3.1415926535897932, or about 22/7. Herlinda Heras is judging at the 2024 British Pie Awards and calls in to Brew Ha Ha today, and with Harry Duke sitting in for Steve Jaxon. Here is an episode of Brew Ha Ha from March 22, 2018, when Herlinda had just returned from that year's competition. The winners are listed at the 2024 British Pie Awards website. Today we hear all about her itinerary on her current trip to the England and Ireland. She began in London, judging the National Fish and Chips competition. Then, she visited Dublin, Ireland, where she saw Teeling Whiskey, the Guiness attraction "Beer Disneyland" and a museum exhibit. Her last stop was the British Pie Awards, an annual event in the town of Melton Mobray. This is Herlinda's 10 year as a judge in this competition. The pies at the 2024 British Pie Awards are very traditional and the judging takes into consideration all of the characteristic virtues of combining meat and crust. The categories of pies have evolved, so that today there is a category for Vegan pies, as well as vegetarian recipes and many others. Herlinda explains how there is a hole at the top of the pie, as in the picture here. This is part of the recipe, specifically the baking process. They place a bit of jelly into the hole which bakes into the pie.

Mark Twain once said, “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” Today's guest knows a little something about whiskey. Alex Chasko is the Master Distiller and Blender and was employee number one at Teeling Whiskey, which was built in 2012 and was the first new distillery in Dublin for over 125 years. However, Alex didn't start there. His passion for brewing can be seen as early as sophomore year when he started making beer with at-home brew kits and spent his summers at Bridgeport Brewing Company. Through working at Bridgeport, Alex learned how biology and chemistry were applied to the elements of brewing. After graduating from the University of Oregon, Alex worked at Pyramid Brewing Company in Seattle until he realized he wanted to get into whiskey and distilling. When it comes to whiskey, Edinburgh, Scotland, is the only place to go. So, Alex saved up his pennies, sold his truck, and enrolled in Heriot-Watt University in their Masters of Brewing and Distilling program, where he felt like he belonged. After a brief stint in Singapore to open a brew pub and rediscover where he was born, Alex moved back to Ireland in 2008 to bring new ideas to whiskey. For 20 years, Teeling had struggled to compete against large distilleries such as Jameson but thanks to Alex's dedication to bringing new and innovative flavors to whiskey, Teeling is now the World's Most Awarded Irish Whiskey. Teeling continues to raise the bar and boasts over 200 International Whiskey Awards. In this episode Matt talks to Teeling Whiskey Master Distiller, Alex Chasko live from Dublin. Teeling has remained a bit of an enigma to me over the past few years as I've tried to get my head around the myriad of brands they produce. To put me straight and get my head around the company and their approach, I sat down with Robert Caldwell, Teeling Global Brand Ambassador to help me understand what Teeling is all about, the philosophy behind its distillation and maturation and what we might expect from them going forward.
In 2015, Teeling Irish Whiskey opened Dublin's first new distillery in 125 years.Brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling have recently achieved another significant milestone with the launch of Teeling Single Pot Still, the company's interpretation of this classic whiskey style that is unique to Ireland. In this interview recorded on May 29, 2020, Stephen and I discuss the origins of single pot still. He explains the significance this new product has to the Teeling family, which has an association with Irish whiskey dating back to 1782.Also on the agenda is the company's launch of a 28-year-old single malt whiskey, following on from the 24-year-old that was named world's best single malt at the World Whiskies Awards 2019.And we take a look at the evolution of Irish whiskey more broadly, and the reasons behind the Teelings' decision to sell a minority share of their business to Bacardi Limited in 2017.But first, you'll hear from Stephen how Teeling Whiskey has been handling the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anne Marie Roberts of Teeling Whiskey in Dublin, Ireland is our guest today on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Mark Carpenter. She is the California Brand Ambassador, based in Oakland. Herlinda Heras is also in the studio today. Teeling Whiskey is the first new distillery to open in Dublin, Ireland, in 125 years. They opened about 5 years ago and the founders come from a very old whiskey-making family. “We represent a new generation of distillers, focussed on innovation and cask maturation and leading with flavor,” she explains. Their casks are made of at least seven types of wood and this is what gives most of the flavor to the whiskey, and over 100 cask types. Today they will taste four whiskeys from Teeling: a grain whiskey made of corn, a small batch blend of corn and malted barley, a single malt made from 100% malted barley and A single pot still whiskey, the first one produced since the 1970s. Mark Carpenter started the distillery at Anchor in 1973, it was the only pot still in America. All the big distillers use continuous stills, where you feed your mash in the bottom and the whiskey comes out the top. Pot stills are done in batches. The Irish distillers are the only ones who use the single pot still technique. The single grain in a corn whiskey but spends its 5 years of maturation in Cabernet barrels from Napa Valley. Irish whiskey must be three years plus one day old (one day older than the Scotch requirement). Also, Scotch and American whiskeys are required to be aged only in oak, while Irish whiskey calls for “wood like oak,” so they have more freedom. Tara Nurin calls in from Seattle, Washington, where she is continuing her research travels for her book about women in the brewing business. Today’s date is March 12, which is just as the Covid-19 crisis is starting to appear so she may cut the trip short. She describes the copper tanks at the New Albion brewery there, which are like the ones at Anchor in San Francisco. Teeling Whiskey is a fairly young company and they are building their brand and their distribution. They have won more then 200 awards around the world for their whiskey in the last five years. They were the first Irish whiskey to win the single-malt category at the World Whiskey Awards, for their 24-year. The single malt they are tasting today spends 9 to 23 years in different wine casks. There are many types of wine casks used, all of which lend flavor to the whiskey. “It’s a beautiful whiskey,” says Mark Carpenter. Anne Marie describes the flavors in each one. Teeling Whiskey's prices range from about $28 to $60, but there are some single casks and 34 or 35 year-old whiskeys which may sell in the thousands. The 24-year-old was the first Irish whiskey to win the worldwide single-malt award.
Is physical attraction really that important? Can you have a great relationship with just an emotional connection? It seems that nowadays people downplay the importance of physical attraction and say that the emotional connection is more important. Crystal recently watched the new show on Netflix, Love is Blind, and thought this would be a great way to discuss this topic. In this episode, Seth and Crystal sip on Teeling Whiskey and discuss their thoughts on if love truly is blind in the sense of physical and emotional connections. Did you know that Teeling's holds the world record the most expensive new bottle of whiskey ever sold at auction! It's true! Someone paid 10,000 pounds for a bottle of the whiskey that Rob Caldwell brought us for this podcast. We approach our craft with a respect for generations passed but with the confidence to forge the next chapter of Irish, Dublin and Teeling Whiskey”~Stephen TeelingWhiskey making and entrepreneurship has been in the Teeling genes as far back as 1782, when Walter Teeling set up a small craft distillery on Marrowbone Lane in the industrial heart of Dublin City.Since 2012, Jack and Stephen Teeling, the latest generation of Teeling Whiskey makers, have been putting their own mark on Irish Whiskey and came full circle in 2015 when they proudly opened the new Teeling Whiskey Distillery just down the road from where the original family distillery once stood. The Teeling Whiskey Distillery today is the first new distillery in Dublin for over 125 years. We are situated just a stone's throw from our ancestral distillery, right in the heart of the Golden Triangle, the historic distilling district of the city. Here at Teeling Whiskey we are renowned for our vision in doing things differently. Our Whiskeys embody this unconventional spirit with innovation at the core of everything we do. For us, it's what's inside the bottle that counts – we let the liquid do the talking, and our liquid has plenty to say.The delicate base of Irish Whiskey is the perfect canvas upon which to layer flavour and character. Varying the time, style and number of barrels used during the maturation process adds to the subtlety and complexity of flavour we pride ourselves in. Now that we have our own Dublin distilled spirit coming of age, our ingenuity is the only limitation to the unique styles and expressions we can craft in the future. After putting all this care and attention into what goes into our Whiskey, we don't like to take anything out. We don't chill filter our Whiskey prior to bottling, leaving as much of the body, character and richness in the bottle. We bring our Whiskey from cask strength to our signature ABV of 46%, allowing us to bottle with no chill filtration, maintaining the true natural character of all our Teeling Whiskeys.Team Teeling are dedicated to bringing more choice and innovation into Irish Whiskey. Inspired by the influence of time and innovative cask maturation techniques, our young team of craftsmen and craftswomen are producing small batch bottlings of unique Irish Whiskeys. Our goal is to retain the drinkability of Irish Whiskey while introducing new and interesting flavours to complement the naturally smooth and sweet taste of Irish Whiskey. We aim to encapsulate our passion for quality, authenticity and craft in every bottle of Teeling Whiskey.Alex Chasko, our Master Distiller and Blender, is a case in point. Originally hailing from Portland, Oregon he started his journey working in the emerging craft brewing scene on the West Coast of the US. Through his Irish wife, he found himself in Ireland looking to get into the emerging Irish Whiskey industry. In meeting Jack Teeling, it became immediately clear that they shared the same vision and saw the opportunity to re-invent Irish Whiskey. Alex was employee no.1 back in 2012 and has been instrumental in the building of the new distillery and the creation of our award winning Teeling Whiskey range. Come and sample our range at the Teeling Distillery by booking your visit today.A trip to Dublin would not be complete without seeing the first working distillery in Dublin for decades in all its glory, so simply choose a tour that is most suited to your needs, get booked on and we look forward to extending the traditional warm, Irish welcome, in the modern Teeling way.--Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Ireland has witnessed a craft beer and distilling renaissance in recent years. Teeling Whiskey, Gunpowder Gin and more besides have emerged and made their mark on the whiskey world and more surprising is the re-emergence of Poitín. No longer a bootlegged commodity, the once mysterious drink is now appearing in cocktail bars in London and New York. So, how did it all go mainstream? Gavan Reilly is joined by Donal Fallon of the Come Here To Me! blog for another episode of Hidden Histories.
Rob Caldwell from Teeling Whiskey in Dublin Ireland, is our guest today on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Mark Carpenter. Herlinda Heras has brought Rob in for a special Tuesday edition since Rob is in town just for today. "We're the new generation of Dublin distillers" says their website. Frank Jacuba is also in, from the Bacardi company, which distributes Teeling. "Teeling Whiskey. We let the liquid do the talking." Rob talks about the huge revival of Irish whiskey, which was once the biggest whiskey category in the world. 70% of global whiskey used to come from Ireland, from 200 distilleries, down to two by the 1970s. Innovations in distillation changed the way whiskey was made. Also, Prohibition hurt the Irish whiskey business. Rob has brought three whiskeys to taste, a single grain, a blend and a single malt. Herlinda asks Rob to talk about the different kinds of whiskey and bourbon, from America, Ireland and Scotland.

All by way of Canada. Drink along with us and it'll all make sense, plus you'll love Teeling Single Grain.
Jack Teeling is one of the brightest and most ambitious entrepreneurs in Ireland. His family's dedication to Ireland and whiskey created the bold Teeling Whiskey distillery. A lifetime infused with financial calculations and exceptional business acumen built the perfect pedigree for Jack to achieve his biggest feat yet: constructing the first distillery in Dublin in over 125 years. Where does this legacy of whiskey continue and thrive? Does innovation have its place in a category known for the opposite? We chat SNES, fatherhood, shadows, and more.
When Raymond Davidson and his sons started marketing the Glencairn Whisky Glass in 2001, they thought the target audience was whisky blenders and industry professionals, and never imagined much consumer demand. Last year, Glencairn Crystal sold more than three million of its iconic and often-copied whisky glasses worldwide - up 22 percent from the previous year. Scott Davidson is Glencairn Crystal's managing director now, and joins us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Bacardi is entering the Irish Whiskey market with a deal to acquire a minority stake and U.S. distribution rights for Teeling Whiskey. Sweden's Box Distillery is planning a major expansion, and a few bottles of the final cask of Black Bowmore 1964 are now available in the U.S. We'll also welcome another new Brand Partner to WhiskyCast and announce the winner of our latest giveaway, too!
Leaving academia has been the best decision yet for Teeling Whiskey's Kevin Hurley. The Dublin native has not only been at the helm of Ireland's cocktail resurgence, but he's quickly become one of the world's foremost authorities on Irish Whiskey. With such a creative lens of distillation, Kevin travels the world sharing the delicious labels of Teeling Whiskey. We chat sports, architecture, health, and how delicious the Teeling Single Malt is.

Increasing the price of a stamp to between 90c and €1 still represents “fantastic value” for the customer, according to An Post CEO, David McRedmond. On the Inside Business podcast today, he joined Sherry Fitzgerald Chief Economist, Marian Finnegan, and Teeling Whiskey co-founder, Stephen Teeling, to look ahead to 2017 and discuss the potential impacts of Brexit, Trump and political uncertainty across Europe, on their own sectors and the wider economy. An Post is undergoing a strategic review and has “quite a way to go” in figuring out its ten year plan, said McRedmond, but it will raise the price of a standard stamp from 72c next year to help ensure security of cash-flow. A re-configuration of the rural post office network is also on the cards, but McRedmond said An Post remains committed to maintaining it and diversifying services. The panel spoke about the export environment post-Brexit, how the Apple ruling might affect government tax policies and the future of the property market. Sherry Fitzgerald’s Marian Finnegan said while there is “no silver bullet” for the problems facing her sector, the government’s Action Plan for Housing is at least the first vision there has been for it in a long time. A lack of housing stock and a strong letting crisis will continue to cause problems for the marketplace in 2017, she added. Stephen Teeling said the weak dollar has worked to his company’s favour in the past few months and he talked about their plans to expand into the US in 2017. The North American market is Teeling’s biggest by “a factor of four or five”, he said and they will have 11 graduates stationed across the region next year in a bid to have “boots on the ground… for grassroots marketing”.

Adam Hannett has a tough job, though he wouldn't trade places with anyone for the world! He took over for the legendary Jim McEwan as head distiller at Bruichladdich following Jim's retirement last summer, and has just released his first bottling: Octomore 7.4 Virgin Oak. We'll talk with Adam about the future at Bruichladdich, what it's like to have your mentor living right next door to the distillery, and Bruichladdich's plans to make its recipes for the "Classic Laddie" more transparent starting next month. In the news, the Scotch Whisky Association has warned Bruichladdich to run those plans by UK regulators first, while nearby Lagavulin has unveiled its 200th anniversary bottling with a nod to the distant past. Teeling Whiskey is sending 12 different single barrel Irish whiskies to the US in time for St. Patrick's Day, Scotland's northernmost mainland distillery is releasing its first whisky, and we now know the new name for the restored Old Taylor Distillery in Kentucky.
Lots to talk about this week, with news from all over the world! Bruichladdich's Jim McEwan joins us on WhiskyCast In-Depth to talk about the world's peatiest whisky ever -- his Octomore 6.3 with a phenol level of 258ppm! We'll also hear about new whiskies from Tomatin, Duncan Taylor, Midleton, and Whistlepig...the latest on Teeling Whiskey's new Dublin distillery that could be ready to make whiskey by St. Patrick's Day, and look at the Bourbon boom with Beam Suntory's chief of marketing and sales for Whiskies and Cognacs, Chris Bauder.
Xander has assembled a tight-knit cadre of super-podcaster-reviewer-folk that include Grush, Zane Fried, and Carl Bowlby. How tight-knit? They were trapped together in a tiny, industrial-grade comedy sweater. That's a thing. Still with us? No? We couldn't follow that one either. Give it a listen for all the normal great reasons: we review an Irish alcohol (Teeling Whiskey), talk a bunch of nonsense, work the shaft of Grush's advice column, and spread the word of Heaven in a PSA that goes terribly awry. If you are iTunes and are searching this text for keywords, I would say the following disjointed words to you: comedy, jokes, silly, funny, comedians, Chicago, booze, drink, review.
Alwynne Gwilt couldn't stand whisky...hated it, in fact. That is, until a former boss in London dragged the Canadian expat to a media tasting. It's not quite the same transformation Peter Parker had following his encounter with a radioactive spider, but that evening turned Alwynne into "Miss Whisky". Now, she's on her own blogging, freelance writing, and leading whisky tastings...and joins us for this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Diageo plans to open Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville to the public, but there are still no official plans to restart production...yet. Beam loses a preliminary battle in its legal fight over Irish whiskey supplies, Teeling Whiskey gets more distribution in Latin America, and The Glenrothes uncovers a single cask from 1969.
Kilchoman became Islay's newest distillery in 2005, about the same time Jean Donnay started making whisky at Glann ar Mor on France's Brittany Coast. Fast forward 10 years to 2015, when Donnay is scheduled to open his new distillery on Islay's Gartbreck Farm and claim the title of Islay's youngest distillery. Gartbreck received planning permission this week, and construction is expected to begin this May. Jean Donnay joins us on WhiskyCast In-Depth to discuss his longtime dream of distilling on Islay and his plans for Gartbreck Farm. In the news, the TSA relaxes its rules on carrying duty-free whiskies on board flights for international passengers, Dublin officials give Teeling Whiskey the green light to start construction on its new distillery, and the Kentucky Bourbon Affair's "golden tickets" sold out in little more than a week.
