The Positive Aging Community hosted a compelling and interactive discussion with the Purple Heart Foundation, co-hosted by Jim Hatch. The event, now available to watch on YouTube, brought together experts and advocates dedicated to supporting veterans, particularly as they transition into civilian life and explore new career opportunities.Jim Hatch, representing the Purple Heart Foundation, opened the conversation by sharing his personal connection to the military and the foundation's evolving mission. With deep roots in serving wounded veterans, the foundation is now focused on staying relevant to the needs of modern veterans-especially those navigating life after service.A central theme of the discussion was the unique opportunity for veterans in the death care industry. Kenny Johnson, founder of Sunbeam 369, and Mike Henshaw, both passionate advocates for veterans, highlighted how this field can be both meaningful and practical for those transitioning from military service.Pre-Planning and Green Burials: The panel emphasized the importance of pre-planning for end-of-life care, not only for peace of mind but also for financial and emotional well-being. Green burials were spotlighted as an eco-friendly and increasingly popular option.Career Pathways: The death care industry offers stable, rewarding careers for veterans. The skills and discipline gained in the military translate well to this field, which requires compassion, organization, and a strong sense of service.Certification and Training: The Sunbeam 369 Institute is launching a new training program to certify funeral service providers as Veterans Burial Benefits Specialists. This initiative aims to ensure that veterans and their families fully understand and utilize the burial benefits they have earned. The discussion underscored a critical gap: many veterans are unaware of the full range of burial benefits available to them. By educating both veterans and funeral service professionals, organizations like the Purple Heart Foundation and Sunbeam 369 are working to bridge this gap, ensuring that those who have served receive the dignity and support they deserve. As the Positive Aging Community continues to foster dialogue around aging, service, and support, this event stands out as a testament to the power of collaboration. By connecting veterans with meaningful career opportunities and vital resources, these organizations are not only honoring service but also paving the way for brighter, more secure futures.Watch the full discussion: Positive Aging Community with the Purple Heart FoundationFor more information on veteran burial benefits, career training, or to get involved, visit the Purple Heart Foundation and Sunbeam 369 websites.

Revolutionizing men's health wasn't Erica's original plan when she entered nursing. It was a personal journey that began when her husband, a Purple Heart veteran who lost his legs in Afghanistan, was failed by traditional healthcare providers. Their dismissive approach—handing out prescriptions rather than addressing root causes—sparked something in her. "When you have a testosterone level under 200 in your 20s, you're not fine," she recalls telling doctors who insisted everything was normal. That frustration transformed into purpose. After years in critical care and trauma settings, Erica established her own practice near DuPont Circle in Washington DC, specializing in aesthetic wellness, sexual health, and men's enhancement procedures. The treatments she offers might raise eyebrows—"cocktox" injections that prevent penis retraction, girth enhancements, and testosterone therapy—but they address real needs that significantly impact men's quality of life. What sets her practice apart isn't just the specialized treatments. It's the comprehensive approach to men's health that traditional healthcare often overlooks. "Some guys get treated for depression and put on antidepressants when really, if we correct their testosterone, they'd feel better," she explains. By operating outside insurance constraints, she treats patients based on symptoms and wellness goals rather than rigid diagnostic criteria. This approach particularly benefits firefighters, shift workers, and veterans whose healthcare needs often fall through the cracks of conventional medicine.Beyond the clinical aspects, Erica's practice serves as a safe space where men can discuss sensitive concerns without embarrassment. "I promise you that there has not been something said to me that has been surprising," she assures, helping break down taboos that prevent many men from seeking care. Though her social media accounts occasionally attract inappropriate messages, she maintains professional boundaries while using platforms like TikTok to educate and normalize conversations about men's health.Ready to address concerns that traditional healthcare has dismissed? Follow The District Injector on social media or visit the website to learn more about these life-changing treatments and schedule a consultation where your questions will be answered without judgment.

A junior at Swansboro High School in North Carolina, she makes it her mission to welcome new students. Isabella, 17, lives in Hubert, North Carolina, with her mother and stepfather, Amanda and Chris Price. She has four siblings. “Being a military child who is now permanently in Swansboro, I get to not only relate to these new military kids, but help ease their transition into their new environment,” she said. Her parents served a combined 42 years in the Marine Corps. Her mother, a staff sergeant, deployed three times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and humanitarian missions. She retired after 20 years. Her father, Gunnery Sgt. Brian J. Smith, retired from service after 22 years and eight deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He was awarded a Purple Heart after suffering injuries in Afghanistan. He died in 2023 at the beginning of Isabella's sophomore year of high school after being diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic cancer. “My father who was the epitome of hard work and dedication to his career,” she said. “I strive daily to be as committed as he was in everything I aspire to accomplish.” Isabella is on track to earn an associate degree before graduating high school. She's considering several universities in North Carolina for completing a bachelor's degree before going to law school. She aspires to a career in the political field. Ian, Operation Homefront's 2025 Military Child of the Year® for the Coast Guard, has achieved academic success that will help propel him to his goal of becoming a civil engineer, all while mentoring other students. Ian, 17, is a senior at I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he is currently his class valedictorian, the first Black male student to hold the position in a decade. He will graduate with an associate degree from Tidewater Community College a month before his high school graduation. Ian is the son of retired Lt. Michael Lindo and Michelle Effatt. Michael served for 27 years active duty in the Coast Guard, deploying for a total of 10 years conducting counter drug and migrant interdictions in the Caribbean, before retiring in 2019. His father lives in Georgia while Ian and his mom live in Virginia. “My father's dedication and commitment to serving our country for so many years is something I deeply admire,” Ian said. “His loyalty and sacrifice for our nation have shaped who I am. It's not just about the uniform; it's about the values he instilled in me—discipline, resilience, and a strong sense of duty.” “I'm really passionate about designing systems that can improve lives, especially in underserved areas,” Ian said. “I've always believed that infrastructure like roads and bridges plays such a crucial role in connecting people, improving safety, and supporting everyday life.” Ian is currently deciding among several universities, including Virginia Tech and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, to major in civil engineering. Sophia, Operation Homefront's 2025 Military Child of the Year® for the Air Force, has learned to embrace life following the death of her father in 2023 after he served his country for 17 years. Sophia, now 17, was 15 years old when her father, Master Sgt. Anthony Pinero, passed away tragically… She lives at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany with her mom, Sheena Pinero, an executive services specialist and her younger sister. As a military child, Sophia experienced 37 months of her father's deployment and five changes of station. Moving most recently to Germany meant leaving friends and family even farther away than usual, but Sophia responded with resiliency, helping plan trips around Europe with her mom and sister. “Of all of the bases that I have been stationed at, Ramstein Air Base has been the best,” Sophia said. “I have never felt as connected to the people around me as I do here. Whether it is pitching mail at the post office with active-duty personnel or recognizing volunteer excellence in the community, Ramstein Air Base has always felt like one big, connected family.” Sophia is considering pursuing a career in engineering or medicine. She wants to attend the United States Air Force Academy or a university with a strong Air Force ROTC program, and she hopes to become an officer in the Air Force. Interview with Robert "RJ" Thomas retired Navy Seal.Years of Service: 1963-1995This is Episode 100, featuring Navy Seal RJ Thomas, who has been twice nominated for the Medal of Honor and is a recipient of the Navy Cross. On March 23, 1969, United States Navy Seal Robert J “R.J.” Thomas was flying in one of two Seawolf helicopters that were on a scouting mission near Nuy Da Dung Mountain in Vietnam. As the helicopter approached the mountain, they came under heavy weapons fire and were shot down from about 300 feet with no time for the helicopter to autorotate. RJ was hanging out the side door on a gunner belt when several rounds came through the helo, fragmenting and hitting him in the chest. As the helicopter hit the ground, RJ was thrown about 40 feet from the helicopter crash. RJ was stripped of his sidearm, and his Stoner 64A machine gun had been bent, rendering it inoperable. He had compression-fractured vertebrae and multiple impact wounds to his torso, knee, and hand, and his nose was nearly torn from his face. RJ made his way back to the helicopter, which was now on fire. RJ was able to drag the unconscious pilot Dick Barr from his seat and drag him away from the flames. It was around this time that the second helicopter landed and was able to drop door gunner Dan Riordan to assist, and both were able to get gunner Rick Abbott free and away from the helicopter. They were unable to save anyone else as the fire engulfed the helicopter. The enemy began moving toward the survivors to kill or capture them. As RJ observed his surroundings, he realized the only thing he had left to shoot was the pilot's 1911A1 .45 pistol. The pilot had two fully loaded magazines as well as a chest strap with an extra 45-50 rounds. Shielding Barr's body with his own and using Barr's body and helmet as a stable platform, RJ began shooting the oncoming enemy. At some point, Barr regained consciousness and began loading magazines for Thomas as they went empty. One thing in RJ's favor was the fact that in order for the enemy to get to him, they had to come over a dike about 100 yards away. Each time the enemy would stick their heads up over the dike, RJ would shoot them. RJ was able to hold off the enemy for nearly 40 minutes with a handgun. A rescue helicopter was finally able to land, and as RJ gave a final push to load Barr into the helo, his back gave out, and he fell to the ground. It was at this point that an enemy fighter had rushed to the front of the helicopter where there were no weapons. As the fighter raised his rifle to shoot the rescuing helicopter pilots, RJ shot and killed him with his .45. RJ was finally able to make it back into the helicopter and took over the gunner's position and the M60 machine gun. It was in this position that RJ delivered more retribution for his fallen comrades before the helicopter flew to safety. It should be noted that as the rescue chopper came in and landed, its crew noticed many dead enemy soldiers lying on the ground. Their distances from the downed helo were from 3 to about 150 yards, all shot by RJ with his M1911 .45 ACP.For his incredible courage under fire, the Army nominated RJ Thomas twice for the Medal of Honor but both times the nominations were denied. The Navy declined because RJ was an enlisted man and believed the first Medal of Honor should have been awarded to an officer. Thomas was instead awarded the second highest Navy medal, the Navy Cross, after acknowledging that Thomas had only killed one enemy soldier who had charged the helicopter. In addition to the Navy Cross, RJ was also awarded the Bronze Star, Combat V, Purple Heart, and Cross for Gallantry.RJ Thomas retired in 1995 as a Commander. He won numerous firearms matches in the military and as a civilian. He qualified as a Distinguished Marksman with the handgun and rifle and for years was acknowledged as the best shooter in the Navy. Thomas is known for instituting the Naval Special Warfare Sniper program, and the people who worked for him say he was one of the best leaders they ever worked for.

This week our host Brandi Starr is joined by Michael Allison, CEO of the Adversity Academy Leadership Development Company. Meet Michael Allison, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, Purple Heart recipient, and leadership expert with over 20 years of experience transforming lives and organizations. As a globally recognized keynote speaker, Michael has delivered transformative presentations to Fortune 500 companies like Microsoft, NBC, and the University of Columbia, emphasizing leadership, resilience, and corporate culture. In this episode of Revenue Rehab, Brandi and Michael delve into the leadership crisis facing organizations today, exploring how outdated models result in disengagement, high turnover, and a lack of resilience. They'll share insights on empowering employees at every level, tying effective leadership to revenue growth, and strategies for fostering a culture of accountability and transformation. Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers: Topic #1 The Unleadership Concept: Empowering Every Level [17:33] Michael Allison introduces the concept of "unleadership," highlighting that anyone with courage and willpower can assume leadership roles. He shares, "We realized that a lot of people have this mindset of thinking that I do not have a leadership role." By encouraging a culture where every employee feels empowered, Allison underscores the importance of involving all team members in innovative processes, regardless of their position. Topic #2 Silent Killers in Leadership and Their Impact on Revenue [10:48] Allison identifies the silent killers of leadership within organizations, such as dismissing employee contributions and fostering a culture of fear. He states, "Whenever you actually shut down an employee or shut down a staff member...these are some of the silent killers." He emphasizes the importance of listening to employees and leveraging their ideas to enhance operational efficiency and revenue generation, as exemplified by his work with the railroad industry. Topic #3 Complacency Kills: Driving Organizational Success with Resilient Leadership [20:38] Michael Allison stresses the crucial lesson of "complacency kills" learned in the military, which translates to the business world as a need for constant vigilance and adaptability. He explains, "Leadership does not stay there. Which is why I talk about you do not want to get complacent." Allison highlights that empowering teams to avoid complacency is integral in ensuring ongoing growth and success in organizations. What's One Thing You Can Do Today Michael's ‘One Thing' for the audience is to critically assess your current leadership model and practices. Begin by asking yourself if your approach genuinely inspires resilience, or if it's driven by outdated models and fear-based strategies. He recommends investing in leadership transformation by moving beyond mere management tactics to true leadership development. Additionally, make resilience a core part of your business strategy, equipping your team with the necessary mindset, tools, and skills to propel forward. Adopting these steps will empower you to make significant improvements within your team and organization. Buzzword Banishment Buzzword Banishment: Michael's Buzzword to Banish is ‘content is king'. A Missouri woman who survived a harrowing kidnapping and shooting by hiding under her friend's lifeless body has now testified against one of her attackers. Melissa Pugh, who narrowly escaped death in the August 2020 incident, took the stand in the trial of Steven Chase Calverley, one of nine individuals charged in the kidnapping and murder of her friend, Sarah Pasco. According to the Springfield Daily Citizen, Calverley, 33, was convicted of second-degree murder and other charges related to the brutal crime. The kidnapping, orchestrated by ringleader Gary Hunter Jr., led to the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Pasco and left Pugh fighting for her life. After being forced into a well in the woods of Lawrence County, Missouri, Pugh made the critical decision to lay still beneath her friend's body, hoping to survive while the attackers believed both women were dead. Hunter Jr., who pleaded guilty in 2022 to second-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping charges, was sentenced to 40 years in prison. He had originally faced a possible death sentence but took a plea deal to avoid it. Authorities arrested all nine individuals involved in the kidnapping after a week-long investigation. Pugh, who courageously testified against Calverley in court, spoke of her forgiveness for his role in the crime, though she expressed confusion over why he, a former Purple Heart-winning U.S. Marine, did not intervene to stop Hunter Jr. during the ordeal. "I know God spared my life for a reason," Pugh said, according to the Daily Citizen. "But I don't understand why none of them tried to help us... Especially with Mr. Calverley being a war hero." The terrifying sequence of events began when Hunter Jr. approached Pugh and Pasco while they were in a parked car in Stotts City. After forcing them into a life-threatening situation, he directed the women to the home of Christina Knapp, one of his accomplices. Over time, the plot involved all nine suspects, who eventually drove the women to a secluded wooded area in Miller, Missouri. There, Hunter Jr. shot Pasco while Pugh lay hidden beneath her, convinced she was going to die. After the group left, Pugh, covered in her friend's blood, crawled out of the well and managed to call 911, leading to the swift arrest of the perpetrators. In the aftermath of his conviction, Calverley expressed remorse in a letter, telling the victims' families, “I'm sorry I was a coward and didn't try harder to stop him. I'm sorry I didn't try to put myself between him and you guys.” Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
