Part 2 - Jamila Russell is joined by Dr. Latashia Edwards, the Community Engagement Manager for the University of Virgin Islands Center for Excellence in Leadership and Learning, and Whitney George, Youth Empowerment Services. They discuss the Empower U Youth Summit being held across the territory.
Dr. Kristin Leitterman, a solo artist of oboe and voice, defies modern convention, bringing exciting and unusual programs to audiences. She has performed compositions employing both oboe and voice that she commissioned from Michael-Thomas Foumai, Jason Coleman, Whitney George, and Lyle Davidson in major concert venues around the world, taking her to Spain, Brazil, and Canada, as well as throughout the United States, including Carnegie Hall and Jordan Hall. As Assistant Professor of Oboe at Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, since 2018, Dr. Leitterman teaches oboe and bassoon and double reed techniques, coaches chamber ensembles, and acts as the woodwind area coordinator. For many years she has served as director of the Lucarelli Oboe Master Class, a weeklong immersive oboe workshop founded by Humbert Lucarelli. As a guest artist, she has presented master classes at many institutions, including Manhattan School of Music and New York University, both in New York City, and the Hartt School, West Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Leitterman has presented her research on the life and works of composers Mary Chandler and Marie de Grandval, as well as the musical autograph album of oboist and composer Gustave Vogt, at The Juilliard School, New York, Music by Women Festival, the International Double Reed Society conferences, and the conference of the Associação Brasileira de Palhetas Duplas (ABPD) in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. She holds degrees from the City University of New York's Graduate Center, the Hartt School, University of Hartford, the New England Conservatory of Music, and the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory. Besides her long association with Humbert Lucarelli, her teachers include Mark McEwen, Barbara Bishop, and Amy Burton (voice). We spoke about her new book, "Relax and Take a Deep Breath: The Lucarelli Approach to Oboe Playing", which is available from Carl Fischer. Follow Kristin at her website or on Instagram. Whitney George's music traverses the affective terrain between tragedy and ecstasy, fragility and strength, bringing together romantically delicate intimacy and the spectacular darkness of the macabre. Haunted by ghosts and/of love, George's operas, staged multimedia works, and chamber music coloristically explore the mysteries of irrationality, nightmare, and memory, sonically seeking lost objects and hidden subjects. Given George's theatrical inclinations and preoccupation with the tragic, she has turned again and again to opera as both a composer and conductor. Recently, George has been awarded a number of operatic commissions, premieres, and recognition: in 2017; the Elebash Award for her orchestration of Gideon's opera Fortunato, which premiered under George's baton in May 2019. In the same year; the commission of the two-act opera Princess Maleine by dell'Arte and the video opera Julie by New Camerata which was publicly released in 2020. This 2023 season, Fresh Squeezed commissions Fizz & Ginger, an immersive jazz experience, and the second operatic endeavor with libretitst Bea Goodwin. George is the artistic director and conductor of The Curiosity Cabinet, a chamber orchestra formed in 2009. She holds degrees from the California Institute of the Arts (2008), Brooklyn College (2010), and the CUNY Graduate Center (2021). The Power of Hype with Whitney GeorgeWe all need someone in our lives who can hype us when we need it. Maybe you are your own best hype-person, or maybe you have a person, or people, who you can go to when you need a pick-me-up to get you through whatever slump you might be in. Whitney George is a GO-TO hype mom, an entrepreneur, motivator-mindset coach, Pilates master trainer, and pre/postnatal expert. Yes, she wears all those hats! In today's episode, Whitney gets vulnerable and talks about why she is so passionate about hyping-up other women. It was not always this way for her, and it is a trait she has worked hard to nurture. We hear about the work she did to overcome her triggers and soften to the world. As someone so focused on helping people feel their best, Whitney understands the importance of taking a holistic approach to wellbeing. She shares how a difficult pregnancy led her to reflect on her health and why she felt compelled to share what she has learned with others. Our conversation also touches on why self-care is not selfish and the value of taking time to fill up your cup, the need for community as an entrepreneur, and the power of being receptive to help. So often, as women, we believe we have to do it all alone, but as Whitney shows us, when you have community and people to hype you, you can always go so much further than you could ever by yourself. Key Points From This Episode:• Where Whitney gets her boundless energy and ability to hype from. • Surrender, impact, joy, and peace: the four words Whitney wants to exude. • The role Whitney's mom played in her life and the work she did to feel less triggered by her behavior. • Whitney's involvement with yoga, which started when she was in college. • Hear about Whitney's experience of pregnancy, the difficulties she had, and how she came out on top. • How becoming a mother to girls changed Whitney's life and outlook. • Some of the products Whitney created to help pre and postnatal women. • The importance of doing one thing at a time to achieve a grand vision. • We have to be able to receive as well as give; it's not selfish to take care of ourselves. • The value of slowing down and just taking things moment by moment. • As an entrepreneur, you have to be your own hype person. • How Whitney preserves her energy so she can replenish her cup. • Being receptive to help is a skill that we have to learn to cultivate. Each movement is a different manifestation of self-talk. The first movement, “Fable,” describes an instance where the protagonist learns about themselves over time through trial and error. The rhythmic material of this movement was derived from a line of Jim Harrison's poetry: “I was a fable to myself.” The second movement, “Transformation,” describes a person's shifting perspective over time, which parallels the transformations of the melody after each musical interruption. The final movement, “Pursuit,” propels the protagonist toward a predetermined goal with a few unexpected turns along the way.” CT Summerfest Faculty: Chen Yi: https://conservatory.umkc.edu/profiles/faculty-directory/chen-yi.html Carlos Simon: http://coliversimon.com/ Ken Steen: https://www.kensteen.com/kensteen.htm Nina Young: http://www.ninacyoung.com/ Huge thanks to Trevor Weston and Whitney George for letting us include their music in our intro and outro! Gold bullion and gold stocks are different asset classes that serve different purposes; the former is a currency that hedges against fiat currencies, while the latter is more risky and gives leverage to the metal, said Whitney George, president of Sprott Inc.
Jesus loved speaking in parables. These parables often contained unlikely characters and shocking conclusions. Jesus used these parables (stories) to capture the listeners attentions and challenge them to think. In Luke 18 Jesus shares multiple parables that we will look at in this Scripture Study. Whitney's Bio: Whitney George's music traverses the affective terrain between tragedy and ecstasy, fragility and strength, bringing together romantically delicate intimacy and the spectacular darkness of the macabre. Her operas, staged multimedia works, and chamber music have had both international and domestic premieres. Most recently, George was commissioned by dell'Arte Opera to write Princess Maleine, an adaptation of a Grim fairytale. She received the 2017 Elebash Award for her orchestration of Miriam Gideon's opera Fortunato, which premiered under George's baton in May 2019. George is the artistic director and conductor of The Curiosity Cabinet, a chamber orchestra formed in 2009. She holds an undergraduate degree from the California Institute of the Arts, a master's degree from Brooklyn College, and is currently a PhD candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center. In addition to her composing and conducting, George teaches at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, works at the Hitchcock Institute of American Studies, and is on the composition faculty for Face the Music. Whitney George, portfolio manager of the Sprott Focus Trust, is a career-long value investor who has described himself at times as a "Buffett groupie" reflecting his long-standing admiration of the legendary investor. Like Buffett, George seeks to capitalize on the manic depressive behavior of the aggregate stock market, a group author Benjamin Graham memorably referred to as Mr. Market—the fictitious business partner who impulsively offers to sell his share of the business or to buy the reader's share every day. Unlike Buffett, however, George seeks value investment opportunities in gold and silver mining stocks, a practice Buffett famously eschews. In this exclusive interview with the Sprott U.S. Holdings CEO, Rick Rule, George takes us through his career as professional money manager and explains his rare interest in both value investing and natural resource companies. Often times, when younger leaders push for change, older leaders will struggle with allowing the change and not completely support them. You have to be willing to back your younger leaders' ideas like they were your own, and don't throw them under the bus if their ideas fall through. Relevancy is not as important as what the church's values are. Remember what your church is built upon, and don't try and change it just for the sake of making it more attractive for younger people. Whit expressed that his ultimate desire for church is for it to allow life change, and the “relevant” tools we use, such as lights and haze, are just that--tools. As long as they are working towards the goal of furthering God's Kingdom, then they will be utilized. Have extreme intentionality. Work hard, because you care. Everything you do has to have a reason behind it. Whit shared that he works hard because he is intentional with everything he does. Every worship set, graphic, and sermon series should be chosen with care and consideration. Always ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” Quotes From This Episode: “People are naturally afraid of change.” - Whit George “Go slower than you think you need to...but don't move until you have complete conviction.” - Whit George “Young people are smart enough to be able to smell the same package wrapped in a different wrapper.” - Whit George “You have to care about the people of your community as much or more so as the people you already have.” - Whit George “Lights and smoke have never made anything relevant. Relevant is about what it means in your life.” - Whit George “A lot of people are allowing a model to create change rather than culture.” - Josh Gagnon “We have to be okay with the reality that there are churches that won't be like us that still work today.” - Josh Gagnon “The only thing that I care about is that what I'm working on works.” - Whit George “When we're wowed, we have a tendency to say ‘how?'...If you flip that around and you have a bad experience, you don't ask ‘how?' you just ask ‘why?'” - Whit George
