In this episode, we learn more about another amazing 12 Oaks neighbor. I am talking with the Maggy Award winner for Best Therapist in Western Wake and the Food Truck Queen of 12 Oaks. She was also a finalist during Indy Week, Best of the Triangle 2020 for Best Couples Therapist and Best Therapist. We talk about her move from Rhode Island, Virginia, then Florida and finally to North Carolina. Erin Bircher is a Psychotherapist, Life Coach, and owner and founder of Foundations 4-Change. She helps individuals break through barriers, work through difficult situations, set boundaries, and helps to explore any limiting belief systems that may be preventing them from leading the life they truly desire. Erin was born in Providence, Rhode Island. At the age of two, she and her mom moved to Northern Virginia where she grew up in the small town of Leesburg. After graduating high school, Erin’s mom told her she had to take at least one class at the local community college. She ended up taking psychology and that class captured Erin’s love and focus on what she wanted to do with her life. Erin has been married to her husband Jay since 2017 and has two boys, Ashton and Dylan. It was wonderful getting to know Erin and learning more about her and how she helps people every day through some of the most difficult times in their lives. We are so fortunate to have Erin as our neighbor and soon to be a friend to many more of us. In This Episode: [02:35] Welcome Erin Bircher our 18th “P” in the pod[cast]. She is a Psychotherapist and Life Coach. [04:52] In 2003, she moved to Miami to gain her Masters of Counseling degree from Florida International University. [06:11] In 2019, Erin completed the certification to become a Life Coach. [08:23] She grew up in the small town of Leesburg, Virginia. She played a lot of soccer growing up and also spent a lot of time working with children. [09:24] Even though Erin had no interest in college her mom pushed her to take one class at the community college. The one class she took was psychology and she realized what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. [10:07] She went to the Dominican Republic and worked in an orphanage for a week. It was a life changing experience. [11:22] She values all of her experiences because she has learned and grown a lot and she has helped a lot of people because of the things she has gone through. [11:56] She has a true love of the outdoors which she credits to growing up on 8-10 acres as a child. [13:08] Respect goes a long way. Everybody wants to feel appreciated and respected. [13:47] One of the biggest things that stood out to Erin is the importance of working hard. [15:19] Erin shares why she fell in love with psychology. [16:14] Working in the Nonprofit Agencies was a lot of hard work, she learned a lot, and it laid the groundwork for what she is doing now. [18:12] She shares that everyone that comes into therapy has some aspect of their life that they want to be different, so they have to do something different. [20:12] She realized that the more vulnerable that she became, the more vulnerable her clients became. [21:25] Erin tells what it's like as a Day in the Life of a psychotherapist. It is different since the pandemic because now she sees her clients virtually. [22:52] At first the virtual meetings were hard for Erin because she liked sitting with people, but she is getting used to it now. [25:35] Being a life coach opens up more doors for Erin to be able to do different work in different capacities and mix it up. [27:14] In the next 5-10 years Erin hopes to be doing more speaking engagements and workshops. She is putting her hands in different areas and meeting new people to see what different doors open. [29:45] She is working towards different credentials for life coaching. [31:44] Erin is the Food Truck Queen of 12 Oaks and is excited to host more food trucks in the future. [34:30] Erin met Jay online. They had an instant commonality because of their fur babies. They met downtown at a restaurant and they hit it off. [35:29] Erin and Jay like to stay busy, travel a lot, and have fun. [36:47] She shares how there's never a dull moment hanging out with her boys. They are full of life and always want to be on the go. They love their two golden doodles and their bernedoodle. [38:50] Why did you choose 12 Oaks? They have lived in 12 Oaks for 4 years. [40:34] If you’re looking for resort style living with a lot of fun and different activities for all different ages 12 Oaks is your place to be. [42:22] What are you most proud of? [43:23] If you had a do-over in life, what would it be? [45:04] In the closing chapter of your life, what would the work you’ve done say about you? [46:04] Is there a question I should have asked but I didn’t? In this episode, we mixed it up a bit. Instead of interviewing one neighbor, I am actually interviewing three neighbors. You may have seen these amazing neighbors on the cover and feature article in the “Meet your Neighbors” section of the March 2020 edition of the 12 Oaks Living Magazine, or getting their cajun, low-country boil on at the 12 Oaks, Club’s Mardi Gras Party, or hosting the end of Summer Slam at the Pond. One of these neighbors is also responsible for the daily “pee in your pants jokes” on the 12 Oaks Community Facebook page. We also talk about insurance, relationships, jokes, hockey, sports cars, and of course Frozen 2. Ryan Wagner is a 3rd generation State Farm Agent. Ryan was born and raised in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. Ryan is a trivia extraordinaire, enjoys playing golf, and is an avid runner. Katrina Wagner is the owner of Goosehead Independent Insurance Agency. She was born and raised in Capac, Michigan. At the age of 27, Katrina was a Dale Carnegie Instructor for seven years. She has also been a music minister since 1995. Their daughter Ellorie started kindergarten this year and is all things Frozen 2. She can often be found cruising the neighborhood in her sports car. It was great “Hangin’ Out with the Wagners.” They are a blast and a very special family. In This Episode: [03:19] Welcome Ryan, Katrina, and Ellorie Wagner. They are our 17th “P” in the pod[cast]. [04:49] We have all come to love Ryan’s “pee in your pants” jokes on the 12 Oaks Community Facebook page. [09:21] Katrina shares all about growing up on a dirt road and riding around on her banana seat bike. Her parents were amazing gardeners and taught them to live by the earth. [10:47] After high school she went to Japan as an exchange student. She shares this experience and it was a life-changing experience. [13:13] Wendell connected with Katrina because he is also the baby of the family. His mom was a major seamstress. [13:49] Ryan had a unique early childhood experience living in a foster care home. [17:32] Katrina shares about her new blog on Instagram called The Pretend Food Blog. She started the blog to be a tourist in her own town. [19:31] Ryan shares about the half marathon where he got to run out of the tunnel at Lambeau Field. He was so proud of this accomplishment because he is not a natural long-distance runner. [21:21] He has his eyes and feet set on conquering the Annual Walt Disney World half-marathon. [22:01] Hard work, persistence, and giving back are Ryan’s top values. Katrina shares the importance of investing in yourself and others. [26:34] Ryan shares about the hard work he put in at his first job at the golf club and how after a rough year it finally paid off. [29:53] Ryan joined the Kiwanis Club and later became president. [32:21] Ryan actually tried to avoid the insurance field at first, but then he realized the power of helping families with important insurance needs. [33:33] Katrina became a small business owner right out of school and much faster than she had anticipated. She is really passionate about owning her own business. [35:27] In the class of 2012 Ryan received national recognition as one of the top 100 new insurance agents with State Farm. [37:02] Ryan really focused on the people and processes in his business. [42:44] She engages with other people in a way that is intentional and genuine because ultimately it comes down to relationships. [44:34] She is all about collaboration over competition. [45:16] Ellorie joins Wendell and shares that she likes math and reading best at school this year. She wants to be a dentist when she grows up. [46:26] Katrina was the co-partner of the Summer Slam at the Pond. [67:15] Halloween shortly after moving to 12 Oaks was a very fond memory for them. They are really looking forward to this year. [68:42] Katrina, what are you most proud of? [70:57] Investing in young people and giving them fire and confidence is the number one thing she has done aside from being a great mom and wife. [71:59] Ryan, If you had a mulligan in life, what would it be? [73:54] Katrina, when it is time to say farewell, what would Ryan be known for? [75:29] Ryan, when it is time to say farewell, what would Katrina be known for? [79:02] Katrina helps people find those talents they didn’t know they had, embrace them, and making them life long skills they use. [80:24] What question did Wendell not ask that he should have? [81:37] The investment of time her dad made to drive her 90 minutes away for 12 weeks was huge for her. The relationship between a father and the commitment he has to his daughter sets the tone for what kind of man will fill that role in her life in the future. What does the largest outdoor swimming pool in the country, Portugal, the University of Rhode Island, and lots of golf have to do with 12 Oaks? Golf may be an easy connection, but you don’t want to miss this conversation including the question I should have asked, but didn’t. Do you know someone in the neighborhood that resembles Richard Gere? Tune in as we put these pieces together to learn about another 12 Oaks member. Ed Hanley is a PGA professional and our own general manager, right here in 12 Oaks. At the age of 14, he started working at a golf course and immediately fell in love. He has been a PGA professional for 20 years and a general manager for the past 10 years. Sports have been a part of his life for as long as he can remember and are responsible for his work ethic and business style. Ed was born and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island. He is the oldest child from a proud Portguese family. They gather together each summer at his aunt’s house in Portugal to catch up with his family that are still living in Portugal. After high school, Ed went to the University of Rhode Island. Ed is married to his wife Maclin and they have two children, but we can’t forget their four-legged 3rd child. It was great getting to know Ed even more. We are so fortunate to have Ed as our general manager and golf pro. Be sure to stop into the club and visit Ed. In This Episode: [02:24] Welcome Ed Hanley our 15th “P” in the pod[cast]. He is a PGA professional and general manager of 12 Oaks. [04:11] Ed and Maclin recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. [05:53] Ed shares about growing up in Rhode Island. [06:11] His mother was from Portugal and his father from an Irish family. He lived in a diverse neighborhood. It was a great way to experience life. [07:49] His mother’s family is/was from San Miguel, Portugal. [08:28] When you immigrate to a new country everyone has to stick together and that played a huge part in their family’s closeness. Your bigger family is truly your entire family. [10:07] When you recognize and see the sacrifice of what my aunts and uncles did by leaving, it truly empowers you to know that you can do anything. There are no limitations or ceiling. [11:12] Ed enjoys putting smiles on peoples’ faces the most. [11:02] His values and how he puts smiles on peoples’ faces starts with respect. You have to respect everybody. [13:25] One of the most important things he learned was the value of hard work. Once you are taking responsibility for something, you now have an obligation to work as hard as possible to deliver on whatever it was that you took responsibility for. [16:01] His employment began at age fourteen when the golf course said they might as well put him to work since he was already there everyday. His first job was as a weekend starter before they took tee times. [17:05] He did very well and climbed up the ranks. He fell in love with the golf business. [18:55] Ed was the men’s golf coach at Brown University from 2002-2007. He learned a lot about managing and motivating as the golf coach. [21:31] He loved learning from the players about their background, what motivated them, and where they were going with their lives. It was a very enriching experience for him. [24:15] Today is today, but how you work today is going to explain what you are doing tomorrow and the next day. The better you are at what you do, the better the team performs. [27:26] He took the job at 12 Oaks to have a positive impact on all the departments and elevate the experience for the members of 12 Oaks. [28:08] Ed shares a typical “day in the life” as a general manager at 12 Oaks. [30:01] He is a golf guy and will always be a golf guy. He loves the business of golf and golfers. It is in his blood. [32:41] Planning is a challenge at the club because of the pandemic and the unknown. The focus now is safety. [34:06] We really need to be creative in our thinking right now. The pandemic is just another challenge. [36:11] The pandemic has almost put a microscope over things, so we have to be good at what we do all the time. [39:09] The advisory committee is the voice of the people. Their role is to share what the people are saying so Ed can act on that. He really enjoys making everything better. [41:17] Ed shares his fondest memories in 12 Oaks. He loved the reaction after the Fall Ball. [44:08] He met Maclin at a club called The Elbow Room in downtown Providence. It was fate that they met, because it was a place that neither of them would have typically gone to. [46:57] Ed shares about their two children, William and AnaClaire. [47:45] Ed loves hanging out with his kids. William is serious and very to the point and AnaClaire is more on the fun side and enjoys laughing and enjoying life. They are very different from each other and they are both successful in their own endeavors. [49:19] They rescued their four-legged third child, AnaBelle. [50:40] What are you most proud of? [52:01] If you had a mulligan in life, what would that be? [53:19] When it is time to say farewell, what would you be known for? [53:47] Which actor would play Ed Hanley? Siobhan Carroll was born and raised in Bloomfield, New Jersey just outside of New York City. She is the middle of three daughters, born to Irish Catholic, New Yorkers. Siobhan attended Catholic schools her entire life including Villanova University in Pennsylvania. After one “ill-conceived semester at Seton Hall Law School” she moved to Washington, D.C. During her 20 years in the DC area, her world changed, significantly. 14 years ago she married her husband Marc. Marc and Siobhan are very proud parents of 3 daughters. I am intrigued by Siobhan’s ability to have a “pulse” on everything. This interview was “waaay” too much fun. She is so amazing, heart-warming, and smart too. I’m honored to share her story with all of you. There’s no doubt in my mind that this will be one of those “edge of your seat” experiences, for all. We are delighted to have Siobhan, Marc, and the girls as part of the 12 Oaks family, for the past 11 months and hopefully, many more to come. In This Episode: [02:01] Welcome Siobhan Carroll our 10th “P” in the pod[cast]. She has spent her entire life, developing skills in pursuit of proprietorship. [02:49] Siobhan has realized the formula to success is reading the customer right and leveraging the talents of subject matter experts. [04:44] Lucky for all of us 12 Oakers, Siobhan, Marc and the girls moved to 12 Oaks 11 months ago. [06:29] She was born and raised in Bloomfield, New Jersey and describes this experience as fun. [07:44] She spent a lot of time on her bike and played outside until the lights came on. [08:37] Siobhan learned the value of education from her parents. [10:34] She was instilled with the belief if you work hard, learn, and you continue to have curiosity about the world around you, you are setting yourself up for success down the line. [13:24] She loved her time and had a blast at Villanova. She is also a huge college basketball fan. [15:28] Siobhan shares the story about when her and her friends camped out for basketball season tickets. [18:08] Law school felt like the right path for her based on a number of things. [19:14] For many different reasons, she decided to leave law school, start working at a temp agency and she never looked back. [20:12] She had a variety of careers in her pursuit to proprietorship. [20:19] In terms of the work ethic that was instilled in her by her family, it is hard for her to think of a time when she didn’t have a job. Early on in her life she became the lawn mower of the family. [21:12] In high school she transitioned from a well-loved babysitter to working at McDonald’s. [22:21] During her time at McDonald’s she learned how to make delicious fries of course, but she also learned the basics of the customer service...needs and other skill sets that really helped transfer over to the rest of her career. [24:26] The other thing she really learned at McDonald’s is how other people think and how their experience(s) wasn’t the same as her’s. [25:45] Siobhan started waitressing at an Italian restaurant in Bloomfield. The most fascinating people she has ever met have been chefs. [27:44] She learned very early on when to let things roll off her back and when to push back and put her foot down. [28:16] You will always come across people in your life who you don’t agree with, who don’t treat you well, who don’t like you, or who you don’t like and in some way you have to find a way to either get along with them or contain and move along in your life, away from those sort of folks. [30:23] At Blackboard, Siobhan managed higher education accounts mostly in the states. [32:44] She chose to move on from Blackboard and try some other things. Her friendship with Sarah persisted and then she came back to Blackboard a few years later. [35:36] Siobhan and Marc were not finding the new home they wanted and when they came to visit her sister-in-law and they decided to look around and found 12 Oaks. [35:57] 12 Oaks has a lot that is very attractive as well as the high tension wires which made her feel right at home. [36:48] Driving through 12 Oaks reminds her of the Truman Show. It is a beautiful neighborhood with great amenities. [37:16] Siobhan shares how she got into the Wine and Beer business. [38:37] She loves that wine has the ability to bring people together. [40:12] At the new member orientation back in August there were many people interested in forming a new, additional Wine Club. [42:15] The Wine Club has been a great way to get to know people and a great way to get out of the house. [43:24] She doesn’t like to complain, instead she likes to contribute something that is going to be constructive. [44:27] Siobhan feels that if she has a conversation with someone and has not learned something she has really missed out. She has a curiosity around people, society, who we are and where we are going, plus a continued curiosity about how things work. [46:25] Siobhan loves social media and feels like it is a great distraction. [48:49] She does like new experiences, but she needs to feel a certain element of control. [52:04] Middle children are usually referred to as the diplomat, because you are usually between two strong personalities and are trying to negotiate and figure out how you can get what you want out of the situation. [54:01] Being around people is what she needs, but she also tries to give it back as much as humanly possible. [54:38] Siobhan shares the story about how her and Marc met. [57:13] She loves hanging out with her girls a lot. All three of them are curious and fun kids. [59:04] One of the main things she has learned from her girls is their love for nature. [59:53] Siobhan shares the story about their recent animal excursion at the farms. [60:40] She hates snakes and has been blessed with Nora who is obsessed with all reptiles and amphibians. [62:57] She shares about her love for cooking. [65:09] When her first daughter was born she decided to buckle down and learn how to cook and she loved it. She loves cooking baked meals and having people over. [67:46] She loves exposing her kids to new things and they love helping her cook. [67:30] What are you most proud of? [69:24] What would be a surprise that most people wouldn’t know about you? It is hard to believe it is already our 10th episode and 9th neighbor interview. It was my complete honor to interview the Legendary Coach, Wes Moore. Coach Wes Moore was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. His mom raised him and his two older sisters. He could be found playing whatever sport was in season until it got dark outside. Then college brought him to the state of Tennessee where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He is married to Linda, a former Miss North Carolina contestant and absolutely the sweetest woman you would ever want to meet. Coach Moore was named the 4th Head Coach in the program history of the North Carolina State University, Women’s Basketball team on April 4th, 2013. In his seven years coaching the Wolfpack women, he has achieved numerous accolades including a 73% winning record, 4 NCAA tournament appearances, and most recently Coach Moore led the NC State Wolfpack to become the ACC Tournament Title Champs. This was the program’s first conference tournament championship in 29 years. Prior to his time at NC State, Coach Moore racked up more stats as a coach in South Carolina and Tennessee. Coach Moore has been a head coach for 31 years and 12 of those years received “Coach of the Year” honors including the 2019 Associated Press National Coach of the Year Runner-Up. He was the only coach in NCAA history, to take three different teams to a national tournament, at each NCAA level…Division I, Division II, and Division III. From Delaware to Philly to California to New York and now North Carolina - who is Wendie Lubinsky? From one side of the country to the other and back again, Wendie bleeds red and black and cheers Anteaters. Wendie has owned not one, but two businesses. We are so lucky that in 2019 Wendie and the twins were looking for a different quality of life that brought them to 12 Oaks. It is really an honor to share her story with you. Wendie was born in Wilmington, Delaware, but lived in Philadelphia until the age of five. Her family moved to San Francisco, where she grew up. Wendie was able to graduate high school at the age of 16, and moved, by herself, to San Diego to attend college. After graduation in 2002, Wendie relocated to New York City for three years before moving, with her then, husband, to Westchester County to start a family. In 2011, they were blessed, with a set of beautiful twin girls, Samantha and Taylor. 2019 finally brought them here to the 12 Oaks community. Join her for her online fitness classes. Hopefully, soon she will be back to in-person classes here at 12 Oaks. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. Wendie is such an inspiration. The Talk of 12 Oaks podcast is exclusively for the neighbors, about the neighbors, by the neighbors. Our community has a unique blend of personalities and families, and it’s time we celebrate it. Listen in to learn more about the people you share this little slice of the world with and let’s get to know each other a bit better. I’ll go first. My name is Wendell Sconiers and I’m a former McDonald’s executive turned REALTOR®. I am the youngest of five boys and the son of a Pentecostal preacher and missionary. I am married to the love of my life and have three children who have blessed us with eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Religion and family are supremely important to me, but so too is achievement. I share with you my views on success and several of the successes I have had both in my career and in my communities. My family and I have moved around quite a bit, but are happily settled here in 12 Oaks. After leaving an award-winning career with McDonald’s, I took my passion for people and began helping families find their right-now homes and forever homes. You see, I understand that there are stages in our lives where we must be flexible and transient, and there are times to settle. My goal is to help our community build stronger ties across the board by hearing your stories and allowing others to do the same. I am passionate about our community. I get it. Do you?
