What does it mean to prepare for death with dignity — even from behind bars? In this deeply moving episode, Claire O’Berry speaks with Murali Pacini, former director of the Prison Project, about two remarkable men — James and Miguel — who spent their final years on Texas Death Row immersed in spiritual practice. Through meditation, community with like minded inmates, and unwavering commitment to transformation, these men faced their final moments not with fear, but with peace. You'll hear: How the Prison Project brought meditation to thousands of inmates worldwide The final letters exchanged between each man and their spiritual teacher Miguel’s last words, witnessed by those who sat with him James’ poetic statement of oneness moments before execution Reflections on what we can do to live more consciously and die more gracefully This episode is not about capital punishment — it’s about what’s possible when a soul prepares and turns inward. People use language to express themselves, but do you ever wonder how other animals communicate with each other? If they don't speak like us, how do they convey information? In our first Animal Talk episode we learned about the complex ways animals communicate, and how some species even have their own languages and dialects. In “Paw 2” we find out even more about the amazing world of animal talk, and about the science behind linguistic development in animals. Evan interviews Dr. Irene Pepperberg, research professor at Boston University in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences about her groundbreaking work with Alex the African Grey Parrot. Dr. Pepperberg worked with Alex for 30 years and taught him over 100 English words. Not only was Alex able to communicate with humans, he even asked what color he was when looking at himself in the mirror, becoming the first known non-human to ask a question! A silent danger lurks within the descending thoracic aorta. While most Type B aortic dissections are managed medically, up to half of these patients will either require life-saving surgery or die within just five years. So how do we separate those who will quietly recover from those on the edge of catastrophe? How do we protect the spinal cord, bowel, and limbs from the devastating consequences of malperfusion? Join the University of Michigan Department of Vascular Surgery as they tackle the high-stakes decisions behind managing this unpredictable disease—where timing is critical, interventions are evolving, and lives hang in the balance. Hosted by the University of Michigan Department of Vascular Surgery: ·       Robert Beaulieu, Program Director ·       Frank Davis, Assistant Professor of Surgery ·       Luciano Delbono, PGY-5 House Officer ·       Andrew Huang, PGY-4 House Officer ·       Carolyn Judge, PGY-2 House Officer Learning Objectives: 1.         Discuss general approach to diagnosis and management of TBAD. 2.         Identifying high-risk features in uncomplicated TBAD and understanding their role in determining the need for surgical management. 3.         Review endovascular techniques for managing malperfusion of the limbs, viscera, and spinal cord and discuss associated decision making. Dr. Ross Pacini is a cardiologist practicing in and around Lincoln, Nebraska. We talked about the intersection of knowledge and humility, and the importance of both for an excellent doctor. Dr. Pacini shared how he demonstrates his faith into interactions with both patients and coworkers - like several others in this series, needing to SHOW Christ much more often than he is able to SHARE Christ. The real highlight of our conversation centered around the relationship between science and religion. I really enjoyed this conversation and I think you will too! Masculinity has become a taboo topic in recent years, often being associated with sexism and misogyny. In this episode Ben Pacini, author of “The Case for Heroic Masculinity” and professor at BYU-Idaho, joins us to discuss the need for healthy masculinity in today's society. What that looks like in different families, communities, and organizations may differ, but will ultimately benefit the whole for years to come. “The Case for Heroic Masculinity” by Ben Pacini The Power of Community in Pornography Recovery: Download Relay and try it out for free, or learn more at Relay's website.
