Glossy reporters Lexy Lebsack, Sara Spruch-Feiner and Emma Sandler welcomed dozens of guests onto the Glossy Beauty Podcast in 2024. This included top executives at L'Oréal Group and Kendo Brands; longtime industry leaders from Retrouvé and Versed; and breakout indie brand founders from Flamingo Estate and Fazit. But it was the six interviews highlighted below that best capture the ways in which the beauty industry changed in 2024. In today's special end-of-year podcast episode, Lebsack and Spruch-Feiner walk through six can't-miss clips. In the clips ahead, Estée Lauder VP Chloe Green-Vamos discusses how the conglomerate is utilizing AI to better the business while longtime beauty exec Sarah Creal muses about reaching women over 40 with her new namesake line — two massive trends that swept the industry this year. This special 2024 episode also highlights an important change in retail's role in business, as heard in a clip from Black Girl Sunscreen founder Shontay Lundy's September episode. Speaking of sunscreen, Beauty of Joseon founder Sumin Lee joined the pod this month to discuss entering the U.S. market with the TikTok-famous brand. In another clip, Beachwaver's Sarah Potempa shares the secret behind her knockdown success live-selling business on TikTok. And finally, in Glossy's Tweens Talk Beauty episode, three Gen Alpha tween shoppers discuss the role beauty plays in their lives. The Glossy Beauty Podcast will be back next week with another special episode looking ahead at 2025 and will return on January 9 with our regular episodes.

Sarah Potempa, celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of The Beachwaver, is a live-selling expert. It all started in 2012 when she launched her first product, the original Beachwaver rotating curling iron, live on QVC. “It was wild because they said, ‘Don't get too excited — you might get four or five shows in your first year.' … And then I was on QVC over 50 times my first year,” she told Glossy. She thrived in the medium and was able to reach a growing number of consumers looking for an easier way to create beachy waves at home. She sold out frequently, became a viewer favorite and was asked to return time after time. Unlike traditional curling irons and waving wands, The Beachwaver allows the user to clamp the end of a section of hair in place before pressing a button to wrap the section of hair around the electric iron. This avoids an unintended arm workout and the likelihood of burnt fingers, both common with the then-popular waving wands. Although she was already a well-known celebrity hairstylist and a regular in beauty publications for her styling advice, Potempa's ability to connect with viewers while live-selling forever shifted the trajectory of her career. Potempa has since launched more than 100 SKUs — including a variety of hot tools, hair care and accessories — and has sold more than 2 million Beachwaver irons, which retail for $99 and up. Her line is available at Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Target, Anthropologie and Dillards, among other retailers. Today, she uses the skills she learned on QVC to be a leader in social media-based live-selling, often going live for hours at a time on TikTok, Amazon, Beachwaver's own DTC site and anywhere else experimenting with the medium. This has translated to massive success on TikTok: As of October of 2024, she's sold more than 1.1 million units on TikTokShop, making her one of the most prolific sellers on the platform. Beachwaver is an independently held family business co-founded with Potepa's two sisters, Erin and Emily, and her extended family regularly appears in the company's many TikTok content franchises, which she calls “shows”. Her team and family stream from Beachwaver's Illinois warehouse and offices, and this month she opened a second office and content studio in New York City. Potempa joins the Glossy Beauty Podcast to discuss the nuances of live-selling and the benefits of an in-house content studio.
“I really wanted to give people a story and a journey they could understand, and simplify hair care, because throughout my career I've found it can be confusing for a lot of people,” shares Sarah Potempa, founder and CEO of The Beachwaver Co. Sarah joins Lindsay Pinchuk this week to share her path from celebrity hairstylist—working with clients like Rachel Zoe—to creating the Beachwaver, a rotating curling iron designed to make hairstyling at home easier. One turning point came at QVC, where, with just a prototype in hand, she pitched her product and secured a major order that propelled her brand forward.Sarah opens up about the valuable lessons she's learned on flexibility, authenticity, and building a strong community—particularly during the pandemic when she pivoted to direct-to-consumer sales and used TikTok to connect with her audience. How do you scale a business to meet growing demand while keeping that personal touch? Sarah tackled this by focusing on customer relationships and maintaining top-notch quality in her products. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance, creativity, and staying true to your vision as an entrepreneur.Quotes“I really wanted to give people a story and a journey that they could understand and simplify hair care, because what I've found throughout my career is that it can be a little confusing to a lot of people.” (23:48 | Sarah Potempa) “I would do the website live and the TikTok live at the same time until I realized these are different audiences, and they need different experiences.” (34:05 | Sarah Potempa)“You also have to educate yourself and learn… It took me a really, really long time to get to where we are on TikTok because I wanted to be perfect, and I wanted to feel like we were this big, huge brand when we weren't… I just learned that, ‘You know what, I have to deal with it.' I have to learn every element of this business. I have to know who's replying and how to the customers.” (47:26 | Sarah Potempa) “While you're live streaming, show the real you. And that's okay because that's something I struggled with. Don't be afraid to be yourself and show that.” (53:59 | Sarah Potempa)“Enjoy the moment and appreciate the struggles, the hard times.” (56:19 | Sarah Potempa)Connect with Sarah Potempa:https://www.instagram.com/sarahpotempa/https://www.tiktok.com/@thebeachwaverRegister for Marketing Made Simple for Small Business: https://www.lindsaypinchuk.com/mmsfall2024Subscribe to the Dear FoundHer... newsletter: https://lindsaypinchuk.myflodesk.com/foundherfridaysDon't forget to follow Lindsay on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lindsaypinchukPodcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm Hosted on Acast. “It felt like eight, nine years we were like, ‘Did anybody ever see our videos? Does anyone ever comment on our stuff? Like, what is going on? Why? We work so hard, we edit new stuff every day!' Until we started to commit to the audience and give them more of our attention and our time and listen to them, is when it really shifted.” -Sarah Potempa In this episode of Entreprenista, we talked to Sarah Potempa and Erin Potempa-Wall, sisters who, along with their sister Emily, co-founded Beachwaver, a hair care company specializing in innovative styling tools. Celebrity hairstylist Sarah was known for styling stars like Reese Witherspoon and Camila Cabello when she invented the original Beachwaver, a revolutionary rotating curling iron. Recognizing the potential of this innovative product, Erin left her role in corporate law to focus on research and development, playing a crucial role in bringing the invention to market. Together, the sisters have built a woman owned, self funded company that emphasizes empowerment, innovation and sustainability. Today, the beach waiver has grown into a global brand inspiring confidence and beauty in women worldwide through its award winning products and strong community engagement. Tune in and hear our conversation with Sarah and Erin, recorded live last month at our Entreprenista Founders Weekend event in Orlando. Sarah and Erin tell us about the evolution of the Beachwaver, how they use analytics and data to understand and build their audience, and the importance of pivoting and evolving as a self-funded, women-owned brand. We talked about: Launching the Beachwaver on QVC (03:45) Using live social media platforms to educate and market to consumers (04:41) Dividing and conquering as co-founders (09:33) Forecasting production for a new launch (17:50) Tailoring social content to individual platforms (23:31) The inspiration behind Beachwaver's many collaborations (24:54) Connect with Sarah & Erin: Beachwaver Website - Use code: FAVE50 for 50% off until 6/30/24! It’s inspiring wisdom from successful celebrity stylist Sarah Potempa, who created the incredible smash hit The Beachwaver---a patented, dual Voltage Rotating Curling Iron along with a line of styling products. She took an idea from inspiration to action within a single week, and built the self-funded, female-founded company to nearly 50 people! Sarah combined what she learned from traveling the world — working with the biggest celebrities like Barack Obama, Kendall Jenner, and Cyndi Lauper — with the knowledge that anything is possible if you keep fighting and trying. Sarah joins Socialfly Co-Founders Stephanie Cartin and Courtney Spritzer for a conversation about her career, and describes her journey to success, including how you can always find a solution when you’re with family; the need to simply communicate together through challenges; the moment she felt like a Kardashian; reaching the point when she could start saying “no”; an incredible moment she saw her daughter live a dream; and, the amazing moments when Sarah witnesses the impact her product line makes. Plus, a surprise!
There's a level of trust necessary for committing to a hair stylist. Not only does the stylist have to know his or her stuff, but you have to feel comfortable enough around him or her for both long, awkward silences and heart-to-heart conversations you never thought you'd have while wearing a full-body cape around your neck. And sure, "hair grows out," eventually, but try telling that to my twelve-year-old self after that one time the stylist cut my bangs distressingly short—if I'd felt an instant connection with my stylist and felt comfortable putting the kibosh on those bangs, maybe I wouldn't have had to wear a baseball cap for the entire summer. That familiarity is hard to achieve in person, and even harder to simulate over a podcast phone line—but as soon as I dialed in with Sarah Potempa, Erin Potempa-Wall, and Emily Potempa, I felt like I was in the friendliest, most uplifting salon of my life, with three hair fairy godmothers constantly affirming how awesome we all were. (And this was after 20+ minutes of technical malfunctions, which is enough to make even the kindest of podcast guests a little prickly—not so for the Potempa sisters, who were gracious and flexible throughout). After years talking to beauty editors about the struggles of educating regular people about achieving those always-popular beachy waves, Sarah took it upon herself to invent the Beachwaver, a rotating curling iron that makes it easy for even the least coordinated among us to look effortlessly put together. She partnered with her sister Erin, who left her gig as a corporate lawyer to help navigate the business world and all the patents, trademarks, and more of the less glamorous parts of entrepreneurship. They were later joined by Emily, who was the first person to ever try the Beachwaver and whose production experience on shows like Top Chef helped immensely with the Beachwaver's initial launch on QVC. And in keeping with our current focus on building a better Earth, one of their big goals right now is "building up our platform so we can use it for good," explains Erin, who's the go-to sister for sustainability and environmental initiatives within The Beachwaver Co. "As a company, we're taking a very serious look at our supply chain," Erin continues. "We view it as we have this opportunity to bring out great product, but we also have a responsibility to do so in an environmentally sustainable manner," which is showcased in their brand-new wet line, the Make Waves collection. Their commitment to creating a better world isn't limited to the physical environment; Beachwaver also made a splash (pun totally intended) when they sponsored the World Surf League's Maui Beachwaver Pro competition. Last fall, the World Surf League announced that starting in the 2019 season, they’re awarding equal prize money in men’s and women’s competitions, making it the first (and only) US-based global sports to do so. "As a brand, we are female-founded and self-funded, and we're a company that wants to partner with like-minded groups," Sarah explained. "It was a really cool opportunity for us, and we were so motivated by these women, and they do deserve the equal pay!" "When we're looking at who we partner with, we want to make sure it's in line with our brand mission statement," Erin adds on. "A part of our mission statement is empowerment. Empowerment for us is really at the core of who we are as a women-owned company. We're out there every day fighting the good fight, if you will, and it's these little steps coupled with these larger partnerships that we hope someday is really truly going to make a difference." But as motivating as it was to hear about their commitment to equal pay and then environment, my favorite part of the interview came at the very end, when I asked each sister to tell me about a specific strength held by each of her other sisters. I'm not going to lie, it got a little dusty in the recording room as I listened to Erin gush about Sarah's ability to make anyone from a supermodel to a mom getting a makeover feel beautiful, or while I heard Sarah compliment Emily on her ability to become friends with anybody in any part of the world. The sisters agreed. "Everyone listening should go do this! Call your sister, call your mom," said Sarah. "It's a tough world out there!" added Erin. "It's nice to hear those things once in awhile." So take this as an official action item, listeners: listen to this podcast, and then take a second to call, text, or email a woman you love and tell them something specific you think they're awesome at. You'll make their day. And it would make OUR day if you rated or reviewed us on iTunes and Spotify. Thanks for listening and being a part of our community.

My guest for The Happy Hour # 186 is Carrie Rozema. Carrie is co-author of 'The Least of These', a personal testimony of the redemptive power of Christ in the face of her husband's heroin addiction. Carrie and her husband Neal share their personal testimonies in hopes of bringing insight and freedom to those held captive by drug abuse and incarceration. In today's episode, Carrie says "God is in the business of redeeming broken people", and throughout our conversation today, I know you'll hear so many examples of how God will pursue us no matter what the circumstances. Carrie begins by sharing how God rescued her from an unsafe marriage, and how she came to know God through His Word. As Carrie was healing and growing more in her faith, in walks Neal - the exact opposite "type" of man Carrie thought God would pick for her. You guys, she even told him on the first date that she wasn't the girl he was looking for. Carries describes how a few months into the relationship, he admitted he was on parole. She tells us how she finally learned the truth about his heroin addiction when he was sent to prison. She first told Neal to lose her number, but instead throughout Neal's years in prison, God continually pursued both of them, and they ended up married just ten days after Neal was released. At the end of our conversation, Carrie gives a convicting challenge to the church: she encourages us to step out and welcome people who come from hard situations such as abuse, addiction, or prison. I loved how she said even if it seems messy or hard, we should "roll out the red carpet". {You can listen to the show HERE. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends.
