In 1987 Oprah Winfrey read a book that changed her life. What happened to her as a result of reading that book, the unanticipated lesson she learned, remains fresh and urgent for her 38 years later. The book, by author Toni Morrison, was a novel called Beloved in which Morrison attempts to show what it was like to be a slave. What did slavery do to the enslaved person's inner life, to their psyche, to their soul? How did slavery shape not only the enslaved person, but also their descendants—even when slavery was over? When Oprah Winfrey first read the novel, she fell in love with it. She just knew that she had to make a movie based on this book. Toni Morrison had never allowed any of her novels to be made into a film, but the author succumbed to the charms and persuasive powers of Oprah Winfrey.Oprah worked on the film Beloved for more than ten years. She herself played the lead. She used her power and influence to get the film made. The film was 3 hours long, was intense, hard, and sad—and did not have a happy ending. How did the film do? Alan Stone, a professor of law and psychiatry at Harvard Law School at the time, saw the film in Harvard Square when it first opened. He wrote:Ten minutes into the film, I began to hear audible groans from my two companions, who subsequently predicted Beloved's demise at the box office. They hated the film: they could not follow it…Baffled by the narrative…they like most filmgoers, missed the experience that Oprah wanted them to have.Alan Stone's friends would prove prophetic. The film cost 80 million dollars to make. It took in 22 million dollars at the box office. The first weekend it came out, even with Oprah's star power, the film was beaten at the box office by a horror movie called The Bride of Chucky. It took ten years to make. It was pulled from the theatres after four weeks.Oprah had been completely invested in this project. She worked on it for more than ten years. She believed in it. She really cared. And after all that personal care and investment, her beloved film Beloved did not land. The failure of her film devastated Oprah. When she learned that Beloved got beat at the box office by Chucky, she shared that stayed home and ate a prodigious amount of macaroni and cheese, and she experienced a major depression. She observed: “It was the only time in my life that I was ever depressed, and I recognized that I was depressed because I've done enough shows on the topic. ‘O, this is what people must feel like who are depressed.'All of which happened in 1998. Why am I bringing it up now?Author John Maxwell observed that life's greatest lessons always come from our failures, not from our successes. The more painful our failure, the more important it is to extract a life-enhancing lesson from that failure. That is just what Oprah did.

The Tangent - 104: Only The Best For Astronauts We're down a man this week, as Gary couldn't make it. R.I.P. No big deal, we've got some games to talk about. Anthony's up first, and is still playing Nioh. He's level 92, but still finds himself under leveled for the last boss, so he's replaying missions to get to 122. Brutal. He also went back to Pokemon Go, as Nintendo added more Pokemon, drawing from the Gold & Silver-era. However, Great Balls continues to remain useless. Justin, for our Let's Play, played Titan Souls, an 8-bit pixel art game that consists only of boss fights. His only game this week. Stephen and Brian then have a nice chat about Chameleon Run. Still pretty blown away from this surprise hit. Finally, Brian, played Adrift. It's a first-person experience game. You're an astronaut on a broken space station trying to collect oxygen for your damaged spacesuit. Headphones on for Brian with this one. The Drunken News this week lacks Nintendo Switch news as we're mere days away from launch, but does contain some down notes. We've got Xbox Live Games for Gold, AMD's new Ryzen processor, lost SNES games found, the BioShock creator with a new studio, Blizzard MMOs, Twitch Streamer found dead after 24-hour stream, and Nintendo of America's Co-Founder, Alan Stone, passes away.     The Drunken Show Notes: Xbox Live Games With Gold For March 2017 Blizzard Worked on 2 Separate MMOs After Titan Cancellation Twitch Streamer Found Dead During 24-Hour Charity Livestream Alan Stone, Co-Founder of Nintendo of America, Passes Away at Age 71 AMD Launches Ryzen: 52% More IPC, Eight Cores for Under $330, Pre-order Today, On Sale March 2nd $10k SNES game package lost in the post has been found BioShock Creator Ken Levine Reveals New Game Development Studio Extras Creep us on Facebook Stalk us on Twitter Watch us on YouTube Or throw us that review on iTunes or Stitcher Questions, comments, concerns? Michelle McGrath is the Executive Director of the United States Association of Cider Makers, a trade association for the cider industry. In this episode she chats on the mission of the USACM, the goals for the year, the upcoming Cider Conference (CiderCon) and the Pick Cider initiative for Thanksgiving. The four core mandates of the Association Advance cider in the market Increase opportunities for peer learning Promoting a cider friendly regulatory environment Supporting the cider apple growers   The USACM has over 1300 members. 95% of cidery members are making less than 500,000 gallons/year Membership in the USACM is tiered. For instances, The Cidery In Planning is $175. And there is even a tier level for "Home Cidermaker/Enthusiast" - $75.00 (USD) Find out more info at http://www.ciderassociation.org/join Michelle provided an overview of the Cider Act that comes into effect in 2017 It will increase the allowable carbonation in cider Increase the allowable alcohol content from 7% to 8.5% Perry will now fall under the definition of allowable cider. And, there is a change in the Bond requirement for small cider producers, if not all alcohol producers. If you owe less than $50,000 a year in taxes, the government is going to stop requiring a Bond. If you already have a Bond, will get it back. BUT YOU have to request your Bond back and prove that you are a small producer.   Michelle also discussed: The Craft Beverage Modernization Act that is still yet to be passed. Within this ACT there is a component that benefits small wineries. It expands the small producers tax credit. Right now the credit is available to producers of 150,000 gallons or less and will up that amount up 750,000 gallons or 3/4 of a million. And, there will be a Request for Proposals (RFP) for research grants coming up in 2017 too. What is happening with CiderCon? Where is it? It takes place on February 8th, 9th and 10th in Chicago. Here is a sneak peak into this year's special guests from France! In this episode of Strategic Investor Radio, host Charley Wright interviews Alan Stone of Wall Street Research. Mr. Stone’s firm, which is headquartered in Los Angeles, publishes newsletters and reports focused on small- and micro-cap stocks. These stocks may trade on major exchanges or over-the-counter, or they may be entirely private. Mr. Stone graduated from Wharton, where he studied economics and finance. He had a notable career on Wall Street before relocating to Los Angeles more than a quarter-century ago, which is when he purchased the then-fifteen-year-old Wall Street Research brand from its original owner. Stone repurposed the newsletter as an online publication, and twenty-five years later, his site – WallStreetResearch.org – is the top listing for the popular Google search “Wall Street research.”

A few days ago I was able to corner Jamey Stegmaier into doing a podcast with me. The transcription of the interview is below and you can always subscribe to iTunes and listen to the podcast there.  In this awesome episode, Jamie and I talk about Between Two Cities, which should launch on Kickstarter on February 25th.  We also talk about Viticulture and the cock jokes that can be made because of the rooster tokens, and then we discuss the Tuscany tile misprint and whether Jamey lost any sleep over that.  We also touch on the topic of board games being a great tool that introverts can use to connect with other people and how board games can be used either during or as a part of therapy. RICHARD:        This is Richard Miles with Board Game Authority and today I have the privilege of talking with... JAMEY:          Jamey Stegmaier of Stonemaier Games. RICHARD:        Alright, well let's jump into some Stonemaier Games news. In 2015 it seems like we will see at least two games from Stonemaier Games. We’ll see ‘Between Two Cities’ and ‘Scythe.’ Let's talk about ‘Between Two Cities.’ JAMEY:          Yeah. RICHARD:        This game will actually come out before ‘Scythe’ but I haven't seen as much hype surrounding it. Have you seen a difference as well from ‘Between Two Cities’ and ‘Scythe’ and why do you think that would be? JAMEY:          Well, yeah they're very different games. I mean I wish ‘Between Two Cities’ would have gotten as much attention and excitement as ‘Scythe’. But, and part of it is that we didn't have art for ‘Between Two Cities’ until fairly recently and it was on the Board Game Geek list for like games people are most excited about in 2015 and it's near the, at least it was nominations, it is near the top of that list. It was definitely in the top 20 and that vote is currently happening. So, my sense is that a lot of people are excited about it. It's just not, like it's a gateway game so it's like getting super, super excited about ‘Settlers of Catan’ when it came out. Like it might end up being a game that hits the table all the time but you're going to get more excited about the Star Wars Imperial Assault game, even if you don't buy it because it's so expensive you know. So I'm kind of putting it in that category, you know, of excitement and hype. This is the first game that we're publishing that wasn't designed by me, basically, right? RICHARD:        And do you think that has anything to do with the hype or lack thereof? JAMEY:          No I don't. I mean that's a good question and it was my concern. Like one of the major discussions we had early on was… So the designers are Ben Rosset and Matthew O’Malley. They're both talented designers and they have a few games published and I knew going into it that I would be developing the game which was essentially like, you know, the designers design the game and the developer comes in and hones the game and helps balance and makes it better, makes every element of it interesting and fun. At least that's the goal right?  So, one of the discussions we had early on was: should my name go on the box as like ‘Developed by Jamey Stegmaier’? And so we had a big debate about it. And the only reason… and that may sound egotistical.  Ego wise I don't care at all about having my name on the box but I thought if it helped sell it to our followers, the Stonemaier followers, if that would help then I would put it on there. What we ended up determining was that that probably wouldn't matter. Like all the people who already follow us, I could directly tell them through the Kickstarter page or through my e-newsletter that I was involved in the process and that I didn't need to put my name on the box to ensure that that was communicated. RICHARD:        Since this will be the first game that is just kind of published by Stonemaire Games, that's not a Jamey Stegmaier and Alan Stone game. Do you feel this is pivotal to the future and the success of Stonemai...
