Welcome to another episode of the Testing Peers. On this episode, Simon, Chris, David and Russell look back at the huge success that was the first Testing Peers Conference held in Nottingham on 14th March. Before diving into it, David leads the banter and asks the peers about the most retro thing we all own and the Peers all reminisce with all things tech, cars and movies. With the main retrospective, the Peers divide the conversation into 4 main sections using our MetroRetro board - including the topics of "what should we start doing", "What should we stop doing", "What should we keep doing?" and the "hopes for the future". So many people and organisations to thank that helped make PeersCon happen such as the venue, the Trent Conference Centre. As official podcast partner to Cambridge Tech Week 2024, we're delighted to run our first full episode dedicated to the event, starting with the recording of the panel at the Cambridge launch, and an interview with Russ Shaw from the London launch event. The Cambridge event really highlighted the desire to bring the outside in – to create a #SXSW for Cambridge and the tech space, where the objective is to bring the outside in. The panellists (Carmen Palacios-Berraquero, CEO, Nu Quantum, David Moore, CEO, Pragmatic, Pam Garside, Chair, Cambridge Angels, and Harriet Fear MBE) had an open discussion about innovation, funding, and challenges of growth, as well as sharing feedback on last year's event and their wishes for 2024.As one of the events ‘ambassadors', Russ Shaw, Founder of Tech London Advocates, talked about Cambridge's global reputation for Science and Innovation – “Cambridge punches enormously above its weight in terms of its size and scale”.And we also caught up with Douglas MacDonald, Partner who heads up the national tech sector at Mills & Reeve who are also one of the event sponsors (others include Rathbones, Cambridge Management Consulting, UK Telecoms Innovation Network UKTIN, HSBC and Cambridge Consultants). And of course, we caught up with the man himself, chair of the organising committee Chris Bruce, to find out which three words are on the top of his mind for 2024. In this episode, we're taking a look at how the explosion in our demand for data storage has led to needing more capacity than ever before, and whether long-vanished ideas from our computing past could influence technological innovation in the future.  In 2022 the world generated 97 Zettabytes of data. It has been predicted that, by 2025, that number will almost have doubled to 181 Zettabytes. Although at the rate generative AI and machine learning is expanding, that figure could be even higher. As the Head of the Hewlett Packard Enterprise storage division, Senior Vice President Patrick Osborne has storage at the forefront of everything he does. He sees just how much his customers' needs are growing every year and is always actively looking for new methods and fabrics to meet those needs.Alongside those requirements for greater data storage also sits the need for faster data processing - and there are a number of technologies nearing maturity which could revolutionise the space. Aidong Xu is Head of Semiconductor Capability at Cambridge Consultants, and is keeping a close eye on these technologies, especially in the memory space. For him, the big challenge is combining performance with efficiency. However, whilst we're looking at the future of data storage, it's hard not to draw parallels with the past. Colin Eby from the National Museum of Computing knows a thing or two about that, guiding us through the history of the storage technologies which marked our pathway to today - some of which, in the decades since they fell out of favour, may have come round once more. But what if the future of data storage isn't data at all, but something more organic. Mark Bathe is a professor of biological engineering at MIT, specialising in DNA storage, and what that can mean for the future of our digital archiving needs.  Sources and statistics cited in this episode:Zettabytes usage - https://www.statista.com/statistics/871513/worldwide-data-created/Sales of storage units - https://www.statista.com/forecasts/1251240/worldwide-storage-unit-sales-volumeHard drive shipment figures - https://www.statista.com/statistics/398951/global-shipment-figures-for-hard-disk-drives/Random access DNA memory using Boolean search in an archival file storage system - https://www.nature.com/articles/s41563-021-01021-3

Part 2 of an Interview with CEO and Co-Founder of The Wand Company takes you to where no one has gone before in a podcast.  Chris Barnardo is witty, fun to chat with and offers up fantastic insights into the modern world of specialized manufacturing.  His career spans 3 and a half decades and is filled with stories that will amaze you and make you laugh at the same time.  Join us as he shares his journeys through a myriad of challenges in the quest to make some of the finest prop replicas ever made for fans of Pokémon, Fallout, Harry Potter, Dr Who, and my personal favorite, Star Trek.  Chris started out as a designer, but went back to college in his thirties to gain an engineering degree. In 1994 he went to work at Cambridge Consultants where he became a named inventor on over 25 patents, and secured £4M in venture capital funding to commercialize his invention of a thick-film, flexible electroluminescent display. In 2005 Chris launched the popular single parents' website Dadcando.com which provided guidance and support to single dads (and mums). In 2008 he designed and created the Plop Trumps card game (Firebox.com's number one selling product that Christmas), which has gone on to sell over half a million packs in the UK alone. In 2009 Chris founded The Wand Company (thewandcompany.com) with Richard Blakesley. The following year, the pair took The Wand Company into the British TV show Dragons' Den (Shark Tank, US) where their pitch for the ‘Kymera Wand' – the world's first motion-sensitive, button-less, universal remote control, attracted record investment offers from all the Dragon Investors. The Wand Company has since successfully launched, Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor Who universal remote control Sonic Screwdrivers, their iconic Star Trek The Original Series Phaser and Bluetooth Communicator, a range of Fallout replicas and has most recently been working with Pokémon to bring the first accurate, premium Poké Ball replicas to market for Pokémon's 25th anniversary year which launched in February 2021. Chris is the author of three books, Made With Dad, Dadcando and Dragonolia, lives in Essex and has four children. Thanks for listening. Ever since I started doing this podcast, it has consistently proven to be one of the greatest joys in my life.  I get to talk with intelligent, knowledgeable, and experienced folks about things that matter.  And then, every once in awhile, I get to do an interview with someone who in addition to all of those things, is also just SO MUCH FUN.  Kindred spirits that remind me I am not alone in this world. This is my first episode in which I got to talk with someone on a different continent than my own.  He dreams about iconic objects, works out the engineering obstacles associated with them, and then brings some of the coolest things in the world (in my admittedly biased opinion) to life.  This two part interview with Chris Barnardo, is filled with background on him personally as well as his professional journey.  It's also filled with wonderful tributes to all of us in "Geekdom" who look to the worlds of Star Trek, Fallout, and Harry Potter (among others) to help us cope with and make sense of the world around us.Chris started out as a designer, but went back to college in his thirties to gain an engineering degree. These companies are often integral to the process of bringing a new product to the market. They can help with early-stage design, funding, marketing, and more. This year, we got the opportunity to speak with Jaquie Finn from Cambridge Consultants about the company's work in the industry.Consultancies like Cambridge Consultants are the unsung heroes of the product world, often living behind the scenes, creating products for others, or spinning off divisions as they are created. While you may never hear their name, you might very well know their products. In the case of Cambridge Consultants, they have been involved in products ranging from the first wireless pacemaker to the Bluetooth stack in most devices, which became part of Qualcomm, from air traffic control systems to the push-to-talk satellite technology for Iridium, they've done it all.At CES this year, the company was talking about the evolution of personal sensor technology. Today, most monitoring is done with wearable technologies - from smartwatches to headbands. But, wearable technologies have limitations that prevent proper compliance. There are gaps in the data because of device charging or swapping of hardware. There are communication glitches because of interference and middle technologies, like phones. And, there are inconsistencies between brands and models. In a design for a hospital of the future, Cambridge Consultants ran a three-month test of a contactless monitoring solution aimed at helping to eliminate some of these issues. The test got data on heart rate, temperature, respiration, and consciousness simply through cameras, with no need for wearable technologies. In a hospital, this would make monitoring easier, with no wearables to clean, no batteries to charge. Nurses could focus on the results as opposed to the technology. For more information about the projects that Cambridge has done, check out the company's website.Interview by Marlo Anderson of The Tech Ranch and Daniele Mendez of The New Product Launchpad.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy.
