Send us a textThis month on the UncommonTEEN Podcast, we are diving into the friendship of David and Jonathan. They had a friendship that was different from most friendships. It was a friendship of trust, loyalty, and honor.  We can read about this friendship in 1 Samuel. In 1 Samuel 17, we see David, this teenage boy who nobody saw as anything special, rise when everyone else was scared and defeat Goliath. After defeating Goliath, King Saul looked at David and was blown away and went to talk to David. This is where 1 Samuel 18 picks up.  1 Samuel 18:1. It says, “As soon as David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan (this is Saul's son) was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”  In other words, Jonathan saw that there was something different about David and he knew that he was someone that he wanted to have in his corner fighting for him.  Verse 2, “And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father's house. Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants. Think about this: David was just a shepherd boy. There was nothing special about him. His dad didn't even consider him as someone important, but God did. Culturally speaking, he was a nobody, and now you have the King's son, Jonathan, who is royalty wanting to be David's friend. Their social status meant nothing to them.  When those verses say that Jonathan gave David his robe, his armor, his sword, his bow, and his belt, that was a sign from Jonathan that he would be loyal in their friendship. And Jonathan was, even when King Saul was jealous of David and tried to kill him multiple times.  Jonathan was a loyal friend until his death. David was also a loyal friend to Jonathan, so much so that after his death, he took Jonathan's son in as his own. This friendship wasn't something that eitherLadies, we have some exciting news! Rebecca is a GP and an NIHR In Practice Fellow, and works alongside Trish at the Nuffield Department of Primary Health Care Sciences at the University of Oxford. Title of paper: What are the challenges to quality in modern, hybrid general practice? A multi-site longitudinal studyAvailable at: https://doi.org/10.3399/BJGP.2024.0184Quality in primary care is a multidimensional construct embracing effectiveness, efficiency, safety, patient-centredness, equity, continuity, accessibility, and more. We report on how UK practices have striven to deliver on these aspects of quality as they move to a hybrid model that combines in-person with remote and digital care. The context for quality is currently very challenging, with resource constraints, staff shortages, and weak infrastructure. Digital systems intended to increase efficiency have produced some benefits for some people but have created new forms of inefficiency, increased fragmentation of care, contributed to staff stress, and widened inequities of access.

New Zealand introducing a capital gains tax is back in the spotlight following the release of the bombshell IRD report. Sir Ian Taylor has voiced support for a capital gains tax and reckons other business people he knows would be happy to pay one. He explained that a capital gains tax would help cover the significant costs New Zealand faces in terms of health, education and infrastructure. "That's how businesses operate. We took risks, there were times where things looked really tough, but we got through those. But equally, if I come out the end of this and somebody ended up buying this- which isn't the intention- but if they did, I would fully expect that there would be a margin." Is Dairy Good or Bad For You?

One of the most common questions I've run into during my time as a nutritionist is whether dairy is good or bad for you, and what role it plays in a whole foods diet. Indeed, I myself have gone back and forth on this question over the years. I used to staunchly advocate a dairy-free diet for everyone, arguing that dairy is universally inflammatory and that it wasn't necessary for bone health and is pushed far too hard, because of subsidies from the dairy industry. And it remains true that the “milk, it does a body good” message is subsidized by the dairy industry and that many important minerals for bone health can come from other foods, such as small fatty fish with the bones in and fermented foods and dark leafy greens. However, in recent years, I have become increasingly aware of the benefits of GOOD QUALITY, FULL FAT dairy for individuals who can tolerate it. I have even learned about some of the anti-inflammatory benefits of good quality, full fat dairy. So in this episode we will discuss what the science shows about dairy consumption, and how it could be a beneficial part of nutrient dense food for those who tolerate it. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/elanie-welch/support
