Rebecca Giblin (author Chokepoint Capitalism, media academic) joins me to explain how the Big Tech squillionaires are choking creatives – musicians, authors, screenwriters etc – and their customers. And in so doing, killing culture. Hmmm….Rebecca is a Melbourne Law School professor specialising in creators' rights and the director of the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia. Her new book Chokepoint Capitalism (co-written with LA-based bestselling science fiction writer and Boing Boing website owner Cory Doctorow) was awarded a Financial Times' “best books of 2022” gong and is one the most talked about polemics doing the podcast rounds. In this chat, we discuss the Taylor Swift Ticketmaster debacle, “chickenization” (how the lock-in tactics used by Monsanto are now applied to live music), whether Spotify playlists are part of the problem, and what we can all do to win back culture again! Viterbo economist John Robinson joins. Spent a lot of the time around the idea from some members of the US House to get rid of federal income tax and to replace that with a 23-30% sales tax on just about everything. Along with that discussion, we talked about filing taxes and who it might help if we did get rid of some of tax systems — like farmers or Hollywood actors. Robinson is a La Crosse native and also Viterbo's Interim Associate Dean and associate professor of business. We kicked off the show talking a bit about the La Crosse School District's building consolidation plan, as the Lincoln Middle School will close this year. Lastly, in there somewhere, we talked about egg price gouging in comparison with the Taylor Swift-Ticketmaster dilemma, as Robinson is a huge Swiftie (or is it Swifty?) and also loves cooking with eggs, apparently.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Couch Convos: Biz and Tech Talks, our automation experts discuss what went wrong with Taylor Swift's latest concert ticket sales. In November 2022, tickets for Taylor Swift's latest concert tour went on sale on Ticketmaster. Huge demand swamped the website during the “pre-sales” period, crashing it and resulting in considerable outcry about customer service, a near-monopolistic business, and other concerns. We are only now seeing how many lawsuits people are filing. In this podcast, we dive into this situation from a technical point of view. What if your organization manages a website that faces substantial demand? It's not only concert tickets that can drive that kind of demand. What about the widespread use of bots, which is one point of contention regarding the topic? Join us for more discussion about the intricate dance between policy and technology in managing high-volume websites! Whether scalper bots were truly responsible for the Taylor Swift/Ticketmaster debacle, they are a considerable problem for companies looking to sell popular items online. In this episode of Today in Tech, we talk with Kasada CEO Sam Crowther about the problem, what IT pros can learn from these events, and how to take on the ‘bots.
Why were so many Taylor Swift fans unable to secure tickets for her upcoming US tour?Possible explanations vary, but many have pointed to market power concentration in creative industries, and how it affects the creative class and consumers. Consider Amazon's influence in book publishing, Google/Facebook's advertising duopoly effect on news media, or in Swift's case, Ticketmaster's control of ticketing and venues for artists. In a new book (co-authored with scholar Rebecca Giblin), Cory Doctorow – a renowned writer and activist – calls this ‘capture' of creative labor markets "Chokepoint Capitalism."Doctorow joins Bethany and Luigi to discuss the negative effects of concentration, why the doctrine that gave us these market effects is inadequate, and what could be done to return more power and profits to creative workers and beyond – while also asking the question: what are we trying to accomplish with competition itself?Read an excerpt from the book here: https://www.promarket.org/2022/10/03/why-streaming-doesnt-pay/

After the Taylor Swift ticket debacle, will Congress hold hearings into Ticketmaster, focusing on antitrust and competitiveness? If it does, it wouldn't be the first time Congress asks questions of Ticketmaster. In the wake of the Taylor Swift “Era's Tour” ticket sale fiasco, Congress has now announced they will create a subcommittee to investigate the lack of competition amongst ticket vendors. The controversy has also brought attention to many examples of corporate monopolies, most notably the anti-trust review into supermarket chain Kroger's acquisition of rival Albertsons. Former Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission and Professor of Law at The George Washington University of Law, William Kovacic, explains how Ticketmaster and Live Nation were able to merge and rout competition, and how the power that the FTC and Congress hold could help limit corporate monopolies. House Republicans on the Oversight and Judiciary Committees say they plan to investigate the President and his family's business dealings abroad, as well as the Justice Department and FBI when they take the majority in January. After years of various congressional investigations, the question is what American voters want Republicans and Democrats to spend their time doing relating to issues such as inflation, Ukraine, crime, and the fentanyl crisis. Democratic Strategist and Co-host of The Five on the FOX News Channel Jessica Tarlov and former Utah Republican Congressman and FOX News Contributor Jason Chaffetz weigh in on the top concerns across the country. On today's episode of the Cadillac Jack – My Second Act podcast, Caddy and Donna get into the backlash from the Taylor Swift/Ticketmaster pre-sale fiasco. Donna opens a show with a funny story about a friend (who shall remain nameless) who fell asleep at the opera and ended up sitting in the handing cap spot. How did this come to be? Oh, and somehow we meander into the continued conversation about Caddy's bedside manner again. Dead or not…alive. The segment continues. We had to, as Donna left a lot of names up in the air on the last one, so we're back to tie up some loose ends. Poor Ticketmaster…I guess. In the aftermath of the just awful job managing the rollout of pre-sale tickets for Taylor's upcoming tour, the CEO went on the public circuit tour to apologize and blame market demands and…Taylor Swift's immeasurable success? Come on man. Taylor apologizes to the fans, too. We still love you. Don't forget to hit up the grocery store before Thanksgiving, and Caddy has some advice: volunteer to bring cranberry sauce to the party. It's the only Thanksgiving staple whose price has actually gone DOWN since the inflation boom of 2022. We're you one of the lucky few who made it through the T-Swift ticket queue? Seriously? Tell us what it was like winning the lottery. Text or call 770-464-6024. And take us with you.
