Her books have received dozens of awards and accolades, including starred reviews from Kirkus, The New York Journal of Books, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal , People and Booklist. Her books regularly appear on the lists for best novels of the year. The proud descendant of a butcher and a laundress, Kristan lives in Connecticut with her heroic firefighter husband. They own several badly behaved pets and are often visited by their entertaining and long-lashed children. About PACK UP THE MOON: Joshua and Lauren are the perfect couple. Newly married, they're wildly in love, each on a successful and rewarding career path. Then Lauren is diagnosed with a terminal illness. As Lauren's disease progresses, Joshua struggles to make the most of the time he has left with his wife and to come to terms with his future--a future without the only woman he's ever loved. He's so consumed with finding a way to avoid the inevitable ending that he never imagines his life after Lauren. But Lauren has a plan to keep her husband moving forward. A plan hidden in the letters she leaves him. In those letters, one for every month in the year after her death, Lauren leads Joshua on a journey through pain, anger, and denial. It's a journey that will take Joshua from his attempt at a dinner party for family and friends to getting rid of their bed...from a visit with a psychic medium to a kiss with a woman who isn't Lauren. As his grief makes room for laughter and new relationships, Joshua learns Lauren's most valuable lesson: The path to happiness doesn't follow a straight line. Sometimes heartbreaking, often funny, and always uplifting, this novel from New York Times bestselling author Kristan Higgins illuminates how life's greatest joys are often hiding in plain sight. A conversation about setting with Susan Conley, author of Landslide, and Lauren Fox, author of Send For Me, both published by Knopf. This week we have four Write the Book Prompts, thanks to the generosity of my guests.  From Susan: During the interview, Susan urges writers not to be fooled by "description for description's sake.” Instead of just being happy with beautiful sentences about place, take your setting to the next level with this activity: Go to a place that has the most heat for you in your mind, in your project. Think about that setting and "describe the heck out of it" in a free write for 2-4 minutes. Then in the second half of the prompt, bring a huge problem to that place. Susan suggests that two characters have a big fight in that setting. Suddenly you introduce complexity, which brings in place as conduit for trouble and emotion. Leap from pure description and the beautiful sentence to the catalyzing action. She says she speaks of this with humility, having come to fiction through poetry. She liked writing beautiful sentences. But now she realizes that, in fiction, action really is necessary. It's not enough to describe the ocean. You have to have, in her case, "a teenager imploding in a boat on the ocean." Read "The Colonel," by Caroline Forché. A powerful poem, it begins, "What you have heard is true." Susan offers this line as a prompt for students and asks them to write without censorship for ten minutes. Something about that line often cracks open some big stuff for people.  From Lauren: Write a short scene, and then rewrite the same scene in a different setting. As Lauren mentions during our interview, playing with setting—inventing, changing, renaming, re-placing (literally)—can present opportunities that open up our work in new ways.  She also suggests an exercise that both she and her husband have shared with students; he's an English professor at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Inspired by The Collected Writings of Joe Brainard (Library of America), the prompt is to write a series of sentences, all of which begin with "I remember." Lauren says that beginning with these two words tends to almost magically unlock memories and ideas.  Good luck with your work in the coming week, and tune in next week for another prompt or suggestion.   Music Credit: Aaron Shapiro

Although growing up deeply rooted in the church, it took her witnessing a miracle healing of a friend at a Christian camp for Lauren to begin to embrace a personal relationship with God, not just one on paper. Her mantra of linking moments together to truly experience the living God is not just lip service, but is something she has lived out - taking a leadership position within the Michigan State University Gospel Choir when she doesn’t sing; going to seminary school simply to study the Bible more; being diagnosed with MS but not letting it define her; becoming an author and speaker based on a dream she was given; creating an app of Christian emojis from a joke with a friend; and now working with NBA and NFL players in the world of sports philanthropy to help them leave their fingerprint on the world. In all of these endeavors that are seemingly unrelated, God has linked them together by equipping Lauren to use her voice for evangelism no matter where he places her. As Lauren shares, life with God is like a puzzle piece; you might not know where each piece fits while you’re experiencing it, but when you look back you can truly see God at work and what a masterpiece he can design your life to be if you just “Try God”!  Grab a copy of Lauren's book here: What's In Your Purse website, Amazon or Barnes & Noble Lauren's Christian Emoji App can be found at: Christian Emojis Subscribe to our email list here: OMGP Email List Connect with us at: www.ohmygodpod.com or https://www.facebook.com/groups/ohmygodpod/

Should we always be striving to go harder, go faster, be better in our outdoor endeavors? If we do, what kind of message is that attitude sending? Whom are we impacting when we model those behaviors and goals? What other things do we do or say in an outdoor adventure setting that might impact others’ willingness to try something new or join us on a hike or paddle or bike ride? We are diving into these questions with Lauren Jacobs. Lauren is a lecturer in kinesiology and physical education (KPE) with the College of Education and Human Development at University of Maine. She also coordinates the outdoor leadership concentration and minor within KPE. Before landing at UMaine, Lauren worked in the nonprofit sector helping increase outdoor sport opportunities and access for Maine kids, and was also a PE teacher, which wound up informing her masters thesis research into recess weather policies in Maine schools. Lauren’s list of outdoor leadership credentials is noteworthy: a registered Maine Guide; a certified paddling instructor; a cross-country ski instructor; a registered yoga instructor. And yet, she is also someone who has spent the last several years ‘recovering’ from the intensity and relentless drive she developed as a professional nordic ski racer. As Lauren puts it, “there are other kinds of improvement, and there are other kinds of engagement,” and I couldn’t agree more.Instead of fixating on FKTs or Strava trophies, maybe it’s time to focus on expanding opportunities and improving accessibility in the outdoors. Maybe it’s time to advocate for more outdoor time and physical activity in public schools. That sounds like the kind of ‘performance enhancement’ I can get behind.Links to some of the things Lauren and I talked about:Lauren’s University of Maine profileOutdoor Leadership Program online, and on InstagramLauren’s thesis on recess and physical education weather policiesCraftsbury Green Racing ProjectMaine Trail FinderAct Out with Aislinn Sarnacki - One Minute Hikes (archive here)And if COVID-19 still has you feeling boxed in and stir crazy, you’ll enjoy this special bonus I found - click here to access ‘Physical Activity in Small Spaces’, a fantastic resource developed by MaineHealth using Lauren’s content. It may come as a surprise to discover that in the 2019-2020 season, (Shakespeare aside) Lauren Gunderson is the most produced playwright in America. She’s achieved this in no small part by putting women’s stories at the center of her work. And she doesn’t just create the lone female protagonist—she has women interacting with other women-- sharing dreams, hopes, disappointments and successes. Her protagonists who are smart, funny, and determined and if they’re involved with science—so much the better. Science is a topic Gunderson returns to again and again in her work. As Lauren said in our interview, “I think theater is made for the biggest questions we can manage, and science like religion, like the arts-- is the thing that says, “What are we doing here?” That literally was the question at the center of her play Silent Sky that was recently produced at Fords’ Theater in Washington DC (and partially funded by the NEA). Silent Sky is based on a turn of the century astronomer named Henrietta Leavitt, who worked at the Harvard Observatory. Although she is little-known, Leavitt’s work and discoveries are crucial to our current understanding of the stars and the universe. In this podcast, Lauren talks about Silent Sky, her adaption of Peter Pan (in which Wendy is an aspiring scientist), her love of theater and science, and most crucially, what changes when women take the center stage.

As Lauren explains, "Initially I reached out to particular phone psychics in search of on air readings but our conversations were so elaborate and interesting I thought they each deserved their own episode. I ask your respect and openness in hearing these conversations as my guests were very open and vulnerable about how they interpret what they do and I appreciate their honesty whether or not our philosophies align. Unexpectedly these conversations opened many troubling and exciting concepts of mental health, the future and how we interact with one another and ourselves. I hope you enjoy!!" We’ve got a fantastic episode for you all this week, featuring Philly’s own Lauren Nolan-Sellers. Lauren was a school teacher but quickly found herself staring out her classroom window, feeling like she was missing out on the world. After having a life-altering event where Lauren almost died, she decided NOW was her time to follow her vision. She dug into her desire to do interior design and the rest has now become history. As Lauren says during our interview, “life presents you with opportunity and you have the chance to rise and meet it, or not.” About Lauren Nolan-Sellers Awarding-winning interior decorator, Lauren Nolan-Sellers exploded onto the scene in 2012 co-founding Trust the Vision Decor, a residential design firm based out of Greater Philadelphia, PA. She, along with her partner Wendy, have imparted their unique design sense and straight forward business systems to create a flawless experience serving clients up and down the east coast. Since the inception of Trust the Vision Decor, the pair has sky-rocketed to success with a client list that includes celebrities, media personalities, and professional athletes. Lauren has become one the premier designers in their region and amassed over 30,000 followers on Facebook while continuing to demonstrate exponential growth appearing in local, regional, and national media outlets including articles in Philadelphia Magazine, a segment on Fox's Good Day Philadelphia, and a profile in Curve, a national women's magazine. As an actively working interior design professional, Lauren continues to find success taking on new clients and large scale projects. In experiencing her immense growth, she searched for a way to "pay it forward" and help other designers/ decorators gain a massive head start in their own businesses. This search culminated in the formulation of Aspiring Designers, a comprehensive program for designers and decorators that teaches them to implement Lauren's world class business systems and strategies so they can catapult themselves to success. This all-encompassing program nick-named the "Design Business in a Box" pulls the curtain back and teaches you the exact systems Lauren uses so that you can live the life you want and create a sustainable, profitable design business. The mission is simple: To help designers and decorators grow & scale a design business that consistently generates 5-figures or more a month without sacrificing your time and freedom even if you've got no idea where to begin. Emotional eating gets such a bad rap sometimes doesn't it? As if we could completely control emotional eating? And should be controlling it. As Lauren mentions- food is emotional. If you expect a life where zero emotional eating takes places, then your gonna have a bad time. You are setting yourself up to some unrealistic expectations, which leads to feelings of guilt, shame and all those feelings that keep you stuck in an unhealthy relationship with food. The truth is, no matter how focused and disciplined you are with your fitness and food routine, at some point you will "use" food in a way other than for pure nutrition and fuel. Sometimes you're just going to want the extra cake. Sometimes your going to eat so much pasta your tummy hurts. These are not faults of yours that need to be banished- this is life! Sometimes in life, when we enjoy something, it can lead to over consumption. And that is totally cool. We shouldn't try to banish this, just embrace it when we truly need it. That's where your intuition powers need to come in handy. When you are using it too frequently, and it's compromising your health, that a situation that may warrant some extra help. If it's used from time to time, and you acknowledge why it is you're using food to help you feel better- that's the intuitive eating difference. So join us, as we dive right into it! Please leave a heart felt comment so we can connect and hear from you! If you have any questions or comments, we're happy to hear and discuss those on air so you can have a voice in the conversation as well. Michelle welcomes her dear friend and yoga teacher to the podcast today - don't call her a guru! Lauren Star practices meditation, mindfulness and yoga - and she thought that wedding planning was going to be a breezy dream. Well, it wasn't! What?? It was overwhelming and Lauren and her partner didn't know what they were getting into. Like we always say, You don't know what you don't know! So, we talk to Lauren about her experiences wedding planning. And a lot about why she is so happy that Michelle was her planner, and how important having a planner actually turned out to be. Michelle fawns over Lauren a bit too, because this lovey-dovey feeling is mutual! The best kind. Big Takeaways First, we had a listener question to answer regarding potted plants, greenery for wedding decor. We think that the pot is very important in this case - is a terracotta pot from Home Depot something that fits in with the ceremony decor, particularly if it's an indoor venue? Think about that. Also, remember that a beautiful potted plant might cost just as much or more than a centerpiece or altar piece from a florist. We think greenery can look cool and pretty and photogenic, but err on the side of more, rather than less. Make sure the overall look is lush and has lots of height and type variation. Good luck! Succulents: they aren't just trendy! They're also sturdy and can be colorful. They transport easily and are easy DIY projects. They aren't too expensive and you can take them home with you after the wedding. Even the most easy-going couple needs to actually plan a little. Ok, a lot, to be honest. You can have a laid-back potluck wedding in your backyard, your friends can bring flowers and cake, and you can ad lib your vows if you want...but weddings still cost money. They take planning. You need to talk to your partner - even if it's overwhelming and you don't know where the heck to start - you need to talk about the budget and the guestlist when you begin. Minimum! Money talk can stress people out, for sure. As Lauren watched her budget inflate, she turned to her yoga practice to deal with the stress. Also, she recognized that they needed HELP. In the form of a wedding planner. Lauren looked at weight loss and getting in shape while wedding planning, for the first time in her life. And instead of obsessing over it in an unhealthy way, she learned lots of great information and felt that the whole experience was really educational and empowering. Which is awesome! Family. Lauren and her fiance were blown away by how much their family wanted to be a part of their wedding. They were surprised by how much people wanted to participate and how much people CARED. In the end, everyone got to pitch in and the whole thing was a group effort. Lauren felt closer to her family after the wedding, and felt so so grateful. People want to help, we encourage you to say YES! What's an easy way to calm down and focus? Lauren tells us how to simply set your cell phone timer and sit down. Be quiet. Breathe. 2 minutes, y'all! It goes a long way! It's why we do it!” - Christy, on the reason for the season “It's weird that you are sitting on Lauren's lap while you are interviewing her.” - Christy, to Michelle “Are you considered a ‘guru'?” “You are to me!” - Michelle. We get gurus as guests, y'all. Personal gurus. “We're thinking maybe you deal with stress a little differently than our ‘typical' brides…or me. I mostly just eat frozen pizza on the floor and cry a lot.” - Christy, digging deep “The most important thing is that we feel good on the day, that we feel in love and we get to connect with the people that are there to support us. And that hopefully, that vibe rubs off on everyone that is there.” Lauren, on priorities “We really needed someone to plan this wedding. We were in over our heads.” - Lauren, on why she hired Michelle “I have meat, I have coffee. I'm not a saint by any means.” - Lauren, describing how overall health is important, especially when wedding planning “Any time we would notice ourselves getting obsessed about something, we would be like, no, this is not the right direction.” - Lauren, not sweating the small stuff “Ok! That was great. I feel very calm. I feel gratitude.” - Michelle, wrapping it up! She Did It Her Way

How has your business bettered your lifestyle? Improved your mental and physical health? Or motivated you to put yourself, and your well-being first? For Lauren Benbassat a health scare prompted her and her husband to create Mele, which offers all-natural meal replacement smoothies loaded with ingredients like real fruits, nuts, vegetables, and whey protein. These ingredients are freeze-dried and crushed into a powder, and when you add water, you have a filling smoothie with all the benefits of a perfectly balanced nutritional meal. Her inspiration for Mele came about when she moved to New York from Florida to pursue a career in marketing. With nothing but her bags and determination, she grinded her way up the corporate ladder, and while success became the pay off, her health declined. After her early morning workouts, she would run head first into work, with only a coffee and office snacks to nourish her for the day. She said she became constantly exhausted because she never stopped to properly refuel her body with the nutrients she needed to sustain her active lifestyle. She noticed her husband, who was a corporate attorney, experiencing the same fatigue as he tried to cram a “healthy” lifestyle into his long and unpredictable work schedule, too. She started to feel her body changing and began gaining weight in her stomach and hips. She knew it was probably due to her poor diet and went to the doctor to get some blood work done. When she was told her cholesterol and triglyceride levels were through the roof, it gave her the jolt she needed to finally take action in correcting her diet. She started researching the ingredients inside her food, and found that a lot of products and ingredients were synthetic, didn’t meet any of the macro and micro nutrients that our bodies needed, and the foods that did weren’t flavorful. Committed to the goal of improving her health, she and her husband decided to take it upon themselves to create healthy meals that fit into their hectic world, and started to build Mele. Initially building their company for themselves, they were extremely dedicated on making a transparent brand with high quality ingredients. This mindfulness can be seen in the smallest of ingredients like their decision to include the powerful and natural brain food, sunflower lecithin. Most food products contain soy lecithin because it's cheaper. However, Lauren didn’t want to spend a dime on it because it is bad for our thyroids, which was a health issue for her mother. Another careful measure they took was making sure the protein used was grass-fed, hormone-free, and an isolate protein. The benefits of using isolate protein is that it's casein-free, so it doesn’t cause indigestion and irritate people who are lactose intolerance. They were also particular about sourcing, and created all of their recipes from scratch because they wanted their meals to have their personal touch. They contacted different produce manufacturers, and played with fresh ingredients to create balanced macro-nutritional meals that had the perfect carb-fat-protein ratio. This was a process that her husband took the reins of, while she focused on correcting the taste like suggesting peanut butter to add smoothness, or pineapple to cover up earthy flavors created by wheat and barley grass. Lauren also used her expertise in marketing and design to create the logo, website, and packaging, while also handling the company’s social media presence. As Lauren took charge of the creative, her husband handled Mele’s finances, inventory, as well as the liability and insurance aspects of the company due to his job as a corporate lawyer and his CPA in accounting. To see if their side passion had legs, they sent out anonymous samples and surveys to their family and friends as a form a market research. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and they gained the confidence to release their product on the mass market. After taking some of their savings and investing in a small product run, they found that they public loved their brand, too, and they quickly sold out. Since then, they have continued to grow as a business, and expanded into a company whose wholesome brand and packaging have attracted the likes of Anthropologie and Amazon! Though Mele has turned into a success and Lauren’s new full time job, it was painful for her to transition from corporate employee to entrepreneur because she truly loved her job. Mele wasn’t intended to become anything more than a hobby or side hustle, so the level of responsibility it began to demand was unexpected. Even though she was honest with her job about Mele’s conception from the beginning, she saw that they were sadden by her departure. Her coworkers became her family, so to say goodbye to them was emotional. What got her through that tough transition was remembering the chance her father took when he started his own business, too. Their family had to make several sacrifices when he left his corporate job, but as an adult she became inspired by his passion and belief in his dreams. With him and her husband as her support system, she knew she had to take that leap, and see what road her brand would lead her down. Her first day as an entrepreneur was overwhelming and daunting as the reality of her decision kicked in, but she picked up the phone, started asking questions, and figuring it all out one project at a time. It’s good to have goals, but you still have to take one step at a time…” – Lauren Benbassat “Through the process my passions were pivoting…of course I can…keep this job that I know is there and I enjoy parts of it…but I think in the back of my mind, I would of always wondered what if my company could of gone somewhere…I’ll never know if I don’t try.” –Lauren Benbassat “I’m so much more capable than I realized. I’ve struggled with imposter syndrome where I think I don’t make qualifications, and I’m not good enough…but in launching a business it was just such a confidence boost that I think I really needed to prove to myself that I was able and I could figure anything out.” –Lauren Benbassat “Tell your story.
