"Whoever's responsible - no doubt they know that there are now lots of people wanting to put a bullet in their head. If it were me, if I was going to do something like this, I would make pretty darn sure that nobody could trace it back to me."On 19 July 2015, an anonymous group calling themselves the "Impact Team" announced via an online post that they'd managed to obtain a large cache of information from website Ashley Madison's parent company, Avid Life Media. The mysterious hacker(s) posted just a small fraction of the stolen data, along with a demand: for Avid Life Media to take down Ashley Madison, a website dedicated to facilitating infidelity, or else they'd release the rest of the data (which included user information).Over the next several weeks, the threat of this leak loomed large over users, while Avid Life Media insisted that they'd done enough to plug up their security holes. It wasn't until mid-August that the "Impact Team" made good on their threat...Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3266604/advertisement

Note: Want to see the list of newsletters we like that Manoush mentions in this week's podcast? Find it in the Note to Self newsletter here. Spending just one day offline can make you feel like you missed 100 important stories. As you're trying to stay abreast of the 100 even newer, as-important stories/memes/investigations/cute animal videos... well, it starts to feel like this: Or, you know, this: Luckily, there's someone who devotes hours every day to helping us with that quandary. Caitlin Dewey is the Digital Culture Critic at the Washington Post. In addition to her regular column she also sends out a daily newsletter called "Links I would GChat you if we were friends." It's exactly what it sounds like: a couple dozen hand-picked links of the day's top online stories, curated by someone whose job it is to have her finger on the pulse of the Internet world at all times. In this week's episode, Manoush sits down with Caitlin to talk about the top five digital culture stories from the past year, so that you can end 2015 feeling up to date without having to sift through thousands of old links. 5. The Zola Story A 150-tweet story by Aziah "Zola" Wells trended for two straight days on Twitter (longer than the Paris attacks). If you missed it (or gave up on it), you weren't alone. It was long and twisted – an account of a wild weekend in Florida involving sex work, suicide attempts, and murder. Then, in the following months, both Caitlin and a reporter at Rolling Stone produced reported pieces looking into which aspects of the story were true, why people responded the way they did, and why it all matters. You can check out the original tweets – which have since been deleted – here. 4. The Dress Back in February, it seemed for a moment like a civil war might break out between pretty much everyone on the Internet. In question "The Dress" as blue and black and those who saw it as white and gold. BuzzFeed writer Cate Holderness discovered the meme on Tumblr, and her initial post was so wildly popular that BuzzFeed put two editorial teams on The Dress beat, producing dozens of stories on the topic and garnering tens of millions of page views. (For the record, it was actually blue and black. Supposedly.) Just in case you'd found a really comfortable rock to hide under. (BuzzFeed) 3. This Novel-length Article About Code We know, we know. You heard about Paul Ford's 38,000-word magnum opus on code from this June and you totally had every intention of reading it... except that finding time for a book-length essay on a tricky topic isn't always easy. It's OK – this one is an evergreen. Consider this another opportunity to dig deep into a serious demystification of coding and the tech world that we all interact with every day, but don't always know all that much about. On a plane home for the holidays six months later. 2. The Reddit Revolt Known as the "front page of the internet," Reddit has long been an incredible source of information and evolving news stories – but it's also unfortunately been a place where harassment campaigns take root. That started to change this summer, when Reddit started cracking down on hate speech and harassment. Things really came to a head when the site fired Victoria Taylor, who ran the AMA ("Ask Me Anything") section. Following her termination, Reddit's moderators – unpaid individuals who help run the site's various communities – organized a strike against the site for an entire week. The controversy and its fallout has fueled an ongoing debate about free speech, as well as the question of who benefits when users on sites like Reddit and Facebook effectively donate their labor. 1. The Ashley Madison Hack Online leaks are nothing new. But the Ashley Madison hack was the first high-profile privacy breach that threatened to destroy the relationships, personal lives, and careers of the 37 million people with accounts – most of whom never actually engaged in an extramarital affair, given that there were barely any women using the site at all. Caitlin describes this #1 tech story of the year as a watershed moment for digital privacy – listen to the podcast to hear why. Episode 13 - “Ashley Madison Hack: The Impact of Affairs, Technology, & Schadenfreude on Committed Relationships”: Part 2 Looking for emotional connection outside a romantic relationship might mean game over for some people, or it could just be a game some people play. In Part 2 of this episode, Wendy, Jenni, & Candace continue their conversation on the Ashley Madison hack and what it says about technology's power to prevent and distract from intimacy. These days, with the fantasy of an affair being just a click away, how do we stay focused on our partners?? How does anyone trust their partners - especially if they've been hurt before? Perhaps the answer to it all is hidden in Shakespeare's Sonnet one sixteen… tune in to find out! **Correction: in this episode Miss Jenni refers to an essay on UnMonogamy by Camille Paglia - which is incorrect. Episode 12 - “Ashley Madison Hack, Part 1: The Impact of Affairs, Technology, & Schadenfreude on Committed Relationships” Due to hackers exposing millions of AshleyMadison.com users, recent conversations around the globe have been more focused on technology and infidelity in committed relationships. Are online sites like Ashley Madison just the new personal ads? What constitutes an affair? Could even fantasizing become forbidden fruit? Is sexual monogamy the only way of expressing loyalty and commitment in long-term relationships? Should a partner's infidelity always be a traumatic event or is un-monogamy just another untamable part of human nature? In this episode, Dr. Wendy and I are joined by Candace Dale Mckenzie (www.candacemckenzie.net) to take a closer look at the potential impact of the Ashley Madison Hack and the psychological consequences this cyber crime might have on modern romance. www.DoctorWendyOConnor.com e: DrWendyOConnor@gmail.com fb: https://www.facebook.com/askdrwendy tw: @askDrWendy www.JenniJVWilson.com e: JenniferJVWilson@gmail.com fb: www.facebook.com/JenniJVWilson tw: @JenniJVWilson Resources: Recommended Ashley Madison Hack Coverage - http://www.wired.com/tag/ashley-madison/ AshleyMadison.com Esther Perel http://www.estherperel.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2AUat93a8Q http://www.ted.com/talks/esther_perel_rethinking_infidelity_a_talk_for_anyone_who_has_ever_loved?language=en Rupert Holmes - Escape (The Piña Colada Song) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TazHNpt6OTo Frank Sinatra - All or Nothing At All https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfeBAo-08c0 Peaches & Herb - Reunited https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaem79tZ6W4 Jill Sobule - The Girl In The Affair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnfszQjELrQ Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Faf1ch7Q9XE

Internet hackers recently released detailed records on millions of people registered with cheating website Ashley Madison, which acts as a network for users to facilitate extramarital affairs. The data also revealed that over 15,000 of the email addresses used to register accounts could be traced back to U.S. government and military servers. In light of the data breach, we'll question whether or not it was ethical for the hackers to expose the cheaters, and address "social norms" regarding cheating, open/non-traditional relationships, monogamy and polyamory.
