Last week, we recorded the last episode of On Taking Pictures. If you're a longtime listener, you may think you've heard this before, and you're right, you have. But this time it's different. I'll get to why in a minute, but first I need to back up. In 2008, I was teaching Photoshop at Tri-Community Photo in Covina, California. One of the other instructors and I started doing photo walks with some of the students on the weekends. As they got more popular, we put up a simple web page called Faded & Blurred that had details about the upcoming walks. It pretty quickly evolved into a full-blown site, complete with a blog, spotlights on some of our favorite photographers, and a podcast called Q&A@F&B, which was a series of long-form conversations with photographers who were willing to sit down with me for an hour and talk about their work. In addition to getting to talk with photographers like John Keatley, David duChemin, and Ibarionex Perello, I also spoke with Bill Wadman for the first time. Bill and I hit it off straight away, and in 2012, when he was thinking about doing a weekly photography podcast, he started auditioning potential co-hosts. He reached out to me and asked if I'd be interested. I said sure, and my audition ended up being the first episode of OTP. For the next 6 years and 325 episodes, my Tuesday mornings were spent recording the show, with me in Rancho Cucamonga, California—at least to start—and Bill in Brooklyn, New York.If you enjoyed this Iteration, I would love it if you would share it with a friend or two. And if it resonated with you on some level, I'd love to know why. Photographer Clay Williams is well known in culinary circles. He's spent much of the last decade photographing food and the people who make it in NYC and around the world. We discuss how he got his start photographing food carts and restaurants for websites, why he's back into the world of film photography for the joy of it, and how the group Black Food Folks he co-founded connects people within the New York food world.
In this episode, Brain & Life Podcast co-host Dr. Katy Peters interviews Bill Wadman, a photographer who has been living and working with migraines since he was a teenager. He discusses his medication journey, ways he relieves the pain in his daily life, and what he has learned about himself by working through migraines. Then, Dr. Peters discusses the science behind migraines with Bill's personal headache specialist, Dr. Susan Broner. Dr. Broner is Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology at Weill Cornell Medical College and Medical Director of the Weill Cornell Medicine Headache Program. She explains risk factors, unique symptoms, and how to begin the migraine treatment journey. Today we're in Matt Carr's kitchen discussing his beginnings in photojournalism in the midwest, how photography took him to Alaska and Prague and London, and what happens in the photo press rooms at Sundance.
Noah Prince has worked as a gaffer, best boy, and electrician in the TV and film industry for more than a quarter century. We discuss lighting for movies, growing up in Cambridge, making career decisions when your first dream doesn't lead where you thought it would. Noah also has some great anecdotes from his years on set.
We start with Bill going back to his roots in audio, first as a equipment repairman and then in due course a mix engineer. Which leads he and Jeffery into a discussion about getting turned around and losing your bearings. How do you know which direction to go? What if you've achieved your original goals and need to find new ones? Ben Brush is interested in just about everything, just like me, except that he's got the bona fides to back it up. Having worked in research labs on brain machine interfaces and then spent the last 10 years between Harvard Medical School, Mass General Brigham, and NYU hospitals becoming a board-certified Neurologist. Oh and he's also hiked all 2184 miles of the Appalachian Trail solo in 135 days. I have so many questions.
Last week, I sat down for a conversation with Bill Wadman that was released in this feed as well as the On Taking Pictures feed, which hadn't been updated since 2018. The response to the episode was, well, unexpected to say the least. We've gotten a ton of feedback and I can't tell you how much we appreciate it. We don't really know how often these conversations will happen moving forward, but it's always good to sit down will Bill and just hit the record button and see where we end up.What I do know is that this is part two of the conversation from last week that started with Bill talking about whether or not he was going to return his new Fuji GFX 100. In this conversation we're talking about media, materials, and an incident involving some Ikea shelving that leads us down a rabbit hole around legacy and perspective.LINKSOTP Episode ArchiveIkea IDÅSEN shelvingCONNECT WITH BILLWebsite: https://billwadman.comTwitter: @billwadmanInstagram: @billwadmanCONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com Twitter: @jefferysaddoris Instagram: @jefferysaddorisYouTube: @jefferysaddorisSUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Almost Everything in your favorite podcast app to get conversations like this, along with Process Driven, Deep Natter, and Iterations all in one feed.SUPPORTLeave a review or a rating wherever you listen or share the episode on social media.MUSICEyes This Way by Bill Wadman (w/ Andrea Mann)

In 2012, Bill Wadman and I recorded the first episode of On Taking Pictures and for the next 324 weeks, we never missed an episode. Even though Bill and I don't talk every week like we used to, whenever we do, it's like picking up the conversation where we left off. If you've never listened to an episode of OTP, consider this a teaser for the 325 episodes you have ahead of you. OTP changed my life for the better and I always love getting to sit down with Bill, regardless of whether or not we hit the record button. But it's often a lot more fun when we do because we get to share the conversations with you. If you were an On Taking Pictures listener, you probably knowhow my conversations with Bill Wadman go. If this is your first one, you're in for a treat. As is often the case when we talk, the conversation follows more than a few rabbit holes, from how podcasting has changed since we started OTP in 2012, to watching the Beatles demystifying creativity, to how it feels to see home movies of our parents who were taken from us way too soon, and a bunch more. It's another terrific conversation and I hope you enjoy it. Back for his second episode. Slate magazine's resident rock critic & chart analyst Chris Molanphy chats with me about the definition of a "Smash", why the demographics of the artists on the charts have changed over time, and how much he hates most Diane Warren penned songs. Always great to talk to Chris.
One of the things I love about talking to Bill Wadman is that even when we don't talk for a while, the banterand chemistry that was the heart of On Taking Pictures for more than 300 episodes is right there regardless of what we're talking about. It's been that way since the first episode and nearly a decade later, it's still fun to see where we end up. The other day I was on the phone with Bill Wadman and it didn't take long before Bill asked “wait, should we be rolling tape on this?” When you've recorded 1000 or so hours with someone, the answer is usually yes. I just wish we had been rolling from the beginning, because when Bill called, he asked what I was doing and I said that I was listening to Steve Perry. Without missing a beat, Bill launched into the opening bars of Oh Sherrie and we both started cracking up. Here's the rest of the conversation. Like many of you, I could not be happier to finally be rid of the raging dumpster fire that was 2020. I know the next year will be anything but easy, but I am cautiously optimistic that 2021 will be filled with new possibilities and chances to do things a little differently than last year.I started doing yoga about a month ago and Adrianne reminded me that there's a concept in yoga about setting an intention at the beginning of a practice and while I'm not a fan of resolutions per se, I wanted to share a few things today that I've been thinking about for a while as a way of setting my intentions for the year ahead. To that end, I want to let you know about some of the changes that I'm making both personally and professionally moving forward.Let's start with my shows. Early in 2020 I created a new feed called “Jeffery Saddoris: Everything” as a way for you to get everything I release, including Process Driven, In Between, Iterations, and any sort of one-off conversation, like the recent chat with Bill Wadman, all in one place. The response to that feed has been terrific – in fact subscriptions to the individual feeds have dropped off considerably as subscriptions to Everything have increased. It's not one to one, but it's enough that I'm going to deprecate the individual show feeds so that moving forward, I will only be publishing new episodes to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything. If you're already subscribed to Everything, great. You will continue to get all of the episodes that I release, which should be not only easier to manage under just one feed but also more frequent since I don't have to try to figure out where a particular conversation fits. If you are subscribed to one or more of the individual show feeds, please subscribe to Everything so you don't miss anything moving forward. And I want you to know that I've thought about this quite a bit. I know there are some of you who might only want to listen to Process Driven and this move might initially feel like kind of a bummer. But, I think the way we listen to podcasts has changed, partially because there are so many. I know it's definitely changed for me over the last few years. I subscribe to dozens of shows and only a very few do I listen to every episode. Instead, I simply create playlists of the episodes that look interesting to me, and the trends show that I'm not in the minority here. One of the things I've struggled with for quite a while is monetizing the work I do – and that goes for all of the work I do, from design work for clients to selling my paintings to whether or not to run ads on my podcasts. And without getting too deep into it here, it all revolves around self-worth and how I assign or ascribe value to the work I do. But I think I've come up with a solution that Adrianne and I have been talking about for a while now. A few days ago I tweeted a Venn Diagram with creativity on one side and philanthropy on the other and that place in the middle of those two things is where I want to be. So the solution we've come up with is that we're going to donate the majority of any revenue that my creative endeavors generate into arts education and related non-profits. We'll have details on the actual organizations soon, but the big picture is that this allows me to value the work I do in a way other than what it can do for me. It actually becomes more valuable in that the worth of it directly helps more than just me. I'm incredibly excited about it and again more details are forthcoming but that's the big picture.I think that's enough for the moment. As I said, I'll have more details around all of this in the coming weeks. If you have questions or comments, you can find me on Twitter or Instagram @jefferysaddoris or you can email me at talkback@jefferysaddoris.com. As always, thank you for your time and your attention and for coming along with me on this ride.Happy New Year. If you have questions or comments, you can find me on Twitter or Instagram @jefferysaddoris or you can emailSupport the show (https://jefferysaddoris.com/#donate)

Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
In 2007 Bill Wadman started posting one portrait per day to a blog, three years before Instagram even existed for this now popular challenge. 173 days later, USA Today and The Times in London ran a feature on this unique project. Soon, 20,000 site visitors would show up each day to find out who Bill might photograph next. It was the project that unexpectedly launched this now respected New York City photographer's career. For the “On Talking Creativity” episode, Marco invited Jeffery Saddoris to the show. Jeffery was born in California and became a technical theater major in college. After working on scenery and costume design at different theaters in the US, he changed directions and became an instructor for HTML and Photoshop - which eventually led him to become an Art Director at Universal Studios. Since High-School, he has always explored photography and painting as a hobby and merged both passions together in mixed media art. After many years of practicing and teaching photography, he wanted to share and discuss the creative process in photography and art with the world. He started the website Faded & Blurred, which was a leading source of photographic inspiration from 2009-2015, and still is a great resource today. Jeffery joined NY photographer Bill Wadman in 2012 to co-host the popular weekly photography podcast “OTP - On Taking Pictures” which ran for 6 years and 326 episodes. Now Jeffery runs his own series of podcasts on creativity like “Process Driven”, Iterations”, or “In Between”. He’s also the author of a great photography guide “Photography by the Letter” (link: https://jefferysaddoris.com/photography-by-the-letter/). Jeffery’s current short bio states: Serial Conversationalist, Podcaster, Author, Photographer, Painter. And on this episode, Marco and Jeffery discuss the creative struggles and sources of inspiration that artists and non-artists constantly encounter in their lives. This episode is sponsored by: Skylum Luminar 3 - Simple and fast photo editing software http://bit.ly/PPN-Luminar3 and Marco Larousse Photography Workshops http://bit.ly/StreetPhotographyWorkshops Jeffery picks Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971) as his inspirational photographer/artist of the month. http://www.iconofgraphics.com/Alexey-Brodovitch/ Links to Jeffery Saddoris work and social media accounts: Website: https://jefferysaddoris.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jefferysaddoris/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jefferysaddoris Podcast: https://jefferysaddoris.com/everything/ Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month: Marco picks: “Photography by the Letter” by Jeffery Saddoris Link: https://jefferysaddoris.com/photography-by-the-letter/ Jeffery’s book is a comprehensive A-Z field guide for photographers. It’s visually a joy to look at and you can tell that he has spent a long time on composing the drawings and charts to explain the subject matter in a very organized and visual way. The book is structured in a way that you can look up a subject by the letter - for example, “A” like Angle of View or Aspect Ratio and read and look at the explanation and the accompanying drawings. And the subject matter ranges from old analog terms to modern digital photography terms. For example, you’ll find out how a bellow is used and how it relates to our modern macro extension tubes and Tilt-Shift lenses. And this makes this book a fun resource to explore for a photography beginner as well as a seasoned pro. This book will simply make you a more educated photographer. And it also inspires you to take action with photo exercises. The eBook is $20 and the hard copy is $30. Or you can currently pick up both in a digital bundle special for $40. https://jefferysaddoris.com/photography-by-the-letter/ Jeffery picks: “Avedon’s France: Old World, New Look” Hardback, 792 pages, Published by: Abrams & Chronicle Books Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2VAcHqh Publishers Website: https://www.abramsandchronicle.co.uk/book/9781419726002-avedons-france-old-world-new-look/ Richard Avedon was fascinated with France. Determining the “why” before the “how” in photography is essential to understanding your subject better and create stronger images. In each episode, they introduce you to an inspirational photographer of the month and also share an inspirational photo book of the month.
We're turning the tables today. Friend of the show and Episode 3 guest Mollie Goldstein is interviewing Bill Wadman himself on why he shoots portraits, how he deals with his subjects and their foibles while also juggling his own, and why he has the need to do these daily projects.

I’ve bought a Godox studio flash that I use with my Fuji X-T2. I want to make use of the hi-speed flash sync in order to cancel out most of the ambient light in locations where I can’t control the ambient light too well. My problem is that once I set my camera manually to 1/8000s at ISO 200, the EVF gives me the direct representation of this setting and makes the whole frame dark. The flash does have a modeling light but it’s way too dim to light the model properly for me to compose and focus through the EVF. I have been using a handheld LED flashlight to overcome this, but it’s annoying for me and the model. Is there a better way to do this or is this a drawback of Fuji or mirrorless cameras in general? Love all of the different the PPN shows! Question by: Garrett from Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. The last nine years of producing The Candid Frame have included hundreds of special and memorable conversations with great photographers. It’s also provided me not only unique insight into what it means to pursue one’s passion for making photographs, but also what it means to make the choice to lead a creative life. So, when my friend and fellow-photographer Bill Wadman posed the question as to what I’ve learned from all these conversations, we thought it a good idea to record our discussion and share it with you. Bill Wadman is the cohost along with Jeffery Saddoris of On Taking Pictures, a weekly podcast that examines many of the idea and themes that we touch on The Candid Frame. I highly recommend their show. Check it out. I think you’ll like what you hear. "We’ve been charged with telling new stories for a younger generation because they deserve what we all had — a mythology to call their own." Disney's announcement of new Star Wars films, theme parks, TV shows, and other goodies have us wondering — how much is too much? Do we need a new Spider-Man, a Fantastic Four reboot, more Star Trek, and another Avengers film? Where do artistic endeavors end and commercial franchises begin? Why do these stories keep repeating, despite our fatigue, and how do we keep them relevant? Special guest, geeky photographer and host of the On Taking Pictures podcast Bill Wadman.
