I remember thinking, this could literally be the last nail in our coffin”, Casey said as he remembered looking at the first shipment of catalogs going out on a USPS truck. Thankfully the bet paid off and shortly after mailing the orders began flowing in. The most popular products? Tomahawks and fire starting kits. “It seemed liked everyone needed a tomahawk and a flint and steel to get through the lockdowns” Samson shared. I personally really enjoyed catching up with Casey and hearing about the progress they've made as a team at Samson Historical. Small businesses are the backbone of America and hearing a positive story like this makes me hopeful for the future of the community and the businesses it depends on. Washington State Keeps Traditional Muzzleloading Sight Rules, votes to not allow Scopes

Last week, the Washington Fish and Wildlife commissioners rejected proposals that would have allowed slight modernization to the muzzleloading rules. Currently in Washington State, sights must be open, peep and can include fiber optic inserts. Using any sort of sight with telescopic abilities or any type of glass is against the law. It is also against the law to have any kind of electronic device attached to your muzzleloader, like a camera. The proposed rule changes focused on the following: 1. Allowing the use of 1x or red dot scopes on muzzleloading firearms. 2. Allowing video-cameras to be mounted to muzzleloading firearms. 3. Clarifying that the term “load” refers to the powder charge and projectile and that both must be loaded from the muzzle. (Possibly to restrict the use of the “Federal Fire Stick” during Washington's Muzzleloading season, though it looks to be allowed in the rifle season) Public comments were submitted and boiled down to the following: Common themes: • General support for rule changes• General disagreement about rule changes• Desire to maintain primitive weapon types• Concern about increased hunter participation in muzzleloader seasons• Concern over availability of 1x scopes• Support for rule change due to improved shot placement• Support for 1x scopes on muzzleloading firearms because it enables hunter participation (e.g., poor eyesight may restrict participation with this weapon type) • Concern over ethical shot placement – perception that scopes may enable long- distance shooting GMAC input: 92 (11/12)% agree with proposed changes Concern over scope availability Support for allowing 1x scope due to improved participation  Read the full presentation here On April 7, the commission was split on modifications to the rules that would have allowed muzzleloaders to attach 1-power or red dot scopes to their guns or attach video cameras to their guns. Similar modifications were proposed for archery rules as well. The commission ultimately rejected the muzzleloader scopes, range-finding bow sites and video camera proposals. Source

This week we're talking with Katie Petry about her recent muzzleloading black bear hunt in New Mexico. I'm really excited to have Katie on the show today to talk about her family history with muzzleloading and how that led to her recent muzzling black bear hunt. Hearing this inspiring story about Katie taking down this black bear with her grandfather's Thompson Center Cherokee is pretty energizing.  "My name is Katie Petry and I'm just a mom from Indiana. I got into muzzleloading through my grandfather when I was a young kid I loved to follow him around, and I begged him to. Let me go hunting with him, so he was my inspiration into all things outdoors. I recently was very very blessed and able to honor his memory by taking my first black beer with a traditional cap and ball muzzleloader that he gave me about fifteen years ago. He passed away two years ago and since then I've been hunting almost exclusively with that muzzleloader. So this was a very special hunt for me as a kid I just a scrawny little kid and I saw my grandpa taking my two older boy: cousins, hunting and I begged him, take me- and he said you know "Oh you're too little you'll get cold, you won't like it", and so finally he was like all right. "You know I'm going to have you shoot my four ten and you're not going to like it. It'll kick and you won't like it, but I'm gonna, let you do it anyway because you keep asking me", and so he let me shoot it and I shot all the cans down that he'd set up for me and he got just an absolute kick out of that yeah. I know I'll, never forget him just laughing and bragging on me and I was very, very young. I can't remember how old I was, but I was so proud of myself and just that whole experience that grandpa was so proud and that I loved it was kind of like the first thing that just got me just passionate about it. I wasn't the only grandkid I wasn't the only girl, but we had a very special bond over anything to do with the outdoors." Katie is an advocate for hunters everywhere using any legal method of take. As a woman in the outdoors, she's overcome some adversity to prove she can hunt just like everyone else, even with her grandfather's old muzzleloader.  I'm looking forward to following Katie's adventures as she plans for her next hunt.  Follow Katie on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/katie_rvt/  Join the NMLRA today to learn more about muzzleloading - NMLRA.org

Today we're talking with Aaron Oelger, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Hodgdon Powder Company about the announcement that Hodgdon will be closing and selling GOEX Blackpowder. Aaron is a 17 year veteran of the outdoor and shooting sports industry and has been with Hodgdon Powder Company for many years. I'd like to thank him for coming on the show and answering some of the questions muzzleloading enthusiasts have about this decision. Mr. Oelger is optimistic about the future of GOEX and has repeatedly stated that GOEX will only sell the brand to someone who can be a true steward of the product moving forward. As a GOEX user himself, Aaron has a passion for all forms of muzzleloading and shares the company's passion for seeing it continue. In case you haven't heard the news: In a press release posted Monday, September 27, 2021 Hodgdon announced they are stopping production of GOEX Blackpowder immediately. Hodgdon has stated that this decision is final, but they are looking to pass the brand into good hands so it can continue and muzzleloading enthusiasts can continue enjoying American-made Blackpowder for generations to come. As of reporting, Hogdon is in talks with several entities about the GOEX brand, they consider this a part of the "open discovery" period common with business buying and selling. If we want to save GOEX Powder, and possibly the sport in the US, we must be kind in our comments and writing. Each comment should highlight the importance of US made black powder to muzzleloading enthusiasts, both for black powder sports, and the preservation of US History. On September 28 we launched the "Save GOEX" campaign to unite enthusiasts in support of the brand, hopefully showing potential buyers how many people this brand impacts. You can learn more about this here About Hodgdon Powder Company, Inc. Today we're talking with Eric van Alstine, a traditional leather worker from the state of Missouri working to recreate the golden age of leatherworking with his contemporary works. Eric really focuses on using historical tools and oftentimes original tools from the eighteen and up to the nineteen hundreds. Eric has a lot to say about the history of leatherworking and where he gets his inspiration from. He is a real student of history when it comes to all of this, and he offers some really interesting perspectives about where he studies where he gets his resources, where he finds originals to be inspired by to make clients and customers bags. "My only, what I call my modern tools is scissors and harness needles and pretty much everything else is old, antique tools from the Golden Age of leather work and leatherworkthat golden age when happened, were started in about 1826 and then you know it kind of you know went on up until the early nineteen hundreds, and so all my tools come from that time frame and I do have one piece- it goes back to about the late 1700s, I don't use it- it just sits on the shelf. I'm a student of history, American history and I derive a lot of stuff from there and I see a lot of guys that sit there and say: Oh, this is the way it was. This is the way it was you know, but they miss out on the harness makers and the saddle makers and how beautiful their work really was. And so I try to take what those harness makers did in the back, what I call the mountain regions and everything- and you know recreate what they would have made: with the tools that they had, and so that's what makes mine look a little different than most. You can go out west and sit down with some of these old saddle makers and they just make beautiful works of art, and you know, 1700s hand-stitched saddles, they had to have somebody make them, and you know it's a lost and dying art of what was. I try to keep that alive by picking up old, antique leatherworking tools. I employ all those in my work and at the end of the day it looks a little bit different than most, and that's why I like to do. Chasing the Mile with Nick Parcher and Smokeless Muzzleloaders

Learn more at ilovemuzzleloading.com Safety: Never put smokeless powder into a muzzleloader that is not rated for it. The muzzleloaders Nick is using and referencing are custom built to meet the demands of Smokeles Powder. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and safety protocol for your muzzleloader. For Nick Parcher, muzzleloading looks a bit different than many of us are used to. Nick is focused on two things, precision, and hunting. In the late 1990s, Savage arms released the first "mass produced" smokeless muzzleloader, the "ML" and later the "ML2". The fallout from these rifles reached far and wide, they lead to a series of injuries and muddied the water on muzzleloaders and how to use them. But from the ashes of the Savage ML came a new breed of precision muzzleloading, one that would leave the roundball , sabot, and blackpowder behind. Nick is an avid smokeless muzzleloader enthusiast and has been since the launch of the Savage ML. "Savage didn't really know what they were doing, in starting a whole new breed of muzzleloader", Nick says, and he was right. While the ML and ML2 are relegated to aftermarket parts for their shooters in 2021, Nick is part of a community doing what Savage couldn't, pushing muzzleloading to the limit while being as safe as possible. Hunting for Nick has changed a lot over the years, when he was younger he hunted in a party with his buddies, all tracking and pushing deer through the woods/fields with shotguns. As his interested changed, and he moved towards hunting from a blind, he needed something with more accuracy and more range. Before switching to a muzzleloader, 190-200yds was as far as Nick had ever shot, now it's much further than that, about 492 yards. For 2021, Nick is hoping to take a deer at ~800 yards. When it comes to the safety of modern smokless muzzleloaders, Nick is happy about the changes in technology and mentality among shooters, he's become a go to person to run simulations on pressure calculations to make sure a load is safe before it's shot. "Now I'm not going to lie, a couple of these guys actually blow up guns or you know most barrels getting to know stuff, but it was under a more controlled scenario where they kind of saw coming right. They'd push the limit a little too far and and nobody really got hurt, but these pressure traces were all over the message boards and and people were starting to do that and then, of course, quick loads came along. Quick loads had been out for a long time, but had never really been applied to muzzle loading and that's and that's kind of where I took over I took quick loads and being an engineer and using a lot of software, I kind of worked it out and and now quick loads is actually the go to name. So whenever somebody asks me, what is as safe to shoot right. It takes me just a minute or two to plug the numbers in and find out. I can say, here's the velocity you're going to get and here's the pressure you're going to see and based on the kind of gun, whether it's a good idea or it's a bad idea! " As any muzzleloading enthusiast will tell you, hunting seasons are too short to be "enough" muzzleloading for the year. Nick continues to be hooked to this day, sending nearly 1000 rounds a year downrange. Competitive shooting became a way to practice for the hunt, and try new things. Nick now travels as much as he can to competitive matches, and continues to try to enter "Precision Rifle Matches" for modern center fire rifles with his muzzleloader to prove a muzzleloader can compete and expose more to the muzzleloading hobby. Reception has been cold though, but Nick is hopeful for the future. In recent years, Nick has participated in and now runs the "Midwest Muzzleloader Classic", a long range muzzleloading match in Iowa. All muzzleloaders are welcome, but you'll shoot the same course of fire if you have a break action or a long range bolt action inline muzzleloader, so come prepared! Course of Fire is 3 rounds at 200 yards, one at each plate 12", 6", and 4" 3 rounds at 300 yards, one at each plate 12", 6", and 4" 3 rounds at 400 yards, one at each plate 12", 6", and 4" 3 rounds at 500 yards, one at each plate 12", 6", and 4" 3 shot group at 100 yards will be the tie breaker. The prizes this year are Medford Knives donated two knives $600 each Tactile Turn Titanium bolt action pen $100 Defiance Machine 50% off an action $755 value Nightforce Optics 25 hats and loads of other swag Berger Bullets 100 bullet your choice Vihtavuori powder 1lb of powder and lots of reloading manuals Hankins Rifles Smooth Form Die Fury Bullets TBD Leupold TBD Arrowhead Rifles TBD For more information on this match, check out the flyer at ILoveMuzzleloading.com or visit the facebook event here. Nick also hosts a series of "Cold Bore Matches" that, as the title states, rely on the barrel of your rifle being cold, forcing the shooter to know their gun and how it behaves with unknown yardages. These "cold Bore" matches are open to center fire shooters, but Nick has been converting them to muzzleloaders for some time now. It's hard to sell a production gun to a custom muzzleloader shooter, Nick is well past anything offered by the "Big 3", but he respects their place in the community. If you ask Nick how to get started in muzzleloading, he's going to recommend the best of the best, something that does what he likes and it'll run nearly $4,000. "Most people can't and won't spend that kind of money on a muzzleloader, and I get that. There's a need for those $300-$500 guns out there, they bring people into the sport." I often hear people complain that inline/modern muzzleloaders only shoot muzzleloaders for 2 weeks out of the year, that they don't care about the muzzleloading community. Nick is the opposite of that. I don't know that I've met someone that shoots as much and cares as much about seeing muzzleloading of all types preserved and passed on to future generations. He cares about the sport, the people, and the businesses that make it all possible. From a young age, he was in the shop making all manner of things sharp and pointy. He went on to welding school and later became a first-class boilermaker. In the 1980s, work was slow, Frank finally had time to begin working in his own shop. After a trip to Sears Frank came home with a bandsaw and got to work. When the boiler markers called him back to work he said, "Go to hell" and has been building longrifles ever since.Read more about Frank and Lally's Work: https://www.blackpowdermag.com/frank-and-lally-house-cla-featured-artists/http://www.kentuckymonthly.com/culture/kentucky-longrifle/http://www.housebrothersproject.com/articles/article1.htmlhttps://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/hunting/2013/04/hershel-house-guns-kentucky-flintlock/https://americanshootingjournal.com/exclusive-interview-with-frank-and-lally-house/Podcast theme music by Transistor.fm. NBC Article - On May 23, 2021 NBC News published an article that feels like a targeted hit piece aimed at muzzleloading enthusiasts around the United States. The article focuses on a crime that was committed with a blackpowder muzzleloading cap and ball revolver, we certainly agree the crime was horrible and any loss of life is upsetting, but the article attempts to demonize muzzleloaders in a way that we aren't familiar with. Pro-Gun control rhetoric has been saved for modern firearms for years, but I fear this marks the first foray into including muzzleloaders in the fight. Maybe I'm overly concerned, but I think the article is important for us to read and understand where the conversation about muzzleloaders could be going, so we may be properly prepared to preserve our passion for muzzleloading.

Read more today at ilovemuzzleloading.com May has just started and we already have big news for muzzleloading enthusiasts. Some unexpected news broke this week via the Outdoor Wire, Smith & Wesson has announced they will be divesting the Thompson/Center Arms brand. Sadly, Smith & Wesson haven't owned Thompson/Center for 20 years, having bought the company in 2006 and many feel S&W never gave the brand a chance, citing limited releases and support for their once best-selling muzzleloading rifles and the customers who shoot them. It's a sad day to see such an iconic brand being discarded by Smith and Wesson. With interest in muzzleloaders still climbing, they are losing out on a real opportunity. Hopefully, someone else will see the opportunity at hand and invest in Thompson/Center Arms, giving muzzleloading enthusiasts more choice in their next muzzleloader. Georgia House Bill 362 was signed into law on May 1, 2021, surrounded by a CVA Hat and the new Paramount HTR. Being their home state, perhaps CVA, and their parent company, BPI Outdoors had a hand in this new bill. Previously, the caliber limit was .44 caliber. This is a large change, taking the caliber size well below the needed .40 caliber to allow for the new CVA Paramount HTR and Knight Peregrine. It's an exciting time to be in the muzzleloading industry. Innovation keeps coming and it looks like some states want to keep sportsmen happy! Cap and ball shooters can rejoice! Schuetzen Black Powder just received 2 MILLION RWS caps today. Soon they will be on their way to distributors here in the states shortly. With shortages looking like they could continue through the better half of 2021, this is welcome news. “2 million RWS 1075s and 1075+ percussion caps shipping out to our distributors.
