If you store vegetables for any length of time, you're going to want to hear this interview with Sam Knapp of Offbeet Farm. Sam has practiced “storage farming” for years, growing during the summer for off-season sales from stored crops deep into the winter. In this interview, he tells us about how he figured out his own best practices along the way, as there was little available information on modern veg storage techniques that would keep produce in top shape over an extended period of time. The product of all this learning is Sam's brand-new book, Beyond the Root Cellar. It covers every aspect of storage farming, from which crops to grow for storage, to how to grow and harvest them, to what kind of a structure to build for long-term storage and the conditions that will keep vegetables fresh for as long as possible. We cover a lot of it in this interview, though for all the details, you can order Beyond the Root Cellar, which is now shipping from Growing for Market; magazine subscribers always get 20% off all books, including Beyond the Root Cellar. Connect With Guest:Sam's book Beyond the Root Cellar: https://growingformarket.com/store/products/264Website: https://offbeetalaska.comInstagram: @offbeetalaska Podcast Sponsors:Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support: There are a lot of farm sales platforms out there, but there's only one that's cooperatively owned by farmers. That's GrownBy — your all-in-one solution to simplify farm sales. Today's poem is by Theodore Huebner Roethke (/ˈrɛtki/ RET-kee;[1] May 25, 1908 – August 1, 1963), an American poet. He is regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential poets of his generation, having won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1954 for his book The Waking, and the annual National Book Award for Poetry on two occasions: in 1959 for Words for the Wind,[2] and posthumously in 1965 for The Far Field.[3][4] His work was characterized by its introspection, rhythm and natural imagery.Roethke was praised by former U.S. Poet Laureate and author James Dickey as "in my opinion the greatest poet this country has yet produced."[5] He was also a respected poetry teacher, and taught at the University of Washington for fifteen years. His students from that period won two Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry and two others were nominated for the award. "He was probably the best poetry-writing teacher ever," said poet Richard Hugo, who studied under Roethke.— bio via Wikipedia Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Kyle Mylius fell in love with the restaurant business while working as a corporate service trainer. "I may have been a terrible college student, but I was wonderful at working with people,” he says, adding, “I enjoyed hospitality right away because it required teaching and serving." He went on to manage an independent coffeehouse and help its owners expand the concept with two additional units. At that point, Kyle knew restaurant ownership was to be his future. Learn how Kyle, in 2005 armed with only $10,000 and ambition, took over the basement of a beautiful historic building in downtown New Braunfels, Texas, with his business partner. There they created the Root Cellar, a casual café furnished with items collected at garage sales, displaying artwork by local artists, and featuring live entertainment by local musicians. Kyle describes the seasonal menu as "American favorites with a twist."  After 17 years in business, Root Cellar continues to enjoy a strong connection with the community and led the way to the development of two other successful concepts - Tin Top Burgers and Rhea's Ice Cream, with two units. Today, says Kyle, "I see my role as providing support to the units. Providing growth for key staff is critical for expansion in today's market and allowing a sense of ownership among management helps them better focus on the business.” With Tin Top Burgers and two Rhea's Ice Cream parlors operating in the same locale as Root Cellar, Kyle set his sights on expanding into the neighboring community of Gruene, Texas. In 2018, he opened the Gruene Grove bar, along with a third Rhea's Ice Cream. His future includes plans for continued business growth in the markets he knows.  Says Kyle: “Community matters. Not everything may work everywhere, so I recommend you stay where you are known and accepted."

We had to assemble the unit and figure out how to use it, we were so excited that after nearly 2 years we were back with the proper equipment to hopefully discover the location of the infamous root cellar. We wanted to try out the unit, and Hadden's descriptions all said the root cellar is about 5 to 6 feet deep so we decided a graveyard was the best place to experiment. We found one of Wellfleet's oldest graveyards and waited until late afternoon when there wouldn't be anyone there. It was desolate and creepy, but using the GPR over graves gave us a pretty good indication as to what the root cellar would look like.We retrace our earlier steps and spend 4 days formulating grids and soil slices. During these 4 days we were on the phone with experts in the field of GPR.  We had sent so many videos and images and had so many false alarms that we were getting discouraged. Finally on the 4th day we find an area that is as Hadden described it, and it is at a depth that makes sense. At this point we are pretty sure this is it, so we sent all the new images to Hans and waited to hopefully hear some positive news.We finally got the call we had been waiting for, Hans said, “after looking at your notes and the data from the GPR I'm sure you guys found what you were looking for.” It was music to our ears. After over two years, two trips to Cape Cod, and a whole lot of time, work and expense we finally found Hadden's secret Root cellar. It was late in the day and the sun was going down. The fact that we were standing over the root cellar made the excitement almost unbearable, but at the same time foreboding.

He was excited that we found all the clues and was acting vindicated because we had grilled him so much on whether the root cellar really existed. Once again he never changes his story. He verifies the root cellar was right in the area where we had searched.  Hadden again verifies that we will find information on many cases including Bonnie Bickwit and Mitch Weisner, the Race Point Victim Lady of the Dunes, Sarah Pryor and Doreen Vincent.Hadden Clark's story is always consistent, The Root Cellar exits and we were in the exact area that it's located. Tony, Al and Joey realize they can't give up until they find it!

What starts as a playful afternoon down at the swimming hole (minus the two young peeping Toms) turns into a family nightmare when a local girl drowns. Eloise Taylor, the young girl's mother, is distraught with grief and lashes out at everyone around here, including Laura, whom Eloise Taylor directly blames for her daughter's death. Not even the silly hijinks of Jonathan Garvey can help lighten the mood. However, with a little time ( a day or two) Laura decides on a random act of kindness and stops by the Taylor house. And once inside the house, Eloise starts to have visions of her daughter back from the dead...only dressed in Laura's clothes. Not only that, Eloise manages to abduct Laura leaving her stranded in the Root Cellar. When Laura's absences is noticed all eyes turn to Bubsy, a local recluse, who happens to somehow be in possession of Laura's belongings. Eventually, he is apprehended and questioned by Charles, Jonathan and the men of Walnut Grove but all of this leads nowhere. In a strange twist of fate, Harriet Oleson is the one who saves the day by spilling the T about what Eloise Taylor said and did when visiting the Mercantile earlier. Will the residents of Walnut Grove find a new swimming spot? Who is Busby and why does Walnut Grove seem to know all about him? Considering how well Eloise and Cal can hit their targets, Would Ellen have been a sharp-shooter as well?

I can remember having a root cellar when I was little. They were cold, damp, mysterious places, near the end of modern usefulness. But lately, I've been thinking about the freedom of root cellars and many other things we've lost. Reading Lara Ingalls Wilder's Farmboy, it is remarkable how resourceful and independent people that lived not really that long ago were. The hub of their year around nourishment and self-sufficiency, the root cellar. Talk about self-sufficiency. All this talk of modern homesteading, solar panels, generators, etc. and all you really need is a water source and a root cellar. Technology can enslave us, but it can give us access to so much knowledge to truly live free using the best of the old and the new.

Michelle McGrath is the Executive Director of the United States Association of Cider Makers, a trade association for the cider industry. In this episode she chats on the mission of the USACM, the goals for the year, the upcoming Cider Conference (CiderCon) and the Pick Cider initiative for Thanksgiving. The four core mandates of the Association Advance cider in the market Increase opportunities for peer learning Promoting a cider friendly regulatory environment Supporting the cider apple growers   The USACM has over 1300 members. 95% of cidery members are making less than 500,000 gallons/year Membership in the USACM is tiered. For instances, The Cidery In Planning is $175. And there is even a tier level for "Home Cidermaker/Enthusiast" - $75.00 (USD) Find out more info at http://www.ciderassociation.org/join Michelle provided an overview of the Cider Act that comes into effect in 2017 It will increase the allowable carbonation in cider Increase the allowable alcohol content from 7% to 8.5% Perry will now fall under the definition of allowable cider. And, there is a change in the Bond requirement for small cider producers, if not all alcohol producers. If you owe less than $50,000 a year in taxes, the government is going to stop requiring a Bond. If you already have a Bond, will get it back. BUT YOU have to request your Bond back and prove that you are a small producer.   Michelle also discussed: The Craft Beverage Modernization Act that is still yet to be passed. Within this ACT there is a component that benefits small wineries. It expands the small producers tax credit. Right now the credit is available to producers of 150,000 gallons or less and will up that amount up 750,000 gallons or 3/4 of a million. And, there will be a Request for Proposals (RFP) for research grants coming up in 2017 too. What is happening with CiderCon? Where is it? It takes place on February 8th, 9th and 10th in Chicago. Here is a sneak peak into this year's special guests from France!
