Life With Executive Function Skills - 085

So many of us grew up without the opportunity to become the person we want to be.  Whether our homes were filled with trauma or addictions or those who raised us were just missing the essential executive function skills to be able to pass them on to us, we didn’t get them.  And so, it goes.  Generation after generation of kids are growing up with under-developed executive function skills; the very life skills that are necessary for successful “adulting.” Some of you believe it’s too late for you to develop these skills or that it will take too long.  The fact is, it’s never too late and in our 7-month journey together you will make significant changes – from the inside out - that will change your life.  To me, that’s a relatively short period of time considering the lifetime many of us have spent without these skills and the difference that having them makes. Developing your Executive Function Skills and shifting your limiting beliefs is the fastest and most effective way to overcome ADHD limitations, find focus, gain confidence, and a newfound freedom in your life! My mission is to put an end to the worldwide needless suffering of adults with ADHD and those with under-developed Executive Function Skills - whether from ADHD, chronic depression or anxiety, trauma, addictions or chronic illnesses.  And, you don't need a formal diagnosis to know you need help developing these executive function skills in order to greatly reduce your suffering. Episode Resources: Enrollment for the final 2021 group for ADDventures in Achievement Foundational Skills program closes on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 10 pm PDT.   If you think this could be your time to make the changes you’ve wanted for years and you’re just wondering about the contents of the program, the time commitment and the financial investment, I highly recommend you at least take a look at the information on the enrollment page to fully understand what this opportunity holds for you, in the event you decide to embrace it before the deadline: https://www.drbarbaracohen.com/aia-may-enrollment   13 EF Skills:  https://www.drbarbaracohen.com/Executive-Function Getting Unstuck: https://www.drbarbaracohen.com/procrastination-opt-in  Join the amazing Living Beyond ADHD Facebook Group & hangout with your peeps Follow me on Dr B Facebook Page and enjoy live videos and more Download the mp3 audio file and listen whenever you like. Better is not something you wish, it’s something you become.”    What this quote says to me is to be mindful of who you are becoming on the way to where it is that you are going.  And to take stock every night to make sure that you are better tonight than you were last night.  I suggest you make this a nightly practice for yourself. There's a lot of trauma that occurs as a result of not knowing what the source of our challenges are. And then so many mixed feelings when and if we get diagnosed, everything from a huge sense of relief, and having an explanation for entire life experiences, to a deep sadness over the missed opportunities. And we're left wondering what could have happened if we had known sooner?  What if the bigger issue with all the problems that we adults with or without ADHD have is because of the not knowing - the lack of a diagnosis and all the trauma that results from living with the unknown, or the unnamed explanation? Developing your Executive Function Skills and shifting your limiting beliefs is the fastest and most effective way to overcome ADHD limitations, find focus, gain confidence, and a newfound freedom in your life! Do You Forgive Yourself Or Others - 083

Living Beyond ADHD

Forgiveness is a gift.  We can give this gift at any time - to ourselves or to others.  It’s our “get out of jail” gift card – releasing each of us from a prison of our own making.  When we refuse to forgive, and choose to hold onto mistakes and use them against ourselves or others, we are setting ourselves up for a miserable life.  How many times do we need to relive the pain of the past before we’ve experienced enough pain or misery? To forgive is to stop feeling angry or resentful toward ourselves or to others for a mistake or harm caused.  To forgive doesn’t mean I forget or condone; it simply means that I stop poisoning myself with my past mistakes or the harms done to me by others.  And, as I said in the previous episode, “for things to change, you have to change.”  I had to learn how to forgive, let go and move on.  You also have to learn how to forgive, let go and move on.  If not, you could stay stuck forever. In this episode Dr B talks about: What is the point in forgiving myself, the damage is already done? What’s the point in apologizing to others for the mistakes I’ve made in the past; they continue to bring up my past mistakes and punish me with them. Forgiving myself or others is like me saying that what happened was okay, and it’s not okay. Jim Rohn said - "For things to change, you have to change." It seems very obvious when you think about it, for things to change, you have to change. I've been thinking about this quote a lot lately. And it's taken on a much deeper meaning for me, because he didn't say, for things to change, you have to change things. What he said is for things to change, you have to change. I understand now that means that I have to change in whatever ways are necessary for things to change for me, whatever those things are; and if I don't change, which is an inside job, then things in the outside world are not going to change for me. So, for things to change, you have to change. Feeling overwhelmed isn’t automatically a positive or a negative experience; it depends on the emotion and on the meaning you give to the emotion you’re feeling.  You could be overwhelmed with gratitude and self-love or overwhelmed with grief and shame. The meaning I give overwhelmed is that it implies “too much” or “more than someone can comfortably handle.”  Is that you? Every time I imagine what life is like WITHOUT well-developed executive function skills before the pandemic, and then imagine it during this pandemic, the impact just 10x’d itself in terms of the negative overwhelm and impact that it is having on your lives.  And so many of you are telling me exactly that. Hey ADDers!  We’re going to start off a little different today and look at a correlation I’ve been thinking about for some time. The title of today’s episode comes from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, and pertains to more than just those in recovery from alcoholism.  And even if you don’t favor AA for whatever reasons, please do listen for the deeper logic and meanings that I want to share with you today in this introductory part of today’s episode. A seemingly hopeless state of mind and body is reaching epidemic proportions as it relates to depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic illness, ADHD and addictions (both behavioral and substance).  And underlying these conditions, I am seeing the compromised development of executive function skills and strategies, which are the essential skills we all need to thrive as adults in today’s world. If you can’t plan, organize, prioritize, get started and keep going until the end, or regulate states of overwhelm and analysis paralysis so you can make a solid decision, it’s going to cost you. Hey ADDers! Do you have trouble “shifting” from your current task to the next task? Or maybe you have the opposite problem – where you are shifting way too quickly from thing to thing and leaving a trail of unfinished tasks in your wake. Even though most of the executive function assessments typically look at the behavioral stuff, like moving with ease from one situation, activity or aspect of a problem to another as the circumstances require, to me there is so much more to understanding Shifting than just the behavioral manifestations. What about Shifting your thoughts and feelings? By that I mean, do your thoughts and feelings seem to get stuck and just keep presenting you with the same stuff over and over again? Do you want to think or feel differently yet can’t seem to shift? Hey ADDers! Do you ever wonder about the heritability of ADHD or how your emotions and feelings impact your executive functioning? In fact, do you know the difference between your emotions and your feelings? If yes and no, this episode is for you!! According to Pema Chodron, an American Tibetan Buddhist and ordained nun, if you allow an emotion to exist for 90 seconds without judging it, it will disappear. According to Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroanatomist and author of A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey, “once triggered, the chemical released by your brain surges through your body and you have a physiological experience. Within 90 seconds from the initial trigger, the chemical component of anger has completely dissipated from your blood and your automatic response is over. If, however, you remain angry after those 90 seconds have passed, then it is because you have chosen to let that circuit continue to run.” In this episode, I talk about: The Heritability of ADHD The 90-Second Rule Executive Functioning Emotions Feelings The importance of celebrating your WINS To Help The Show: If you like what I'm doing here on the show, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts and share with your community via social media Ratings and reviews are extremely helpful and greatly appreciated.  They help other people find the show, who need this information If you just share with one person and every listener does that, so many more people in need with learn about this show and benefit from the content Help me in my mission to make sure that all adults with focus, follow through, self-management or executive function challenges have some resources to help them live a happier and more productive life Subscribe on iTunes Episode Resources: Download the Transcript and read through the whole episode, from start to finish. Hey ADDers! I’m so glad you could join me today because I’m celebrating. I have four special things to share with you as we move along in this episode. First, I have a gift for you. I am gifting you my mini course, The Magical Power of WINS, in the hopes that you will come to a better understanding of the power of WINS through the content in that course. Plus, I’d love to read your comments in the course itself, under each of the videos, as to what you learned and how you will be applying the information. You will find the link in the PDF transcript as well as in the episode description. I hope you will take action and claim your gift of the Magical Power of WINS. It will be available as a free gift until my next Ask Dr B episode releases on Thursday, 10/19/17.   Second, I am seriously considering re-branding the name of my show because I don’t feel like I am talking about you harnessing your ADHD power, rather I am talking about topics that are beyond your ADHD, such as executive function skills, self-sabotaging behaviors, and how change can actually happen for you. So, the new name I am considering for my show is “Beyond Your ADHD with Dr B.” I’d love to know your thoughts on the idea of my re-branding my show and the name I am considering, for the reasons I am considering it. Click HERE to make your thoughts known to me.   Third, I decided to make some changes to the enrollment process for my innovative program, ADDventures in Achievement. I’ve re-purposed the Waitlist, so that as soon as you get yourself on the Waitlist, I’ll be reaching out to you to find out what your current challenges are and what your goals are, so we can determine if this program is right for you. And if it is, I will offer you the opportunity to enroll in the program right now, at the current pricing, instead of waiting until the public re-launch of this program near the end of this year, which will include a price increase due to the new content about executive function and EF skills that is formally being added to the program. All the current Workshops and Coaching Calls have these EF skills woven into them so current members don’t have to wait to benefit from these life-changing skills.   So, two benefits to enrolling now is that 1) you don’t have to wait to start learning the EF skills you are missing and can start improving the quality of your life, 2) you can freeze your membership costs at the lowest they will be. This program is definitely the place to be if you want help understanding what’s been holding you back and want to learn the skills to break free of your stuckness and start living the life you’ve only wished for.  Click HERE to get on the Waitlist and have me contact you right away! In the words of a current student of mine: “Tuesday was World Mental Health Day and October is Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia and ADHD Awareness Month. Couldn’t help but take a moment to reflect back to a year ago at this time, when I first started this journey. Crazy to me to review what I had written in the intro I posted here – never could I have imagined what the following months would bring… Truly grateful for the opportunity to finally learn and understand the reasons behind the challenges I’ve experienced throughout my life. Prior to last year, I never would have thought to attribute these challenges to ADHD/EFD. I feel like I’m finally coming into consciousness and into my own with all that we’ve been learning here.” In my own words: “It’s a safe space to face yourself and your current challenges and limitations, and tell the truth about what you really want to be doing in your life. That way, I can help you to learn the skills you are missing so you can do whatever it is that makes your heart sing and become the person who can have that life.” Fourth, there’s one more special thing I want to share with you and that’s connected with it being ADHD Awareness Month. I’m excited that this year’s International Conference on ADHD is being co-hosted by ADDA and CHADD, for the first time in history. Instead of having to decide between attending the ADDA or CHADD conference, that decision has been removed. You can attend this one conference and benefit from what both organizations have been providing to the ADHD communities for years. So, if you are in the Atlanta GA area or able to get there, the conference is going to be held from November 9-12, and will bring together some of the top clinicians, educators and resources all in one place for you. Hey ADDers! So glad you could join me for today’s podcast episode. In the last episode, I talked about how we are a “feeling driven people” and if we don’t feel like it, we don’t do it; plain and simple. Some might interpret this as immature and say that you have to do things you don’t feel like doing when you are a mature adult. I don’t disagree. However, I have a little different take on this. Of course, we have to do things that we don’t feel like doing (meaning would rather not do; that’s part of maturity). However, the part of this that’s important to distinguish is to “feel like it.” There is a feeling that goes with what we do. I might get the yard work done because I feel like doing it. So, what is the “FEELING” that I experience that allows me to get it done? It depends. There are many times in your life that you “feel like” or “don’t feel like” doing something. And for most of you, I think the way you interpret that thought or experience is different than what I am talking about. In this episode, I talk about the importance of being able to shift your state as needed, rather than having to wait it out, and the value of building a "feeling library" to borrow from when you need to "feel like it." It’s so worth it!!!

Hey ADDers! I’m so glad you could join me today, and I hope you’re enjoying the little changes I’ve been making to deliver more focused content on topics of importance to you, as well as the way in which that content is now being delivered. When I first launched this podcast show, I felt the format needed to have three stories to illustrate the points of information I was teaching because we all remember stories. I would think about the characters, the point of the stories and work to pull it all together in a way that I thought would be good for you as my listeners. Since I was making up all the stories that I shared with you; that was roughly 6 stories a week that I needed to create and organize. If you know anything about my background and challenges with writing, you know that this was a huge undertaking for me and I made it work and grew as a result. I chose the topics of Inattention, Clarity and Foresight for today because I’ve received a lot of questions over the years about these topics, and I want you to understand how they are inter-connected and impact each other. That without focused attention (on the right focal points) it is difficult to cultivate clarity (seeing or knowing your destinations or journey) and without clarity, it is pretty hard to have the foresight you need (looking ahead for how things will unfold along the journey and what challenges you might encounter) because how would you know where to look? If this sounds a bit vague right now, it will become clearer as we go along. I hope that you’ve taken the time to listen to a few key episodes that seem to be on the minds of many of my listeners; perhaps you are one of them: Episode 036, Ask Dr B About The High Cost Of Not Knowing About Executive Function, Episode 027, Figuring Out Where To Start When So Much Needs Your Attention Now, and Episode 001, It’s Not Your Fault & You’re Not Off The Hook Either. If you’ve listened to all three of these episodes, you know what I’m talking about and if you haven’t I highly recommend that you listen to them soon. What does it mean to be “Inattentive” and what’s the big deal about being “inattentive?” I hear this a lot from people who don’t understand the “dis-ordering” impact of Inattention. How your brain, mind and body works is the uniqueness of you. And if how you are put together currently is “dis-ordered” it doesn’t have to stay that way. Your uniqueness doesn’t have to be a limitation; it can be your strength once you understand YOU and what you need to live as your best self. It’s my hope that you’ll get some of what you need here. Remember that most adults who receive a diagnosis of adult ADHD do not receive a diagnosis of Executive Function Deficits at the same time. If they did and received the skill training they needed, it could make all the difference in the world in terms of their quality of life and personal success. If you relate to my story, here's two action steps you can take: Get yourself on the Waitlist for ADDventures in Achievement. Hey ADDers!  So glad you could join me for today’s podcast episode.  I shared in the last episode that I was late on the release of episode 46 because of some health challenges last week, and said that I was going to talk about it today.  So, today’s episode is a little different format, however, I trust you will find benefit in the content. The information I need to share today is relevant whether you have ADHD, executive function deficits, depression, anxiety or physical health challenges.  Why is it important for me to share this?  Because if you aren’t aware of the far-reaching effects of mold (which I wasn’t) and where it can hide and what it can do to your brain and body, you need this information.  And I’m only scratching the surface here. And it isn’t just water leaks creating mold you need to be thinking of.  Many of the adults I work with have stacks and stacks of papers lying all around because that’s their organizational system.  Dust on papers can contain mold spores; the same with the dust on your walls if you haven’t dusted them recently or ever.  I looked at my walls in that room and then all my rooms and dusted all the walls with something that attracted the dust so it wouldn’t just go flying into the air and make things worse.  And then there are the carpets, rugs, curtains, drapes and any of your fabric furniture, such as a sofa, loveseat, or chair.  I’m lucky there because I only have wood and tile flooring, except for the one or two throw rugs.  And I have very few window coverings because I like the natural light to come in.  I don’t need many window coverings for privacy where I live.  So I didn’t have to get all of those things taken down and cleaned.  Many of the symptoms of mold exposure can be misdiagnosed as other health conditions and it’s important to know what to look for because it could be a missing piece to your better health and functioning, especially if you experience a foggy brain. It wouldn’t be a complete episode if I didn’t ask you about your WINS and encourage you to acknowledge them and celebrate them, so that’s what we’ll do now. I generally ask you about just one thing that’s gone right or is right with you, and I’d like to encourage you to look at more than just one WIN right now. The more I pay attention to the concept of WINS, the more WINS of my own I become aware of. I also experience a lot of gratitude when I celebrate my WINS. Do you? Unless this is your first time listening to my show, you’ve heard lots of examples of what I consider WINS, and I’d like you to take a moment and think about ALL the things that have gone right for you or with you today. If you woke up today, that’s a WIN. If you’re breathing on your own, that’s a WIN. If you have food to eat and you’re able to eat, that’s a WIN. If you have a bed of your own to sleep in, that’s a WIN. If you’re a kind person, that’s a WIN. If you’re able to think about your life with some clarity, that’s a WIN. If you are a compassionate person, that’s a WIN. Perhaps you reach other to others to help them, that’s another WIN. You get the picture; there’s a lot to be grateful for every day and to me these are WINS as well. So whatever you choose to reflect on right now is up to you; and I’d love it if you’d take a moment right now and think about some of the things that you’re grateful for that are WINS for you. That’s right. I know it doesn’t take away all the challenges you also have in your life right now; I get that. However, with a shift in your focus and attitude so many more good things can happen. Whatever really challenging circumstances exist in your life right now doesn’t take away from the fact that you have things to be grateful for and celebrate as WINS. You are a precious child of the universe; and are called a “human being” not a “human doing” for good reason. You don’t have to earn your value; you were born with it. You’re value comes from “who” you are; not what you do. Got it? I hope so because it can make a world of difference. In this episode, I’m going to be talking about mold exposure and it's impact on your mind and body, as well as your canine and feline companions and what you can start to do about it so you can live a healthier, happier and more productive life. Hey ADDers! I’m so glad you could join me today, and hope that you’ve taken the time to listen to a few key episodes that seem to be on the minds of many of my listeners; perhaps you are one of them: Episode 036, Ask Dr B About The High Cost Of Not Knowing About Executive Function, Episode 027, Figuring Out Where To Start When So Much Needs Your Attention Now, and Episode 001, It’s Not Your Fault & You’re Not Off The Hook Either. If you’ve listened to all three of these episodes, you know what I’m talking about and if you haven’t I highly recommend that you listen to them soon. Today, I want to talk about how ADHD and Executive Function Disorder or EFD co-exist and what that looks like. I feel it’s important for me to talk about this because I keep hearing people talk about their ADHD symptoms and they are confusing their ADHD symptoms with their EFD symptoms. So, I want to shed some light on EFD symptoms, ADHD symptoms, how they co-exist, and what you can start to do about this very complex challenge. Before I give you a brief overview of the EF skills, if you’ve ever wondered what the purpose of the EF skills is; in brief, it’s to organize and act on information. So, here’s an overview: Impulse control (or inhibition) helps you think before you act. Without it, you might blurt out inappropriate things. Emotional control (or self-regulation) helps you keep your feelings in check or alter how you feel about things. Without it, you might overreact, as well as have trouble dealing with criticism or regrouping when things go wrong. Flexible thinking helps you adjust to the unexpected events of life. It also helps you shift your attention from one thing to another. Without it, your thinking is “rigid” and you can’t roll with the punches. You might even get frustrated when someone wants you to see things from their point of view. Working memory (non-verbal) helps you keep key information in your mind while you are learning something new. It also helps you to multi-task and to remember what you are doing in each task or project. Without it, you could have trouble remembering directions or steps in a project, even if you’ve taken notes or repeated the information to yourself many times; it just falls away. Working memory (verbal) helps you direct your life via self-speech or an internal dialogue. “Self-Talk.” I prefer to externalize this speaking. Self-monitoring (or self-awareness) helps you assess how you’re doing. Without it, you might be surprised when things turn out as they do because you aren’t accurately tracking yourself and how what you do or don’t do impacts other people or outcomes. Planning and prioritizing helps you set a goal and a plan to meet your goal. Also known as “self-play” which is how you play with information in your mind and come up with new ways of doing something. You experiment with combining parts of things in different ways to come up with the best solution for you. Without it, you might not know which tasks are most important to get done first or which parts of a project are the most important or which information you are reading is the most important; since not everything you read is the most important. Task initiation (or self-motivation) helps you take action and get started on something; it’s what activates you, particularly when there is no immediate external consequence. Without it, you might freeze up and have no idea where to begin with a task or project; you could feel lost or overwhelmed. Organization helps you keep track of things; both physically and mentally. Without it, you could lose things as well as thoughts; just draw a blank. Today’s episode is all about answering the questions you have about issues or challenges you experience as an adult living with ADHD, and offering you hope. I have one story for you today about the complexities of ADHD and Executive Function Disorder plus action steps.  If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of this information and feeling that you’re going to need some help working with the complexities of ADHD and Executive Function Disorder, so you can develop the skills you need to increase your happiness, productivity, and success, I suggest you put your name on the Waitlist for my online program, ADDventures in Achievement. Hey ADDers! So glad you could join me for today’s podcast episode. I’ve talked a lot about the challenges of adult life with ADHD, including Executive Function Deficits, and I’ve offered you lots of action steps to take. I’ve also talked about you as the “human being” and not the “human doing.” I got to thinking that I haven’t talked about Strengths, or rather “your strengths” yet and so today’s the day for that. I remember this information was important to me years ago and perhaps it will be important for you as well. First, a little about what’s right with you. Each of you came to this lifetime with gifts and strengths. Whether you appreciate or value your gifts and strengths is a different issue; however, you have gifts and strengths. That said, accepting what your gifts and strengths are and working with them seems like the best road to personal happiness and success. And I don’t mean accepting with resignation or resentment. Look at your gifts and strengths with a sense of admiration and start wondering where and how you can utilize them. At least for the time being, stop longing for what you don’t have and start appreciating what you do have. It’s the only way I know of that you’ll be able to shift your mindset so you can truly start wondering where and how you can best utilize them. Here's the link for the VIA Free Character Strengths Test:  Click HERE In this episode, I’m going to be taking a look at The VIA Classification of Strengths and helping you to see what’s right with you so you can leverage that for a happier and more productive life. Welcome to the forty-fourth episode of Harness Your ADHD Power, and the twentieth "Ask Dr B" Show.   Hey ADDers! I’m so glad you could join me today, and hope that you’ve taken the time to listen to Monday’s episode on H.O.P.E., which stands for Help One Person Everyday and That Person Is YOU! I feel the message is relevant to everyone, whether you live with ADHD or not. I’ve received a lot of questions lately about the complexities of living with depression, anxiety and/or ADHD, so that’s today’s focus. I’m also going to focus on what family members can do to help a loved one who is suffering with any or all of these. For you to break free of the limitations of any of these, and have things get better for you, you’re going to need to change your attitude or mindset. I don’t mean to make it sound simple, because it’s not. However, you can make changes, even in the throes of any of these and improve the quality of your life and your relationships. So, what do I mean? I mean that the way you’ve been thinking isn’t going to get you there. And if you never knew until right now that you can think about how you think, and what you think, and change all of that, I’m here to tell you that you can. Probably no one taught you how to think; they may have taught you “what” to think, but not “how” to think. Being more specific, you attitude is how you view life; the lens you view it through and how you give events and experiences their meaning. Your attitude is your perspective or viewpoint. It’s how you make sense of things for you. Every WIN you acknowledge and celebrate with emotional authenticity, is changing your neurology, meanings and mindset in a positive way.  The proof is in the posts I read regularly in the program site and the community group.  Seems like a great return on your time investment. Please don't short-change yourself by thinking that it’s pointless or stupid to reward yourself for things you’re “supposed to do.”  That couldn’t be further from the truth.  Are you really going to wait until something HUGE happens to celebrate?  Does something HUGE happen everyday?  Probably not!  But the kind of WINS I’m talking about do.  And based on the feedback I get from the students in my program, this regular practice of celebrating their WINS is changing their lives. Today’s episode is all about answering the questions you have about issues or challenges you experience as an adult living with ADHD, and offering you hope. How much time do we have? Not much. So let’s get to it. Wondering how you can ask me questions? Just click the link in the episode description where it says “Ask Dr B” and ask away. Hey ADDers! I’m so glad you could join me for today. As Jim Rohn said, “For things to change, you have to change.” He was referring to your attitude and your mindset. Seriously! So let’s get to it! HOPE is essential for you to achieve beyond your current limits. If you don’t have HOPE that your life can be different, then you must borrow my HOPE. I have an abundance of HOPE, and will gladly loan you as much as you need until you have restored your own. When it comes to HOPE, there are two groups of people: High HOPE people and Low HOPE people. Let me tell you a little bit about each of them. High HOPE people set difficult goals for themselves and have several goals in different life areas at the same time. They embrace their goals and view them as welcome challenges. They use their goals as mental touchstones for success, direct their attention and effort to the demands of the situation, and are spurred on by obstacles to greater effort. They think of alternative routes to their goals when things get tough, and they are getting blocked. They apply themselves to the path that is most likely to work for them. They have a strong connection to their life goals and expect to obtain excellent returns on their mental investments. And they are typically optimistic, have a sense of control over their life, good problem-solving abilities, high self-esteem, and a positive mood. Low HOPE people tend to quit because they are not trained to think of alternative routes; they have one route and they go that route. They do not actively pursue goals and are more concerned with protecting themselves than striking out to achieve. They are typically pessimistic, have no real sense of control over their life, have limited problem-solving abilities, lower self-esteem, and have a less positive mood. And, they tend to believe that things are tougher than they really are. This creates stress and a narrow vision of how best to go about solving the problem. In this episode, I’m going to talk about how you can make the changes you need to make so things can change of you for the better. Hey ADDers! I’m so glad you could join me today. You know, if you don’t find a way to stay present every day and have some sort of tracking system for your important goals, then your life could unfold in kind of a haphazard way and those important goals might never be realized; which would be awful. Years ago an anonymous quote came into my life - “Set a goal SO BIG that you can’t achieve it until YOU GROW INTO THE PERSON WHO CAN.” I love this quote because it told me where to focus my efforts.  It’s important to point out here that my focus was on each day, rather than some distant day when I had become the person I needed to be. Instead, day-by-day, I focused on what I could do each day to become more of that person. I asked myself what I could do each day that would advance me closer to becoming more of my best self; how could I challenge myself to strengthen and grow in the direction of becoming more of me. I was developing habits that would continue to serve me long after I became the person who could achieve the goal. In this episode, I’m going explore three keys concepts that are important pieces when you are getting clear on designing and living a happier, productive and more successful life across all areas of your life.   To help out the show: Leave an honest review on iTunes.  Your ratings and reviews really help and I read each one. Welcome to the fortieth episode of Harness Your ADHD Power, and the eighteenth "Ask Dr B" Show.   I’m so glad you could join me today! So, are any of today’s topics a challenge for you?  If you’re like most of the adults I know and love, then I already know that the answer is yes.  And I’m curious, if you’ve ever wondered “why” these are so challenging for you?  I used to wonder and don’t anymore, so let me share a bit about what I’ve figured out about “why” they can be so challenging First a key piece about neuroplasticity; the brain that continually changes itself.  Your brain rapidly prunes disused circuits and strengthens most-used circuits, which means that what you don’t use you do lose to a greater or lesser degree.  This is important to keep in mind.  Next, I want to speak to your self-esteem for a moment.  YOU are not a failure!  Rather, the systems have failed you.  The systems have failed to teach you everything you needed to know (meaning skills), in the ways you needed to learn, so that you could have a happy, productive and successful adult life.  AND…it’s never too late to learn the skills that will make that possible for you NOW…no matter what your age is!  I really need you to pause for a moment and take this in.  YOU are not a failure.  Rather, the systems have failed you.  AND, it is your responsibility to learn the skills, mostly executive function skills you are missing, if you want to have a happier, more productive and successful adult life.  After so many conversations with adults like you, I know that you want to be on time, and I know that you haven’t been able to be on time for a variety of reasons; and none of them are because you lack the desire to be on time.  I know that you want to be able to see which tasks need to be done first, second and so, and then be able to start them when they need to be started and finish them, yet you haven’t been able to do that either.  And again, it’s not for lack of desire on your part.  I know that when you think about the day ahead, you want to be productive and feel proud at the end of the day for all you have accomplished.  Instead, you look at how you spent your time and see that much of it was “busy work” and not productive work on the essential things that you really wanted to be working on.  I’ve seen the beat-down look on so many of your faces when you share these “failures” with me and it breaks my heart, because I know these failed attempts only add to the negative feelings you already have about yourself; feelings that may have been growing for years now. And remember to pay attention to your WINS!!  Please don't short-change yourself by thinking that it’s pointless or stupid to reward yourself for things you’re “supposed to do.”  That couldn’t be further from the truth.  And if you feel that these are the “thankless little tasks of life,” they probably feel that way because that’s how you think of them and have given them that “less than” meaning.  Please don’t.  These are the very things that deserve to be celebrated so they become easier to do consistently, and you find them more enjoyable each and every time. Today’s episode is all about answering the questions you have about issues or challenges you experience as an adult living with ADHD, and offering you hope. How much time do we have? Not much. Welcome to the thirty-ninth episode of Harness Your ADHD Power. I’m so glad you could join me today. One of the episodes you all are listening to the most is 027, figuring out where to start when so much needs your attention now. That said, I decided that it’s important for you to understand what some of the steps are you need to be taking in order to be successful in getting a handle on all the moving parts of your life that need your attention now. I talk a lot about pre-skills. What do I mean by this term? Pre-skills are whatever skills you need to learn or master in order to do what you want or need to do and you won’t be able to do so without the pre-skills. I posed a question years ago. It was, if you were able to focus on what you need to focus on, when you need to focus on it, and how you need to focus on it and complete your tasks, AND, if you were able to regulate your moods or emotions when you needed to, and how you needed to so you didn’t become overwhelmed or derailed by your emotional life, would those two solutions address the majority of the challenges you experience from your ADHD? The answer I got years ago was a definite YES. What about your answer? A definite YES? Imagine being able to master these two areas of your life. This is truly what I mean by pre-skills. They are the pre-requisites to your success in so many areas of your life. I can teach you strategies for following through or prioritizing or organizing or better communication with loved ones, however, if you can’t regulate your focus and emotional state, you’re going to have difficulty mastering the strategies and tools. Something else I’ve noticed is a lack of a sense of urgency in those with ADHD until the urgency comes crashing in on you from the outside; but no sense of urgency to get into action and follow through from within yourself, in most cases. And what about your “criteria” for the decision you need to make? Do you have any? Or rather, do you have the type of “criteria” that will empower you to make good decisions and know why you’ve made them? Without that, how can you possibly learn from your mistakes or outcomes? In this episode, I’m going explore the many pre-skills that are essential to you designing, cultivating and mastering a happier and more productive life across all areas of your life.   To help out the show: Leave an honest review on iTunes.  Your ratings and reviews really help and I read each one. Welcome to the thirty-seventh episode of Harness Your ADHD Power. I’m so glad you could join me today. Whether it’s the relationship with you, someone else or both, relationships are definitely wonderful vehicles for helping us to see ourselves more clearly and presenting us with opportunities for transformation. I’m not just talking about the communication or lifestyle challenges or differences of opinion that you have with others or even within yourself. No. I’m talking about the deeper issues of your history or baggage, the meanings you’ve given it that have shaped your personal stories, and often slammed your self-confidence and self-esteem into the ground; and your beliefs and values that have taken a hit too. And what about your intentionality in your relationships? Do you choose your relationships with negotiable and non-negotiable criteria that are well thought out, and honor your commitment to yourself, rather than impulsively jumping into relationships that don’t match your criteria, because you are “impulsively reacting” rather than responding according to your criteria? How about your self-awareness and clarity? Do you know yourself so well that you are crystal clear on exactly what you need your relationship with yourself to be; how you need to speak to yourself, treat yourself, be with yourself, motivate yourself, celebrate yourself, and organize your life so you are set up for successful outcomes? And what about your relationships with others? Are you equally clear about the people you will and won’t be in a relationship with, personally and professionally? And do you keep your word or commitment to yourself, on this sacred non-negotiable? I suspect that most of you don't. In this episode, I’m going explore the many ways that cultivating a healthy and loving relationship with your SELF isn’t a selfish act; in fact, it’s critical as an essential building block on the road to your success in academia, the workplace and your coupleship/family life or other relationships.   To help out the show: Leave an honest review on iTunes.  Your ratings and reviews really help and I read each one. I relate with love to all of life.” The question I have for you at this point of our journey together is, “If you don’t currently have this depth of loving relationship with yourself, are you willing to begin to cultivate and sustain it now?” I hope so because it will change your life forever!

Welcome to the thirty-sixth episode of Harness Your ADHD Power, and the sixteenth "Ask Dr B" Show.   I’m so glad you could join me today.  We’ve got a lot to cover today, so let’s get to it. I’ve been pretty hyperfocused lately on Executive Function overall and specifically the skills that we need to develop for a more successful adult life, especially if we didn’t develop them starting back in childhood.  So whether you’ve mastered them all (which probably isn’t true if you’re listening to my podcast show) or will be learning them now, the point is, you need to learn them because they’re the foundational skills that we build a successful adult life on; with greater ability to successfully navigate the responsibilities that comes with adulthood.  No lie here! So today’s episode is about the high cost of not knowing about executive function skills and the questions I’ve been getting recently about this topic: what is it, how come no one told me about it when I got my diagnosis of ADHD, and how come nobody told me I needed to develop these skills so that I could be more successful in my life?    What I see has been happening over the years is that many of us have received a diagnosis of ADHD, whether it’s primarily inattentive, hyperactive, impulsive or a combination package of all three.  Some of us have opted to include medication as part of our “treatment plan” and others have not.  Some of us have opted to include rigorous exercise, good nutrition, a solid sleep routine and so on, as part of our “treatment plan.”  But nowhere in all of this have I heard of adults being told or knowing that they also had a decision to make of whether or not they were going to include the development and/or mastery of their Executive Function Skills.  This is not even a conversation that adults I know have had, unless of course they are in my ADDventures in Achievement program, in which case, this is definitely what we are focusing on because every student in the program needs to up their game with Executive Function skill-sets. And based on what I’ve been seeing, I trust that you also need to up your Executive Function skill-sets and this may be the first time you are even hearing about this.  If so, I’m glad you’re here today and getting this information. Do you have a hard time even putting words to what you don’t know? Let me help. It’s okay to send me questions like “I don’t understand why I can’t fall asleep at night, even when I’m tired” or “Why I’m so slow to wake up in the morning even after a full 8 hours sleep.” Whatever you send me as a question or statement, I’ll write you back if I don’t understand and ask you questions to clarify, so no worries. OK? Wondering how you can ask me? Just click the link in the episode description on your mobile device or on my website where it says “Ask Dr B” and ask away. I’ll be notified and get to work on answering your question. You can also Ask Dr B every Monday at 5 pm Pacific time when I go live in the community group for Q & A. When Criticism Is Abundant & Kind Words Are Scarce - 035

Living Beyond ADHD

Welcome to the thirty-fifth episode of Harness Your ADHD Power. I’m so glad you could join me today. Throughout my 30+ years of working with adults with ADHD, Executive Function deficits, depression, anxiety, addictions, and many other co-occurring challenges, I’ve noticed a theme that bears talking about today. And that is the abundance of “symptoms” that often present themselves to us, and are basically saying, “Hey you! There are things you need to pay attention to and take care of here.” And, if we are fortunate enough to both hear and understand the messages of those “symptoms,” and actually take action to search out what the underlying issues are, and follow through on resolving them, we can put an end to a lot of the suffering that we live with. Difficulties and challenges are part of life; ongoing suffering involves your mind and is optional. So you might be wondering what all of that has to do with the topics abundant criticism and scarcity of kind words. I’ll be getting there, so stay with me on this. I see this episode inter-connected with four others I’ve produced: “027-Figuring out where to start when so much needs your attention now, 001-It’s not your fault & you’re not off the hook either, 030-Ask Dr B – about Stories we tell ourselves, low self-esteem & self-sabotaging behaviors, and 004-What is your procrastination a symptom of?” If you’re like so many of the adults I work with, you have a ton of issues that all need your attention now and you don’t even know where to start, let alone know how you are going to get them all done. And it hasn’t you're your fault up to this point, because you most likely haven’t been given the information you needed and the path to the learning and mastery of the missing skills, so you could take responsibility and make the necessary changes. And with so many years of failed attempts or failed outcomes, your self-esteem may be quite low, the stories you tell yourself are self-defeating and not empowering you at all and you fell into the trap years ago of short-term solutions or Band-Aids that have now become self-sabotaging behaviors because they were only intended as short-term solutions. And your procrastination “symptoms” are “messengers” telling you where to look for what the underlying issues are but if you don’t know that and have been working on trying to “fix” your procrastination around getting started, keeping going and actually finishing up, then you’ve been chasing after the wrong issues because those are just “symptoms.” In this episode, I’m going to explore the many ways that criticism is abundant and kind words are scarce in the lives of adults with ADHD and other co-existing conditions. And a little hint: it has to do with your relationship with yourself. To help out the show: Leave an honest review on iTunes.  Your ratings and reviews really help and I read each one. It’s definitely a journey, one that’s unique for each person. And if you’re on this journey, I applaud you for your courage straight away. Truly! The time is going to pass in your life whether you learn them now, learn them later or never learn them. Funny thing about time, it’s indifferent to the choices and decisions we make. Did you wake up with questions or confusion this morning? Are you wondering how to get yourself organized? Or how to keep motivated to finish something today? Are you looking for answers? If so, consider sending your questions or confusion over to me so I can help you. I’d love to do that! If you’re like so many other adults with ADHD, you might not know where to start, or how to start. Or what to do when you get to something that stops you. Welcome to the thirty-third episode of Harness Your ADHD Power. I'm so glad you could join me for today’s podcast episode.  If you’ve been trying to solve your procrastination challenges forever, without much success, perhaps it’s because procrastination is a “behavioral symptom” and not the real problem.  “Behavioral symptoms” are great because they tell us that something is wrong.  It’s just that we then need to look beyond them, if we’re going to solve the underlying issues that are presenting us with those “behavioral symptoms.” It’s kind of like having a fever (the symptom) when the underlying issue is a raging infection.  I hope you’d be treating the raging infection and not just take something for the fever. I want to introduce you to Professor Alfred Bandura, if you aren’t familiar with his name or his work.  Back in 1997 he said that self-efficacy is different than confidence.  Confidence is this vague term that refers to your “strength of belief,” but it doesn’t necessarily say where your certainty is coming from.  It’s like you saying, “I’m confident I can do that.”  I’d have to ask you, “What makes you believe you can do that?”  I’d want to know the evidence or behind the scenes knowing you have that allows you to make that statement.  I’d want to know where your confidence is coming from; the evidence.  It could be that you just finished a course or training on that topic or task, and understand it thoroughly and that is why you can make the confident statement.  That would tell me why you are confident. Or, are you just saying that you are confident because you “hope” you can do it, but don’t know with certainty that you have the skills or necessary training, and hence don’t really know that you can?  Or, you might even know with certainty that you don’t have the skills but still “hope” you can do it; hence “fantasy or wishful thinking;” which is very, very common.  The differences are very important.  Self-efficacy is you believing you will be able to accomplish a specific task.  It refers to both your capability level and your strength of belief in your capability level.  You are “confident” you can produce successful results because you are “competent” in the necessary skills, abilities or beliefs to do so.  Hence, Competence = Confidence. A quote by Henry Ford is fitting here.  He said, “Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.” In this episode, I’m going to dig deeper into the procrastination puzzle and piece together a different way of looking at this “symptom” that can get you into action instead of sitting and waiting for the block to pass. We are able to say, ‘I have fallen, but I will get up.’” The question I have for you at this point of our journey together is, “Have you fallen into the trap of believing that your procrastination is the problem when there are actually underlying reasons why you have to keep yourself from moving forward? And, are you ready to get up and embrace this challenge with new insights and tools?” I hope so because it’s totally worth it!!

Welcome to the thirty-second episode of Harness Your ADHD Power, and the thirteenth "Ask Dr B" Show.   I’m so glad you could join me today for my podcast show. We’ve got a tighter format, hot topics and clear steps to take starting today, so let’s get to it. So many of the adults I work with or dialogue with have been diagnosed later in life. There are many reasons for this and it’s not the end of the world; far from it - it’s the beginning of your new life. Borrowing a phrase from the Foreword to the First Edition of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous - “recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body” is what comes to mind when I think of ADHD and Executive Function Deficits. Many adults have lived or continue to live in a seemingly hopeless state. Many haven’t received a diagnosis yet or any truly useful help, and many feel hopeless; even suicidal at times. I’ve even sat with pre-teens who were feeling so hopeless that they couldn’t focus or study or keep up with their assignments and had all but given up. That is just NOT okay! Not for anyone!! And since our mental health system doesn’t seem to be able to catch up or step up to address this huge problem, then it’s up to you to educate yourself and advocate for yourself and your loved ones as best you can, so that the care that is so desperately needed is received. And that’s all well and good for me to say that, but you might not feel that you are able to do this on your own. I get it. And, I’m going to give you whatever I can here to help. And what about your questions? Did you wake up with any this morning? If so, and you’re looking for answers, consider sending your questions over to me so I can answer them or find the answers for you. I’d love to do that!  Just click here and you can Ask Dr B directly. Just click here if you want to make your needs known to me via the quick little 6-question survey.   To help out the show: Leave an honest review on iTunes.  Your ratings and reviews really help and I read each one. What’s Missing When Skillful Communication Is Just Not Happening - 031

Welcome to the thirty-first episode of Harness Your ADHD Power. I'm so glad you could join me for today’s podcast episode. It’s time for another change to the format. The episodes have been getting a bit long, so I’m moving back to the sweet spot of roughly 30 minutes. That means cutting out some of the repetitive content, in order to keep the episodes focused on great content, stories, action steps and a favorite quote of mine. I appreciate all your suggestions and input so I can consider everything and provide you with the best of me in ways that are best for you too. Just because you can speak, doesn’t mean you can communicate skillfully or say what you intend to convey. Just because you know the words doesn’t mean that you are using them skillfully. Just because you get everything out that you want to say, doesn’t mean it is received as you intended. And, if you have beliefs about not wanting to hurt anyone’s feelings, then you’ve already set yourself up to not say what’s on your mind because you’ll be focused on censoring yourself; not focused on what you want to convey. Some of the goals for this episode are to provide you with a basic understanding of communication; what it is and is not. What your responsibility is as the communicator. What your responsibility is as the listener. The role boundaries play in communication. How to communicate assertively, skillfully and say what you intend with greater confidence and ease of expression. And of course, there will be some actions steps you can begin to take today.   To help out the show: Leave an honest review on iTunes.  Your ratings and reviews really help and I read each one. Welcome to the thirtieth episode of Harness Your ADHD Power, and the thirteenth "Ask Dr B" Show.   I’m so glad you could join me today. I get SO excited to create episodes that you my listeners ask for. You send me questions or issues that you are struggling with and ask for insights and solutions, which results in inspiration and another great episode. You have no idea how happy that makes me; or maybe you do. Based on Monday’s episode 029, I hope you all get just how important it is that we develop executive function skills; just not something we should skip over or take lightly. If you haven’t listened to that episode yet, I recommend you do so you’ll understand what I mean. There’s no short cut here. These skills are the pre-requisites to the more advanced skills we need to learn and master in adulthood; and we can’t jump to advanced skills without the basic foundational ones in place. Correction…we can jump there, but we can’t stay there because we don’t have what is needed to succeed. And what about your questions? Did you wake up with any this morning? If so, and you’re looking for answers, consider sending your questions over to me so I can answer them or find the answers for you.
