In today's conversation, the last in our Women in Theology series, we catch up with Regent's own Library Director and Professor of the History of Christianity, Dr. Cindy Aalders. Cindy has recently published her thesis as a monograph, The Spiritual Lives and Manuscript Cultures of Eighteenth-Century Women (2024). In this conversation, we delve into the archives and lives of Methodist, Baptist and Anglican women in the eighteenth century, seeking to understand their friendship, kinship and spiritual development as demonstrated in their letter-writing and diary entries. Cindy's work highlights the significant impact of women in relational spheres and religious communities. These women invested deeply in intergenerational friendships and spiritual kinship as they sought to be faithful to God. Cindy reminds us that we can learn much from them today as we strive to support one another in an increasingly isolated world. Cindy also shares her upcoming summer class, Children and Spiritual Identity (June 30–July 4).BioDr. Cindy Aalders is the Director of the John Richard Allison Library and Associate Professor of the History of Christianity at Regent College. She earned a Bachelor of Science from The King's University, a Master of Christian Studies and a Master of Theology in Spiritual Theology from Regent College. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy in History at the University of Oxford in 2014, focusing her research on eighteenth-century British women's spiritual lives and manuscript cultures. Cindy's doctoral thesis, The Spiritual Lives and Manuscript Cultures of Eighteenth-Century English Women, was recently released by Oxford University Press. She has just returned to Regent from research leave, where she focused on girlhood and religious life in the long eighteenth century, digging through various archives in the process!Cindy's PublicationsThe Spiritual Lives and Manuscript Cultures of Eighteenth-Century Women (2024)To Express the Ineffable: The Hymns and Spirituality of Anne Steele (2009)Previous Podcast AppearancesChild Centred Theology and the Spiritual Formation of Children in the 18th CenturyCalled to Be Friends (with Dr. David Robinson)Friendship Recentred (with Dr. Maxine Hancock)Puritan Treasures (with Jenny-lyn de Klerk)Regent College Podcast Thanks for listening. In the last 20 years there has been a resurgence of interest in Anne. One of the best studies is called “To Express the Ineffable: the hymns and spirituality of Anne Steele” by Cynthia Aalders. It was published by Paternoster Press in 2008 as part of a series on Baptist history and thought. There are many useful books in that list. But I often find these kind of studies to be out of touch both historically and religiously with their subject as well as being too technical. But this book had none of those defects and was a delight to read. Aalders gives a short life of Steele and wisely references J. R. Broome's detailed biography. She follows this with chapters on various themes in Steele's poetry and identifies several that I'd like to show you. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cbtseminary/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cbtseminary/support

But this was to be a time of grief, not joy, because mother Anne died of childbirth complications and Thomas followed her to the grave a few weeks later. We often desire that our lives be lived without pain or discomfort. When it comes to us, is our reaction to rail against and question God for those trials? Anne Steele's life was one that had significant pain and loss. She poured out her grief in her hymns and poems and remained steadfast in her faith in her heavenly Father. One such hymn that can buoy us up in time of trial is this one, Father, Whate'er of Earthly Bliss, even expressing to the point of being free of murmuring. Paul encourages us in II Corinthians 1:3,4 that we are able to comfort one another with the comfort our God and Father gives us. Anne Steele saw that and lived it and passed it along in her hymnody. Has the Covid-19 pandemic cut into your vacation plans? It seems like everyone’s travel plans have changed over the past year. But what does that mean for employees and companies? Anne Steele and Chip Cutter examine the effects of Covid-19 and vacation taking in a recent Wall Street Journal article that we’ll look at today.  In addition to our Retirement Headline, I’ll answer two listener questions. One is about Medicare before age 65 and the other about investing in bonds. Grab your favorite listening device and join me to help you get retirement ready. Outline of This Episode [1:22] Many people aren’t taking time off right now [6:10] Will Rich’s wife qualify for Medicare after he retires? [10:28] Should we own bonds with these low interest rates? Working too much decreases productivity We have discussed the importance of taking vacations on Retirement Starts Today before. And if you have listened in the past you know that vacations actually increase worker productivity and boost morale. However, this past year, the Covid-19 pandemic has changed most people’s travel plans. Many have decided to postpone taking their vacation days until a time when they can travel more. But with the stress over the pandemic and the changes brought about by working from home, people should be taking time off now more than ever. Companies are becoming increasingly concerned about employee’s lack of vacation time Whether it is because people feel like they can’t or shouldn’t take vacation time right now, companies are becoming increasingly concerned. However, different companies are taking different approaches to the issue. Some are relaxing their vacation policies and allowing the vacation time to roll over while others are forcing their employees to use the time now to try and fend off burnout. Have you used your vacation time over the past year? Vacations are even more important in the lead up to retirement As you approach retirement, it is even more important to take those vacation days. The free time that vacation days offer you an opportunity to explore and practice what you will be doing in retirement. If you have postponed your vacation, consider taking a staycation to practice for retirement. Take this time to explore new hobbies and act out what you would do during your retirement.  In retirement, every day is Saturday! Happy New Year to everyone. I know we're half way through January but I was a little slow off the mark this year. The January 2021 edition of UP! blends a mix of new tracks with some classics thrown in for good measure. The set kicks off with Kylie's new track "Real Groove" mixed by the very talented DJ Argonaut from Melbourne. Melanie C and Tones And I follow up with their current hits and it's great to see Cosmic Dawn back with a signature mix of "Save Your Tears" by The Weeknd. As the set moves into a more progressive house sound, Russ Rich & Andy Allder deliver a standout mix of Taylor Swift's new track "Evermore" as does Wayne G. on "Without You Tonight" by Anne Steele. The set eases into a big room sound with remixes from Dirty Disco & Dario Xavier and then plants its feet firmly in big room territory with remixes from Nick Stracener, Enrico Meloni and Toy Armada & DJ GRIND on new tracks from Miley Cyrus, Sagi Kariv and Sia. Welcome to 2021 everyone. Lets' hope things improve from here on. Anne is a noted vocalist who has traveled the world to sing and is currently doing on line concerts to fundraise for City Harvest. On this episode we discuss how they first met and Anne coming out as “Lesbi Anne.” Kelli says,  “She was funny and she was smart and all the things that are way more important to me than look she's beautiful and talented that's amazing, but smart and funny are way up in the list” Stephen asks them his favorite question, “Who Said I Love you first?” and the joys of blending a family while going on a family cruise. (it includes a lot of making out in the hallway) .  Check out their feature in the NY TIMES from their wedding. Anne's performing life has been an amazing journey from restaurant row's Don't Tell Mama to major cruises, she's made a name for herself, and Kelli has helped her do it.   They're so loving to each other and to their four kids we ask them for ways to combat racism and homophobia. And now... for something completely similar...   This week, Brendan and Jason get prim and proper for the 2008 mini-series adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. The guys get right into it with some fairly problematic comments from the show's writer, analyze the inclusion of Anne Steele (and are bewildered at her accent), question the stereotypically "manly" scenes and much more.   Next week: Original plans be damned! First Impressions: Why All the Austen Haters Are Wrong

Welcome back, First Impressions fans, to our discussion of Austen's triumphant novel, Sense and Sensibility! In this episode, after excoriating Willoughby just as much as he deserves, Kristin and Maggie move on to the lighter side of the story, highlighting comic passages about Robert Ferrars, Mrs. Jennings, Anne Steele, Sir John Middleton, Charlotte Palmer, and more. The girls draw a parallel between the long-suffering Elinor and her more arch fellow heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, as both deal with their nutty friends and families with the utmost equanimity. Everyone can agree that the need for an Elinor Dashwood playbook has never been more pressing... And stay tuned for our next podcast, where we'll be discussing the 1995 Lee/Thomson movie adaptation! The First Impressions podcast is a safe space for us to discuss our love for Jane Austen away from the haters, and perhaps even convert some skeptics in the process. Thanks for listening, and if you enjoyed it, please spread the word and let us know what you think! We can be reached at first.impressions.podcast@gmail.com.
