Segundo Alckmin, a aviação global enfrenta problemas que nenhum país consegue resolver sozinho, destacando o alto e volátil custo do combustível. Learn more about your ad choices. But what about the themed episodes? Glad you asked! First, we'll be talking all about relapse which includes discussions of resurgence and renewal (see, aren't you glad you're learning about this?). Then we're joined by Armando Bernal to discuss how PECS could be a key component of building up our support of assent practices. Finally we get real and talk about peer mediation. BOP in English: BST with María Sánchez In this episode, Miguel speaks with María Sánchez, a professional with a remarkable impact on the training of behavior analysts across Spain and Latin America. The conversation centers on Behavioral Skills Training (BST)—what it is, how it is applied in practice, and why it remains one of the most effective tools for training both professionals and families. María shares her professional journey, which began in England at a center for children with autism and later led her to her work with PECS, where she unexpectedly discovered her passion for supervision and professional training. She provided training to professionals in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Costa Rica, and Spain, witnessing firsthand the transformative power of augmentative communication, especially in nonverbal children who begin developing more complex language structures. During the pandemic—and after the initial shutdown in Italy—María reinvented her practice and created 360 Online, a remote training project designed to ensure that professionals in isolated regions could access high-quality RBT and IBT training. Since then, she has trained hundreds of students through synchronous classes, collaborations with centers across Latin America, and highly practical remote sessions. Miguel and María dive into the *BST procedure—instructions, modeling, role play, and feedback—*discussing how to implement it effectively with adults, how to provide specific feedback without overwhelming, and how to balance corrections with positive reinforcement. They also explore the advantages and challenges of remote training, the ethical importance of protecting client and family privacy, the need to foster safe and empowering learning environments, the role of telehealth in skill generalization, and the training demands faced in Spain and Latin America, where many practitioners have only one or two hours per week to complete the required 40 hours. Before wrapping up, María shares essential advice for those in the field of behavior analysis, emphasizing teamwork, deliberate practice, and professional humility.

Happy New Year!We are back from our regular break, in which we really did not do a lot for the podcast but were working on other things that you will discover throughout 2026. We are super excited about our plans, but it is not the time to talk about it … as we say in Germany, “lay the egg first, and then cackle.”However, for our first episode of Season 10 (who would have guessed that?), we have a very special guest and an exceptional co-host: Michael Hill and Caspar Jans. Both are very well known in our industry, and Caspar is still polishing his medals that he received from the PEX network ;-)Michael is a journalist and editor with experience in various mediums, including print, digital, video, webinars, and podcasts. He is passionate about the editorial and publishing processes and enjoys working creatively to produce media that has the biggest possible impact on the audience. And he is also the editor of the Process Excellence Network, an outlet that many of us know :-)In this episode of the podcast, we talk about:Michael explains PEX Network's role as a content and community platform for process excellence, transformation, automation, and AI leaders. His journey into journalism started with a love for storytelling, creative writing at university, and a less-glamorous detour into insurance. Eight years covering cybersecurity journalism shaped Michael's editorial approach before he transitioned into the process excellence space.PEX Network is positioned as more than a publication: it blends daily news, thought leadership, reports, webinars, and virtual events. The discussion highlights PEX' push to become a trusted news source for the process and transformation community.Michael walks through a “day in the life” of an editor—balancing breaking news, long-form reports, contributor management, and vendor collaboration. The group explores how AI is reshaping content consumption search behavior and what “quality content” means in a zero-click world.A candid look at different content formats shows why virtual All Access events drive the strongest engagement across the community. The PEX Leaders Lists are unpacked as a mix of community recognition, inspiration, and organic reach, not paid promotion.Sponsored content and vendor partnerships are discussed openly, emphasizing editorial integrity, trust, and mutual value.Looking ahead, Michael outlines PECS' future focus: video-first formats, broader transformation topics, and the “Future of BPM,” starting with the February All Access event. You can reach Michael via LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-hill-1a17b08b/. This episode is back as a replay because the conversation is still incredibly relevant—and the questions around PECS and AAC haven't gone away. In this episode, we take a thoughtful, nuanced look at the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and its role in supporting autistic communication. While PECS has been widely used for decades, growing research, lived experience, and neurodiversity-affirming practice are prompting professionals to ask deeper questions about autonomy, flexibility, and what true communication really looks like. I'm joined by speech-language pathologists Paulina Elias and Dr. Amanda Blackwell from Natural Communication for a powerful discussion about how PECS originated, what it does well, and where it can fall short—especially when communication is limited to requesting or tightly controlled exchanges. We explore why many clinicians are shifting toward multimodal, child-led AAC approaches that support regulation, self-expression, and authentic connection. You'll hear us unpack topics like honoring a child's right to say "no," moving away from hand-over-hand prompting, and choosing communication tools that grow alongside a child rather than restricting them. Whether you're a parent, educator, or therapist, this replay episode offers updated perspectives that may challenge old assumptions—and help you feel more confident in supporting communication that is respectful, functional, and truly empowering.

Parents often worry that if they introduce signs, PECS, or an AAC device, their child will “never talk.” In this episode I share Julianna's story—how she lost language, how we taught functional communication with signs, and why that actually accelerated her spoken words. I unpack what changed for her brain, her motivation, and our relationship, and I cite research showing AAC does not block speech and can increase it.Key TakeawaysAAC (signs, PECS, devices) gives a child a reliable voice now, reducing frustration and building the language foundation that supports speech later.High-quality studies show AAC does not delay speech. Hi friends, welcome back to the Autism Little Learners Podcast. I'm Tara, a speech-language pathologist who has spent over 25 years working with young autistic children and their families. Today, we're going to talk about a topic that brings up a lot of feelings for educators, therapists, and parents: the Picture Exchange Communication System, or PECS. Specifically, why PECS isn't enough for preschoolers. Now, before I dive in, I want to be clear—PECS is not evil. It's not “bad.” For many kids, it has opened the door to communication, and that's something to celebrate. But PECS, on its own, isn't enough. Our preschoolers need more than compliance-based exchanges to build rich, lifelong communication. Takeaways PECS was created in the 1990s to teach kids to request items using pictures. Traditional PECS training often emphasized compliance over authentic communication. Rigid use of PECS protocols sometimes caused frustration and meltdowns in children. PECS has major limitations, including prompt dependency and a narrow focus on requests. Research shows PECS helps with requesting, but not broader communication or social connection. Evidence-based practice must balance research, clinical experience, and client perspectives. Autistic adults report that PECS can restrict autonomy, dignity, and language development. PECS can be a stepping stone, but should not be the final communication system. Robust AAC systems provide greater vocabulary, flexibility, and authentic language use. Communication should always prioritize connection, not compliance. In this powerful reflection episode, Tara shares one of the most impactful moments of her career—her conversation with Jordyn Zimmerman during the 2025 Preschool Autism Summit. Together, they unpack the importance of presuming competence, providing early AAC access, and creating neurodiversity-affirming learning spaces. Tara also shares emotional ripple stories from participants, illustrating how nearly 50,000 educators and therapists are creating waves of change for autistic children around the world. Key Takeaways: Presume competence—always. Speech is not the same as intelligence, and we must stop making assumptions based on verbal ability. Non-speaking ≠ non-verbal. The term “non-verbal” implies a lack of language; “non-speaking” affirms that language exists, even without speech. There are no prerequisites for AAC. Children do not need to match, point, or “behave” a certain way before receiving access to communication tools. PECS is not a communication system. It is a requesting system and does not provide full language access. AAC must include access to robust, literacy-based tools. Limiting a child to a core board or basic images restricts their ability to truly communicate. Talking about students in front of them causes real harm. Many non-speaking students hear and understand far more than people assume. Lack of access to communication is traumatic. It can lead to emotional and physical distress—and we have a responsibility to prevent that. Real inclusion means access, not separation. Segregated classrooms limit growth and potential; all students deserve meaningful academic instruction. Educators are making real-time ripples. From texting SLPs during the summit to creating team trainings, attendees are already pushing change. Small shifts create big waves. With over 49,000 participants, the summit's ripple effect may reach nearly half a million autistic children—and it all starts with choosing compassion over compliance. In this installment of minisodes, we tackle a common AAC challenge: what happens when professionals don't agree? The BCBA recommends PECS, the SLP suggests a dynamic device… Now what? Welcome to the standard trial of non-collaborative chaos. There are plenty of barriers to AAC collaboration, but also practical steps that can lead to smoother teamwork. The first is building familiarity. AAC can feel overwhelming, but taking time to learn the basics makes collaboration more effective. One key reminder: the device belongs to the student. Everyone on the team should be working toward the same goal—supporting the individual's communication needs across their lifespan.Joint assessment can help, and tools like the free ALP AAC assessment offer a shared starting point. Another useful strategy is to assign a single person to program the device. This reduces confusion and ensures consistency. Most importantly, collaboration keeps families from being caught in the middle. When professionals work together, outcomes improve—for everyone involved.#autism #speechtherapy What's Inside:10-minute summer series.Free Assessment.Collaborating every step from assessment through intervention.Mentioned In This Episode:ALP AAC Assessment AAC course bundle Speech Membership - ABA Speech ABA Speech: Home

Is PECS out as an AAC tool for autistic kids? Today, we're diving into a hot topic in the world of autism and communication: the Picture Exchange Communication System, or PECS. Over the years, PECS has been widely used as a way for autistic children to communicate, but as new research and insights have emerged, there's been a lot of conversation—some of it controversial—around its effectiveness and limitations. In this episode, I'm thrilled to be joined by two speech-language pathologists, Paulina Elias, and Amanda Blackwell, from Natural Communication, who share their invaluable expertise on PECS and the bigger picture of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) for autistic children. We explore how PECS started, what it offers, and why more and more professionals are moving toward more flexible, child-led communication methods that honor autonomy and individuality. You'll hear us discuss everything from the importance of giving kids the freedom to say ‘no' to strategies that empower communication beyond requests. Plus, we talk about the pitfalls of hand-over-hand prompting and the emerging preference for tools that grow with a child's communication needs. If you're an educator, parent, or anyone working with autistic children, this episode will give you new perspectives on PECS, AAC, and the role of true connection in supporting autistic communication. Get ready for a thought-provoking discussion that might change the way you think about communication support! Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Tu4rKeAM0dc Bios: Paulina Elias, M.Cl.Sc., SLP Reg. CASLPO Paulina is a multilingual speech language pathologist (SLP) living in Canada. Although she works with people of different ages and communicative needs, she has a special interest in the areas of multilingualism, gestalt language development, and autism. Paulina enjoys collaborating directly with families and interdisciplinary teams in each person's native language. At this time, Paulina offers international consults virtually, and evaluation and intervention services in Ontario, Canada. She regularly presents internationally on the topics of multilingualism, gestalt language development, and AAC. Dr. Amanda Blackwell, EdD, SLPD, CCC-SLP Dr. Amanda is passionate about communication in all forms. She has had the opportunity to learn from a variety of people from diverse cultural backgrounds as she has lived and worked full time as a bilingual (English/Spanish) SLP in Guatemala since 2013. Dr. Blackwell teaches postgraduate courses in autism and AAC at Minot State University and Saint Mary's College, and mentors SLPD students in their capstone research projects through the MGH Institute of Health Professions and Rocky Mountain University. She loves to travel around the world (with recent trips to Spain, Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Honduras, and Sri Lanka) to collaborate with professionals in presentations, workshops, research, and autism identification (ADOS-2). Topics Covered: Podcast features Paulina and Amanda from Natural Communication discussing updates in PECS and AAC. Paulina is a multilingual speech-language pathologist from Guatemala; Amanda is a U.S. speech-language pathologist with 11 years in Guatemala, focusing on autism and AAC. Both advocate for accessible information in multiple languages, especially Spanish, and are expanding to French and Portuguese. PECS, created in 1985, is a structured communication system based on ABA principles, mainly for requests. Criticism of PECS includes its rigidity and lack of fostering true communication skills beyond requests. Hand-over-hand prompting is discouraged due to autonomy concerns; hand-under-hand is recommended for better control. Communication books should enable autonomous communication, including the ability to protest or reject. Building relationships and trust with clients is essential for effective communication and learning. The podcast calls for a shift from traditional methods like PECS to more flexible, multimodal communication strategies. Natural Communication provides resources in English and Spanish, including a crash course on Gestalt language development, and engages in research and workshops to enhance AAC practices. Today's very special guest is Andy Bondy, together with his wife Lori Frost, pioneered the development of the Picture Exchange Communication System. In today's show, he talks about PECS today and the importance of meeting the communication needs of all individuals. Fittingly, today's jargon is PECS.
This week, we present a Recast of a previous “roundtable discussion” between Rachel, Chris, and previous host Lucas Stuber on early intervention and AAC! (Note: Recast episodes are episodes from the early days of TWT that Chris and Rachel want to highlight again). In this episode, Rachel shares her experiences with using AAC with very young children and discusses the benefits and challenges with early AAC implementation. They explore the misconception that AAC might hinder verbal development, as well as parental concerns regarding AAC as “screen time”, the importance of multimodal communication options, and more! Before the episode, Rachel shares that she no longer agrees with a position she shared on the podcast. In the roundtable, she shares that PECS can be a good option for learning initiation skills with AAC. Rachel no longer believes PECS is a good option for teaching language initiation to emergent communicators. Rachel clarifies that high-tech devices offer more robust and flexible communication options, which are usually more effective in supporting language development. She no longer suggests delaying the introduction of high-tech AAC if at all possible. Key Ideas this Episode:

Fan-favorite Dr. Andy Bondy joins me again to talk about... you guessed it... AAC! In this episode, we discuss a paper he published last year in the journal, Advances in Neurodevelopmental Disorders, that is titled, "Issues Related to AAC and SGD Use by Adolescents and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder." We get into why he felt this paper was necessary to write, how he chose to communicate his thoughts to an audience beyond those of us in behavior analysis, why he likes the term, "under what conditions" so much, what does and does not constitute a "robust" communication repertoire, the role of teaching words like "please" and Andy's nuanced view of this practice, whether the sound from Speech Generation Devices matter, and lots more. We also got into a really interesting discussion on the distinction between pointing to pictures vs. exchanging them with communicative partners, and how that difference impacts Joint Attention. We closed the show by talking about two topics that have been receiving lots of discussion as of late: Spelling to Communicate and Gestalt Language Processing. Lastly, ended the show by taking a question from a Patreon member about Andy's thoughts regarding the use of activity schedules, and whether they qualify as prompts, or something else.
