In the bustling streets of entrepreneurship, where passion, purpose, and profit intersect, one name stands out: Nichole Daher. As the visionary founder of "Success on the Spectrum," Nichole embarked on a transformative journey fueled by her unwavering dedication to make a difference in the lives of individuals on the autism spectrum. Nichole's story begins with a deeply personal connection to autism. Raising a stepdaughter on the spectrum, she witnessed firsthand the challenges and triumphs unique to individuals with autism. This ignited a passion within her to create more access to care for children who need it most. Armed with a mother's determination and fueled by her passion, Nichole set out to create something extraordinary—a business that not only generated profit but also made a profound impact on society. Thus, "Success on the Spectrum" was born— a complete Autism Treatment center that provides ABA therapy, Speech therapy, and Occupational therapy to children with Autism. Through innovative programs, tailored mentorship, and collaborative partnerships, Nichole's vision began to take shape. "Success on the Spectrum" became a beacon of hope for individuals and families navigating the challenges of autism. She opened 2 different locations in Houston, Texas hoping to offer children like her daughter a pathway to fulfillment and achievement. However, Nichole's journey was not without its hurdles. She faced guilt about her ever-growing waitlist after her 2 clinics were full. She quickly realized that the unmet demand for Autism Treatment services was not going to be fixed by one person's effort. Fueled by her unwavering commitment to her cause, Nichole founded SOS Franchising- the first Autism Treatment franchise in the US. This groundbreaking venture is dedicated to providing support, resources, and opportunities for entrepreneurs to open their own Success On The Spectrum treatment center. Driven by her mission, Nichole tirelessly worked to build a franchise model that balanced profitability with purpose. She understood that sustainable success required not only financial gains but also high-quality services for kids. With this mindset, Nichole infused every aspect of her company with intentionality, ensuring that every decision aligned with her values of inclusivity and empowerment. Today, Nichole Daher continues to inspire entrepreneurs and activists alike. Her story serves as a testament to the transformative power of passion, purpose, and profit—proving that with dedication and determination, anything is possible. As she continues to drive change and create opportunities for individuals on the autism spectrum, Nichole remains a beacon of hope, lighting the way for a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow.

On the Autism Spectrum, there are some people who are never able to speak more than a few words. The inability to verbally communicate indicates no lack of intelligence and it can be incredibly frustrating for those who have much to offer but whose thoughts and ideas are locked inside their own minds.Among these shrouded geniuses is 19-year-old Jacob Rock, son of Wild Honey Foundation Founder and Director, Paul Rock. Jacob's two lone spoken words are “yes,” and “eat,” but during the pandemic he was able to focus on his one finger iPad typing and his inner dialogue began to blossom into multi-syllable, complex thoughts, views and poetry. Jacob also typed that he was composing a symphony. To manifest this vision, Paul solicited the help of Wild Honey Musical Director Rob Laufer. Rob and Jacob began collaborating, composing and mind-melding and the result is a 71 minute symphonic piece called Unforgettable Sunrise which will be performed on September 30th, 2023 with a full orchestra from the USC Thornton School of Music at The Alex Theater in Los Angeles.Jacob's piece is autobiographical and it chronicles his struggles with distress, discomfort, stomach pain, self harm, frustration and ultimately, peace, finding his voice and the joy of creation.Paul and Rob join us to share their process in facilitating Jacob's self-expression. Paul brings his fullest heart to a reading of Jacob's poetry and together, our guests illuminate how we may all be able to learn the most from those who say the least. Current treatments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) seek to reduce symptoms that interfere with daily functioning and quality of life. ASD affects each person differently, meaning that people with ASD have unique strengths and challenges and different treatment needs. Therefore, treatment plans usually involve multiple professionals and are catered toward the individual. There are no medications that treat the core symptoms of ASD. Some medications treat co-occurring symptoms that can help people with ASD function better. For example, medication might help manage high energy levels, inability to focus, or self-harming behavior, such as head banging or hand biting. Medication can also help manage co-occurring psychological conditions, such as anxiety or depression, in addition to medical conditions such as seizures, sleep problems, or stomach or other gastrointestinal problems. It is important to work with a doctor who has experience in treating people with ASD when considering the use of medication.Interventions:The most common developmental therapy for people with ASD is Speech and Language Therapy.Speech and Language Therapy helps to improve the person's understanding and use of speech and language. Some people with ASD communicate verbally. Others may communicate using signs, gestures, pictures, or an electronic communication device.Occupational Therapy teaches skills that help the person live as independently as possible. Skills may include dressing, eating, bathing, and relating to people.Ref: https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/treatment.html#autism #autistic #actuallyautistic #autisticadults #autisticteens #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #autismparents #autismpride #asd #pride #loveislove #autismawareness

John Summers is an historian, and the father of a 12-year-old autistic son. He holds strong feelings about Applied Behavior Analysis after many years of stressful experiences for his son, and for him as a father. He also has major concerns about the institutionalization of ABA in autism treatment, and bureaucracies that hold significant power over how disabled individuals are educated and treated. John discusses these issues from the perspective of an historian interested in the development and domination of systems for disabled people, that are too often dehumanizing , as well as the from his experience as an engaged and loving father working to do the best for his son. Kelly speaks with Anna Merlan, Senior Staff Writer with Vice, about a controversial autism treatment that's about to become a big business - and hurt desperate parents in the process. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
My guest this week is Sue Simmons. Sue is on a mission to change the way our society views and addresses Autism. For decades, frazzled parents of autistic children have waited anxiously for treatment, feeling helpless and dependent. Sue proposes a new paradigm armed with training and knowledge: Not only are parents able to make dramatic changes in their children's lives, but they are ideally suited to do so. Her refreshing approach puts parents back in the driver's seatwith a focus on building safe emotional relationships rather than only seeking compliance. In this episode, you'll be hearing from the mother of a now-adult son with ASD. Sue and I discuss Autism and related disorders. We learn about their journey (she and her son) and how it changed her perspective on what's really important when it comes to treatment and support for kids and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Jeanne Simons devoted her career as a social worker and educator to the study, treatment, and care of children with autism. In 1955, she established the Linwood Children's Center in Ellicott City, Maryland, one of the first schools dedicated to children with autism. Her Linwood Model, developed there, was widely adopted and still forms the basis for a variety of autism intervention techniques. Incredibly—although unknown at the time—Jeanne was herself autistic. Behind the Mirror: The Story of a Pioneer in Autism Treatment and Her Work with Children on the Spectrum (Johns Hopkins UP, 2021) reveals the remarkable tale of Simons. In this interview I speak with Dr. Sabine Oishi, who co-author this book with Simons and also the book, the hidden child. Sabine Oishi, PhD, was educated first as a teacher and then as a child psychologist at the University of Geneva. She earned her PhD in child development and family therapy from the University of Maryland. She has worked as a teacher, researcher, and therapist both in Switzerland and the United States. With Jeanne Simons, she was the coauthor of The Hidden Child. Dr. Yakir Englander is the National Director of Leadership programs at the Israeli-American Council. He also teaches at the AJR. Children with autism have a wide variety of skills and talents waiting to be unlocked and taken advantage of. For a speech-language pathologist, helping these little ones improve their communication and interpersonal skills is truly a fulfilling mission to undertake. Jordan Levin sits down with Nancy R. Kaufman, MA, CCC-SLP to share how a pianist like her was transformed into the owner and director of Kaufman Children's Center for Speech, Language, Sensory-Motor and Autism Treatment in West Bloomfield, Michigan. She talks about her wins and challenges in treating kids with autism as well as guiding their parents on the right way to take care of them. Nancy also discusses how she injects her experiences as a pianist into her current career by developing and providing music therapies.
A great way to make a quick observation of how your child is developing is... 1. Do a quick research of a timeline and understand the developmental milestones that your child should be meeting. At what age should my child be babbling sounds and trying to mimic words? Engaging in joint attention and be interested in playing with other children? Crawling? Playing with toys? Etc. 2. Immediately set up those peer dates with anyone and everyone that you can possibly expose your child to. Seeing your child in the same environment as their peers will help you to see what is typical and what is not. If you are in a place of thinking your child may need help but maybe you're afraid, confused, and unsure. I hear you. I may not have directly experienced what it's felt like to receive the news that my child has an autism diagnosis and that they won't develop like their neuro-typical peers, but what I do know is what can lie on the flip side of the timeline once your child begins receiving treatment. Every parent that I have worked with has experienced the same type of fear and uncertainty, but I have yet to have met a family that has EVER regretted their decision to get their child's autism diagnosis treated. ABA treatment: Why is it the most effective? We cover research proving the effectiveness of ABA treatment. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy treatment based on the science of learning and behavior. What we do as behavior analysts is take a look at an individual's specific behavior and determine if this is this a behavior that we need to increase or decrease? If a child is aggressive or engages in excessive tantrums, that's a behavior we want to decrease. Eye contact, functional language, social skills are all behaviors we want to increase in our children. This is where we begin to evaluate the environments that the child is in and determine what the child's main motivators are in order for us to create a controlled environment that will also us to most successfully teach a child various skill sets and decrease undesired behaviors. ABA has been proven in over 20 different research studies that intensive and long-term therapy using ABA principles improves outcomes for many children diagnosed with autism. The Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore Maryland is an internationally recognized institution dedicated to improving the lives of children and young adults with pediatric developmental disabilities through patient care, special education, research, and professional training. I'll be linking you to their website that discusses their stance on ABA treatment on our facebook page. But over the past 40 years, an extensive amount of research has documented the success of ABA-based treatment to reduce problem behavior and increase appropriate skills for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID), autism, and related disorders. Another study to note was published in September 2017. E Linstead, D R Dixon, E Hong, C O Burns, R French, M N Novack, and D Granpeesheh conducted a study to investigate how treatment intensity and duration impact learning across different treatment domains, including academic, adaptive, cognitive, executive function, language, motor, play, and social. The results indicated that treatment intensity and duration were both significant predictors of mastered learning objectives across all treatment domains . So why ABA? Why and how is it effective in treating autism. In ABA, we study the child's environments and determine how we can best increase and decrease behaviors. And this means everything and anything, and this can also include skills sets that involve speech and occupational therapy. It's not to say that one treatment trumps over the others, but it's to say that ABA can many times be the most effective in showing significant progress across areas that are more than just treating maladaptive behaviors. We focus on providing our children with foundational life skills,
Autism & Fecal Microbiota Transfer Therapy - MTT - FMT - UpdateJames B. Adams, Ph.D., is a President's Professor at Arizona State University, where he directs the autism/Asperger's research program, though he originally taught chemical and materials engineering there. Dr. Adams also holds a post at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. He is also the president of the Autism Society of Greater Phoenix, the co-chair of the Autism Research Institute's scientific advisory committee, and has received the Autism Service Award from the Greater Phoenix chapter of the Autism Society of America. In this episode, he reports on microbiota transfer therapy. This CBJ/301 is a republication of CBJ/214 and is selected because it reveals a most interesting development in Autism Treatment directly related to gut microbiota and his research with FMTT Fecal Microbiota Transfer Therapy. Sadowsky, Karen Schwarzberg Lipson, Matthew B. Sullivan, J. Gregory Caporaso and Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown BackgroundAutism spectrum disorders (ASD) are complex neurobiological disorders that impair social interactions and communication and lead to restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. The causes of these disorders remain poorly understood, but gut microbiota, the 1013 bacteria in the human intestines, have been implicated because children with ASD often suffer gastrointestinal (GI) problems that correlate with ASD severity. Several previous studies have reported abnormal gut bacteria in children with ASD. The gut microbiome-ASD connection has been tested in a mouse model of ASD, where the microbiome was mechanistically linked to abnormal metabolites and behavior. Similarly, a study of children with ASD found that oral non-absorbable antibiotic treatment improved GI and ASD symptoms, albeit temporarily. Here, a small open-label clinical trial evaluated the impact of Microbiota Transfer Therapy (MTT) on gut microbiota composition and GI and ASD symptoms of 18 ASD-diagnosed children. ResultsMTT involved a 2-week antibiotic treatment, a bowel cleanse, and then an extended fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) using a high initial dose followed by daily and lower maintenance doses for 7–8 weeks. The Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale revealed an approximately 80% reduction of GI symptoms at the end of treatment, including significant improvements in symptoms of constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, and abdominal pain. ConclusionsThis exploratory, extended-duration treatment protocol thus appears to be a promising approach to alter the gut microbiome and virome and improve GI and behavioral symptoms of ASD. Improvements in GI symptoms, ASD symptoms, and the microbiome all persisted for at least 8 weeks after treatment ended, suggesting a long-term impact. Similarly, clinical assessments showed that behavioral ASD symptoms improved significantly and remained improved 8 weeks after treatment ended. Bacterial and phagedeep sequencing analyses revealed successful partial engraftment of donor microbiota and beneficial changes in the gut environment. Specifically, overall bacterial diversity and the abundance of Bifidobacterium, Prevotella, and Desulfovibrio among other taxa...
