What do the pharmaceutical industry and an icebreaker turned polar cruise vessel have in common? You're forgiven when your answer to this question is, “Absolutely nothing!”You would – however – be wrong. Because my guest today is the link between these two very different worlds.Entrepreneur in the polar expedition world Heather Thorkelson is an entrepreneur who runs a coaching company, a polar expedition company, and is part owner of a polar ship management company. While she was successful in the structured 9-5 world, she always hated the lack of agency and the arbitrary rules which led her to abandon that world for good in 2010.Since then she has built companies based around her values and made a concerted effort to live closer to nature. No plan BIn 2020 she put her experience of leaving the corporate world without a fixed plan for her future on paper in her book ‘No Plan B: A Handbook for Incurable Entrepreneurs and Other Rebellious Souls'.You know it's a good one when marketing guru Seth Godin gives it a blurb that says:“If you've realized that there is no cure for your desire to be an entrepreneur, Heather has a direct, honest and personal take on how to get from here to there... We each have a chance to make things better by making better things.”Heather BelievesHeather believes in dogs, cheese and foraging in the forest. She has lots of healthy, strong boundaries. She believes in kindness because kindness is everything. And — I'm glad I'm not the only one — she believes in swearing since it is, as she puts it, a creative outlet.Heather has worked in the polar expedition world for over a decade and has returned to Antartica more than 30 times. As the daughter of an airline pilot, Heather is a lifelong traveller and has lived long-term in 7 countries outside her passport country of Canada. She currently lives in rural Sweden with her husband and dog.

She also works with folks who have spent most of their career in the corporate world and are more than ready to leverage their amazing skill set to do something different. Heather loves a good reinvention. She went through her own in 2010 and has never looked back. She’s been running a successful international coaching and consulting business since 2011 via the magic of the internet. She also owns a polar expedition company – and being at the helm involves lots of capital, the hiring of entire ships, staffing, remote management, and strategic decisions in a market that can sometimes throw you a massive curveball (hello covid!). Plus, Heather then went ahead and co-founded a polar ship management company with partners in Norway!

I first heard the term Slow Business when my friend Heather Thorkelson (https://heatherthorkelson.com/) posted about her experience attending a business retreat in Norway called Slow Business Adventure. It sounded right up my alley and I was quickly introduced to one of the women behind the event Torill Wilhelmsen, and booked my ticket right away. Sadly COVID derailed the event in 2020, but it gave me language for how I approach my business now. After burning out hard in 2016 after constantly chasing carrots in my previous business, I knew I needed a different more sustainable approach. In this episode, I share what I've discovered along the way and why I'm such a fan of "going slow to go fast." Links: Slow Business Adventure: https://www.slowbusinessadventure.com/

Crimes which occur in Antarctica may be rare, but they are rife with drama and intrigue. In this episode, Heather Thorkelson and Lauren Farmer discuss the complicated legal background of investigating and prosecuting a crime on the white continent, where multiple countries can claim jurisdiction based on where the crime occurred and who was involved. Several psychological factors also contribute to these criminal acts, including isolation and boredom. Paired with alcoholism, which is a known problem on the continent, trouble ensues. Lauren and Heather take us on a wild journey through the most infamous cases, starting with an ice axe attack over a chess game in 1952 and finishing up in 2018 with an ongoing feud ending in a violent stabbing. It can chip away at our pride, make us question our own abilities, sometimes create paralyzing anxiety, and yes, sometimes, to some people, make us appear weak. But it doesn’t have to. Because asking for help can also do something else — it can help us create better results. Confident people often ask others for help, not only because they’re secure enough to let it be known they need help but they know that trying to do everything themselves is not always the best use of their time, skills or energy and that it can leave them feeling overwhelmed and stressed and then they can’t do things properly. Confident people find someone who’s good at what they need to learn or get done and then ask for their help and guidance. They know that asking, ‘Can you help me?’ shows respect for the other person’s knowledge and abilities. Otherwise, they wouldn’t ask. Refusing to ask for help is counter-productive; you’re more likely to berate yourself when you can’t get it done well or on time, which only serves to knock your self-esteem and confidence further. Build a network Active networking is vital to career growth. Networking is all about building long-term relationships and a good reputation over time. It involves meeting and getting to know people who you can assist and who can potentially help you in return. Your network includes everyone from friends and family to work colleagues and members of groups to which you belong. The most obvious benefit of networking is to meet potential clients and/or generate referrals which you can then follow up on to hopefully add to your client base. Networking can also help you identify opportunities for partnerships, joint ventures, or new areas of expansion for your business. In addition to the potential of increasing your business you can often find solutions to your own business problems or needs by networking. Live life to the fullest No matter who a person is, what they are currently doing, how much money they have in the bank, and so on, everyone can start living life to the fullest. You just never know what may happen in the future, so taking advantage of the time you have now is very important. No one ever wants their life to flash before their eyes and wonder whether their life was meaningful or not, whether they had a good time, or whether they regret past decisions. Be open to new things and tackle your fears. When was the last time you did something new? So many people live inside their comfort zone when they actually need to branch out every now and then. Yes, stepping outside of your box can be tough, but what if it completely opened your eyes and changed your whole outlook on life? Wouldn’t that be amazing? If you want to learn how to live life to the fullest, this is something you need to do every now and then. You could even give yourself a goal to try something new each day, each week, or each month Subscribe! If you enjoyed the podcast please subscribe and rate it. And of course, share with your friends! Meet Heather Heather Thorkelson is a coach who works with entrepreneurs to grow their impact and visibility while growing their bottom line. She has been location independent for 7 years and runs her businesses from all over the world, including, on occasion, Antarctica. Heather is also the owner of Twin Tracks Expeditions, a polar expedition company. BUT THIS CONVERSATION, YOU GUYS. THIS CONVERSATION! TWO VICTORS HAVING COME THROUGH ABUSIVE CHILDHOODS THE BETTER FOR IT. Resilience, determination, a fuck-you attitude to the stuff that just doesn’t matter, learning to survive from an early age, the sweet relief that comes when you realize you’ve healed enough to allow someone else to have your back, and the amazing qualities we inherited from our abusers. Heather has an absolutely heartbreaking and fascinating backstory and I know so many of us can relate to having to literally raise ourselves because of our screwed up parents. So, so good. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts! IN HEATHER’S WORDS on people pleasing “So I, I’ve never been that way. I’m still very much not that way. I am unable to understand. I’m unable to actually properly empathize with people who, who people please, and especially the extreme ones that compromise themselves so much. I don’t get it because for me, life has always been about survival, so I have to put myself first. Sorry for everyone else, but like I have to put myself first because there’s no safety net, you know, there has never been a safety net.” and even more on people pleasing “…it’s not going to be a popular opinion, but whatever. I think we tend to look at people pleasers as sort of a little bit weak and the extreme people pleasers, we look at as a little bit pathetic because it feels like there’s something missing in them. Why do you have to run around making sure that everybody’s better before you are? That’s fucked up! You’ve got to change that narrative.” on putting yourself first for survival “…when you’re in that kind of fight or flight environment from as long as you can possibly remember, quite frankly, you don’t really give that much of a shit about anyone else, you know? I don’t mean to sound really harsh and nasty like I’m not, I’m, you know, I’m capable of nurturing. I have good relationships…” a recent conversation with her mom “I’m not going to say what you want to hear to make you feel better about the choices that you made. And some people might think that that’s really harsh, but I don’t think it’s harsh. My whole life got massively fucked because of the decisions that she made.” finding the silver linings “Most people don’t ever want to give any credit to their abusive parent. I’m totally happy to give him the credit for this. I got his brains and I got his sense of humor and like what the hell would I do without my brains?” And my very fave… The way that you become the victor of your own story is you write that story. It doesn’t matter what happened before. Everyday that you wake up, you are writing your story. It’s a work in progress. It’s not a done deal. You are not a victim.  You are not that person. You’re not! Whatever thing that happened to you, you are who you choose to be. When you wake up today and tomorrow and the next day and a year from now, you might look back on the first 30 years and go – well –  that was a giant cluster fuck but for the past year, God dammit, I have been doing an amazing job and I am super proud of who I am becoming. How is your body like a startup? Approaching both with a self-directing mindset can help! There’s a great divide between conventional learning and manifesting change — how can we become our own best expert, and what does it mean to become discerning?   We’ve already talked about how the Law of Attraction is total BS. Ali Shapiro helps us deconstruct meritocracy as one example of how privilege can cloud opportunities to grow. Creator of Truce with Food, an “online coaching experience to create lasting food freedom,” and host of the podcast Insatiable, Ali talks about adult development and how changing our mindset and learning are different processes alltogther. In this episode, we discuss being comfortable with uncertainty and how authenticity changes. We talk about how certain lifestyles can dull the sense of self (looking at you, Corporate America!) by prioritizing group harmony over our own needs. What is the link between how we see food and how we understand ourselves? What are we really learning we’re constantly subjecting ourselves to confirmation bias? Change can get a bad rap, but when the dominant cultural narrative isn’t working, it’s more important than ever. Have you ever dreamed of traveling the world as a location-independent entrepreneur? Heather Thorkelson is a successful serial entrepreneur, lifestyle business coach and consultant, founder of the Republic Of Freedom, and co-founder of Twin Tracks Expedition, a polar expedition company. She specializes in creating standout experiences where her clients embrace new adventures and become a better human being. Prior to starting her first company in 2011, Heather worked all over the world in various capacities. Canadian born and without a Plan B, she left for Mexico at 23 to manage 15 staff as the English Director in a private school in the Mexican desert. Later she ventured to South Africa to build a complete social media platform for a HIV non-profit, and then went on to Vancouver where she ‘guided old rich cowboys' through an online auctioning process where they could buy a $3 million dollar crane in Dubai for their business. She was also a sales rep for a drug company for 7 long years, and points out that, thankfully, she could work from a home office. After meeting her Swedish husband in Antarctica while on another project, they established a home base in Sweden and run their companies from wherever they choose to be.   Suffice to say that Heather has had the opportunity to see the world through a different lens. In our conversation today, Heather shares with us a few of her entrepreneurial adventures, what she has learned along the way, and how she is changing the way people think about their lives and their role in leadership and business. We explore the biggest barriers to living a life you love, the power of leading from the periphery, and the use of storytelling and mythology in capturing the attention of your intended audience. Discover the freedom of building your business outside the Matrix! Tune in to hear Heather's first-hand experience and learn how you can live a life you love.     Key Takeaways The biggest things that hold people back are fear of change, fear of the unknown, and lack of confidence. Don't be afraid of not knowing. Just decide ‘I'm going to figure it out'. It's best to lead from the periphery. That way you're not expected to be perfect and people can relate to you on a peer to peer level. In order to be a good leader, you have to be a good follower. You have to be able to take direction and feedback. Check in every 3-4 months, to re-assess your role and position as a leader. The use of story and mythology is what creates resonance and people wanting to follow you. Storytelling about your life isn't about bragging, it's about bringing people along on your journey. One of the most important things you can do is take a stand for something. ‘I believe' statements are a great way of sharing who you are. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Find a relationship with your fear that works for YOU, not your fear. I trust my instincts. They haven’t led me astray yet, not wildly anyways.”   “What are the basic psychological requirements that put you in a good head space so that you can serve others from there.”   “My whole 30s have been an unfolding and learning how to listen to myself.”   “I had dumbed down so many of my senses that I realized when I started to relax on myself that colors started to seem more vibrant and what not.”   “Freedom to me, in the context of who I am in the society that I live in, is the ability to make choices I need to make in order to thrive in this life.”   “Anybody can do something extraordinary. How can an email from a friend in the Mexican desert — swarming with danger, instability, and beauty — turn into the professional opportunity you never knew you needed?   Does it matter what the responsible thing is? Have you ever struggled with the idea that choosing the wrong path might lock you into something forever? Does it seem worth it to weigh the options between guaranteed security and a terrifying challenge? If you’re stuck trying to achieve personal growth, what you might be missing is the space to breathe.     Our work culture makes it difficult to find jobs that pay well, are challenging, and allow opportunity for growth. It’s easy to get roped into something you don’t really want to do. In this episode, we talk about navigating the forking road of choosing a career in an unfulfilling job market.  We discuss the power of having space to breathe, in developing confidence that comes from putting yourself in a situation where you don’t know what the fuck you’re doing, and using it as a chance to learn. Afterall, isn’t it amazing how when push comes to shove, we can really get shit done?   If you just want to get a message across, sometimes it’s okay to tell a little lie if it means somebody doesn’t get hurt. We know, it’s counterintuitive, right? In this episode, we interview Randi Buckley, life coach and creator of the workshop Healthy Boundaries for Kind People. Cultivating boundaries can be difficult if you’re the sort of person who worries about negative reactions. We discuss how it’s possible to navigate conflict with kindness — both inwardly and outwardly. In the same way you can channel your genius into a livelihood (like life coaching, for example!), you can tap into this same reservoir of experience in order to develop a strategy of conflict resolution. It’s not easy to reframe the conversation around setting boundaries. Traditional models don’t work for everyone, which is why we need to frame it around kindness. Sometimes, when things get tough, all you need to be your best self is a little inspiration from the mythology that created you. About Heather: Despite seven years working for a pharmaceutical company that she’d rather forget, she left the golden handcuffs behind with no plan and still managed to do all kinds of grown-up things like buy a house and get a dog and travel the world while building an awesome passion-fueled business where she gets paid to help people. (She’s still in disbelief about that.) 43 countries traversed, 7 continents visited, and 7 countries inhabited outside of her homeland (Canada), Heather is an entirely self-made woman who knows fear, uncertainty, adventure, and personal responsibility (plus a few languages) like the back of her hand. She can often be heard waxing poetic over a craft beer, “It ain’t always easy, but it’s always worth it.” About Leah: She spent years in a corporate job because that’s what she was supposed to do, but was only thinking, “This is as good as it gets?” She decided to learn a new skill (web design) after discovering you don’t need a 4-year/$40k degree to do so, side-hustled to build her business and surpassed her corporate income 3 months after her LEAP. Along with running a rockin’ web design business, Leah now helps freelancers take their skills, escape their soul-sucking jobs and start living life on their terms. When she’s not hanging out online, you can find her eating popcorn, riding her scooter along the French coast, or taking le apèro on a terrace in Biarritz.
