“One of the biggest stumbling blocks for organizations is an unwillingness to be brutally honest about the challenges they face.” There's no question leadership is becoming a more challenging role than it was 5-10 years ago. The rapid pace of change, the on-going uncertainties, even the very nature of the way we work have made being a leader a more strenuous and stressful job. But another factor that's making it challenging for people to succeed at leadership is that many people in leadership roles today haven't asked themselves a critical question before taking on the role – why do you want to be a leader? This question serves as the starting point for my conversation with best-selling author Adam Bryant about what those interested in taking on the leadership reins need to prepared for in this latest episode of my “Leadership Biz Cafe” podcast. Adam is probably best known for his New York Times column, “The Corner Office”. He's also the best-selling author of “The Corner Office: Indispensible and Unexpected Lessons from CEOs on How To Lead and Succeed” as well as “Quick and Nimble - Lessons From Leading CEOs on How To Create a Culture of Innovation”. Adam was a guest on my podcast two years ago when we talked about his book “The CEO Test - Master The Challenges That Make or Break All Leaders” and I'm delighted to welcome him back so we can talk about his latest, “The Leap to Leader: How Ambitious Managers Make the Jump to Leadership”. Adam and I had a frank and fascinating conversation about the realities of what it takes to move into a leadership role. But even those in leadership positions will benefit from hearing what Adam has to say. I hope you'll make some time to give this episode a listen, and do let me know what you think. https://open.spotify.com/episode/2x8e0p2X20HeVwe63t69NB?si=46193fe60a454f71 Noteworthy links: Buy Adam's book “The Leap to Leader” on Amazon* Learn more about Adam's work - adambryantbooks.com Listen to my previous conversation with Adam – Episode #91: Adam Bryant | Mastering Challenges That Make Or Break All Leaders *sponsored link that helps to support this podcast. Our guest is Adam Levin, author of multiple novels and most recently, the author of MOUNT CHICAGO. This sprawling novel features the city of Chicago in the midst of natural disaster and centers two lives, comedian and writer Solomon Gladman, as well as his biggest fan, Apter Schutz. The book delves into grief, metafiction, publishing, parrots, and so much more that really defies a conventional summary. Levin chose another book difficult to summarize, J.D. Salinger's FRANNY AND ZOOEY. Following the youngest siblings of the Glass family, Salinger explores themes of spiritual emptiness, creativity, and social isolation in a novel that feels very much like a stage play in its form and construction. We reflect on how there's always more to discover in reading and rereading a novel, even generations after its initial publication. In Adam's second appearance on the show, we discuss his brand new novel, Mount Chicago, which follows a handful of characters living in the shadow of a "terrestrial anomaly" that befalls Chicago's downtown. Both hilarious and tragic, the book shows off Levin's great versatility as a storyteller, metafictionist, humorist, and, maybe to some extent, autobiographer. We also talk about birds (again). If you enjoy reading interviews of CEOs sharing what shapes their understanding and approach to leadership, chances are you've probably read one of the over 500 interviews Adam Bryant wrote for his popular New York Times column, “Corner Office”. This Week on the Live Your Light Show: This week’s guest on the Live Your Light Show, we welcome Adam Flores. We asked Adam to be a guest on the Live Your Light Show because he is a young revolutionary leader in business. For many years he struggled to get his message and business ideas out into the world. His frustration led him to become a radical student in leadership, social media, and Internet marketing. His ability to combine the best fundamental principles in each category paved the way for Adam to build his business beyond a million dollars in sales. Although he’s had a lot of success, it wasn’t enough for Adam. His genuine passion and charisma to see people and organizations win in the marketplace has been his driving force to become an expert in his craft. He now spends his time consulting for individuals, businesses, and organizations across the country. I hope you enjoy. In This Conversation We Cover: How Adam started from the very bottom & became a self-made millionaire Adam was 5-years-old when he witnessed his parents’ split due to financial reasons. In his eyes, he was stripped out of the women he loved the most because of money so he decided at a young age that he was going to be wealthy. He associated that you have to have money to stay close to the ones you love & Had to seek healing from this later on. This is an example of using the negative events in the past to pave the future. That’s where his ambition came from. How he became a millionaire by 23-years-old How he entered the coaching world. How Adam made the difficult decision to leave his steady ‘safe’ job to follow his passion and live his light by starting his own business. Welcome to Get Up in the Cool, Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I’m real proud to present my jam and conversation with fiddler and melodic clawhammer banjoist extraordinaire Adam Hurt. Adam wanted to do an episode on early Galax fiddling, a subject about which he’s very knowledgeable, so I expected this to be an educational episode, and it is. What I didn’t necessarily expect was a deeply personal story about the role of Old Time in Adam’s life. I haven’t read or listened to a lot of his other interviews, so I’m not sure how typical it is for him to talk like this in front of a mic, but, suffice it to say, the stuff he says explains a lot about his playing, and, you know, how he got to be the musician we all admire so much. Also, musically, this episode is probably the sweetest one yet. I’m really happy to share it with you; you’re gonna love it.
