In this episode, I'm chatting with Dr. Tim Jarvis, director of Fullers Bookshop, about taking over the 103-year-old bookshop, local authors, what to see around Hobart, and books!Fullers Bookshop was established in 1920, by W. E. (Bill) Fuller, in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. In 1961 the shop was taken over by Cedric and Ian Pearce, famous not only as booksellers but also as jazz musicians. In 1980, when Cedric became ill, the shop was purchased by Ian Drinkwater. Ian moved Fullers to Murray St in 1981.Clive Tilsley bought Fullers in 1982 and 1992 and moved the bookshop back to Collins Street. In 1996 the Afterword Café was established on the mezzanine level of the shop – this moved Fullers onto another level of business. In 2001, Fullers opened a second shop in Launceston in the north of the state, where Clive spent 13 years establishing the brand in a very competitive book-buying market. In 2009 the Hobart shop moved again – up the road to a bright new space (with a fabulous view of the mountain). In 2014, Fullers sold its Launceston shop, and at the same time, Clive moved back to Hobart. In the 30 years under Clive's guidance, Fullers has confirmed its status as a leading bookseller in Tasmania and a fundamental component of the cultural landscape of the state. In 2021 Tim Jarvis took over ownership, steering the bookshop through the pandemic, and continuing the tradition of Fullers Bookshop being a hub of the community, offering a wide range of author events, readings, books clubs, and publishing. Fullers BookshopFullers Bookshop Book ClubRichard FlanaganJames DryburghPrue BattenBob Brown FoundationPete HayLucinda Wine BarDier Makr RestaurantThe Little Lotus Vegan and Vegetarian RestaurantMONASunbear CoffeeThe Internet Is Not What You Think It Is, Justin E. En este episodio de Rock is here vamos a visitar un escenario con más de 70 años de historia: el Electric Ballroom de Camden Town. I welcome 'Beyond Explanation' creators Marc & Bill Fuller to Arcane Radio. https://www.youtube.com/c/BeyondExplanation - Marc Fuller is a Sedona, Arizona based website developer with over 25 years’ experience. A Colorado native and having an almost lifelong interest in the unexplained, his awareness began at age 10 listening to newspaper reporter and radio talk show host Bill Barker recount the search for Bridey Murphy. He continued this exploring all types of arcane information from the explorations of Terence McKenna, the science fiction of Philip K. Dick and others, to a deep appreciation of Art Bell’s Dreamland, Coast to Coast and Art's spectrum of guests and topics. All this led Marc, many years ago, to recognizing Lon Strickler’s long term, indefatigable, and virtually daily work, in researching, collaborating and sharing unexplained phenomena and observations. Bill Fuller is a Colorado native graphic artist, tech guy, and horse professional. Bill grew up listening to talk radio with his father, Marc. Some of Bill’s long-remembered favorites include Dr. Demento, Thomas Mischke, Dr. Dean Edell, and of course Art Bell. A voracious reader of classic Sci-Fi like Asimov, Bradbury, and Heinlein, young Bill also developed a keen interest in space, the future, and the fantastic. Today, Bill tries to balance his leisure time reading and enjoying the outdoors with his day job caring for horses, both for his clients and for local rescue groups and agencies. In cooperation with Lon, Marc and Bill seek to expand awareness of Lon’s work. The benefit of this will, they hope, help society realize there is a greater depth to life than most in authority will admit and help raise us to disclosure and understanding of what now seems unexplained. Can technology save small-scale agriculture? Big Burrito Restaurant Group corporate chef Bill Fuller and Rivendale Farms general manager Christine Grady join hosts Debbie and Billy Shore from their hometown of Pittsburgh to talk about food and the future of sustainable agriculture. Grady describes robotic milking systems that allow for 15% more milk from less-stressed cows. “If the cows are getting anxious, that affects the yield and the quality of the milk,” she says. Fuller was on the cutting edge of the sustainable food movement in Pittsburgh twenty years ago. “It was great to watch this transition and transformation and ride along with it. It was really sort of beautiful,” he says. “So many aspects of our community start to unravel and fray as a result of the disappearance of small farms,” observes Billy Shore. Fuller asks Grady, “Farmers in general are really conservative and slow to change. What are your thoughts on getting farmers to adopt the new technology?” Grady responds that the key may be young farmers. “One of the things that’s incredibly important is to attract the younger generation into farming… You actually need to attract a new workforce that is more interested in looking how to innovate,” she explains. Listen to this important conversation about the confluence of technology, innovation and sustainability.

Coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring is a non-invasive way to visualize calcified atherosclerotic plaque in the coronary arteries. But, so what? Physicians have struggled with what to do with this information and how we might incorporate CAC scores into clinical practice. The BioImage study may provide some insight with a prospective cohort study designed to see whether CAC scores predict incident ASCVD in patients at high risk according to the ACC/AHA pooled cohort equation. Cardiologist Dr. Josh Levenson of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center takes us through what the evidence means to him and what this trial does to impact ASCVD prevention practices. In this episode with Chef Bill Fuller, we discuss: how Chef Fuller got his start in the industry, where the culture of being "hard" in the restaurant industry comes from, correcting the behavior, not the person, as sous, how to handle an executive chef that is less qualified than you,  being mindful of your mood and how you influence those around you,  the impact of promoting from within, transitioning from working on the business to in the business, hiring people who are better than you at things,  the value of annually self-reviews, and the result of limiting hours worked to 40-45 hrs for line staff and 5-55 hrs for management.  Hitchhiking his way from his hometown of Dubois at 18 to venture the country, Bill settled in D.C. as a line cook while studying for his B.S. in Chemistry at GMU. He abandoned his scientific pursuits, trading his lab coat for a chef's jacket. Bill eventually made his way back to Pittsburgh and into the kitchens of Big Burrito Restaurants, and has served as the Corporate Chef since 1997. Today Chef Fuller has garnered the additional title of partner of the Big Burrito Restaurant Group and oversees a total of 19 locations.
