88: Why Calorie Counting Fails Every Time

The Primal Shift

Counting calories seems logical on the surface: just burn more calories than you eat and you'll lose weight, right? But what if this seemingly straightforward advice is deeply flawed, inaccurate, and a massive waste of your time? In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I'm challenging one of the most entrenched myths in the health and fitness community: calorie counting. The truth is, your body isn't a simple calculator — it's a dynamic, complex system influenced by hormones, metabolism, and even the types of foods you choose. There's a huge gap between the calories you think you're burning and what your body is actually doing. Your smartwatch, fitness apps and even nutrition labels might lead you astray, with margin errors so big that your daily calculations become virtually meaningless. And that's before we even get into how different foods — protein versus carbs, for instance — are metabolized completely differently by the body. Instead of obsessing over calories, I suggest a radically simpler approach: prioritize protein, focus on satiety, and learn to tune into your metabolic signals. Because when your hormones (especially insulin) are balanced and your blood sugar stays stable, losing fat becomes infinitely easier. And if tracking helps you feel in control, forget calories and focus instead on how foods affect your body — perhaps through the use of a continuous glucose monitor. This episode isn't just about debunking calorie myths. It's about shifting your mindset to something more powerful: understanding your body's true needs. Let's stop counting imaginary numbers and start prioritizing real, nutrient-dense foods and listening to our own metabolic rhythms. In this episode, Leslie Beck, Medcan's Clinical Director of Food and Nutrition, discusses the US News & World Report's Best Diets rankings. This year marks the 15th year in a row that the US News & World Report has published these diet rankings, which were released in early January. Sixty-nine leading health experts evaluated 38 diets in 21 different categories. Beck reveals the top four overall-rated diets for 2025 and also highlights some of the other notable category winners, and explains how following these diets can help you achieve your health goals. The Rankings: Out of 38 diets, which diet ranked highest? (Hint: It's one of these four):  MIND diet Flexitarian diet DASH diet Mediterranean diet The Categories: In addition to Best Overall Diet, categories also included:  Best for Healthy Eating Best for Inflammation, Brain Health, Menopause, Prediabetes, Arthritis and Fatty Liver What The Top Diets Have in Common: Key features that support overall health and well-being Takeaways: All of this year's top rated diets emphasize whole plant foods, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and lentils, nuts, lean proteins and healthy fats, while limiting adding sugars and saturated fats. All of the diets have solid evidence to support their effectiveness for managing or preventing a health condition or chronic disease. None of the diets restrict entire food groups or ban certain foods.  The best diet is the one you can sustain long-term while meeting your health and lifestyle needs. When considering a diet, ask yourself: Does the plan promote a way of eating that's good for your children? (Find out why that's important by listening to the episode).  For personalized advice, consult your doctor or a Medcan dietitian at www.medcan.com/nutrition.

Do you get caught up in headlines that provide nutrition facts, such as “broccoli is going to make us die” and immediately stop eating broccoli? Today's episode is all about understanding these nutrition news articles and how to know if they are legit or clickbait. Today Jenn is walking through her top 5 tips for digesting nutrition news. It can be so confusing when we hear different statements from “professionals”, or learn of the next best diet to help us lose those unwanted pounds, but how do we know if they are the truth, will only work for some people, or just someone's biased opinion? Jenn discusses what to look for when you are hearing nutrition news, using your spidey sense, and how to process information when it may even be against your own bias. Tune in to learn how to use your wonder woman bangles so you can empower yourself through your own health journey. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: ●   [7:45] Tip Number 5: How to look at sources and benefactors of where the nutrition information is coming from?●   [11:04] Jenn gives a pharmaceutical example about indication drift.●   [15:27] Tip Number 4: Science isn't all equal.●   [16:49] What are the kinds of evidence to look for? ●   [22:39] Tip Number 3: Be careful of your own bias.●   [30:00] Tip Number 2: Use your spidey sense and common sense. ●   [37:17] Tip Number 1: Put on your wonder woman bangles. KEY TAKEAWAYS:●   When determining if a sourced study is legit, look at how many citations it has. This is often a way of saying how valid a study is. The more citations makes it more likely that the piece of evidence is reputable. ●   Keep your wits about you. Use the 5 tips from this episode to evaluate what you've heard or read before jumping into something so that you can make forward progress without distraction, overwhelm, and confusion, so you can remain empowered in your health. ●   Trust that your body knows what it needs to feel good. When you go to grab food, or have the desire to try the next fad diet, check in with yourself and ask if it is really the best option for you. If you decide to give it a try, tune in with your body on if it's actually benefiting you or if you are experiencing low energy. Every person's body operates differently and benefits from different ways of eating, so don't get caught up in the news. QUOTES: “We can get so much input that we can end up having shiny object syndrome where every day it's something new, or we're always grasping and we're not necessarily taking steps forward but we're taking lots of random steps.” - Jenn Trepeck “Spidey sense vs. common sense I also think of the dooms day. Are these headlines so dramatic like ‘we're all going to die because broccoli is going to cause cancer' or something, like is it the broccoli? Or is it the pesticides on the broccoli? There's all these other elements to it that I think capture our attention and that we want to use as setting off our spidey sense.” - Jenn Trepeck “They're looking to appeal to the most primitive part of your brain. Not your higher order thinking and the prefrontal cortex, but the back of the brain, the lizard brain, the brain that's survival and we can just deflect those with our wonder woman bangles until or unless we're willing to do a little more research or we're willing to figure out if they're verified.” - Jenn Trepeck “Science isn't all equal...what was compared? What question did they ask?” - Jenn Trepeck“Very rarely is there a study on broccoli, for example...There's very little [financial] incentive to pay for studies on individual foods or an individual nutrient.” - Jenn Trepeck“There are a few things where there is a general consensus among experts and people in this space: more vegetables, more whole foods, less added sugar, less refined grain.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram

As of right now, I’ve produced over 500 episodes of Muscle for Life, totaling over 700 hours of content. I’ve talked about a huge variety of things related to health, fitness, and lifestyle, ranging from the basics of diet and exercise like energy and macronutrient balance and progressive overload and training frequency and volume to fads like the ketogenic and carnivore diet and collagen protein to more unfamiliar territories like body weight set point and fasted cardio. Some episodes resonate with my crowd more than others, but all of them contain at least a few key takeaways that just about anyone can benefit from (that’s what I tell myself at least). And as cool as that is, it poses a problem for you, my dear listener: Ain’t nobody got time for that. Well okay, some people do make the time to listen to most or even all of my podcasts, but my wizbang analytics tell me that while many listeners tune in on a regular basis, they don’t catch every installment of Muscle for Life and thus miss out on insights that could help them get a little better inside and outside the gym. People have also been saying they’d like me to do more shorter, multi-topic episodes, like my Q&As. And so I got an idea: how about a “best of” series of podcasts that contains a few of the most practical and compelling ideas, tips, and moments from my most popular episodes? This way, people who are new to the show can quickly determine if it’s for them or not, and those who enjoy what I’m doing but don’t have the time or inclination to listen to all of my stuff can still benefit from the discussions and find new episodes to listen to. So, in this episode of The Best of Muscle for Life, you’ll be hearing hand-picked morsels from three episodes: Jeff Nippard on building your best butt ever The Best Diets and Workouts for Your Body Type MFL Book Club Podcast: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey And we’ll be starting with number one, Jeff Nippard on building your best butt ever. --- 4:48 - Jeff Nippard on building your best butt ever 19:13 - The best diets and workouts for your body type 26:52 - MFL Book Club Podcast: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey --- Mentioned on The Show: https://legionathletics.com/podcast-jeff-nippard/ https://legionathletics.com/body-type-podcast/ https://legionathletics.com/mfl-book-club-podcast-7-habits-of-highly-effective-people/ Shop Legion Supplements Here: legionathletics.com/shop/ --- Want to get my best advice on how to gain muscle and strength and lose fat faster? If you're a skinny guy or gal struggling to gain weight… Or a "fluffy" one struggling to "shift" fat… Or somewhere in between… This is going to be the most important fitness podcast you listen to. Seriously. And I want to start it with some good news: Your genetics can't stop you from getting the body you really desire. Yes, some people's bodies respond better to training than others', but I don't care how much of a "hardgainer" you think you are or how "stubborn" your body fat seems to be… -You can build muscle. -You can lose fat. -And you can do it faster than you think. Now, if you were to tell me your goal is to be an elite, competitive weightlifter or bodybuilder or physique competitor...that would be another story. In those cases, genetics are hugely important. Yes, steroids are involved and yes, training experience and methodologies matter...but the biggest and strongest guys and gals in the world were abnormally big and strong their entire lives. My point is this: at the top, where everyone works smart and hard, genetics determine who's truly great and who's not. That doesn't mean that us mere mortals are screwed, though. Your genetics will influence how quickly you can reach your goals but aren't going to keep you small, weak, and fat. And in this podcast, you're going to learn the three major body types, how to determine which you (primarily) are, and how to approach dieting and training for maximal results. Let's get to it. 8:09 - How do I determine my body type? Which body type do I have? 15:48 - What is the best type of body for ectomorphs? 37:16 - What are the best type of workouts for ectomorphs? 40:48 - How much cardio should ectomorphs do? 41:38 - What are the best supplements for ectomorphs? 43:53 - What is the mesomorph body type? 45:17 - What is the best diet for mesomorphs? 47:59 - What are the best type of workouts for mesomorphs? 50:13 - What is the endomorph body type? 51:34- What is the best diet for endomorphs? 54:52 - What are the best type of workouts for endomorphs? Join The Diet Bet We are kicking off the holidays by "doubling down" on losing weight as we enter the "holidays" see http://www.logicalloss.com/dietbet and have a chance to earn money losing weight So Many Diets... I had found a few articles that had titles like "10 Things You Need to Know about the ______ Diet." So I read a ton of these and here is what I found. The Vegan Diet A vegan diet can be healthy and may help lower cholesterol, aid in weight loss and reduce the risk of some diseases. But this is only “as long as you can commit to learning about how to meet your nutrient needs, plan ahead to ensure that you are meeting them and make whole foods your focus It doesn't' necessarily mean its healthy It's not a magic pill (you still need to your portions) You need to see out protein You're more than likely to fart The Whole 30 Diet Eat moderate portions of meat, seafood, and eggs; lots of vegetables; some fruit; plenty of natural fats; and herbs, spices, and seasonings. Eat foods with very few ingredients, all pronounceable ingredients, or better yet, no ingredients listed at all because they’re whole and unprocessed. It means NO sugar, alcohol, grains, legumes, dairy, carrageenan, MSG, or sulfites, baked goods, junk foods, or treats with “approved” ingredients.  Although there’s a lot of social media backing for this diet, there’s not a lot of support from experts. You'll need to plan your meals ahead of time Hard to stay consistent You're likely to end right where you started You might lack essential nutrients It's hard to eat out with friends Mediterranean Diet Continually near the top of the U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Diets lists, the Mediterranean diet is known for its heart health benefits and focus on fish, olive oil and red wine. It emphasizes whole foods, is vegetable-centric, replaces saturated fats with omega-3 rich heart-healthy fats, stresses the importance of seafood and whole grains and encourages more cooking and activity in the kitchen (you don't need to drink wine) It is more of a lifestyle than a diet, and with that probably more sustainable. As it doesn't focus on calories, you may not lose weight. You netter like Seafood You're allowed to eat pasta Paleo Diet In its purest form, the paleo diet allows you to eat only those foods that humans ate when they first roamed the planet millions of years ago. This means no grains, legumes, dairy or sugar and lots of meat, coconut, vegetables and fruit. There are benefits to eating a Paleo diet, such as consuming whole, unprocessed foods and lots of produce and being aware of the importance of high-quality meats. a 2016 review of controlled clinical trials comparing the diet to others, the strongest of the studies found no long-term differences between people following a Paleo diet and those on a control diet after two years. You will need to do some meal planning While many people think this is all about meat, it's also all about veggies. Buy good meat. Stay away from, sugar, soft drinks, artificial sweeteners, margarine and trans fats." BECOME A LOGICAL LOSER AND SUPPORT THE SHOW See www.logicallosers.com and www.logicallloss.com/support My New Toy I stopped by Walmart and just happened to see this device that cuts veggies up into slices and what appears to be spaghetti, as well as chips. I love squash but hadn't had any in years until I happen to have dinner at my brother's house. When I told one of my friends I bought one, they said, "You've got to work with some sweet potatoes and mix in some cinnamon. The one I bought a Walmart is all plastic, and if it snapped and broke I wouldn't be surprised. The other thing that I found disappointing was they didn't mark what blads did what. Luckily I caught this before I throughout the box, and grabbed a sharpy marker and fixed the issues. I have seen some units on Amazon that seem to come with the blads that are pre-labeled. It does take up some storage place, but I sliced up some squash, through some olive oil in a pan, lightly salted the squash, and it was done quickly. The clean up was super slick, and you can now call me a fan. Best of all, being a guitar player, I'm kind of happy my finders are nowhere near the blade. If you're looking for a quick easy way to get some veggies in your life, you might want to pick one up.

Finally! An answer to the question, "Which diet is the best?"Here's the short and simple: There is no best diet for everyone. There is no magic bullet that will make your waistline shrink and your health improve overnight. The best diet for you is the one that gives you the best results. Every person has different genetic factors and health histories. It's better to look at the key ingredients that successful diets include. If you're having trouble with chronic health issues or weight loss, a great place to start is the Mediterranean diet. It focuses on fresh whole foods like whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, red wine and olive oil. These components are helpful for most people. Purity makes a difference. Eat foods that aren't heavily processed. Stick to things that aren't packed with preservatives, fat and sugars. Portion size if also important. Americans are conditioned to have large, full plates of food. You don't have to super-size the meals you cook and eat. Mindful eating aids digestion. Dining while on the go doesn't relax your body for digestion. Mindless eating can lead to overeating or unhealthy eating. Chill out and enjoy the nourishment of your food. Meal planning is your friend. This keeps you from having to get fast food. Have things prepared and ready for meal prep. It takes a few minutes to sauté veggies or make a smoothie, especially if you're prepared. Consider eating seasonally. Enjoy what nature is providing right now. Eat hearty soups in the winter and lighter soups and salads in summer. You can also save money by purchasing what is newly harvested. Start with a healthy breakfast. Have something rich in fiber, protein and healthy fat. It sets the stage for your day. Listen as Renee Simon joins Dr. Mike Fenster to share how to find the best diet for you.

Welcome to the forty-second episode of Harness Your ADHD Power, and the nineteenth "Ask Dr B" Show.   I’m so glad you could join me today!  I’m trying out a different format today and have two great topics for you as well, so let’s get to it! Last fall I learned how to go live on video; no small feat for sure. I’ve been pretty consistent since then, and June of this year, I was asked to answer questions for groups and so I opted to do Ask Dr B live videos 3x/week and have done so since June of this year. There have been a lot of great questions I’ve been asked and already responded to and thought I’d start sharing that information with you in the Ask Dr B episodes of my podcast show, so you can benefit from what’s already out there but you might have missed; or not watched if you prefer listening to podcasts. So, we’ll see how it goes and if this meets your needs. I’d love it if you’d email me or post reviews so I can know if I am meeting your needs with this different approach for the Thursday Ask Dr B episodes. Thanks so much! Every WIN you acknowledge and celebrate with emotional authenticity, is changing your neurology, meanings and mindset in a positive way.  The proof is in the posts I read regularly in the program site and the community group.  Seems like a great return on your time investment. Please don't short-change yourself by thinking that it’s pointless or stupid to reward yourself for things you’re “supposed to do.”  That couldn’t be further from the truth.  Are you really going to wait until something HUGE happens to celebrate?  Does something HUGE happen everyday?  Probably not!  But the kind of WINS I’m talking about do.  And based on the feedback I get from the students in my program, this regular practice of celebrating their WINS is changing their lives. Today’s episode is all about answering the questions you have about issues or challenges you experience as an adult living with ADHD, and offering you hope. How much time do we have? Not much. So let’s get to it. Wondering how you can ask me questions? Just click the link in the episode description where it says “Ask Dr B” and ask away. I’ll be notified and get to work on answering your question. You can also Ask Dr B every week when I go live in the community group for Q & A. Love to see you there as well.  Just click here and you can Ask Dr B directly. If you're feeling overwhelmed and would like to know more about the help you'll receive as a student in the ADDventures in Achievement program, I suggest you put your name on the Waitlist.  Enrollment just closed the end of August and I’m not planning on opening up again until later this year, however that could change. I plan on recording some informative videos for those of you on the Waitlist so you can benefit while you’re waiting for enrollment to open up again. I’m adding some exciting new content to the current program that is well worth the wait! ADDventures in Achievement is definitely the place to be if you want help understanding what’s been holding you back and want to learn the skills to break free of your stuckness. WAITLIST for ADDventures in Achievement online program To help out the show: Leave an honest review on iTunes.  Your ratings and reviews really help and I read each one. Subscribe on iTunes Thanks for listening!  Until the next time! Download the Episode Transcript Download the MP3 Audio File & listen to the episode when convenient You'll learn about: The importance of really looking for, acknowledging and celebrating your WINS! Best diet for life with ADHD Misdiagnosis:  Depression, Anxiety and ADHD I've created many different resources of you.  Here's what's available now: This podcast show, Harness Your ADHD Power, which currently releases two episodes per week, on Mondays and Thursdays. ADDventures in Achievement, my innovative online coaching and educational program. After 30+ years of working 1:1 with adults with ADHD and hearing from many who wanted to work with me that they couldn’t afford to do so for any meaningful period of time, I worked out a solution. Because the program includes lots of 1:1 work, I limit enrollment to ensure the success of all current students. The Harness Your ADHD Power Community on Facebook. With listeners in many parts of the world, I created a space were we can all come together to exchange ideas, talk about challenges and get answers as well. Please friend me on Facebook and then come and join our community with other like-minded adults making this journey.  Plus, I go live at 5 pm on Mondays in the group to answer your questions. Live videos on my Facebook page, ADDventures in Achievement, because many of you enjoy watching videos as well as listening to podcasts. So three times per week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, I go live and answer questions in an Ask Dr B format. A free video and e-book about getting your ADHD needs met from mental health professionals A free tips e-book on decision-making, since life’s filled with making decisions A Favorite Quote: There’s an anonymous quote that says, “What is the shortest word in the English language that contains the letters: ABCDEF? Answer: feedback. Don’t forget that feedback is one of the essential elements of good communication.” The question I have for you at this point of our journey together is “Are you willing to give yourself loving and supportive feedback instead of feedback that’s negative and critical of you?” I hope so; it will make a world of difference in your relationships with others and with yourself.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard my brother, Kenny Johnson on the podcast. In that time he lost 43 pounds of body-fat, got shredded and competed in a physique contest. Like me, Kenny got his first visible 6-pack after his 40th birthday. That means there’s plenty of hope for everyone who thinks their best days are behind them. Not evenly remotely true. Today Kenny and I are freestyling back and forth about: His exact diet plan and how it progressed. His training and cardio schedule. The diets we’ve felt best on. The difference between eating for health vs. physique vs. performance. What I did to get 9.5 hours of sleep 3 nights in a row. A secret way to improve your pressing. Every year, it's the same thing: U.S. News and World Report ranks 38 of the most popular diets from best to worst. And every single time, the paleo diet—or some variant, in this case the Whole30 plan—comes in dead last. I've written about this before. You know my stance. You know how silly the whole thing is, and why you shouldn't care about a ranking, especially when you've transformed your health eating the “worst diet in the world.” Frankly, I'm skeptical these reports have much impact anymore. In this video I go over the 5 BEST Diets for patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. These diets have all been used by me in my clinic and have helped other Hashimoto's patients lose weight and feel better. With all the information out there it can get confusing on which diet you should be following... this video will help you understand which diet you should be focusing on by tailoring it to YOUR body. The diets I go over: 1. Elimination diet or food sensitivity diet - Who should use this diet? those with multiple food allergies, post nasal drip, acid reflux or history of asthma/eczema 2. The autoimmune paleo diet or the autoimmune protocol Diet (abbreviated AIP diet) - Who should use this diet? Not everyone! I recommend patients who have a personal history of multiple autoimmune conditions or those who have failed less restrictive diets 3. The gluten free diet - Who should use this diet? Most patients should at least consider going gluten free, dairy free and soy free if they have Hahsimoto's. This is THE place to start. 4. The paleo diet Who should use this diet? Those with a history of depression, anxiety, gut imbalances or acne. This is also another great place to start 5. The low FODMAP's Diet Who should use this diet? Those who have a diagnosis of SIBO or yeast overgrowth or those with who experience gas/bloating or abdominal distention after meals. 3 Diets to AVOID With Hashimoto's: 1. Low fat diets 2. Very low carbohydrate diets or nutritional ketosis 3. Very low calorie diets All three of these can lead to worsening thyroid function!
