At the start of 2021, Janice Davidson took a big leap of faith when she quit her longtime position as the director of recreation at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville, Mich. to start her own business, North Mitten Events. Eight months later, Janice describes life as full and busy — and better than ever. “It can be scary for sure, but it feels great. I'm doing what I believe in — things that I feel that are great for our community, both our planet and our people, and I'm really excited to be here,” says Janice, a race director, runner, and mom of two school-age kids who lives on the Betsie River in Benzie County. Janice returns to the MRG Show to talk about her latest endeavor: bringing back a popular trail run in her beloved area of northern Michigan. The Betsie Valley Trail Run — a half marathon, 10K, 5K and 1-mile fun run — takes place on Sunday, Sept. 19 on the Betsie Valley Trail near Thompsonville. As Heather mentions during the show, she ran the half marathon back in 2010, when it was under different race management. It also happened to be Janice's very first 13.1, in 2011. Along with sharing all of the details of this fall's event — the race course is flat and incredibly scenic — Janice talks about life as a business owner, how things have changed for her in the past several months, and an exciting new role she is taking on this winter (she breaks the official news during this conversation!). She also talks about her love of nature and how important spending time outdoors is to her and her family. “I think nature helps us in every way. So getting outdoors, absolutely, and remembering that that's really part of my focus, to help protect our planet and get out there and enjoy it.” there's so many opportunities in northern Michigan to explore and to just be.” You'll also get a special podcast-listener discount code for the Betsie Valley Trail Run. If you're looking for a fall race, you're definitely going to want to check out this one. Heather is hoping to be there, too! FIND NORTH MITTEN: Check out the North Mitten Facebook page here. Writing a TYPO3 Guidebook as a Collective EffortWith upwards of 600 features, writing about a fully featured, open source CMS like TYPO3 can be a challenge. In this episode, Felicity Brand, Heather McNamee, and Jeffrey A. McGuire talk about how they co-authored a TYPO3 guidebook in concert with the TYPO3 community. The need for this guidebook As Jeffrey A. McGuire tells it, TYPO3 wanted a book for a diverse audience, ranging from developers, newbies, project analysts, students, educators, integrators, and digital agencies. He explains that while getting the commission to write the book, “They told us there hasn't been a book for beginners for a while, and we've got this idea that our system is ready to get back out into the world.”Every huge task is made up of smaller stepsA book is an enormous project, and it can be hard to know where to start. But as Felicity Brand says, “Writing a book is just like any other writing task. We put a lot of effort into planning at the start. You create a guide, a framework, and then you start putting these building blocks in place.” Heather McNamee says at Open Strategy Partners, they try to approach every task, even big ones like this guidebook, “the same way you eat an elephant, one bite at a time.”The strength of the TYPO3 community contributed to their successAll three guests today acknowledge how much the strength of the TYPO3 community helped them in the creation of this guidebook. Large, well-established, active, and diverse. Heather says, “We really couldn't have done it without the subject-matter-experts, the incredible documentation team, and the people who blog about TYPO3.”Welcoming to newcomers. As Heather puts it, “The TYPO3 community is ready to scale,” and they actively reach out to help onboard beginners and stakeholders.Leadership is accessible and approachable. Despite being new to the TYPO3 community, Felicity was able to speak with leadership directly to research this guidebook. The community gives back. The TYPO3 community actively supports and contributes to other important projects that many of us rely on like PHP Unit, Symfony, and Composer. What's next for TYPO3 in 2021TYPO3 CMS has more big plans to start 2021 off right. Things get spicy on this week's Make It Stop as Heather and Mike are joined by veritable hardcore legend Kira Roessler (Black Flag, Dos, Awkward) and local up-and-coming musician Sophia Belle (Home Despot) to discuss The Stooges' 35-years-in-the-making fourth album The Weirdness (2007). As Heather, Mike and Sophia do their best to malign Iggy Pop and his history-making and genre-defining band for their iffy production choices, cringe lyrics and uninspiring arrangements, Kira takes them all to task, vehemently defending the band and making us all ask important questions such as: Does our criticism has any value? Why do we have to be such assholes? Is our own music really any better than this? And why exactly do we have such a problem with lyrics about dicks turning into trees? You won't want to miss this one, Stoppies. Part of the Pantheon Podcast network.
In this episode we interview Heather Graham. Heather is a licensed clinical social worker, an expert in mental health in the workplace, and certified employee assistance professional. During our interview with Heather we explore the complexities of what we are experiencing currently with the COVID-19 pandemic, social unrest and racial injustices.Heather reminds us that we are experiencing more than just the pandemic and the uncertainty associated with it but also it’s been an unusual and unexpected year of social unrest, racial injustice, and catastrophic fires. In addition, it’s an election year in the United States, which naturally includes a lot of debate and decisiveness. Heather points out that many of the reasons this is such a difficult time is that our standard ways of coping with stress including social interaction, sporting events, movies, going out, or our ways of distracting ourselves aren’t available to us. This is challenging because we must find new ways of coping or dealing with the fear and anxiety of the unknown or lack of a sense of safety at a time when we are under tremendous stress. Another point Heather brings out is there is “no escape” from the pandemic, and we discuss the impact this has on all of us. No matter where you go you can’t forget about it. It’s an unseen presence in our lives and communities and seeing masks everywhere we go is a constant reminder. In the interview Heather also conveys her thoughts and reflections on the potential for a parallel pandemic because of the trauma, overwhelm, burnout, and moral distress being experienced by the frontline clinicians. We discuss the importance of taking care of the healthcare workers. As Heather says, “they have to be 100% to give 100%”. We talk about the risks of healthcare clinicians developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how PTSD can develop because of multiple exposures to trauma. We close the interview with conversation around what healthcare executives can do to create a supportive workplace culture during this time. This is a very enlightening and informative interview, but you’ll find that out when you listen! Mesothelioma is a type of cancer commonly caused by asbestos. It often affects the tissues around the lungs, heart, abdomen, and testicles. What’s a typical Mesothelioma prognosis? Only your doctor can give you a mesothelioma diagnosis and prognosis. Some versions are treatable while others aren’t. As Heather shares in this episode, not every Mesothelioma prognosis is going to be the same or even the end of the story. What are the most common Mesothelioma symptoms? While signs and symptoms can be different for everyone, chest pain, painful coughing, shortness of breath, and unexplained weight loss are possible signs. Mesothelioma treatment? Not all forms of Mesothelioma are treatable. Those that are depend on several other factors, like the patient’s health, the cancer’s stage, and its location. However, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are the most common forms of treatment for Mesothelioma. This week I'm talking to Heather about the power of nature to heal us, messy gardens, veg patches, the community of community gardening, getting comfortable with silence and making nature connection a habit which is good for the soul. We talk about connecting in a physical way too, to the walking or the feel of the soil, to the exercise, which are so good for our bodies too - although the two are of course connected. We recorded out chat over zoom, so you will hear some variation in the sound quality. Many thanks to Heather for joining me and sharing some personal insights, and I hope that our discussion inspires you to let your garden grow a little bit wild(er), and to connect with nature wherever and whenever you can. 2020 has been a year for the record books in so many ways. If I’ve learned anything from this year it’s that life’s most brutal experiences show us what we are truly made of and open the door to unprecedented growth, impact, and fulfillment. For many women, we believe that we can’t be successful without suffering. That those brutal life experiences are what allow us to thrive. But my guest today would argue that you don’t have to prove your dedication through pain, hustling, or grinding. Being strategic and trusting yourself are enough. Keep Reading >> I am having a very raw, very real, and very fun conversation today with my colleague, Heather Chauvin. Heather is a leadership coach and strategic parenting expert who helps ambitious women become leaders at work and at home. Drawing from her professional experience as a social worker and her life experience raising 3 boys, Heather has created a signature approach to focus her clients on sustainability, profitability, and ease. Listen in today as Heather and I discuss what it was like to be diagnosed with cancer and how that changed her mindset around work, success, and family. We’re diving into the problems with the hustle mentality and why it’s our job to teach people how to treat us. As Heather says, you don’t have to suffer to be successful. To be a leader at home and in your business, it’s about learning to trust yourself and focus on becoming the person you desire your child to be. This episode has so many great insights for you on running a business, overcoming challenges, and becoming the leader you want to be. Today on the Power + Presence + Position Podcast: Heather’s first response to finding out she had cancer. Why Heather used to believe that suffering leads to success. How the hustle is reinforced in every aspect of our culture. How switching from suffering to working strategically impacted Heather’s business. The “epidural” Heather used to numb herself and how she overcame it. Why the concept of non-attachment was crucial in creating her podcast. Why Heather’s million-dollar minute idea is some of the best advice I’ve ever heard. Apologies for the couple of weeks of no podcast, I have been taking some time to consider the direction I want to go with my message and how to best deliver it. During that short hiatus I was able to really come to understand my true purpose and passion- the need to use both science and tradition to achieve self-sovereignty through re-connecting with natures rhythms. Today I chat with Ayurvedic Life Coach, soon to be Ayurvedic Doctor, Heather Johnson from Utah about how yoga and Ayurveda have changed both their lives. Lessons from the oldest health system, even more relevant and validated today. As Heather says, "If your highest truth doesn't line up with the thing, then don't do the thing."
Resilience is a learned behavior, friends. Yes, some people are BORN with it - but most people learn it. It's defined in the dictionary as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness OR the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity. So I ask you this, Brave Listener, how resilient are you? How quickly do you recover when things go wrong? Do you have the ability to spring back into shape? Well, this week's episode is all about learning to be resilient. And it's a story of hope!Author, coach, and Arctic expedition guide (um, how cool is that!?), Heather Thorkelson joins us to talk about growing up wealthy but severely neglected. Today my conversation is with Heather Lobe Johnson. Heather is a writer who is passionate about sharing stories of freedom found in the redemption of Christ and celebrating the beauty that rises from the ashes of broken experiences. During our conversation, Heather and I talk about growing up with a perception of the Lord that His love was contingent on her instead of on Him. She bravely shares with us about the parts of her story that God has carried her through, everything from experiencing sexual abuse in college, a toxic marriage that ended in divorce, years of single parenting and pursuing healing by redefining her identity through who God says she is. As Heather says, “It’s not about having it all together, it’s about bringing your broken to Him and letting Him redeem it and bring wholeness to emptiness.” I’m so grateful for how she shares her story, the practical wisdom she shares for those who may be able to relate as well as the hope she offers us through this season of incredible uncertainty, what is helping her as she faces the anxiety of our days head on, and how to process what you can and can’t control. Almost like a benediction to our conversation. Heather prayed incredibly sweet blessing over all of us during this crazy time that just washed over my soul and I hope it does for you too. No matter where you are today, I hope this time with Heather and I blesses you. No matter who you are, or what you have been through, there is still more. The hope that is found in Christ is worth it. Believing that He has good for your life is not about getting what you want, it's about having faith that the One who made you has good, truly, divinely good, purposes and plans for your life. Plans of peace and your truest well being, and that can see who you truly are and who you were made to be. I want you to know that whoever you are on the other side of the speaker, no matter where you are when you hear this episode, in the throws of this pandemic spanning the globe, or long after it is over, this is not how the story ends. When a photo of a new “boy band” crossed PR Agent Heather Hawkins’ desk in 2001, she was surprised at how glamorously they were presented. The era of Backstreet Boys was over; kids were listening to “real music” (like highly produced punk), and what was more, the look of the band didn’t match the sound. As Heather and her coworkers listened to the music and got to know the band members, they quickly realized that something needed to change. “[W]e realized that in order for them to survive in the ecosystem we needed to absolutely double down on the music and who they really were as people. We understood that that was going to mean making some really tough decisions.” Heather and her crew took on the philosophy of “Radical Authenticity” and proudly began shipping the band to Jeep Jamboree campouts, Sam Adams beer festivals, and locations, where bands respected for their musical proficiency, would be expected to play. Their long game paid off: the band, Maroon 5, became a globally recognized tour de force, and are still producing hits today. Now the CEO and founder of Elevation Strategy, a visibility consultancy, Heather loves working with companies to crystallize their brand DNA and find their “guiding North Star.” Listen in to our conversation and learn more in the show notes at https://whitneyjohnson.com/heather-hawkins
The world is going through a progression, as more and more women and minorities are breaking into all areas of education and business. There is still a long way to go, but this progress is spearheaded by leaders in both areas who make it their passion to help equality become more and more of a reality in our modern times. Dr. Heather Metcalf is the Chief Research Officer at the Association for Women in Science (AWIS). Metcalf is Project Lead on the STEM to Market and Advanced Resource and Coordination Network initiatives. She has extensive experience leading the empirical intersection between work and gender in the STEM fields. The social sciences and STEM fields each have their own ways of thinking. Having immersed herself in both computer science and gender studies, which are fields with two traditionally distinct mindsets, Heather had a unique, well-rounded experience that informs her professional life and the initiatives she leads. Heather completed her postdoctoral research at the University of Arizona where she holds a patent on training materials for effective search and hiring processes. Heather got her PhD in Higher Education - Science and Technology Policy at The University of Arizona, where she also earned her Master’s in Gender and Women’s Studies. In addition, Heather completed an MS in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During the educational process for quantitative professions in STEM, sometimes communication and non-technical writing skills can end up being undervalued, even if it isn’t intentional. For Dr. Metcalf, those areas did not seem so separate. As she mentions in the interview, endeavors such as writing an argument aren’t so much different from making a proof in mathematics or creating an algorithm. Even more important is the need for scientists to be better at communicating complex and important issues such as climate change to a sometimes skeptical public. Unconscious bias from investors Becoming an entrepreneur is a difficult endeavor that involves a high amount of risk. For those who have great ideas but find themselves without the capital to bring them to fruition, the task can seem insurmountable. The solution for most startup entrepreneurs is to find investors to help them realize their dream. As Heather talks about this week, many investors have an inherent bias towards women. More often than ideal, when women are seeking capital, investors tend to ask them questions about risk. Conversely, they tend to ask men questions about promotion. As Heather points out, women receive less than 2% of Venture Capital investing, and women of color receive even less, at one-half percent. That is the goal of the STEM to Market initiative, to help promote STEM women entrepreneurs and cultivate inclusive investors. Welcome to a new episode of the The Academy on ITSPmagazine! Sean Martin and Selena Templeton had the great pleasure of sitting down with Heather Ricciuto, Academic Outreach Leader at IBM Security, at this year’s RSA Conference. In this podcast, we talk about all things educational when it comes to attracting and retaining cybersecurity talent. Heather’s path into cybersecurity was accidental, which makes her a great advocate for other non-traditional paths into this industry. Traditionally, companies like IBM have focused on recruiting from 4-year universities, but how are you going to build a pipeline when you’re recruiting from the same top schools and competing for the same talent? IBM’s “new collar” initiative focuses on skills rather than degrees alone and attracting new talent from non-traditional talent pools (2-year schools, veterans, internships, mentorships, self-trained folks, people who have cybersecurity certifications but not degrees). As Heather says, it’s all about opening the aperture. Listen to this podcast to hear about all the things that Heather and IBM are doing to educate, inform, attract and retain a wide variety of talent to the cybersecurity industry. The first is learning to be unapologetic (or as she puts it, unapologetically fierce). We are taught from a young age to ask permission and to be hesitant to give our opinion, but interior designers are in the business of having opinions, and you need to be ready to stand firm behind your opinion as an expert in the field. As Heather says, you may think that what you’re offering is obvious or interior design is easy, but for 99% of the people out there it’s not. It’s a foreign language that they don’t understand and they need help. So you should be unapologetic in offering your opinion, because you’re the one who knows design. When you’re selling your art it can feel weird, but it’s the business. Learn to sell yourself The second factor in boosting your confidence to improve your marketing is to learn to sell yourself, Heather says. That means you’re getting used to discussing your previous work and what knowledge and expertise you bring to interior design and to do that, you have to look at your expertise and knowledge as another entity. As Heather says, by treating your expertise and knowledge as a third entity, you can view it as totally separate from you, so it’s not tied up in your own doubts or feelings about yourself. So if you think of it as another entity, then when someone comes to you with a design problem, you can say, “You should do x, y, or z” because of this third entity, aka your experience and knowledge. So rather than it’s “what I want,” it’s “this is what’s best.” Connect With Darla & Wingnut Social www.WingnutSocial.com On Facebook On Twitter: @WingnutSocial On Instagram: @WingnutSocial Darla’s Interior Design Website Subscribe to The Wingnut Social Podcast on iTunes, Google Podcasts, or TuneIn
Our last three episodes of Green Beauty Conversations formed our Beauty Branding Week and gave you plenty of strategies and practical tactics to help you get under way on your branding journey. However, if you've already launched your brand but feel that it's looking tired or is not doing your business justice or perhaps you've simply fallen out of love with it, now might be the right time to consider rebranding your beauty business. If you are at this juncture, then our guest in this episode has plenty of insights to help you work out if a rebrand might be good for your beauty business. We chat to Formula Botanica alumni Heather Urquhart, founder of Huna Natural Apothecary about the gains and pains of a rebranding exercise. Huna Apothecary is based in Winnipeg, Canada, and creates 100% natural and organic high-performance skin nutrition. Although having launched her business only a few years ago, Heather realised that Huna needed to enhance its brand positioning to be able to attract more retailers and compete with well-known, larger names in the natural beauty industry. When Heather started out she wisely bootstrapped most of her business and branding, but when she started missing out on market opportunities, she decided it was time to invest seriously in Huna's branding. In this episode, Heather talks us through her rebranding journey with its highs and lows. In this episode, you'll find out about: Why investing in your branding as early as possible is essential not peripheral to growing your business; Why retailers are a great resource and can help give you a reality check and feedback when you face a rebrand; How working with creative professionals on rebranding your beauty business makes all the difference to its success; Why you need to allow a good six months, or more, from creative brief to finishing a rebranding exercise; What outcomes you can expect from taking the plunge to rebrand. As Heather moves Huna from its first years as a start-up beauty business to running a premium natural beauty brand stocked widely in her native Canada, and soon further afield, she has plenty of business advice too. Key takeaways from this episode on the reasons to rebrand your beauty business include: Communicate closely with your retail partners throughout your rebrand process. They have their finger on the pulse of consumers probably more than you do. Don't underestimate how much time and money can go into sourcing the right packaging. Note also that premium beauty may require a look and finish with high minimum order quantities. Don't forget about the website in your rebranding exercise. Hire web design and build experts with a proven track record in delivering on time and to brief. You will make mistakes in building your brand and business but remember, this is part of your growth and learning curve. Just remain agile and be prepared to change course. We're in the beauty business where image counts. Don't forget that in your quest to showcase its green, clean face. In the 6th century CE, the Roman emperor Justinian embarked upon a series of wars that seemed to herald the restoration of the Roman empire in the western Mediterranean. In his book Rome Resurgent: War and Empire in the Age of Justinian (Oxford University Press, 2018), Peter Heather recounts the campaigns of Justinian’s armies and the factors that made them possible. As Heather explains, the Roman imperial state in the 6th century was one focused mainly upon the waging of war, though for all of the revenue expended upon its armies the eastern Romans had experienced a series of defeats at the hands of their Sassanian Persian rivals to their east. Soon after Justinian took the throne, however, the eastern Roman armies enjoyed a series of successes thanks to the leadership of his most successful commander, Belisarius. While these victories helped define Justinian’s stature as emperor, maintaining them ultimately proved the greater challenge, one that Justinian’s successors were unable to accomplish. As Heather embarks for Rose City Comic Con, what a better time than to discuss the history of fans and the conventions they love!
The podcast begins by highlighting some feelings that fellow deconverts have had regarding their friendships after deconverting. As Heather and Christine reflect on friendship, they highlight friends that were influential to their deconversion. They also discuss differences between Christian and non-Christian friends before and after deconversion. One specific theme that comes up is the idea of jealousy in Christianity, where it seems like God is paying attention to other friends who may seem more devoted or simply more popular. Throughout the discussion they mention how they've stayed connected or reconnected with friends in their journey of deconversion. If you are enjoying the podcast, please subscribe, rate, and review! Also, send thoughts, artwork, poetry, or other expressive media that tells a piece of your deconversion story and we will try to feature them in one of our openings or endings. These can be sent to forsakingfaith@gmail.com. Catch you next Sunday! On this episode of the podcast we're thrilled to be rejoined by Wilkie who now has a bit more time away from his doctoral program with school being out. Our guest on this episode is Heather Planchon (IG: @theprimaryparty) who is a kindergarten teacher in Boston. During our conversation Heather about the importance of face to face communication with parents, how to merge with teachers who have different styles than our own, and the need for all teachers to "get real" about what is going on in their classrooms. As Heather says during the podcast, "teaching is much harder than it looks and their needs to be trust all around!" We loved having the chance to talk with Heather and we hope you enjoy this episode of the podcast. PS. Sorry for the poor sound quality at times. Between our nasal breathing and the bad connection we know parts are hard to listen to. But what Heather has to say is to valuable to let those things keep us from sharing her story with you. As Heather takes a self-imposed running break following a spring marathon and half marathon, to ensure a longtime comes-and-goes running injury heals, she welcomes physical therapist and board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist Jeff Samyn to the show. Jeff, a runner who also does CrossFit, works at Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Center in Petoskey, Mich. They talk about when to know you should take a break from running due to pain/discomfort (and why it's so tough to actually admit this to ourselves!), the best ways to handle running breaks (both mentally and physically), and how to ease back into a routine. Heather and Jeff also share reader comments from the Michigan Runner Girl Facebook page—many readers and listeners chimed in with their own stories of running injuries, running breaks, chronic pain, and cross-training ideas and lots more. The Michigan Runner Girl podcast is back after a couple week break. The summer show release schedule will be a bit more sporadic as Heather and her production team enjoy summer in Michigan—and gear up for a full line-up of weekly shows this fall. The Michigan Runner Girl Show is supported by the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.
