A soprano of "fearlessness and consummate artistry" (Opera News), Ah Young Hong has interpreted a vast array of repertoire, ranging from the music of Monteverdi to Georg Friedrich Haas. Widely recognized for her work in Michael Hersch's monodrama, On the Threshold of Winter, The New York Times praised Ms. Hong's performance in the world premiere as "the opera's blazing, lone star." Recent performances include solo appearances with violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Bern, and at both the Aldeburgh and Ojai Music Festivals. Highlight concerts of 2021-2022 include the premiere performances in the title role of Hersch's POPPAEA at the Wien Modern and ZeitRäume Basel Festivals. Anticipated this fall is the recording of Hersch's the script of storms with BBC Symphony Orchestra under the New Focus label. Ms. Hong is an associate professor in the Vocal Studies Department of The Peabody Conservatory of Music, Johns Hopkins University. In this episode, I speak with the great composer Georg Friedrich Haas. I try find out what he has to say about "interpretation", this space between what a composer writes down and what a musician makes of it. We speak about communicating your ideas with an orchestra, teaching young composers and writing for Austrian brass bands.

I have the magnificent Mollena Lee Williams Haas as my guest. We speak about the opera Sycorax and its characters. About women in opera, people of color in opera, and generally about how to make stories that translate to as many people as possible. About opera as a way to make people see what life is. Also, about Georg Friedrich Haas, and about our previous collaboration in Mollena's and GF's joint piece Hyena. The music is an excerpt of Hyena, the live recording of the première at Wien Modern, with Mollena speaking, Klangforum Wien playing and me conducting. The recording can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oa4uCKbj4g&list=RD5oa4uCKbj4g&start_radio=1 By the way, contrary to what I'm announcing in the talk, we heard a bit of the BEGINNING of Hyena, not the ending. Mollena's own podcast can be found here: https://allthatandmo.com

How long should you be in control of your art? Should you have "final cut" on each performance, or is the performance itself a separate piece of art?Today, I discuss that and more with my lovely Spousemeister, Georg Friedrich Haas, composer extraordinaire. Is it a Dominant act if your Master ordered you to do it to them? Storytelling Superstar Mollena Williams-Haas adores her Austrian Composer husband and master, so when he decides that it's time to revisit some (possibly traumatic) sexual territory, she worries… who will nurture and care for Herr Meister the way that he deserves?
I'm thrilled to bring the unique Mollena Lee Williams-Haas to the show. She is a New York City-born writer, actress, performer, BDSM educator, storyteller, podcast host and award-winning executive pervert. She has written and co-authored many books, including "Playing Well With Others" and "The Toybag to Guide to Play with Taboo." In this extra-long, expensive lashes-type episode, we had a priceless conversation about the freedom to express ourselves, to live the life we feel is better for us and to give ourselves permission to be who we really are. We talk about Mollena's bravery to talk openly about her sexual life, the demons she fought while recovering from alcoholism, and how that openness to discuss those topics opened so many doors to her and lots of other people. What You Will Learn In This Episode: - Who Mollena is, the operas she has written and performed, and what we can expect from her next one called "Hyena" - What we can learn from the evil Kirk/bad Kirk analogy that inspired Mollena - How Mollena overcame her addiction, what she learned and continues to learn daily from that experience - Mollena's way of dealing with criticism and how her fuckrupcy helps her deal with haters - How TikTok's democratization of entertainment is actually good to spread information and educate people After seeing a Broadway show live, Mollena decided she wanted to be an actress. A few years later, she performed in the movie "The Wiz." After moving to Los Angeles in 1992, she co-starred in the independent cult-classic "America's Deadliest Home Video," considered the grandfather of "found footage," a genre that will shine with "Man Bites Dog" and "The Blair Witch Project." Mollena began her explorations of BDSM by subscribing to the newsletter published by the Society of Janus and exploring kink and fetish via the newly burgeoning world of online chat forums. In 2016 a piece about her BDSM relationship with her husband Georg Friedrich Haas was published in the New York Times, and today, she is an inductee of the Society of Janus Hall of Fame. It's hard to frame the Jazz or classical scene in Wisconsin or the upper-midwest over the last 30 years without considering the contributions of Dave Cooper. He has been an Associate Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin--Platteville for 15 years, and an essential member of more groups than I can possibly mention here. Dave's latest chapter is propelled by his study of the modern improvisational techniques practiced by some of today's most innovative improvisers, as evidenced by his writing for his group QUAD.For those keeping score: the composer's name that I couldn't remember is Georg Friedrich Haas, and the saxophonist who explores microtonality that Dave didn't name is Steve Lehman.
Today's guest is Christine Chapman, an eclectic American horn player, and a member of the innovative and explosive Ensemble Musikfabrik. I will read her bio now for those listeners who might not be familiar with her work. Raised in the coastline woods of western Michigan, Christine Chapman has traveled far and wide to pursue her passion for music. In 1990, after finishing her musical studies at the University of Michigan and Indiana University, she broke out of the rural heartland of America for an orchestra job on the still fresh border between East and West Germany. The desire to gain a bit of work experience before returning to the States has since turned into a quarter of a century of exploration and adventure. As a member of Ensemble Musikfabrik, Christine Chapman has had the opportunity to collaborate directly with many of today's greatest composers, premiering and performing works by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Wolfgang Rihm, Peter Eötvös, Rebecca Saunders and Georg Friedrich Haas, among others. The experience of performing "outside of the box", such as with the music of Harry Partch, La Monte Young, Sun Ra, or Mouse on Mars, is the main impetus of her work. "Trying to see through the technicalities of playing to bring out the soul of the music; that is what's so exciting for me.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

In the 7th episode of Darmstadt On Air we are witnessing the start of a new artistic collaboration between two extraordinary musicians: Marco Blaauw, trumpet player of Ensemble Musikfabrik, soloist and Darmstadt brass tutor has started a series of seven commissions that take the human breath as their main idea and inspiration. Ayanna Witter-Johnson will contribute one of the new pieces for trumpet. Born in London into a family with a Jamaican background, Ayanna's musical expression is taking many different shapes: she is a singer-songwriter, composer, cellist, pianist and performer who embraces various musical cultures and, as she names it, navigates transnational identity within her music. After a first e-mail and Skype exchange, they met in person on 4 September 2020 in Cologne on the occasion of the premiere of Ayanna's commission for Gürzenich Orchestra and conductor François-Xavier Roth. Sitting in the Musikfabrik studios (with musical rehearsals in the background), they had also listened to Marco's interpretation of Georg Friedrich Haas' lament in the memory of Eric Garner from 2015 with the title "I can't breathe". In their conversation they touch topics like belonging and background, everyday experiences of being a black woman, being a black female artist and the burden of having to represent that group. They talk about white privilege, about one's personal sound, about being on the fringes of may worlds and about bringing other people into the space.

Concert Chamber ensemble Loop38 Described as a “masterpiece” and “monumental work” by the New York Times and The Guardian, respectively, Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas’ hour-long work for twenty-four musicians, in vain (2000), creates an unforgettable listening experience. Just as “the natural light that illuminates the murals...accurately show the nuances and subtleties of [Rothko’s] color palette” in Rothko Chapel, the absence of light is used in Haas’ in vain to create an experience of “waves of opulently strange, beautiful sounds”. With most of the music performed in complete darkness as the performers play from memory, the sounds are liberated, and “the focus lies on what is trapped under listening habits”. While many works of Haas have been performed to great acclaim in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, and London, he has yet to be discovered in Houston. With an emphasis on achieving artistic excellence and a passion to create unique aural experiences for the community, Loop38 is excited to include the Texas premiere of this demanding work in their first season. Co-founded by conductor Jerry Hou and pianist Yvonne Chen at the Shepherd School of Music in 2016, chamber ensemble Loop38 is comprised entirely of Houston transplants, bringing their unique musical experiences from all over the world to share with the Houston community. Its members hold degrees from The Juilliard School, Peabody Institute, Cleveland Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, Yale University, University of Michigan, University for the Arts in Bremen, Germany, and Oberlin Conservatory. Members of the group have worked with composers such as Steve Reich, Pierre Boulez, Gyorgy Kurtag, Helmut Lachenmann, Bernard Rands, Unsuk Chin, and Mark-Anthony Turnage. www.loop38.org
Meet the Composer is thrilled to bring you a world-premiere recording as our first bonus track of Season Three! Our previous episode The Performer: Part One featured, among other things, a really fascinating conversation with the Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas (if you haven’t heard the episode yet, go check it out!). As we are a talk show about music, we are always dying to simply play some music, and so today we bring you our exclusive, first recording of Haas’ 9th String Quartet. The whole thing! Featuring the fantastic JACK Quartet. The JACK Quartet has spent years performing and championing an older piece of Haas’, his 3rd String Quartet. They played it so well, in fact, Haas decided to write his 9th quartet specifically for the JACKs, taking full advantage of their superpower: just intonation. So we figured, what could be better than having the JACKs over to Q2 Music to bring this piece to life? Like his 3rd String Quartet, this piece comes with an unusual stipulation: it is to be performed in complete, india ink, can’t-see-your-hand-in-front-of-your-face darkness. So turn out the lights and join Meet the Composer and the JACKs for the first-ever recording of this spectacular piece of oddly-tuned awesome. –Nadia Sirota
We're kicking off Season Three of Meet the Composer with a look beyond the composer to the performer, that unusual intermediary between the artist and the audience. How do performers from different cultures, who speak different languages, come together to perform the same piece? What happens when an ensemble completely messes up... and the audience loves it? How does a piece change when it’s played nonstop for twelve hours? We explore these questions and more, taking a seat on stage as we find out what it’s like to experience music from the inside-out. Sex educator, BDSM practitioner, and kink expert Mollena Williams is the guest on this week's installment of The Chauncey DeVega Show. She is the author of the book Playing Well With Others. Mollena Williams also travels across the country (and world) where she gives seminars and lectures on human sexuality, being sex positive, and the pleasures of being open to one's deepest sexual desires. Mollena was recently featured in a New York Times story about her marriage to world renowned composer Georg Friedrich Haas. In this fun and adult conversation, Mollena Williams and Chauncey talk about her life path, questions of sexual freedom and happiness, kink, "race play", white supremacy, and happiness in a person's intimate life. Chauncey and Mollena also dialogue about modern day black chattel slavery sex "plantations", the boundaries and rules of playing with sex and race, concerns about dignity, and how control of one's body and pleasure is an integral (and little discussed) part of the Black Freedom Struggle. Mollena Williams is a funny, smart, and great conversation partner. During this week's grown folks episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Chauncey also talks about his post Chicago Trump media appearances, complains about how a picture of him online does not do justice to his real beauty, warns Hillary Clinton about how Donald Trump will attack her in the 2016 presidential election, and discusses the Hulk Hogan penis trial and the legendary members of American presidents.
In the first episode of Talking Musicology we discuss two articles: Georgina Born and Kyle Devine on music, gender and class in UK higher education, and Robert Hasegawa on the harmonic techniques of Georg Friedrich Haas.
