Waking from sleep after a while and recalling his sinful deed, which spelt death to him, Dasharatha proceeds to tell Kausalya how, while he was Prince Regent of Ayodhya, he went out a-hunting in the forest one day and heard during the last watch of the night the sound of a hermit boy filling his pitcher with water by submerging into Sarayu river. Mistaking the gurgling sound for the trumpeting of an elephant, Dasharatha hit the boy with an arrow which dug deep into his body and mortally wounded him. On approaching his quarry, he discovered the fatal blunder and tendered his heartfelt apology to the hermit boy, who asked him to extract the arrow from his body and report the matter to his aged parents. The boy died immediately as the arrow was taken out of his body. Recitation: 00:00 - 08:49 Translation: 08:50 - 22:51

On this auspicious Ram Navami week, Swami Mukundananda relates to us the untold story of the Divine Birth of Lord Ram. The virtuous and noble King of Ayodhya, Dasharatha has grown old and had a desire to have a child. He approached Sage Vasishtha and upon his instructions performed a Yagya or a ritual to please the Sun God to beget a child. The Yagya got completed successfully, the Fire god appeared after the Yagya and handed Dasharatha a pot of Kheer which Dasharatha distributed evenly to his three queens. The princes were conceived after the consumption of the Kheer. Months passed by after that and the time of the Divine Birth or the Avatar of Lord Ram came close. The Festivities started in Ayodhya in full swing, the river Sarayu was overflowing with joy and when the Sun reached its peak in the noon, in that auspicious moment, Kaushalya gave birth to Lord Ram. Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharata. Sumitra gave birth to Lakshmana and Shatrughna. King Dasharatha, the queens and the whole of Ayodhya was overjoyed to hear the news of the birth of the four sons. The Birthday of Lord Ram is celebrated as Ram Navami every year. It falls on the Ninth day of the Chaitra Navratri. On this special day, whoever prays to Lord Ram and Mother Sita with full Faith gets all the auspiciousness and their grace.

Everything we do in our everyday lives - from interpersonal relations to work, from travel to entertainment- are almost ubiquitously mediated through digital technologies. So much so that we can hardly prise apart the digital from the social. We live in a digital society that is increasingly complex and unpredictable, leading to new patterns in our existing social institutions and relations. While these changes bring in new opportunities, they also raise concerns about sustainability, equity and justice in a digital world. In response to some of these questions IIITB introduced an interdisciplinary MSc programme in Digital Society in 2015 which trains new-age professionals who would be ready to address complex realities of our digital worlds and to create a more inclusive digital society. As an extension of this programme, we also look to collaborate with other organizations that share this common goal and vision. Aapti, a bangalore-based research institution is one such organization. It generates public, policy-relevant, actionable and accessible knowledge from the frontiers of tech and society, about our networked lives, to support the creation of a fair, free, and equitable society. Today, we have with us its founder Dr. Sarayu Natarajan. Sarayu's wide expertise spans from management consulting (McKinsey and Company) to venture investing (Elevar Equity), from program development and management (Gray Matters Capital) to academic research. She has a PhD in Political Science from King's College London, a Master's in Public Policy from the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University, and a arts and law degree from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore (NLSIU). In today's episode, we will discuss Srayu's experience of establishing Aapti and the kind of work they are dong and their future goals.

They discuss how it is not big cases in High Courts and Supreme Courts that decide the true fundamental rights of Indian cities. Instead, rights are truly realised by how police stations and local courts operate in the country. By how India's Criminal Procedure Code and the Indian Penal Code are interpreted, followed or not followed by local authorities. Alok and Pavan also discuss the nature of Indian representative democracy, and what we as citizens have come to expect from our MLAs, MPs and other elected representatives. Alok Prasanna Kumar is a returning guest on Thale-Harate, a prolific writer and researcher, co-founder of the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, and a former Supreme Court lawyer.Suggested Podcast Episodes:- ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ vs ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ. The platform gig economy has brought several changes in the way work is performed and organised. Some kinds of work challenge the very underpinnings of labor and industrial laws - such as the need for a place of work and the space for collective bargaining. Tech mediated platform gig work while offering flexibility to those who seek it and low entry barriers, may also in its own way be expanding the margins of society leaving those who are doing such work with little recourse in the law or little opportunity to negotiate futures. In this context, Alok and Sarayu discuss futures of workers and discuss the ways in which politics and law needs to be imagined.

In this episode Raya, Treava Champagne and Lynn will discuss the book/movie The Shack.  (Please keep in mind that many details are discussed and therefore spoilers are inevitable) Publishers Summary: The novel is set in the American Northwest. The main character is Mackenzie Allen Phillips, a father of five called "Mack" by his family and friends. Four years prior to the main events of the story, Mack takes three of his children on a camping trip to Wallowa Lake near Joseph, Oregon, stopping at Multnomah Falls on the way. Two of his children are playing in a canoe when it flips and almost drowns Mack's son. Mack is able to save his son by rushing to the water and freeing him from the canoe's webbing but unintentionally leaves his youngest daughter Missy alone at their campsite. After Mack returns, he sees that Missy is missing. The police are called, and the family discovers that Missy has been abducted and murdered by a serial killer known as the "Little Ladykiller". The police find an abandoned shack in the woods where Missy was taken. Her bloodied clothing is found, but her body is not located. Mack's life sinks into what he calls "The Great Sadness". As the novel begins, Mack receives a note in his mailbox from "Papa", saying that he would like to meet with Mack that coming weekend at the shack. Mack is puzzled by the note—he has had no relationship with his abusive father since he left home at age 13. He suspects that the note may be from God whom his wife Nan refers to as "Papa". Mack's family leaves to visit relatives and he goes alone to the shack, unsure of what he will see there. He arrives and initially finds nothing, but as he is leaving, the shack and its surroundings are supernaturally transformed into a lush and inviting scene. He enters the shack and encounters manifestations of the three persons of the Trinity. God the Father takes the form of an African American woman who calls herself Elousia and Papa; Jesus is a Middle Eastern carpenter; and the Holy Spirit physically manifests as an Asian woman named Sarayu. The bulk of the book narrates Mack's conversations with Papa, Jesus, and Sarayu as he comes to terms with Missy's death and his relationship with the three of them. Mack also has various experiences with each of them. Mack walks across a lake with Jesus, sees an image of his (Earthly) father in Heaven with Sarayu, and has a conversation with Sophia, the personification of God's wisdom. At the end of his visit, Mack goes on a hike with Papa, now appearing as an older Native American male, who shows him where Missy's body was left in a cave. After spending the weekend at the shack, Mack leaves and is so preoccupied with his thoughts that he is nearly killed in an automobile accident. After his recovery, he realizes that he did not in fact spend the weekend at the shack, but that his accident occurred on the same day that he arrived at the shack. He also leads the police to the cave that Papa revealed, and they find Missy's body still lying there.
