TONY BIRCH IS GOING TO DIEThe brilliant writer and academic Dr Tony Birch was born in inner-city Melbourne, into a large family of Aboriginal, West Indian and Irish descent. An altar boy and exceptional student at his local Catholic primary school, in adolescence, Birch went 'off the rails' as a teenager. He was expelled from two high schools for fighting and found trouble with the police for the same reason. Although somewhat adrift following his expulsions, he remained a voracious reader – once, when he was arrested by police, all they found when they patted him down was a copy of Camus' The Outsider, which remains his favourite book.Birch has written a great deal about death and grief, most recently in his 2021 short story collection Dark As Last Night, where he interrogates the death of his brother Wayne. Here, he reads from the collection whilst musing on his own legacy and eventual funeral plans.Birch has been publishing short stories and poetry regularly since the 1980s, although his first collection, Shadowboxing, only appeared in 2006. Since this, he has published four more collections of short stories and poetry (Father's Day [2009], The Promise [2014], Broken Teeth [2016], and Common People [2017] and two novels (Blood [2011] and Ghost River [2015]).Among his awards are the Scanlon Prize and the Prize for Indigenous Writing (Victorian Premier's Literary Awards). He has also been shortlisted for the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction (NSW Premier's Literary Awards), the Steele Rudd Award (with both the original Queensland Premier's Literary Awards and the later Queensland Literary Awards), and the Miles Franklin Literary Award. In 2015, he joined Victoria University as the first recipient of its Dr Bruce McGuinness Indigenous Research Fellowship. His role sits within the Moondani Balluk Academic Unit and is linked to the University's creative arts and writing programs. He has also taught creative writing at the University of Melbourne for many years. In 2022, he was appointed as the third Boisbouvier Chair in Australian Literature at the University of Melbourne, following Richard Flanagan and Alexis Wright.Tony Birch (IG @Tony_Birch_)Marieke Hardy Is Going To Die is a podcast made by Marieke Hardy (IG @marieke_hardy).You can follow at IG @GoingToDiePodMusic by Lord Fascinator (IG @lordfascinator)Produced by Darren Scarce (IG @Dazz26)Video edits by Andy Nedelkovski (IG @AndyNeds)Artwork by Lauren Egan (IG @heylaurenegan)Photography by Eamon Leggett (IG @anxietyoptions)With thanks to Amelia Chappelow (IG @ameliachappelow)Camilla McKewen (IG @CamillaLucyLucy)and Rhys Graham (IG @RhysJGraham)Support the show via www.patreon.com/mariekehardy and drop an email to mariekehardyisgoingtodie@gmail.comWhilst acknowledging the privilege that comes with having the space to discuss death and mortality, we want to also recognise that discussing these topics can raise some wounds. PUBLIC VERSION. Singer/songwriter Jason McMaster (DANGEROUS TOYS, IGNITOR, WATCHTOWER, BROKEN TEETH) joins Adam and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to share his hard rocking career journey. From forming his first band at 17… to the 40 years he's now spent playing in WATCHTOWER… to why religion is afraid of rock n roll… to what the true meaning is behind the slogan “keep Austin weird”… to the joys and success that can come from not having an agenda… to how quickly DANGEROUS TOYS found success and the very famous musician who warned “that may not be a good thing”… to why the name of the band was only supposed to be temporary… to what it was like making the jump from playing in clubs to playing in big arenas and having videos in regular rotation on MTV and radio… to why he never fell victim to the typical rock star party antics… to his extraordinarily positive attitude about being content just playing rock n roll… to his unique style of singing and his work teaching music to kids through School Of Rock… to his philosophy that true fans never grow out of the things they're fans of… Jason's message of “be who you are, love what you love, and do what makes you happy” is one that will lift up everyone in THE MOVIE CRYPT audience. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a listener struggling with depression, Adam and Jason nerd out over their music collectibles, and Jason reveals how his early correspondence with James Hetfield wound up being included in METALLICA's incredibly comprehensive “Kill ‘Em All” and “Ride the Lightning” box sets! NOTE: This extended length episode also includes Jason's appearance during YORKIETHON 5 from December 2020! (Patreon only.)

Then a “movie star” in our industry stops by, Gary Archer. Gary makes custom dental prosthetics for movies and television shows. In this dear episode, our heroes discuss life's greatest battles. In simpler times this would have included how to defeat the enemies on a battlefield. But not any more. No, sir. In this dear episode, it is discussed what do in the event of breaking your goddamn tooth. Spoiler alert : swallow the bit broken off as it is said that it gives you mythical powers such as the ability to see through walls and grow keratin on your eyeballs - allegedly. Also discussed is dear Kyle's mugging off his fellow footballers with a unique comeback and dear Rob is a public service announcement about the 'Rona. Basically it's back. Well, it never went away. Also embarrassingly discussed is the peach scene from the 2017 movie Call Me By Your Name and, ahem, finishing techniques. We apologise.

Happy New Years Metalheads! Tonight we share a fun story of how a veteran Metal Singer saved the day for two of this falls most anticipated Tours. It Started With THIS: German/American heavy metal legends ACCEPT have recruited Jason McMaster (DANGEROUS TOYS, WATCHTOWER) to sing for the band as ACCEPT‘s longtime frontman Mark Tornillo, who is unable to make the gig because he is recovering from a “virus infection”. And Ended with THIS : "Unfortunately, luck has dealt me a gnarly knuckleball," ARMORED SAINT Vocalist John Bush wrote in his post. "I came down with an illness and even though it hasn't made me feel bad, it still has infiltrated my nasal and chest area and planted itself. "Luckily, longtime friend and Armored Saint fan Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys/ Broken Teeth) is coming to the rescue again. He's already helped Accept earlier this year on tour and now he's stepping into the batter's box for me. I am extremely grateful, and I know he'll kill it! We were there in CLEVELAND with John Bush and ARMORED SAINT and in PENNSYLVANIA when Jason Took over for Bush. On Take 6, Jonah and Reid mix things up and Take On a new episode segment entitled “Bros and Beers,” where the guys each invite a friend and fellow member of the Take it On community to engage in a free flowing conversation about what's going on in their lives, some of the content from previous episodes, and provide an example of what it looks like to Take it On practice. To start the episode, Jonah can't stop gushing about his new romance with running (2:30) and the importance of implementing the mirror test in daily life. This leads to an important conversation about alcohol, with Isaac sharing a powerful, life-changing experience (10:15). Then, Reid and Gabe stress the importance of self-discipline, both in the gym and in the dentists office (16:30). After a fire alarm at OSU (classic buckeyes), the guys conclude the conversation with discussions on learning from failure (29:50), positive social media content, the power of routine, and what tunes they're rocking out to.
