12 Strength Training Mistakes in Menopause Robbing Your Results

Most commonly the challenge is gaining lean muscle. Doing all the things but can't seem to gain muscle? Then tune in and go through this like a check list of 12 strength training mistakes in menopause that could be the reason. It just takes one. But if there are multiple, it's compounded and in this case, not interest but penalty! Join us at Metabolism Makeover 2.0 to support your journey avoiding the 12 strength training mistakes in menopause. Overworking Small Muscle Groups [00:02:20] You need fewer of these small muscle group-focused exercises in your routine if you prioritize the major muscles like chest (pectoralis) and back (trapezius and Latissimus Dorsi). If the secondary (biceps and triceps) muscles are going to get a workout most of the time, these will rob you of time and energy that is better spent on major muscles if you aren't getting in the adequate volume there. Skipping the Warmup [00:06:40] Nearly a decade ago, I began sharing the fact that if you skip the warmup, you also miss an opportunity to increase total energy expenditure during a workout. It's not only about injury prevention. There's an increased blood circulation, improved energy expenditure, mobility and you can work closer to your capacity. If fitness and longevity are truly goals, “exercising” is not the same as working at your capacity and safely, sanely raising the roof on your fitness level so that age doesn't automatically result in slowing down or gaining weight. Not Resting Between Sets Long Enough Before [00:13:10] Rapidly moving from one exercise to the next, was yesterday. The “metabolic conditioning workouts” are a nice anomaly, a change in pace. Rest between sets of strength training. Reach complete muscle fatigue or within 2 reps of it. If you do HIIT, separate the sessions so you get the best benefit from it and from strength. If you are not getting stronger, not increasing muscle, and these are your goals (in order, perhaps to improve body fat % ultimately), it's a “how” you're doing it problem. Plan Your Routine to Avoid 12 Strength Training Mistakes in Menopause No Organized Plan [00:17:30] You either default to using what's available at the gym or doing the same exercises in the same sequence every time. If you're not careful you won't change the stimulus (by changing the sequence and sets/rep combination) and may also not be getting enough sets per muscle group in each week. It doesn't mean that all sets for a muscle group must be all the same exercise. A super set of 6 different exercises for the triceps works. The next workout you may just do 3 and you're still covered… if you planned it that way. Not Sleeping Enough or Not Changing the Workout When You Don't Sleep [00:20:50] The sleep you get will determine the benefit you get from exercise. If you don't prioritize, your workouts will suffer too. You're also at risk for injury, not only because your body isn't fully doing the repair job or releasing testosterone and growth hormone in deep cycles of sleep as it should, but because coordination suffers. Treating Soreness or Worn Out an Indication of “Good Workout” [00:22:40] When you work muscles, it's normal to feel sore, even if you're extremely fit. Some muscles like quads and glutes are used to a lot of activity and tend to get sore less often. But there are two genes associated with soreness and you may either be predisposed to be sore or not. It's not a good indication of whether you worked hard enough. If you reached muscle fatigue or came close, you gave the muscle enough stimulus. The first sign of poor recovery was soreness after workouts, the second was reduced performance during workouts. 12 Strength Training Mistakes in Menopause to Avoid and Nurture Your Body Dependence on Supplements and Negating Balanced Whole Food Meals. [00:27:00] If you're all too willing to jump to EAAs, or BCAAs but won't eat regular meals that result in satiety, chances are your lack of micro and macronutrients will catch up with you. “Food first”, then allow supplements to take you the rest of the way. I don't like to “count” calories on a regular basis but a snapshot is very helpful for checking in. Often for knowing when you're eating too little. Taking Too Much Advice (or Too Little From Too Many People) [00:30:20] It often takes even gurus a while to come around. You have to love Vonda Wright and Mary Haver sharing their own menopause journeys. We need more women like them. They're open about not knowing what they didn't know about menopause, as physicians and women. You have at your fingertips access to women who learned the hard way, so you don't have to. Just don't jump in the middle. You need an onramp. Ignoring Nutrition Needs. [00:32:30] The talk is “calorie deficit.” Yet, 80% of women in our community under-eat for their mere existence (resting metabolic rate) and then try to put their foot on the accelerator for exercise causing a bigger caloric deficit. Then they stay there for years, under-fed and under-fueled (processed food, diet food), the metabolism will come to a halt, along, potentially with adrenal and thyroid function. Figure your calorie needs. Use an app to track your actual intake for 3-5 days. 12 Strength Training Mistakes in Menopause That Hinder Your Progress Thinking Small, Skinny, or Numbers That Don't Matter Instead of That Do [00:36:20] Your size and your weight on the scale do not tell the story of your fitness and health. Though they might hint at your likelihood of sarcopenia and osteoporosis, fall and fracture risk. When women focus on weight or size they sacrifice muscle. When they lose muscle, they lose strength, longevity and independence. A woman who has her ideal weight or size is constantly thinking about it and a step away from a fall or fracture. A fracture that results in bedrest, weakness and loss of more muscle. The beginning of the end. Those falls are not devastating just because of the breaks, but because of brain bleeds or other internal damage. Too Heavy to Start [00:38:20] The first 6-8 weeks, and up to 12, of a resistance training program, the benefits are due to the neural connection. That isn't rushed by going heavy. But loads too great for your ligaments, tendons and joints or muscles can cause weakness, undue soreness, and a weak foundation leading to injury. We, in the fitness industry, need to be more careful. We have sometimes lost our way in regard to where to START, and how and at what pace to PROGRESS. You Add Something But Don't Remove Something Else [00:40:30] I've experienced this temptation myself. When I started training for triathlons at 40, I was compelled to figure out how to run even while I was adding biking or swimming to my schedule. I soon realized I was sabotaging the quality of every workout and just putting those “junk miles.” A woman will lose muscle because of the added stress, inability to recover. That's an extreme example, but if you're adding and never subtracting/replacing, you're probably going to experience similar results. Note from Lucas: I know some folks might have a difficult time with talking about Wendigo in fiction. I myself am Metis and the way it was discussed by elders was the Wendigo was a cautionary tale of anger, isolation, and pain. I tried to keep that in the spirit of the creature, but also reflect that at this point in the story they are fighting a boss fight designed in a video game, so there is a portion that is very gamified to it. I understand completely if this is an episode you'd like to skip. If you'd like to skip this episode but want to know what happens I am placing SPOILERS at the end of the show notes, so you have to scroll to see it. ************* Welcome to the Ballad of the Seven Dice. The party is now ready to at last confront the boss of Floor 1 alongside scores of other players! Will they take this creature down quickly or will they realize that Carcosa Online is one hell of a game! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED   The party heads into the forest with everyone, realizing that a winter has set over the woods. Akihiko asked Nysla about love as they head deeper in readying themselves.  They set off their plan to trap the boss in the fire trap and a bit of it goes wrong with Lune losing a portion of his people and wishing it was him instead. The party fights and the battle is brutal with scores upon scores of people perishing. The boss is piercing players on its antlers and when they are on there, they don't truly die. Akihiko is almost slain and Houndman takes the hit and is killed. Nysla almost dies from a number of attacks and is unconscious. Lune criticals two times in a row and at the last moment defeats the boss.  The party realizes they lost over 100 players in this battle and many dear friends. They are broken, battered, and scarred. This is the cost of victory.

Happy Valentine's Day from all of us here at GateCrashers! Join Patrick and Amanda as they talk about the queer romance anime given! Content Warning: this episode repeatedly references homophobia, depression, and suicide. given, released in 2019 and finally receiving an English dub in 2022, follows high schooler UENOYAMA Ritsuka, a guitar prodigy, as he meets fellow student SATŌ Mafuyu, who has a guitar but doesn't know the first thing about playing or maintaining the instrument. Their relationship quickly develops into something more, with Mafuyu even joining Ritsuka's band with college students NAKAYAMA Haruki, the bassist, and KAJI Akihiko, the drummer. Soon it is discovered that Mafuyu can sing, and feelings begin to develop between Mafuyu and Ritsuka. In this episode, Patrick and Amanda talk about how wholesome this story of young, queer love is, and how happy it makes them feel despite some of the more stressful, dramatic parts of the story. They discuss the English dubbed performances from some prolific anime voice actors, which ranks among some of the best dubbed performances. They discuss the dynamics of Mafuyu and Ritsuka's relationship, as well as the feelings developing between Haruki and Akihiko. The supporting cast is discussed including Ritsuka's sister and his friends, as well as Mafuyu's old friends from his previous school. The hosts discuss the importance of queer stories like given, and with Valentine's Day upon us, how nice it is to have stories that show the characters truly in love with each other. They also discuss how universal this story feels due to the manga and anime's use of shōnen-style characterizations despite it technically being a BL josei. So come join Amanda and Patrick as they jump into romance with the boys in the band! Warning! This episode contains spoilers for the first season of given and the corresponding issues of the manga.

This week the class dips into some good ole "Boys Love" or BL to celebrate Pride Month. Yes, we know this episode will air in July, we fucked up our release schedule, BUT back to the gay. This series was written and illustrated by Natsuki Kizu and aired during the summer of 2019 with a movie to follow in 2020. We mainly follow the story of Mafuyu and his journey to find his voice following the death of his boyfriend Yuki, whose guitar he carries with him every day. We meet the other band members Ritsuka, Haruki, and Akihiko who help Mafuyu on his journey. Kizu creates a world that feels lived in, and her characters seem real. It's a slow burn, yes, but it's also simple in a way that BL, or “Boys' Love,” isn't often depicted. Confessions aren't always explosive or volatile; sometimes, they're quiet realizations and clumsy kisses.

Shadon and The Subtle Doctor pick up  their mics once again to talk shop about Given, covering topics such as  the transition from show to movie format and what that entails, the  focus on Akihiko and Haruki over Uenoyama and Mafuyu, Ugetsu possibly  being a devourer of souls, cinematography and storyboarding, badly timed  phone calls and more! This bonus podcast is free for everyone to  enjoy. Read the full story with photos at: https://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/company/globalnews/2014/1118_01.html "Mr. Otsuka, you are a true friend of France," said Mr. Charles-Henri Brosseau, the Consul General of the French consulate in Kyoto, Japan, in fluent Japanese, to the late Chairman Akihiko Otsuka* on November 18 of last year. The occasion was a momentous ceremony held at the Rihga Royal Hotel in Osaka to present Mr. Otsuka with the Officer Order of the Legion of Honor on behalf of the President of France.   The Order of the Legion of Honor was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. It is France's highest award, and is bestowed in times of peace and war on military personnel and private citizens who have made great contributions to France in areas such as culture, science, industry, business, or creativity. Mr. Otsuka was awarded the Order for his work promoting the Japan-France relationship through his extensive business activities in France over many years. The ceremony consisted of an awards presentation speech by Mr. Charles-Henri Brosseau and then the actual presentation of the award, followed by an acceptance speech by Mr. Otsuka. Everyone present, including top Otsuka Group executives, offered Mr. Otsuka their heartfelt congratulations, and many congratulatory messages were sent to the ceremony by persons not in attendance. Otsuka Holdings President, Mr. Tatsuo Higuchi, opened the banquet that was held following the awards ceremony with a toast "To Chairman Otsuka, and the continued development of the Otsuka Group". Acceptance Speech by Chairman Akihiko Otsuka I am deeply honored to receive, from a representative of the President of France, France's highest award, the Officer Order of the Legion of Honor. I would like to express my sincerest thanks to you all. In our efforts to contribute to the better health of people worldwide, and to continue our evolution into an international total health care company, the Otsuka Group has been actively expanding our business in Europe. Specifically, most of our investments in Europe have been in France, which has become an important base of operations for the Otsuka Group. We feel that we have been rewarded for energetically pursuing new business opportunities in the field of medicine and foods and beverages while retaining our respect for and desire to learn from the traditions and culture of France, in our efforts to help the citizens of France realize the universal desire of people everywhere for improved health. Our business activities in France have played such a prominent role for the Otsuka Group thanks to the support and cooperation of many people, including the government of France, for which we are truly grateful. Thinking back on the history of our operations since their initiation in France to the present day, being chosen to receive this most honorable award fills me with emotion and gratitude. The Otsuka Group intends to continue working to promote creative business activities and to do our utmost to maintain and improve Japan's relationship with France. It is my sincere wish that we can all continue to work together to improve this relationship, and I look forward to your further guidance and encouragement in the future. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Today has been a great honor. Mr. Charles-Henri Brosseau's Introductory Remarks (excerpted) I am honored to stand before you today to present the Officer Order of the Legion of Honor to Mr. Akihiko Otsuka, a leading Japanese industrialist and international businessman – and a close friend of France. Mr. Otsuka's company was founded in 1921 in Tokushima, Japan, and is now one of the most prominent business groups in Japan in the fields of pharmaceuticals, nutrition, and cosmetics. Mr. Otsuka joined the company in 1960. After holding various positions at Otsuka Group companies, he became the President of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. in 1976, and in 2008 was appointed the Chairman and CEO of Otsuka Holdings. 2008 was an important year for the relationship between France and the Otsuka Group, as this was the year that Otsuka Pharmaceutical acquired Nutrition et Santé and Alma. The Otsuka Group has made considerable contributions to France's economy and has created many jobs in France. Thanks to Mr. Otsuka, the Otsuka Group has strengthened its French operations, and the Otsuka Group currently employs close to 2500 people in France and is among the leading Japanese investors in France. Otsuka Pharmaceutical's French subsidiary, which markets human pharmaceuticals in France, had only 10 employees when it was founded in 2004, but it now employs eight times that many. In 2006, Otsuka's Abilify received the Prix Galien award, which is given for the development of a pharmaceutical product with groundbreaking therapeutic efficacy. Nutrition et Santé, which was acquired by Otsuka Pharmaceutical in this same year, manufactures functional and nutritional food products. I would like to take this opportunity to once again praise the special relationship France has with the Otsuka Group, a relationship that has resulted in many past success stories, and one that I have no doubt will lead to many successes in the future as well. Mr. Otsuka, you are a true friend of France. This is evident from the Otsuka Group’s enthusiasm for participating in events held by the French Embassy. Otsuka Group senior management has made every effort to forge solid, high-level relationships with French government officials, including the French Ambassador to Japan and officials at the Invest In France Agency. Through the partnership the Otsuka Group has created with French industry, Mr. Otsuka has emphasized two things that the peoples of both of our countries have in common: finding value in work, and the enjoyment of life. The government of France would like to express its gratitude for all the hard work of every Otsuka employee, for your actions as the head of the company, and for the contributions that you have made to foster the relationship between our two countries. Mr. Otsuka, on behalf of the President of France, I hereby award you the Officer Order of the Legion of Honor.
