Abstract: The highly prevalent herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) causes keratoconjunctivitis and encephalitis. Viral DNA polymerase-inhibiting nucleoside analogs (such as acyclovir) are standard treatment agents against HSV infections but are limited by severe drug resistance issues. Thus, new antiviral agents with novel targets are urgently needed. Earlier, we investigated the anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial bioactivities of Garcinia sp. Here, we report that non-cytotoxic concentrations ( less than 500 nM) of Gaudichaudione H (GH, isolated from Garcinia oligantha Merr.) potently inhibits HSV-1 replication in vitro without affecting viral entry or attachment. GH inhibits the expression of the viral proteins ICP0, ICP4, and ICP27 without affecting their mRNA levels. In Vero cells, GH enhanced STAT1 and 3 phosphorylation, which occurs downstream to interferon (IFN)-{gamma} activation during viral infections. However, pharmacological/genetic inhibition of IFN-{gamma} failed to suppress the GH-mediated inhibition of HSV-1 replication, indicating that GH exerts antiviral effects independent of IFN. Further mechanistic studies suggest that GH inhibits HSV-1 replication, at least partially by inhibiting cellular NF-{kappa}B activation. Moreover, GH prolonged the survival rate of KOS-infected mice by 25% (n = 5). In conclusion, GH treatment inhibits HSV-1 replication both in vitro and in vivo; therefore, it can be developed as an antiviral. Copy rights belong to original authors. Tim Eccles is a drone pilot from Cape Town, South Africa, who had an interesting start in the drone world. He was gifted a drone in January 2018, but wasn't able to fly it at that time due to a bad battery. He let it sit for a while, but once getting it going he's been having a blast flying and selling his prints. Living near some beautiful beaches, Tim is almost exclusively taking photos at the beach and waterfront. Lately he's been experimenting with umbrellas and desaturating his photos. I find this is a great technique as it really lets the photo speak for itself, rather than relying on some crazy oversaturated colour. Hilariously enough, Tim has self declared himself as a terrible drone pilot! For that reason he sticks to photos and doesn't do much on the video side of things. If you're interested in learning how to get out of the "terrible drone pilot" side of things and learn how to fly with precision, be sure to check out my free drone training course. I'll get you and Tim going in no time at all! Even though Tim isn't flying commercially yet, he has some experience with instagram marketing. He recommends using a service called Social Info, that gives you hashtag recommendations. In addition to recommendations, it also shows how competitive each hashtag is. As he describes it, it's the instagram game! He's been selling his prints on his own so far, but after hearing both Merr Watson and Michael Brown talk about Riptide Prints, he's likely going to move his business over there. As fun as it is to shoot, print, and ship, it's also nice to have someone else take care of the back end of the business for you. Michael Brown is an Australia based drone pilot, who identified a need to help drone photographers get their work on walls around the world. Michael found that there are creators that are producing some excellent materials, but don't have an easy way to market, print, and ship their work around the world. His response? He created Riptide Prints! As I mention in the introduction to the show, this is a follow-up episode to my chat with Merr Watson in episode 42. Merr spoke positively about her interactions with Riptide Prints, and was a huge fan of taking 80% of the profit for herself. Seriously, 80% profit!

Merr Watson was born in the Philippines and moved to Perth about 8 years ago. She is a content creator, who is using her drone to capture stunning photos and videos at the beach. Merr was approached by Mike at Riptide Prints who offered her the opportunity to easily sell her prints online. Riptide takes care of all the printing, framing, and shipping, while still providing Merr the majority of the profit. Think she is a fan of that? YOU BET!

Isoflavonoid signal molecules from soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) seed and root exudate induce the transcription of nodulation (nod) genes in Bradyrhizobium japonicum. In this study, a new compound with symbiotic activity was isolated from soybean root exudate. The isolated 2',4',4-trihydroxychalcone (isoliquiritigenin) is characterized by its strong inducing activity for the nod genes of B. japonicum. These genes are already induced at concentrations 1 order of magnitude below those required of the previously described isoflavonoid inducers genistein and daidzein. Isoliquiritigenin is also a potent inducer of glyceollin resistance in B. japonicum, which renders this bacterium insensitive to potentially bactericidal concentrations of glyceollin, the phytoalexin of G. max. No chemotactic effect of isoliquiritigenin was observed. The highly efficient induction of nod genes and glyceollin resistance by isoliquiritigenin suggests the ecological significance of this compound, although it is not a major flavonoid constituent of the soybean root exudate in quantitative terms.
