The Burning Forest: India's War Against the Maoists (Verso, 2019) by Nandini Sundar is an empathetic, moving account of what drives indigenous peasants to support armed struggle despite severe state repression, including lives lost, homes and communities destroyed. Over the past decade, the heavily forested,mineral-rich region of Bastar in central India has emerged as one of the most militarized sites in the country. The government calls the Maoist insurgency the “biggest security threat” to India. In 2005, a state-sponsored vigilante movement, the Salwa Judum, burnt hundreds of villages, driving their inhabitants into state-controlled camps, drawing on counterinsurgency techniques developed in Malaysia, Vietnam and elsewhere. Apart from rapes and killings, hundreds of ‘surrendered' Maoist sympathisers were conscripted as auxiliaries. The conflict continues to this day, taking a toll on the lives of civilians, security forces and Maoist cadres. In 2007, Sundar and others took the Indian government to the Supreme Court over the human rights violations arising out ofthe conflict. In a landmark judgment, the Court in 2011 banned state supportfor vigilantism. The Burning Forest describes this brutal war in the heart of India, and what it tells us about the courts, media and politics of the country. The result is a granular and critical ethnography of Indian democracy over a decade. Nandini Sundar is a Professor of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University, and has been visiting Bastar for over 25 years. Her first book, Subalterns and Sovereigns: An Anthropological History of Bastar (1854-1996) is an authoritative account of Bastar's colonial and post-colonial past. In her talk, Sister Nandini shares that “In the Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons, our founder, Paramahansa Yogananda gave ‘how-to-live' principles and the science of Kriya Yoga meditation so that each of us can develop a personal relationship with God — one that's very real, where we feel Divine Mother's love for us, her caring and understanding. My guest today is Nandini Das, a Professor of Early Modern Literature & Culture at Exeter College at Oxford University, and author of the book “Courting India” which is an account of England's first ambassador to the Mughal court, Sir Thomas Roe, who was tasked with building a relationship with the emperor Jahangir in order to build English trade with India.  It's a fascinating book because it takes everything you thought you knew about the historic relationship between the two countries and completely turns it on its head. The English are poor and humble supplicants, whilst the Indian court is wealthy, powerful and very much in charge of directing the shape & direction of the relationship.  In today's episode, we talk about this first British embassy to India, how successful (or not) it really was, how it sowed the seeds for the British empire in India & beyond, and we touch upon the current relationship between the two countries, as well as hearing Nandini's favourite books & reading recommendations. 'Maitri' - Silicon Valley's Outreach for Assistance: In February 1991, a group of women came together to create a lifeline for South Asian women facing domestic violence, marking the birth of Maitri. Recognizing the service gap for immigrant South Asian women, they saw a need for culturally and linguistically accessible support, leading to Maitri's founding.  Today, Maitri remains dedicated to bridging this gap and continues to answer the calls for help that started over three decades ago. Since 1991, Maitri has empowered thousands of survivors and emerged as a cornerstone for the South Asian community. Maitri offers holistic assistance through volunteer training, comprehensive resource guides, partnerships with legal and domestic violence organizations, and various programs and services. These include a Helpline, Peer Counseling, Transitional Housing, Legal Advocacy, Economic Empowerment, Individual Therapy, Support Groups, Community Outreach and Education, and Emergency Shelter Referrals.  Maitri believes healthy relationships are built on mutual respect, open communication, and individual empowerment. All of their efforts are geared toward helping South Asians make informed choices. South Asia's Domestic Violence Problem: High Prevalence: South Asia faces higher rates of intimate partner violence, with 37% of women affected, exceeding the global average of 30% Economic Dependence: Financial dependency among South Asian women, with 58% not participating in income-related decisions, increases their vulnerability to domestic abuse Child Marriages: South Asia has the world's highest child marriage rates, with 30% of girls marrying before turning 18, contributing to heightened risks of domestic violence. * Data cited from internet sources and may not be 100% updated Maitri's Mission: Their mission is to empower South Asian survivors of domestic violence to lead lives of dignity and self-sufficiency through holistic programs and enable healthy relationships and gender equity through community education, engagement, and advocacy. "Violence against women, gender abuse, gender inequality – you find it everywhere. But it's our duty to stand against it." Nandini Ray In this Episode: In this episode, we explore the remarkable journey of Maitri, an organization dedicated to supporting South Asian victims of domestic violence. From its modest beginnings with a single phone line in a kitchen over 30 years ago, Maitri has grown into a powerful force offering various services, including legal advocacy, immigration help, housing, and more. Born from the empathy of a group of South Asian women in Silicon Valley, Maitri has evolved to have 18 staff members and around 50 committed volunteers, making it a significant source of support for the South Asian community. Nandini Ray shares her experiences with misogyny and domestic violence in India, emphasizing that this issue transcends class and culture. Through her heartfelt stories, we learn about three individuals who, thanks to Maitri, have been able to change their life trajectories. We hear tales of a mother reclaiming her self-worth, a young person escaping a forced marriage, and a man challenging gender norms by seeking help against abuse. While one episode can't possibly capture the full impact of Maitri's work, the organization stands out as a shining example of hope and resilience in the face of domestic violence. Join us for an episode filled with inspiration, poignant accounts, and a deep look into an issue affecting global communities. Nandini Venkateswaran MD is an anterior segment surgeon and clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School and key opinion leader in ophthalmology. She has had a meteoric rise and is frequently seen at the podium at ophthalmology meetings across the USA and contributing to the advancement of our field with consulting activities. As someone who has participated in ophthalmic consulting for more than two decades (back when I had a baby face!), I know that Nandini's achievements are truly outstanding considering that she is still in her early 30s. She is one to watch and there is no doubt that in the coming years she will play a prominent leadership role in our field. We talk about many things in this podcast such as how you can also pave a path to the podium and get involved with the future of our field, but also how to keep up with new surgical techniques and technologies. She brings a high degree of energy and a keen insight that makes for a fascinating podcast. I am sure that you will truly enjoy it.

The Chola dynasty of centuries-old saw the rise of popular and determined kings that consolidated lands in southern and eastern India, the Indian Ocean, and even as far as south-east Asia. Their influence was unparalleled at the time, with King Rajaraja Chola I setting up a political, social, cultural, and economic landscape that took the empire through almost a dozen centuries.  But before Rajaraja Chola, there was an internal war for power and control -- and two of its central characters may have been -- Nandini, a mysterious woman that made it to the top of the Chola food chain, and Kundavai, who was the sister of Rajaraja Chola. History, legend, myth, and fiction make the stories around Nandini and Kundavai a bit blurry -- who were they and how did they rise to power? Did they even hold real power, during a time when being born male was paramount to all else? And more importantly… did they even exist?  We bring on board guest Anirudh Kanisetti to help us navigate through the murky waters of Chola history. Anirudh is an Indian historian, author of 'Lords of the Deccan: Southern India from the Chalukyas to the Cholas', and host of 'Echoes of India: A History Podcast', right here on IVM Podcasts network.  About Anirudh: Anirudh Kanisetti is the award-winning author of Lords of the Deccan, a new history of medieval South India. He received the Tata Literature Live! Best Nonfiction Book of the Year award in 2022, and was featured in THE WEEK's 40 Under 40 list for India's most promising creatives, as well as Open The Magazine's Open Minds 2022 Soft Power list. His research has received grants from the Princeton Center for Digital Humanities and the India Foundation for the Arts. His writings and work have been featured in The Hindu, The New Indian Express, and LiveMint, among others. He writes the weekly Thinking Medieval column for ThePrint. Haggling with Indian customs officials and presenting a mighty emperor with the distinctly unimpressive gifts of a cheap sword and a broken carriage are two particularly inauspicious moments that feature in the tale told by historian and New Generation Thinker Nandini Das in her new book about the four years Thomas Roe spent as James VI and I's ambassador to the Mughal Empire. Peter Frankopan has previously written about The Silk Roads and the First Crusade. Now he has turned his attention to writing a 5 billion year long history of the natural world, geography and climate change and the influence that these have had on shaping empires and civilisations. This week, we're traveling back to one of our favorite sites for curiosity: the ancient Mediterranean. Professors Sarah Derbew and Nandini Pandey join Jonathan to discuss how people across the region experienced cultural diversity; how they related to—and set themselves apart from—their neighbors; and what it looks like to approach the ancient past on its own terms rather than filtered through contemporary assumptions.Sarah Derbew is an assistant professor of Classics at Stanford University. She writes, teaches, and speaks widely about ancient Greece's literary and visual heritage, considering its representations of black people that nimbly provoke - and cut through - modern hierarchies. You can follow her on Twitter @BlackAntiquity, and at www.sarahderbew.com. Her new book Untangling Blackness in Greek Antiquity is out now, and you can purchase it using the coupon code UBGA2022.  Nandini Pandey is an associate professor of classics at Johns Hopkins University working to diversify our study of the ancient world and advocate for historically underrepresented students and scholars. She writes, teaches, and speaks on Roman culture, Latin literature, ancient race and identity, and the ways that all of these have shaped and can continue to speak to modern societies across the world. Her first book was about The Poetics of Power in Augustan Rome; she's currently writing a second book on Roman diversity for Princeton University Press and a third, for Yale, on how classics can enrich our modern lives. You can follow her on Twitter @global_classics.Want to learn more about race in classical antiquity? Professor Pandey recommends Rebecca Futo Kennedy's writing.  Follow us on Instagram and Twitter @CuriousWithJVN to join the conversation. Jonathan is on Instagram and Twitter @JVN and @Jonathan.Vanness on Facebook. Transcripts for each episode are available at JonathanVanNess.com. Our executive producer is Erica Getto. Russia did the unthinkable this week by invading Ukraine; creating the gravest crisis in Europe since the second world war. The GOP wants you to believe it happened because Joe Biden is weak. The reality is far more complicated and has more to do with decades of Russian anger over a 1990 promise from Germany. Then there's the Trump factor. The former president and now the GOP keeps pushing Putin's propaganda. Later, Nandini Jammi joins Mea Culpa to discuss the disinformation economy and how this stuff gets monetized across the right wing media machine.
