Golden Voice Adjoa Andoh narrates a complex story about identity and belonging set in Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch universe. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss this new standalone sci-fi mystery with a memorable cast of characters. Qven should have become a Presger translator, but for a terrible incident that sends them careening towards Enae Athur, Reet Hluid, and the Radch Empire. Adjoa expertly narrates the emotional depths of these three characters, each of whom comes from a background where they were not valued or or didn't feel part of a community. As all three claim their identities and start to heal, Andoh's performance will resonate in profound ways. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Hachette Audio. "Your band could be massive without God." That's what John Cooper was once told. But the Skillet frontman unashamedly ignored that advice and has doubled down on sharing his views on God and theology (he once declared a 'war' on deconstruction). He talks to Sam Hailes about what it's like to be in a Christian band that's loved and adored by a largely non-Christian audience. In part two, Premier Christianity's assistant editor Emma Fowle meets the Bridgerton actor and activist Adjoa Andoh. The pair discuss Adjoa's journey to faith, and her view that the Church should be "the place where you can be a hot mess; you don't have to be fine. It's you and God." Actor Adjoa Andoh has a list of TV, theatre and film credits as long as your arm. She's best known worldwide as Bridgerton's Lady Danbury, and is due to direct - and star in the title role - in a new production of Richard III. Her great life is the 20th century American writer and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, author of "Their Eyes Were Watching God". An iconic figure in the literature of the jazz age, her name was all but forgotten after her death in 1960, before being pulled back into public consciousness in the US by "The Color Purple" author Alice Walker, who famously wrote: "A people do not throw their geniuses away". With the help of fellow enthusiast Dr Janine Bradbury, Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Writing and Culture at the University of York, Adjoa makes the case that we should all know more about Zora, a trailblazer who - on top of her writing career - researched zombies in the Caribbean and helped collect the stories of slavery's last survivors. Their wide-ranging conversation takes in Eileen's working class roots, her pushy stage mum, a naughty deception that paid off at the Guildhall, the letters of Virginia Woolf, co-creating two TV juggernauts - Upstairs, Downstairs and The House of Elliot, and how to stay young and limber; and Adjoa's teenage yearning to be on the stage, quitting her Law degree to follow her dreams, her textbook 80s life on the road with a feminist touring company, the magic of actors and audiences coming together in theatre, and the joy of Shonda Rhimes. In 2020, COVID-19 threw the world into turmoil. For many of us, this was the first time that we had to take immediate – and drastic – action to protect our health and the health of others. We had to follow a new set of emergency policies and protocols, put in place at a time when many experts and authorities were only making the best decisions they could with the limited information they had. In a political climate that was already tense, having to separate from one another only made us more divided. Some masked, some didn't. Some believed that the best protection for children was to keep them away from school; others feared the long-term consequences of closing schools. Some isolated; others continued to gather. Then came the vaccines. So did the social pressure, the misinformation, the lack of trust – and the mandates. If the pandemic was already political, COVID shots and the messaging around them escalated the tension. And even with the CDC changing their guidelines and many cities doing away with mandates, people are still at odds with one another over vaccines, boosters, and the policies around COVID. In this episode, we hear from Dr. Adjoa Smalls Mantey. As a viral immunology researcher and trained psychiatrist, Adjoa understands why educating people about vaccines is just as important as making them. We discuss vaccine hesitancy, COVID policies, and how we can be more intentional about how we share information about illness and immunizations. In addition to her work as a psychiatrist, Adjoa is also the co-author of Anjali the Brave, a book that teaches children about vaccines. Find her book at or at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other retailers where eBooks are sold. You can also find Adjoa on Instagram @doctoradjoa and @anjalithebrave. Like this episode? On today's show we partnered with a young artist named Summer Blake, studying film & television at Drexel University. Summer had the opportunity to interview Adjoa Andoh who starred as Lady Danbury in the Netflix production Bridgerton. Her role in Bridgerton as a quick-witted, feisty noblewoman in the Regency court not only demonstrated the strength and versatility of Black women in the arts, but also opened the eyes of the viewers to show how many different roles in the art world are now attainable for Black artists. It signaled representation. Adjoa has performed in both film and stage productions for decades both in this country and in her native England. As an aspiring Black film director, Summer always had questions that dealt with race, feminism and inclusivity. When she watched Bridgerton for the first time, Summer was intrigued by the strength of Adjoa's character Lady Danbury. She enjoyed that Lady Danbury was an example of many of the things she hopes to create in her own characters.
When I worked with Adjoa Andoh on an RSC project I was struck by just how much work and skill goes into every performance. Adjoa is multi-skilled and has filled many roles outside of acting that will surely fascinate you as much as it did me - Let's get listening!Produced by Cheryl Davis Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
