We explore requiems today, specifically an upcoming performance of Mozart's Requiem with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra! First, the Rev. Brian Hamer, US Navy Chaplain, joins Andy and Sarah to talk about what a Requiem is and what texts make up a requiem, which ones are familiar to Lutherans, and how we can appreciate the beauty of requiems in light of our Lutheran doctrine. Read Chaplain Hamer's writing on the Requiem at whatdoesthismean.org/lifted-voice--brian-hamer/rescuing-the-requiem-the-sanctus. Then, mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor, performing the upcoming Mozart Requiem with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, joins Andy and Sarah to talk about her journey to becoming a professional vocalist, some of her favorite performances and composers, what makes Mozart's Requiem unique, and what she loves about singing this Requiem. Find more from Kelley at kelleyoconnor.com. Find more information about this performance from the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra on November 9 & 10 at shop.slso.org/8089. This show is a bit different today. Last year I did a live video podcast on Mozart's Requiem for my Patreon subscribers. I've now edited that show into an audio-only version for everyone to be able to listen to, since this is such an essential piece and there's so much to talk about with it! The audio only version won't get into as much granular detail as the video podcast did, and it won't include quite as many clips from the movie Amadeus, but all the same, we take a deep dive into Mozart's Requiem today, talking all about one of the greatest unfinished works in the history of art. We'll discuss the myths and legends behind the piece, the movements that Mozart started but never finished, and the completions of the score by different composers, especially the heavily criticized but still regularly used completion of Franz Sussmayr. We'll also talk about each movement in detail, exploring just what Mozart brought to the Requiem text. This piece has the distinction of being one of the greatest pieces ever written, just as it is, but also one of the great what-if stories in musical history. Join us to learn all about the Mozart Requiem, and if you want to see the full video version of the show, please head over to patreon.com/stickynotespodcast to find out how you can support the show.

1791, Wenen.

Recently, I chatted with author Judith Grohmann about her book, "The Real Mozart: The Original King Of Pop". This biography dives headfirst into the psychological workings of Mozart, as he navigates the explosive times of Viennese society during the enlightenment; his romantic and familial relationships, especially with his father Leopold; as well as, balancing the mundane task of earning money versus musical experimentation and expression. If you'd like to order the book, please visit Pen & Sword Books.I will also holding a draw for a free copy of the book. Just give the podcast a rating or review on Apple Podcasts and send a screenshot to TCMMPodcast@Gmail.com and you will be entered into the draw to win.

Requiem in D minor, K. 626 - VI. Benedictus Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart started composing the Requiem Mass in D minor (K. 626) in Vienna in 1791, following an anonymous commision from Count Franz von Walsegg, who requested the piece to commemorate the anniversary of his wife's death. Mozart passed away on December of 1791, however, having finished and orchestrated only one movement. The Requiem is widely considered one of Mozart's greatest works, and its composition process is surrounded a shroud of mistery and myths, usually attributed to Mozart's wife Constanze, who had to keep secret the fact that Mozart hadn't completed the work in order to be able to collect the final payment from the commision. It is commonly accepted that Mozart finished the Introitus, and left detailed sketches of the Kyrie and Dies Irae all the way to the first eight bars of the Lacrimosa and parts of the Offertory. There are now several completions of the Requiem Mass, though the most common by far (considered the standard version of the piece) is the one by Franz Xaver Süssmayr. He not only completed the movements Mozart left (borrowing an unespecified amount from Joseph von Eybler's previous attemps at completing the work) but also added several movements of his own: Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. He then added a final section, Lux aeterna by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass. The myth surrounding this work was increased by the fictional rivarly between Mozart and Antonio Salieri first expressed in 'Mozart and Salieri', a play by Alexander Pushkin, which in turn inspired an opera by Rismky Korsakov of the same name, the inmensely popular 1979 play 'Amadeus', by Peter Shaffer, and it's 1984 film adaptation by Miloš Forman. The Requiem is scored for 2 basset horns in F, 2 bassoons, 2 trumpets in D, 3 trombones (alto, tenor & bass), timpani (2 drums), violins, viola, and basso continuo (cello, double bass, and organ). The vocal forces include soprano, contralto, tenor, bass soloists, and an SATB mixed choir.

DescriptionThere has been much debate over the years as to how Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died. What had he suffered from that had taken his life at the early age of only thirty-six? Join me, as we take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactMost of us have seen the movie Amadeus, and the scene with Salieri pestering Mozart on his deathbed. However, there is little evidence that Salieri was present during Mozart's final hours. The cause of Mozart's death will surely be debated for decades to come, but we do know that he was buried in a common grave at St Marx Cemetery on 7 December 1791. Alon, Danny and Teddy play Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It was like running a marathon and then running the same course in reverse. Was it fun? Sort of. We're glad we did it. SotN is definitely smarter than it looks at first blush. It's dripping with style and the soundtrack is bananas. There was a lot that didn't age well, but that's okay.
The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a Requiem service to commemorate the anniversary of his wife's death on 14 February. Hip-hop artist and classical violinist, Miki Kekenj, joins the podcast to discuss the Concerto Köln education project, Speak!. For this project, the period-instrument orchestra, Concerto Köln combined to play the Mozart Requiem with the period-instrument youth orchestra, Jugendbarockorchester Rheinland, and the choir of the famous Cologne Cathedral, the Judgendchor am Kölner Dom. As well as playing the complete original piece, in between several movements, they also performed rap versions with classes of 8th grade students, taught and coached by Miki. He arranged the raps himself, while he taught the students to write the rap lyrics themselves. Miki taught these students about Mozart, the song-writing process, and bigger lessons of creativity and how to work together. We also talk about Miki's musical life, which is split between what many people would think to be two opposite types of music. Miki is the concert master of the Bergische Symphoniker and discusses how he got into hip-hop as a teen, how these two types of music have shaped him into the musician he is today, and how he can use rap to bring a new audience to classical music.

Here's a hint: a misconstrued musical murder mystery…
Here’s a hint: a misconstrued musical murder mystery…
My little brother is in town visiting, and he is the sound designer for the Boston Ballet, and on Wednesday night (I think) we got obliterated on gin and had something of a musical duel; each taking turns on the stereo, me playing some of the weirder stuff I listen to and him playing bits of classical music. Honestly, it was fucking ace. As a DJ set it would have absolutely delighted me anyway, even if everyone else ended up fucking off, but nevertheless, that evening was what music fandom is really about for me. So this podcast isn't really a recreation by any means (we are far, far too sober and nothing like argumentative enough for starters) but I thought it would be nice to do a podcast along those lines. Personally, it's maybe not even as classical as I might personally have liked it to be, but never mind, I really like it. And, as usual, there is a correction to be made. We describe the them tune to Star Trek Deep Space Nine as Theme for the Common Man, and apparently it isn't that at all. What it is is heavily heavily borrowed from Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man. So the bit of classical music Ben describes hearing before we play that song must actually have been Fanfare for the Common Man, which only reminded him of the Deep Space Nine theme without actually being it. Whoops. Next time research before talking! 01. Mozart - Requiem in D Minor (02.40) 02. Yann Tiersen - La Lettre d'Explication (16.18) 03. The Flaming Lips - Watching the Planets (23.33) 04.
