HOLIDAY REPLAY: The Value of a Woman's Hour: How COVID has shaped women's lives and rituals with Eve Rodsky

For the July 4th holiday week, we're replaying the Season Two finale, featuring Eve Rodsky. As the discussion around Hybrid work and equity around the Return (or not) to the Office continues to heat up, Eve's perspective on how women are impacted is ever important. As one woman noted to me recently, “I want to take advantage of my company's offer to work from home on Thursday, but the two men on my team aren't going to do it.” Women especially want flex, but don't want to be left behind if they're “out of sight; out of mind” when it comes to career advancement. Companies navigating a return to the office without intention and a plan for inclusion could result in leaving people in need of more flex (i.e.: mostly women, people of color, differently-abled people, and caretakers) behind.Original air date: 2/2/21Original show notes: In the season finale of Season Two: The Rituals Edition, Erica has an incredible guest—keynote speaker, New York Times bestselling author, and equality evangelist, Eve Rodsky. Shaped by a difficult upbringing with a single mother in New York City, Eve learned important lessons early on around resilience, responsibility, and care. In this episode, you'll hear about her first ritual—going to a march related to social justice every year on her birthday with her mother, as well as her current ritual—a nightly communication check-in with her husband. Eve has dedicated her life to equality, including by helping partners divide domestic responsibilities more equitably and by helping organizations get to a place of equality and psychological safety. Eve and Erica also discuss this inflection point in history: where either Covid will push mothers out of the workforce, or as a society we'll rise up to make a new, more equitable future of work where women aren't penalized for having dependents. Don't miss this important conversation.   Please Subscribe, Rate and Review on Apple Podcasts You can also listen to the show on: StitcherOvercast GoogleSpotify Resources:Quotes:13:30 – “What [the research] shows is that, when you communicate more consistently, there is psychological safety and connection there. It is a ritual. And rituals allow you to do things that maybe if it's a one-off wouldn't. It allows you to bring up hard conversations and to say, ‘You know what this isn't working, but I know I can come back to this tomorrow night.' And that's what that communication ritual does for Seth and me. We say, ‘You know what, we're going to table this. Let's come back when emotion is low and cognition is high.'” 21:11 – on this covid inflection moment to build something better for working mothers: “To really build a new society after this horrific reckoning…To me the silver lining is, an hour holding our child's hand at the pediatrician's office is just as valuable as an hour in the boardroom. I think we can build that through ritual. I think we can build that through communication. I think we can build that through psychological safety and empathy. But it's going to take not just women doing it. It's going to take men. It's going to take our workplaces.”22:20 – “The leaders we talk to and how much they recognize that being a whole human being is actually better for their company and better for society.”28:38 – “Nothing is going to replace [our previous rituals]. And I think we should grieve for the lost rituals. we should grieve for the fact that we are right now losing those connection times with friends. Or we're losing the ritual  of that daily walk with your grandma, or whatever it was, that we can't do now.”Links to Websites or Resources, text numbers email signupsEve's websiteEve's book, Fair PlayThe Fair Play DeckErica's websiteErica's book, Rituals RoadmapErica's book, Bring Your Human to WorkText ‘human' to 66866 to sign up for Erica's newsletter where she shares how to honor relationships well and how to bring your human to work and life. Connect with Eve:InstagramTwitterLinkedInFacebook Connect with Erica: InstagramTwitterLinkedInFacebook

We are here today with Manon Garcia, the author of We Are Not Born Submissive: How Patriarchy Shapes Women's Lives, published this year, 2021, by Princeton University Press. The book was originally published in 2018 by Climats as On ne naît pas soumise, on le devient. This book was a phenomenon and a runaway bestseller when released in France. We are lucky to have outstanding translation from the author herself in English suited to an American and English audience. What role do women play in the perpetuation of patriarchy? On the one hand, popular media urges women to be independent, outspoken, and career-minded. Yet, this same media glorifies a specific, sometimes voluntary, female submissiveness as a source of satisfaction. In philosophy, even less has been said on why women submit to men and the discussion has been equally contradictory—submission has traditionally been considered a vice or pathology, but female submission has been valorized as innate to women's nature. Is there a way to explore female submission in all of its complexity—not denying its appeal in certain instances, and not buying into an antifeminist, sexist, or misogynistic perspective? We Are Not Born Submissive offers the first in-depth philosophical exploration of female submission, focusing on the thinking of Simone de Beauvoir, and more recent work in feminist philosophy, epistemology, and political theory. Manon Garcia argues that to comprehend female submission, we must invert how we examine power and see it from the woman's point of view. Historically, philosophers, psychoanalysts, and even some radical feminists have conflated femininity and submission. Garcia demonstrates that only through the lens of women's lived experiences—their economic, social, and political situations—and how women adapt their preferences to maintain their own well-being, can we understand the ways in which gender hierarchies in society shape women's experiences. Ultimately, she asserts that women do not actively choose submission. Rather, they consent to—and sometimes take pleasure in—what is prescribed to them through social norms within a patriarchy. Moving beyond the simplistic binary of natural destiny or moral vice, We Are Not Born Submissive takes a sophisticated look at how female submissiveness can be explained. Amanda Gorman mesmerized the country with her passionate recital of her poem, "The Hill We Climb" during the inauguration of President Joe Biden L'68 and Vice President Kamala Harris. Before she captured a nation, Gorman was another at-risk young girl from Los Angeles who had her life transformed by WriteGirl, a writing and mentoring program that launched in 2001 thanks in part to Allison Deegan '80. Each year, more than 500 girls in grades 8 through 12 hone their writing skills, discover their voice and develop into college-bound young women thanks to this mentoring program, which has placed 100 percent of its participants in college. It's the type of program Deegan would have enjoyed and benefitted from when she was growing up, and it's a remarkable story of how this program is putting these at-risk young women on a path to lifelong success. Deegan discusses how WriteGirl empowers these teenagers, how the program helps them become confident leaders, how COVID-19 helped WriteGirl expand its reach across the country, and the important role Syracuse University has played in her life.

How do we write the history of women’s lives when history itself has hidden them? In this International Women’s Day episode of the History Workshop Podcast, Christopher Kissane speaks to the Irish poet and writer Doireann ní Ghríofa about her book 'A Ghost in the Throat', winner of the An Post Irish National Book of the Year and the Foyle’s Non-Fiction Book of the Year. The book weaves together the stories of two women, separated by centuries: Doireann’s experiences as a young mother in twenty-first century Ireland, and the lost life of the poet Eibhlín Dubh ní Chonaill, whose lament for her murdered husband, Caoineadh Airt uí Laoghaire, has been described as the greatest Irish poem of the eighteenth-century. Finding Eibhlín Dubh’s story repeatedly obscured by her famous male relatives and an ‘academic gaze [that swiftly] places her in a masculine shadow, as though she could only be of interest as a satellite to male lives’, Doireann searches for the poet’s life with ‘the brazen audacity of one positioned far from the tall walls of the university’. Through research and imagination, between dropping her children to school and putting them to bed, she constructs a very different history. ‘This’, the book begins, ‘is a female text’.

Have you ever had a spiritual calling? Well one of the owner of the Body Shop of 805, Nastahja Watley, has. And it impacted women's lives along the way. Coming from a background of family who practiced religion and questioned the concept her spiritual practices, she didn't realize how impactful she would be later on until she hit a low point in life in her own family and a mentor had come along to guide her on a spiritual journey. This journey led to following her path on opening up the Body Shop in Oxnard, and along her practice, influenced her sister Kiyanna Keyes, and Kiyanna's wife, Arlene Cortez Hill, to join her on this business journey. Amidst the pandemic occurring this year with Kiyanna working for a college in the athletic department and Arlene in the first response unit, both of the couple found a spiritual calling alongside Nastahja, and eventually as their business grew, so did their influence towards women to start their own business through body sculpting. Our guest is Diana Greene Foster, PhD, who set out to answer this question as definitively as possible. Her book is "The Turnaway Study: Ten Years, a Thousand Women, and the Consequences of Having -- or Being Denied -- an Abortion."
