On episode 36 of the B-side I speak to Australian boxing legend Nader Hamdan. Once ranked No.2 in the world behind Oscar De La Hoya in 2003. He fought some of the world's best, across all corners of the globe waging wars against the likes of Anthony Mundine, Arthur Abraham, Sam Soliman, and John Wayne Parr. He's thrown his hat into the entertainment ring, appearing on shows like The Contender, East West, Mr Inbetween, The Ropes, Heartbreak High, and Underbelly. We talk about growing up in the diverse and once working-class suburb of Marrickville, where he was bullied as a child and became an angry, out-of-control teenager; who turned his life around by taking his passion for fighting off the street and into the ring at Newtown Police boys club. There he met trainer and fellow Marrickville legend, world champion boxer Jeff Fenech. He talks about his boxing career, shares the details of his toughest fight, and the drive that gave him the ability to push through serious injuries and never take a backward step, earning him the ring name 'Lionheart'.We discuss what happens behind the scenes of a fight promotion, the rules of trash talk, and how he caught the attention of some of the world's best once he started embracing the bad-boy persona. And we jam on the merit of 'entertainment' or 'exhibition' fights in the boxing world where YouTubers like Jake Paul or ex-footballers like Paul Gallen and Sonny Bill Williams fight legitimate boxers or MMA stars like Mark Hunt.Nader talks about his son Hassan Hamdan, a potential boxing champion in his own right, who is following in his dad's footsteps, being coached by Jeff Fenech and making waves on the boxing scene. And he talks about the principles of discipline, respect, and self-belief, being crucial to establishing his successful career in boxing, and have become the driving force behind his mission to help bring direction to troubled youth and help others turn their lives around. This was a cracking episode, Nader is a beautiful soul and a great friend, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Cheers. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Promoter Kalle Sauerland is one of the most charismatic characters in the sport. Born in Germany, schooled in England, he has been around boxing his entire life as the son of Hall of Fame boxing promoter Wilfried. He has been instrumental in the World Boxing Super Series and its forerunner, the Super Six, and he's promoted some of the biggest European names in recent years, including Nikolai Valuev, Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham, David Haye and Marco Huck. He has done this while internet fans have dubbed him the 'Colombian Kalle' but also while becoming a hugely popular cult hero, an unusual role for a promoter.
We were hit with a series of fight cards last weekend, accounting for the quantity. The quality was more lacking than many hoped, but still very worthwhile. On HBO Boxing After Dark, Miguel Berchelt defeated Takashi Miura in defending his super featherweight belt, confirming his class in the division, and Sullivan Barrera and Jezreel Corrales also notched wins on the broadcast. Omar Figueroa Jr. smashed Robert Guerrero on Premier Boxing Champions' latest FOX offering, and Chris Eubank, Jr. out-maneuvered Arthur Abraham to confirm his appearance in the upcoming World Boxing Super Series tournament. This week on Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, author/filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler and boxing historian Patrick Connor run it all down for you. Follow us on Twitter! Steve Bunce joins Lee Phelps to preview the weekend's boxing, which includes Chris Eubank Jr taking on Arthur Abraham, Jonathan Victor Barros against Lee Selby and Martin Joseph Ward fighting Anthony Cacace.
2017 isn't letting up much, and for boxing fans that's mostly been a good thing. This coming weekend, HBO airs what is almost sure to be an entertaining fight in Miguel Berchelt vs Takashi Miura, iTV presents a solid card headlined by Chris Eubank Jr. and Arthur Abraham, and FOX provides diversion with Omar Figueroa vs Robert Guerrero. One fight may be five-star, but it's kind of a quantity over quality thing. Still, it's good enough to not complain. But also in need of some addressing: Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor kicked off the press tour for their spectacle this week, and it was...a thing. We'll discuss it all! Follow us on Twitter! Well, that escalated quickly! We all new Josh Taylor was a bright prospect, but his stoppage performance at the weekend blew all our minds and sent shockwaves across the super-lightweight division. As for Ohara Davies, sometimes you have to eat your words or, in this case, a big left hand! Adam and Nick also wax lyrical about the World Boxing Super Series draft, picking out their favorites for the duel-weight tournament, plus they look ahead to Saturday night's ITV PPV tournament qualifier featuring Chris Eubank Jnr and Arthur Abraham. Could this actually be it for Manny Pacquiao? It never seems to be the smart bet to count on a fighter sticking with retirement, but if Manny is done and Tim Bradley was his final bout, it's been a hell of a ride. Not to be totally outdone, Anthony Joshua picked up a heavyweight belt with a quick destruction of Charles Martin last weekend as well. Coming up this weekend, talent reigns supreme as Errol Spence, Jr. takes on Chris Algieri on NBC and Gary Russell, Jr. fights Patrick Hyland on Showtime. Also: In the 1940’s Fatima Massaquoi penned one of the earliest known autobiographies by an African woman. BOXING NEWS editor Matt Christie and John Dennen debate the Miguel Cotto-Saul Alvarez, wondering who will win, how they'll do it and whether the WBC middleweight title fight will become everything it's cracked up to be. We also round up the latest action, including the remarkable feats of the Smith brothers, the Tim Bradley-Teddy Atlas partnership and what's eating Vasyl Lomachenko. Plus we look forward to some more major upcoming fights, considering whether Martin Murray has what it takes to dethrone Arthur Abraham in Germany and whether Anthony Crolla can seize the world title in his rematch with Darleys Perez. No politics, just boxing, get involved.
We are back! St Helens Super-Middleweight Martin Murray (@MartinMurrayBox) joins hosts Sean Watson (@SeanWatson18) and Ric Moylan (@ricmoylan) ahead of his make or break world title tilt against Arthur Abraham in Germany on November 21st. Lend us your ears!
Conversations with Julian Bond The late Julian Bond conducted 51 extensive interviews with prominent black leaders in America. Phyllis Leffler who led the project with Bond, has written a book on the series that offers insights into the intractable disparities of race in America. Also: In the 1940’s Fatima Massaquoi penned one of the earliest known autobiographies by an African woman. Arthur Abraham is one of three editors of The Autobiography of an African Princess, which traces Fatima’s life from her youth in Africa to her later years in America. Later in the show: In his book, The Truth About Cultural Bias, Allen Lewis looks at race in light of the Obama presidency and the George Zimmerman and Michael Dunn court cases as well as his own life. And: Twitter is speeding up communication about racial incidents. Bridgett Robertson says three-fourths of all African-Americans use Twitter to discuss political and social issues of importance to the black community. Also: The Geography of Slavery is a website that catalogues more than 4,000 advertisements offering rewards for runaway slaves (including one written by Thomas Jefferson) placed in newspapers in the later part of the 18th century. Tom Costa says these advertisements humanize the stories of the runaway men and women and will also be used in the classroom to teach American history.

How bratty and ridiculous is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr? He barely got by Marcos Reyes on Showtime, then acted like a real jerk about it. On the undercard, super flyweight McJoe Arroyo got some fortunate scores against Arthur Villanueva, and junior welterweight Amir Imam took out Fernando Angulo. Earlier in the day on CBS, Belfast native Carl Frampton battled Alejandro Gonzalez Jr after being knocked down twice, before winning a decision. In that co-feature, Chris Arreola trudged to a draw with Fred Kassi. In the UK, Scott Quigg, Frampton's potential rival, took out Kiko Martinez in two rounds -- huge, since Martinez went the distance with Frampton in 2014. On the same card, Anthony Crolla settled for a controversial draw against Darleys Perez. Super middleweights Arthur Abraham and Robert Stieglitz fought for the fourth time in Germany, too. Abraham destroyed his rival in six rounds this time. Lastly, Cesar Cuenca and Nonito Donaire both notched wins in Macau, while a ShoBox headlined by Antoine Douglas turned some heads on Friday night. This coming weekend, light heavyweight titlist Sergey Kovalev takes on mandatory Nadjib Mohammedi on HBO which could be explosive. On NBC Sports, Beibut Shumenov continues at cruiserweight to fight BJ Flores. It's a lot, we know. But let James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Fight City's Patrick Connor guide you through it like a pair of fistic sherpa, braving a barren landscape of bulljive. All for you. Thanks for tuning in!

Welterweight Keith Thurman fluted his way to a tough victory over Luis Collazo in the main event of boxing's return to ESPN, and Willie Nelson (not that one, but we know what you mean) scored a great knockout over previously unbeaten Tony Harrison in the opener. Was the entertainment value all part of some Premier Boxing Champions master plan, or did we once more get an accidentally-fun boxing card? Junior welterweight Mauricio Herrera finally caught a break, although he may not have deserved it against Hank Lundy on HBO Latino. The irony is that Herrera still wound up being punished even in a win, as the fight ended early as a result of a bad cut over Herrera's eye. Terry Flanagan picked up a lightweight belt under disappointing circumstances in Manchester, after Jose Zepeda suffered a freak shoulder dislocation and couldn't continue after round two. ...so that sucks. For Zepeda, anyway. This coming weekend, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr faces Marcos Reyes on Showtime in his first fight back since being stopped by Andrzej Fonfara, and Carl Frampton makes his U.S. debut on CBS, fighting Alejandro Gonzalez, Jr in Texas. Overseas, it's Arthur Abraham vs Robert Stieglitz XXVI from Germany and so forth, and Scott Quigg vs Kiko Martinez on Sky Sports. Toss in Leo Santa Cruz vs Abner Mares being finalized and Miguel Cotto vs Saul "Canelo" Alvarez close, and James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Fight City's Patrick Connor have a lot to tackle. Golovkin extends his streak of consecutive knockouts to 19 with a stoppage in round 11. Kenny and Vin analyze the fight and look forward to the future of boxing's beast.
