Have you tried opening up Facebook and noticed someone's amazing vacation, or the new car or house they've bought, or the wonderful celebration with their loved ones, and just felt worse about yourself? If yes, then you're slipping into comparison, something we all do. All these unfiltered comparisons only lead to insecurity, fear, self-doubt, and negative beliefs. The moment we compare ourselves to others, especially the things we see on social media, we steal from the joy that's always available to us. As Theodore Roosevelt said, comparison is the thief of joy. Today, I'll give tips and advice to help you get unstuck from the comparison trap. Episode Quotes "Perfection is an illusion." Every time we do something we don't want to do, we are working against our own interests, forcing our drive to come from outside pressure and not from within. In the long run, trying to force ourselves to do something can work, but you don't enjoy the process and often end up burnt out. Transformation happens when we shift from ‘what we should do' to ‘what we want to do'. Accessing our inner voice allows us to hear what our body and soul wants. Listening to this little voice empowers us to do things that we truly believe in. It's a place of fulfillment, joy, and productivity led by inspired actions. Today, I talk about accessing inspiration, tapping into your inner voice, and finding your inner cheerleader, especially in those moments where you feel like giving up. Episode Quotes "Don't force yourself to do something that you don't want to do." "Your inner voice is a safe, loving, and comforting guidance." During pregnancy, bodily changes are inevitable. It's a natural part of pregnancy but seeing your body change can be uncomfortable. Insecurities, negative food relationships, and anxiety may arise because of the societal emphasis on sexiness and beauty. It's the main reason why some pregnant women struggle maintaining a positive body image. However, it's important to understand that body image is not about your physical appearance but how you feel and love your body through its change. Today I share the changes that have happened in my body, my relationship with food, and how I learn to love and appreciate my body through pregnancy. Episode Quotes "Learn to love your pregnant body because it's an amazing vessel of life." "Pregnancy heals past insecurities and wounds around food and body image." Reflecting on things that have happened in the past helps us prepare and think about what we want. It's a powerful tool for us to remind ourselves of who we are, what we've done, and the lessons we've learned. Also, you don't need to just do this at the end of the year. It's important to do a check in with yourself and reflect on each month or whatever seasons of your life you're in. Today, I share with you my moments of reflection from travel, depression, pregnancy, joy and trust, and the lessons I've learned along the way. Episode Quotes "Lean on trust and lean on your support systems." "Learn to surrender to where you are." "Don't lose the faith. Keep trusting." It is normal to compare yourself to others and perhaps feel jealous of them. Comparisons can be beneficial at times. They can serve as a guide for progress and act as an inspiration. But when you become fixated on your flaws rather than your strengths, sitting in self-pity rather than appreciating where you are, then you are focused on the wrong thing. Understand that wherever you are right now, that's where you're supposed to be… And you have the power to always change that. Stop comparing yourself to others and to past versions of yourself, unless it's inspiring you, otherwise it is a struggle you'll never win. In this episode, I delve into appreciation vs. self-pity, why comparison is a losing battle, and the power of self-awareness. Episode Quotes "Appreciate where you are and how blessed you are rather than sitting in comparison and self-pity" "Fighting against your past is always a losing battle." Hey everybody! This week I'm sharing a recording of an inner child meditation. Inner child work is an approach to recognizing and healing childhood trauma. It recognizes that our behaviors as an adult stem from our childhood experiences. Inner child work focuses on addressing our unmet needs by reparenting ourselves. I guide my clients through many different meditations and visualizations to help them connect with their inner child to gain healing and deeper love for themselves. This is just one example of an inner child session I had with my clients. I hope you enjoy! We all have goals for ourselves and we want to pursue our dreams with great aspirations…but do we actually do that? Setting objectives is just the first stage; achieving them requires action. Consistency is the biggest problem that people struggle with when it comes to achieving goals. It's a big factor why a lot of us tend to ‘jump ship' or change course from what we want. In this episode, I discuss the importance of consistency, knowing when to change course, how to set clear goals and how to overcome confusion. Episode Quotes "Amazing results come from being consistent. It's about moving towards that goal every single day." "It's okay to change course especially when it's no longer serving your end goal." Holding onto things that we can't change just leads to stress and negative emotions. It's a lost struggle. For us to experience freedom and peace, the key is to focus inwardly, because at the end of the day, the only thing we have control over is how we think and feel. What you focus on matters. A lot. You are a powerful co- creator. You are literally creating your own reality, the life you have, the results you get in your relationships, finances, health, and everything else. How empowering is that?!? Or did it freak you out, you do you feel an urge to deny it? Maybe it's easier to blame other people and things for how your life is going… I want you to think about these areas of your life: finances, career, health, goals and relationships (including the one with yourself) and anything else that matters to you… Are you thinking positively or negatively? Whatever your current circumstance may be, by continuously focusing on it, you have made it the reality that it is. Whether you believe it or not, everything in the universe is governed by powerful laws. One of those is the Law of Attraction which in simpler terms means ‘like attracts like'. The more focus you set on your goal, the more energy is built, which literally affects your results. In this episode, I'll explain how the concept of ‘Where Focus Goes Energy Flows' can transform your life. Few spots left for our Women's Retreat. Book yours now! We all have things about ourselves that we wish were different and oftentimes we don't allow those parts of ourselves to be seen and heard. When we suppress the emotions and thoughts around these parts of us, it creates shame, confusion and a sense of loneliness. We all have experiences, thoughts and feelings that we wish were different or never happened, but the fact is the human experience includes all sorts of positive and negative and everything in between… and all those parts need to be acknowledged. Essentially, we need to Stop holding that shit in. We need to see it first ourselves and allow it to be there and then step into vulnerability and share with someone you trust and feel safe with… In this episode, I explain the importance of being heard not just by others but also by you and how freeing it is when you see yourself, all parts of yourself, and let those parts be seen too by others. I want to share my big takeaways from reading the book, Atomic Habits by James Clear. What you consistently do eventually shapes who you are, what you think, and how you present yourself to others. In short, your HABITS shape who you are and your understanding of your identity. And even more interestingly, your identity beliefs (which often sit in our subconscious) shape our behaviors, our habits… This gets tricky, but I dive more into it in this episode. Depending on whether you consider your habits good habits or bad habits, they affect every aspect of your life. They will either lead you to success or jeopardize your goals – finances, health, relationships, etc. But before you can build healthy habits, it's vital to understand what habits are, how they're formed, and identify those that you want to change. Today, I'll share with you my key take-aways from the book Atomic Habits on how you can build good habits that last. Few spots left for our Women's Retreat. Book yours now! The way you think about yourself affects your reality. Oftentimes, your limiting thoughts and beliefs stop you from going after what you want. You make it even more difficult by keeping these stories. And instead of looking from within, you tend to look for other things to blame – time, money, relationships, and responsibilities. The good news is that you can alter your way of thinking. You have the power to change your perspective and your life. We often link happiness with the circumstances we find ourselves in. In fact, we have this notion that we need to always be happy. Unfortunately, that's not really how life works. It's full of ups and downs, big and little things. One day you may be feeling positive, the next day you're full of fears. We all feel them simply because it's a natural part of being human. Our thoughts affect how we feel and act since our thoughts are connected to our emotions and behaviors. And so, even if we all occasionally have negative thoughts (which is really normal), it's crucial to know how to manage them in order to prevent them from destroying our mental health. We need to recognize these thoughts lovingly without judgment and without criticism, and then change them into more useful thoughts. The process of changing negative thinking requires time. Practicing my 4 Step Process will improve your ability to choose more empowering and loving ways of thinking. It will also show you the lesson or gift in difficult circumstances in your life. Today, I'm going to walk you through this 4 step process to help you lovingly recognize and reframe negative thinking. Just a little catching up, so I'm back in Holland. We just got back from Peru. My husband and I spent six weeks travelling Peru. We saw a lot, experienced a lot, and met really interesting people. It was a really unique and amazing trip. As we traveled back, had some bad jet lag, I realized even more the importance of a good night's rest. In my lack of sleep, I'm struggling through fatigue trying to solve and figure things out about every area of my life… bad idea! Not a time to try to solve when you're physically and emotionally tired. But instead of finding a solution, the outcome was more negativity, exhaustion, and stress. Today's episode is a reminder for everyone of how important rest and sleep is for your emotional health and how sleeping on it could help solve problems. Hey everybody! We've got Brittany on the podcast today. She is one of my clients that went through my Soulfully Abundant Group Program and Couples Coaching with her husband. We cover a lot about Brittany's journey working with me, from feeling stuck to feeling in control, empowered and bettering her relationships. She has been married for 13 years, and we worked through and healed a lot of the resentment that was building with in-laws that also crept into her marriage…and this didn't help her anxiety improve either, which we will chat about how that has changed too. In this episode, Brittany shares her experience and breakthroughs in working with me. We talk about healing from resentment, getting unstuck, processing emotions, and improving anxiety. Episode Quotes "It's okay to feel the emotions but don't hold on to them and build those negative stories." "Tears are powerful when you're connected to your body and not the negative stories." A lot of us believe that surrendering means losing – that it's about giving up to the challenges of life. It's the reason why people keep on fighting albeit being drowned in stress. Nobody wants to raise the white flag. But what if surrendering actually means trusting the seasons of life? That it's not giving up. It simply means letting go of the need to control the outcomes, stopping the fight, the worry and fear. Surrender equals trust, which leads to a life that is truly meaningful and purposeful. In this episode, I talk about surrendering, leaning into vulnerability, and trusting the seasons of your life. Episode Quotes "Everything is a learning opportunity." Defensiveness is a behavior that can manifest in a variety of situations. It could be reacting to feedback at work or justifying criticisms from people close to you. We become defensive when a sensitive issue is brought up that leads to shame or we feel attacked. Although protective actions might make you feel better in the short term, they usually make you feel worse in the long run. The foundation of defensiveness is the belief that we must always be correct – that strength and feeling good enough equates to winning difficult conversations. It's time to shift our mindsets. We can be open and receptive without being defensive. Today, I share what is defensiveness, why people become defensive, and ways to become less defensive so you can build lasting relationships. Episode Quotes "A relationship that is full of defensiveness is a shitty relationship." "Defensiveness in a relationship means there's not good communication." "Pause, breathe, and think before you respond." "Do not listen to respond. Listen to understand." "Defensiveness comes from you believing that you are being attacked." Some of us believe that we must first overcome all our fears before moving forward. We keep holding back until we think it is safe enough to face our doubts. However, as we keep on waiting our fears get stronger and stronger, leaving us paralyzed in striving for what we truly want in life. Fear is a very NORMAL human emotion and one that we cannot fully escape. Recognize your fears and doubts… But don't let them overcome you. Believe in yourself – you are capable, you are worthy, you are loved. In this episode, I dig into the paralyzing power of fear and shame, how to move through it and build self-belief. The path to success is never a straight line. You will encounter many challenges and roadblocks. And every time our dreams seem to elude us, we usually blame something outside of us: our finances, lack of time, relationships, our past… But what if none of these external factors are to blame? What if it's YOU? Blame renders us powerless. Self- Responsibility leads to empowerment. When we feel empowered, we reach our goals. It might be that your limiting belief is what's holding you back from moving forward towards your goals. Simply because your beliefs create your results. To break it down even more… It starts with your thoughts, and your thoughts determine the way you feel and your feelings drive your actions in reaching your goals and dreams...or not. Remember, you are the creator of your reality. It's up to you and your beliefs. Figure out what you're thinking that's stopping you from believing in all the many things that are possible for you, and from there do this powerful work to change them. In this episode, I go through the process of uncovering limiting beliefs, the power of visualization, and how believing in possibilities will change your life. Episode Quotes "You need to believe that you are a powerful co-creator." "We grow through difficult times." "Counter your limiting beliefs with believable and more positive thoughts." As emotional beings, it's natural for us to desire human connections. LOVE is probably the most powerful emotion that we desire. And relationships operate best when each other's needs are satisfied in a balanced manner…but we must remember it's never the responsibility of another to meet our needs, that's our job. However, it is a beautiful thing when two people can come together and express themselves and CHOOSE to be a support of one another rather than trying to force or control support or connection… When the latter occurs, you may find yourself in a codependent relationship. Although it may be tough to navigate relationships since there are various types in our lives… The ability to build a strong, loving, and healthy relationship can be learned and developed. In this episode, I talk about the dangers of victimhood, how to break free from codependency and how vulnerability and empathy can strengthen your relationships. Episode Quotes "It's beautiful to come together from a place of security in ourselves and enjoy each other." "Fear generates victimhood, anger, blame, and insecurity." "Forgiveness sets you free." Sometimes what stops us from moving forward is because we are indulging in our emotions rather than processing them. This could be sadness, doubt, unworthiness, apathy, overwhelm, anxiety, etc. What happens most of the time is we get lost in the emotions and the stories that create the emotions. We keep on replaying the same story in our head, indulging in it and therefore intensifying the way we are feeling. The end result, we remain STUCK. It's also common that we react to our emotions and do or say things that don't serve us or our relationships, which results in more negative emotions. And so it's really important to recognize whether you are processing heavy emotions in a healthy way or if you're indulging in them. In this episode, we'll delve into the difference between indulging and healthily feeling emotions, understanding and managing difficult emotions, how to disconnect from the story and instead healthily process emotions so you can move forward in a positive way. Episode Quotes "Lean back into trust and don't beat yourself up." "Emotions are vibrations in our body." "You have to allow yourself to feel the emotions to process them." "Disconnect from the story and just allow yourself to feel the emotions." As humans, we often attach our happiness to things, situations, and people. What we don't realize is that these things aren't everlasting, and that at any moment there is this possibility of losing them. That's why most of us end up in pain when something happens like a relationship ending, losing a job, or even when your valuable items are stolen. I know it's not easy to let go of attachment. It's a continuous battle within us. However, our attachment to anything, no matter how valuable it is, is not worth our emotional well-being. LETTING GO is the key to a more fulfilling life. Today, I want to talk to you about non-attachment and its importance, benefits of practicing non-attachment, different types of attachment, and the practice of letting go so you can start living a happier life. Episode Quotes "Our attachment to anything, no matter how expensive it is, is not worth our emotional well-being." "Practicing non-attachment gets you closer to a more fulfilling and happier life." If you're constantly replaying past moments through the lens of self-loathing, or imagining a play-by-play fight while you shower with all the things you should have said (we've all done it), you're really only hurting yourself. It's so easy to resist change and to take our partner for granted. Don't ask me why, but it is. So how do we fight both of these very real human qualities that can have dire consequences on the health of our relationships? Well, accepting that to love is to evolve while also understanding having gratitude for the way things are now is key. Easier said than done right? That's why in the latest episode I take a deeper dive into: What it means to grow with your partner How to appreciate the now How to embrace lifelong learning in your relationship It's not always easy, but once you stop fighting the inevitable changes you and your partner will experience, and learn to lean into them as new ways to relate to each other, that's when the magic begins to happen. Finding new ways to shower them with love, while compassionately acknowledging that there may be new ways we need to be loved are key in maintaining a vibrant partnership. Again, this is a tall order, but it's so worth it in the end. If you spoke to someone else the way you speak to yourself, would they cry? If so, this one's for you- you gotta learn to stop that. You're worthy of love, especially from YOU. It can be really hard not to go over past mistakes with a fine-tooth comb, mining for every goring detail of how terrible we are- I don't know why it's so easy, but it is. We've all got some bullies inside of us, and if we don't learn to stand up to them, they can ruin our lives. That's why in this episode I go more into: What your inner critic is How to shut them up Ultimately, only you can decide how you talk to yourself. It's a choice you'll have to consciously make over and over till it becomes a habit. And this is also not me telling you to blow smoke up your butt- if something in your past or present feels cringy, or you're dreading something in your future, you probably need to examine that. But you DON'T have to all-out loathe yourself while you do it. How do you define yourself? Specifically, how do you define yourself when you fail (or feel like you've failed)? I know that it can feel disappointing when we don't get what we want or (think) we need. But what if, instead of getting down on yourself, or letting it keep you from getting up and trying again, what if you instead admired the parts of your attempt that worked? Better still, what if you appreciated the fact that you were brave enough to try at all, and tried to learn something from it? This concept is what I like to call “failing forward” and though it may seem like a small shift, this reframe is seriously powerful. On this episode of the Soulfully Confident Podcast, we'll be talking about how: To learn and grow from failure Ways to silence your harsh inner critic It's not always easy, but if you can step out of your shame spiral and remember that you're not failing as long as you're growing, you'll become a braver and better version of yourself. You'll get a broader perspective on your life and relationships with people by taking your ego out of it and remembering there is no such thing as perfection, only those who try and try again. All anger really is, is a lack of control. It's a secondary emotion in response to feeling anxious or unable to control events happening around you. And for a lot of us, it's safer or easier than acknowledging that something is happening that we don't like. It's also anger that tips us into the victim mindset. Once we're already angry, that's the lens we use to view things around us. Recognizing our harmful tendencies and working on them is the ultimate way to overhaul a feeling of powerlessness. In this episode we'll talk more about: Denial vs processing your emotions in a healthy way Ways to express feelings responsibly Living in a dream world isn't the answer here, but neither is curling up into a ball of angst just because you're having a bad day. We have to learn to strike that balance between acknowledging and processing our feelings without becoming a slave to them. Let's talk about ways to figure out how. There is such power if you're able to tap into the feminine energy that lives in all of us regardless of gender. It can help you connect with yourself and allow you to embrace your nurturing side for your benefit (and others if you're feeling generous). So often we don't even remember to gauge how and what we're feeling from moment to moment. Quite the opposite actually, if anything we try to avoid our feelings. This is where you'll find yourself running to some favorite pastimes like all-day Netflix binges, your classic “going for 1 drink” turned into 10, endless social media scrolls, you get the idea. In this episode, we'll talk more about: Why we avoid emotions in the first place How this hinders growth How to stop As much as it can hurt sometimes, or just feel really annoying, the only way to process our emotions and learn from them is to acknowledge them. And then we have to listen to what they are trying to tell us. It's not always easy, but I promise if you learn to run toward and not away from your feelings, it's so so worth it. People love to tell you the only constant in life is change. While this is fundamentally true, in my experience, it doesn't mean it's easy. Change can be thrilling, but it can also be frightening; running headfirst into the unknown is unsettling. We can't see what's about to happen, and the unknown can be cruel as well as kind, and the only deciding factor is fate. Yikes, didn't mean for this to get so real, especially because even when faced with the unknown we should strive to be hopeful! That's why in this episode I go more into: Ways to reflect on the chapter you're ending How to look forward to the future with positivity, not fear Never forget YOU are in charge of your story, and if you can stay positive and open to possibility while also accepting the universe will take you where you're meant to be, you'll do just fine. Are you a constant seeker? Maybe if you just try this, or go here, or hit this goal, you'll finally reach contentment. Maybe… Maybe not. Sorry but you have to seek contentment within yourself; I promise you it's there. In this episode we do a deep dive into that very topic and chat about: How feeling fulfilled in yourself enables you to be happy everywhere Simple practices you can do to become more grateful One of the best things you can do for yourself is to develop a gratitude mindset. This will allow you to always carry a calm and positive attitude no matter where you might be. It'll help you feel fulfilled from within instead of seeking fulfillment through outside sources (that so often leave us wanting). A great place to start is by practicing gratitude before bedtime. A shift in attitude AND something to guarantee a great night's sleep? Sign. Me. Up. It's not always easy, and sometimes negative thoughts creep back in, but practice makes perfect. If you look for gratitude in the simple things and choices you make every day, you'll find that true contentment is found in a calmer and more centered you. Just because he forgets to put the toilet seat down in no way means your relationship is doomed. So you gotta stop deciding it is because some Instagram influencer told you her boyfriend gets her spontaneous flowers and massages. (Who knows, maybe he also forgets to put the toilet seat down). The point is, comparison is a dangerous thing, and all it will do is make you unnecessarily play the victim and go looking for trouble in your relationship. In this episode, I go further into: Why we have the desire to compare our relationships What that comparison actually means Ways to combat the urge and step into loving self-improvement We don't have to be a slave to our thoughts, but we do have to try and figure out what they're trying to tell us. Effective communication both internally and with your partner will go a long way in preserving your bond, and making you less likely to compare your relationship to friends or what you're seeing on social media. Remember that no one is perfect, no relationship is perfect, but if you give each other the benefit of the doubt and work through root issues together, you'll be perfect for each other. Depression alert! Have you ever had a sadness spell sneak up on you seemingly out of nowhere? One minute you're fine and the next you're all doom and gloom and feel like you'll never be happy again? Here's the thing though, there's usually a reason or reasons for your sudden weariness. And figuring those reasons out is an important part of how you eventually shut them down. In this episode we talk more about: Why bouts of depression pop up How to deal with them when they do Contrary to popular belief, negative thoughts and feelings are normal. They happen. The difference between curling up with them in a big sadness afghan and moving on depends upon what you decide to believe about yourself. You have so much more power than you think you do; you are loved and capable and you will get through this and be happy again. I promise. Do you ever feel like you're so far from where you want to be in life? I think sometimes we all do, but that's ok! In fact, it's a good thing. It means that you are self-aware and want to do the work to become a better version of yourself. That, friends, is half the battle. So many people wander through life on autopilot and hardly think about how all their actions and accomplishments accumulate to make them who they are. Once we're aware of this, the work can begin. In this episode, I'll talk more about: The journey of becoming a more honest, loving human Balancing this with still advocating for your needs I'm not saying I do it perfectly every time, but I'm always trying. That's the point. Because that's all that any of us can do. Try to be better. And when we fail (because we will) we have to get up and try again. Whether you're trying to be healthier overall, or just more patient and kind, remember that practice makes perfect. And so we all have to be willing to practice every day. Because at the end of the day it's a choice. We choose who we want to be. So we can always choose to be better. If you enjoyed this episode, please take a few seconds to leave a rating and review.
