This week on the Five Minute Advocate, Dr Michael Walker explores a notion posed by former undercover CIA counter-terrorism officer Amaryllis Fox - that everyone believes that they are the good guy.  With this idea at the forefront, Dr Walker examines the immensely divided and often obstinate state we find ourselves in throughout our socio-political and socio-economic landscapes and emphasises the need for us to truly listen to people with different views rather than dismissing them with one liners. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Around the same time, Jack the Ripper famously killed at least five people on the streets of London. On The American Ripper series, Jeff Mudgett -- Holmes' great-great-grandson -- tries to prove a controversial theory that Holmes and Jack the Ripper were the same person. Mudgett has spent 20 years researching his ancestor, and he uses that information, combined with 21st-century science and technology, to team with former CIA analyst Amaryllis Fox to launch an investigation that could solve one of history's biggest cold cases.

Episode 164 - Amaryllis Fox. Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Amaryllis Fox. Following her CIA career in the field, AMARYLLIS FOX has covered current events and offered analysis for CNN, National Geographic, Al Jazeera, the BBC, and other global news outlets. She speaks at events and universities around the world on the topic of peacemaking. She is the cohost of History's TV series American Ripper and lives in Los Angeles, California, with her husband and daughter. Amaryllis Fox was in her last year as an undergraduate at Oxford studying theology and international law when her writing mentor Daniel Pearl was captured and beheaded. Galvanized by this brutality, Fox applied to a master's program in conflict and terrorism at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service, where she created an algorithm that predicted, with uncanny certainty, the likelihood of a terrorist cell rising in any village around the world. At twenty-one, she was recruited by the CIA. Her first assignment was reading and analyzing hundreds of classified cables a day from foreign governments and synthesizing them into daily briefs for the president. Her next assignment was at the Iraq desk in the Counterterrorism center. At twenty-two, she was fast-tracked into advanced operations training, sent from Langley to "the Farm," where she lived for six months in a simulated world learning how to use a Glock, how to get out of flexicuffs while locked in the trunk of a car, how to withstand torture, and the best ways to commit suicide in case of captivity. At the end of this training she was deployed as a spy under non-official cover--the most difficult and coveted job in the field as an art dealer specializing in tribal and indigenous art and sent to infiltrate terrorist networks in remote areas of the Middle East and Asia. And what do coverage of cocaine cartels and MLB have in common? Samantha Housman dreamed of making John Hughes type of films for her generation. That wish took her on a journey west to Los Angeles when she was 16 years old. She came solo and without knowing a single soul in the business. The City of Angels quickly became her playground and it was by juggling a job a record store and playing the drums that she found her in to the business. When a golden opportunity to be a drummer in commercials came knocking, she answered. The set experience exposed her to producers. A spark went off and she knew she had found her path. Sam’s film education came on the job as an Independent Producer, Post Supervisor, Assistant Director and UPM. She has a detailed understanding of filmmaking at its most molecular level. Over a decade later, she is now a producer at 51 Entertainment, a platform agnostic filmmaker-driven production company, founded by Lynette Howell Taylor. When she saw the kind of producer Lynette was, she knew she’d to anything to work with her. It’s impressive that Sam did and now works with her everyday. Most recently, she produced the film WANDER DARKLY, written and directed by Tara Miele and starring Sienna Miller and Diego Luna, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in U.S. Dramatic Competition. Under the 51 Entertainment banner, Sam is Executive Producing Apple’s straight-to-series female-focused CIA drama based on Amaryllis Fox’s memoir, starring and additionally executive produced by Academy Award winner Brie Larson. Sam will also produce LADY BUSINESS, alongside Brie, who is also set to star, for Netflix after optioning the original article with Endeavor Content.  In 2018, Sam produced 6 BALLOONS, a Netflix original feature, written and directed by longtime collaborator Marja-Lewis Ryan. Based on Sam and her brother, the film tells the story a woman driving across LA with her heroin addict brother in search of a detox center, with his two year old daughter in tow. It's a beautiful indie that I highly recommend. Before that, Sam co-founded ONEZERO Films where she Co-Produced CAPTAIN FANTASTIC, written and directed by Matt Ross, starring Viggo Mortensen. The film won the Best Director prize in CANNES UN CERTAIN REGARD. She also produced Matt Ross' 28 HOTEL ROOMS, which premiered at Sundance in 2012. Sam’s other producing credits while at ONEZERO include Noah Buschel’s SPARROW’S DANCE which Indiewire named one of the best films of the year in 2012, GLASS CHIN staring Corey Stoll and Billy Crudup, RIDE written and directed by Helen Hunt, and Chris Messina’s ALEX OF VENICE. Sam served as Vice President at Campfire, a film and television production company with a multi picture deal at Netflix. There she Executive Produced 1922, based on a Stephen King novella, SILICON COWBOYS, which made its premiere at SXSW; and oversaw production of several other titles. While she’s been at it for many years, in many ways she’s still just getting started. I think John Hughes would be proud of the work she’s creating. And I’m not just saying that because she complimented my Marianne bangs lewk inspired by Hulu's NORMAL PEOPLE. Tune in as we discuss my bangs, courage, vanity credits, and breakdown the post coordinator role. Can’t wait to hear what you think of this week’s episode! Beijos, Caca

Amaryllis was fast on track to become an established journalist when her mentor was kidnapped and killed by a terrorist group. She decided she had to give up the transparency of journalism if she wanted to truly help curb terror, and instead joined the shadow world of the CIA. But the shadow world had its own cost.  Snap presents, "The Lamb, the Lion, and the Fox." A big thanks to Amaryllis Fox. You can buy her book on Knopf, Amazon, or anywhere books are sold.  Produced by Nikka Singh, original score by Leon Morimoto Season 10, Episode 31

Presenter: Tina Daheley Producer: Kirsty Starkey According to Freedom of Information requests made by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism almost 700 cases of alleged domestic abuse involving police officers and staff were reported in the three years to April 2018. An official “super-complaint” is to be launched and central to that are at least 12 cases where women have made allegations of domestic abuse and sexual violence against an officer, only for the case to be dropped and, on occasion, for the alleged victim to be arrested and intimidated. We’ll hear from Harriet Wistrich lawyer and founding director of the Centre for Women’s Justice who are bringing the complaint and two female Police officers, one serving and one former, who are bringing a claim against Gwent Police. Jann Haworth is the co-creator of The Beatles' iconic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover. Regarded as one of the leading figures of the British Pop Art movement she was also seen as a pioneer in the face of the 1960’s American feminist movements. Creator of soft sculpture, she is an advocate for the representation of women in the art world and talks to Tina about her current exhibition at Pallant Gallery in Chichester. Amaryllis Fox was just 21 when she was recruited by the CIA. Posing as an art dealer she infiltrated terrorist networks in the Middle East and Asia. She’s written a memoir ‘Life Undercover’ about her career with the CIA and joins Tina to discuss. Interviewed Guest: Harriet Wistrich Interviewed Guest: Jann Haworth Interviewed Guest: Amaryllis Fox

Herman Mudgett, whose alias was H.H. Holmes, is believed to have been the first serial killer in America, potentially responsible for as many as 200 murders in the late 19th century. Around the same time, Jack the Ripper famously killed at least five people on the streets of London. In this series, Jeff Mudgett -- Holmes' great-great-grandson -- tries to prove a controversial theory that Holmes and Jack the Ripper were the same person. Mudgett has spent 20 years researching his ancestor, and he uses that information, combined with 21st-century science and technology, to team with former CIA analyst Amaryllis Fox to launch an investigation that could solve one of history's biggest cold cases.
