Not the World Cup was a "glorious celebration of classical and world music" that ran alongside a small men's football competition in late 2022. Each team in each game of the football was represented by a short piece of (largely classical) music - 110 pieces in all from 107 composers (including 41 pieces by women): loads of great music and loads of new discoveries. I got together with my friend the conductor and writer Lev Parikian to pick some highlights and talk about a few of the things we learnt - about music, about how we listen and how it makes us feel. Listening time 41 mins. Here's a Youtube playlist of our favourite things of all from Not the World Cup and a playlist of everything that was clipped in the episode. What do you think? Let me know with a comment at cacophonyonline.com. I'd love to hear from you! You can learn more about Lev Parikian, his books, gigs, writing, nature projects, etc., at: https://levparikian.com and also on Substack & Twitter. Unsuk Chin 1961-ben született Szöulban. Húszas évei elején számtalan díjat nyert, majd 1985-ben Ligeti Györgynél tanult a Hamburgi Zene- és Színházművészeti Főiskolán. Pályafutása kezdetén az elektronikus zene inspirálta, a témák helyett inkább az elvont hangzásképek érdekelték. Áttörést hozó Akrostichon-Wortspiel című művét 1991-ben komponálta. Azóta Chin zenéjét a világon mindenhol játsszák és idén ő lehet az első ázsiai származású zeneszerző, aki megkaphatja a Sonning Zenei Díjat.

In the second of three companion programmes to BBC TV's Civilisations series, Tom Service unpicks western music's debt to the exotic and ponders the allure of western music for other cultures. Reflecting contemporary attitudes and trends in fashion and the arts, the exotic has long cast its spell on western composers. Mozart catered to the 18th-century Viennese craze for all things Turkish; in 19th-century France the exotic stretched east to Indonesia and Japan. More recently, the music of Africa has attracted the likes of Steve Reich and György Ligeti. And 150 years ago, as Japan opened up to outside influences, western culture became suddenly desirable in the east, with profound and lasting consequences. But what does it take to make the exotic in music more than a titillating and imperialist added extra? Including contributions from composer Unsuk Chin, and cultural historian of Japan, Jonathan Service. David Papp (producer).

Piano Trio No. 1 in E flat major Op.1 No.1: IV. Finale (Presto), interprété par le Chung Trio. Pluto, par Sufjan Stevens. Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 23, TH. 55: I. Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso - Allegro con spirito par Chung Trio.
Concert Chamber ensemble Loop38 Described as a “masterpiece” and “monumental work” by the New York Times and The Guardian, respectively, Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas’ hour-long work for twenty-four musicians, in vain (2000), creates an unforgettable listening experience. Just as “the natural light that illuminates the murals...accurately show the nuances and subtleties of [Rothko’s] color palette” in Rothko Chapel, the absence of light is used in Haas’ in vain to create an experience of “waves of opulently strange, beautiful sounds”. With most of the music performed in complete darkness as the performers play from memory, the sounds are liberated, and “the focus lies on what is trapped under listening habits”. While many works of Haas have been performed to great acclaim in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, and London, he has yet to be discovered in Houston. With an emphasis on achieving artistic excellence and a passion to create unique aural experiences for the community, Loop38 is excited to include the Texas premiere of this demanding work in their first season. Co-founded by conductor Jerry Hou and pianist Yvonne Chen at the Shepherd School of Music in 2016, chamber ensemble Loop38 is comprised entirely of Houston transplants, bringing their unique musical experiences from all over the world to share with the Houston community. Its members hold degrees from The Juilliard School, Peabody Institute, Cleveland Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, Yale University, University of Michigan, University for the Arts in Bremen, Germany, and Oberlin Conservatory. Members of the group have worked with composers such as Steve Reich, Pierre Boulez, Gyorgy Kurtag, Helmut Lachenmann, Bernard Rands, Unsuk Chin, and Mark-Anthony Turnage. www.loop38.org
Originally from China, the sheng is a traditional instrument – a mouth organ – with a three-thousand year history. Its sound was part of Korean composer Unsuk Chin’s childhood and she had long dreamed of writing for it. She was inspired finally to fulfil her dream when she heard the playing of sheng virtuoso Wu Wei. With the help of Wu, Chin began the long, collaborative process of learning how to write for sheng which resulted in the remarkable Šu for sheng and orchestra – and a deep friendship between composer and performer.
