It includes money earmarked to accelerate the adoption of AI in sectors as far flung as health care and agriculture. The feds say this will help to 'secure Canada's AI advantage." But does Canada even have an advantage in AI compared to our neighbors? Are Canadian companies and industries doing enough to embrace this technology? And is there a potential downside if we embrace AI too quickly? In this episode, we are joined by Benjamin Morris, Chief Delivery Officer & Co-owner at Pluribus Digital. With extensive experience in government collaboration, Ben is a seasoned professional well-versed in navigating the complexities of working with government agencies. He is passionate about driving impactful change in the public sector and offers valuable insights into strategies, processes, and best practices for successful collaborations between government entities and external partners. Discussion Points - What sort of bogus strategy, or misconception do you want to set the record straight on? 1:59 What led Pluribus Digital to specialize in the government sector? Could you share a brief overview of your journey and any key experiences that influenced your company's focus on government-related projects? 3:26 How does the business process of working with technology in the government sector typically operate? Could you shed some light on the types of approvals or processes involved in an agency like yours, and how you navigate them? 5:16 What's the team structure in government tech projects? Explain the project lifecycle, challenges, and opportunities when working with government agencies.13:26 How hard does the government negotiate on pricing? 20:38 What was the motivation behind starting a nonprofit organization consisting of a select few companies driven to accelerate the government's digital transformation? 26:31 Tell us a little bit about the trucking and traffic management industry. 30:27 What's your perspective on AI? What's the government doing with it? 33:18 Could you provide insights into the company policies or checks in place that strike a balance between utilizing AI for learning and innovation, while avoiding potential risks and safeguarding sensitive information? 37:48 Where do you hang out and talk about and discuss the best practices in the government space for the agencies? 40:57 What are you looking forward to? 43:34 Show notes - The process is pretty standard to be operating in Agile methodology, you have something like a scrum flavor of Agile, that's the mainstream of government right now. 11:55 Sometimes the government can move a little bit slower, but often, that's for very legitimate reasons. Because you're not just talking about “let's improve this process or something else”, you're talking about “Hey, maybe we need to consider a policy change or work with a wider stakeholder group to get that bigger thing done”. 16:53 If you hear about big government project failures, it's probably because the policies are maybe a little too convoluted. And then you're trying to build a solution that meets all the requirements of a somewhat convoluted policy. And if you could only do some small things to simplify the policy, then you could make everything just work better, cost less and be simpler for people to use. 18:08 One of the programs that we support is login.gov. And, that is a mechanism for people to log in and gain access to services. So you can't just say, “Oh, well, let's not worry about that, the 1% over in this corner”, you have to find some way to service those people. 24:23 There's a lot of excitement in government, certainly a lot of signals about using AI in various government use cases. And so that we see that as a need, something that our customers are asking for, and something that we've had a chance to apply in some areas. 33:56 There's also the defensive side of it (AI), how might it be used or misused in interactions with the government? So if someone is filling out an application for benefits, and there's some kind of written description portion, then there may be issues if there may be ways to use Chat GPT, that would not be ideal. It could be a tool for fraud or other things. 39:09 People value coming together and, just engaging as owners in practical professional support groups and sometimes almost like an emotional support group. 42:48 That's really that open space now. How can we not just have technology in government or automate some things, but how can we make things much more natively digital and therefore, scalable and fast and cheaper to operate, and more reliable? 44:17 Myth-Busted - Government and technology are either super advanced with futuristic interfaces or stuck with outdated systems. If you add up all the proceeds and earnings from global financial crime, it would make the fifth largest economy in the world – roughly the same size as the Indian or British economies. Included in financial crime these days, is the circumvention of the sanctions that were imposed on Russia and its oligarchs last year. But the Russians are getting clever about squirreling their money away. For this, the latest episode of the 3Sixty Insights #HRTechChat video podcast, our guest was Michael Spataro, chief delivery officer for Legion, a provider of advanced technologies for workforce management (WFM). Michael and I enjoyed a wide-ranging, at once practical and philosophical discussion of organizations' relationship with their hourly workforce in the retail and service industries. Legion's software excels in helping employers in these industries support a strong, positive employee experience for their hourly staff. In the summer of 2020, Legion published a report sharing the findings of a survey the vendor conducted. Respondents comprised about 500 wage and hourly employees and approximately the same number of managers, all in retail and the service industries. An top-line breakdown of the many findings is available in this press release. According to the survey's results, notably, two out of three top reasons for leaving an organization are essentially the same for employees and their managers. For wage employees, these top three reasons are a lack of scheduling empowerment, poor communication, and an inability to get paid early. For managers, the top three are the lack of tools that would make it easier for them to communicate with their employees, an inability to get paid early, and a desire to reduce the time they spend on administrative tasks such as scheduling. Note that for the one that is not as similar, it pertains to the same issue nonetheless: scheduling. Notice also that all these concerns leading managers and their staff alike to leave their jobs in these industries all have to do, palpably, with the quality of their experience with the employer. If an employer were to address these, the payoff in their workforce's relationship with the organization's customers would probably improve significantly. How do we know this? Michael and I delved into it a bit. For one, it's a fundamental respect for the Service-Profit Chain, a well-documented idea detailed in Harvard Business Review. The central tenet of the Service-Profit Chain says floor associates satisfied in their work and its effects on their work-life balance are more apt to treat customers well, which, in turn, leads to better retention of both. With this in mind, we discussed the past two years' impact on employee satisfaction in these types of roles. It hasn't always been the case everywhere, but the majority of hourly staff have long struggled to thrive in these industries. It can be thankless work. It isn't just the pay, which has tended to be low. The entire employee experience has historically left a lot to be desired in these types of roles. For hourly jobs in retail and the service industries, as Michael puts it, the pandemic has precipitated a major power shift in the employer-employee relationship. All I will add is that the past two years have brought a festering inverse of a healthy Service-Profit Chain to the surface. Look at it either way, and the ramifications are clear. "There's no shortage of workers, but the availability of workers willing to do retail or hospitality jobs, where the employee experience is poor, has dwindled," Michael says. They're holding out for better pay and better conditions overall. It's the reality of the Great Resignation in these sectors among these employee demographics. Call it the Great Resignation or something else, even. The terminology doesn't matter so much. What does matter, far more, is that the pandemic created a scenario wherein employees in these kinds of roles have been able to exert more influence over the conditions of their employment and its effects on their overall lives. “It's more than better pay," Michael says. "Employees want to interact with their employer" in much the same way they do as customers "with every other company in their life.”

Active travel is one of the most exciting areas of growth and opportunity within urban mobility - the kind of getting from A to B where your legs, arms and heart have to do their fair share of the work, rather than a massive energy consuming machine. When we think about what more active travel in places means, it's about creating more options for us to move more. This can have a massive impact on our physical and mental health, the air quality in our overly congested cities by getting more commuters out of cars and onto bikes and footpaths, and the UK's collective effort of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. But active travel is also about seizing a potentially huge economic opportunity. This is the first in a series of episodes where we begin to explore the opportunities for UK companies in the global market for active travel products and solutions. Throughout the series we'll be hearing from leading figures in business, local government, academia and the wider active travel world. We begin in this episode with Neil Fulton, our Chief Delivery Officer who's leading a new active travel programme, as well as Catapult Associate, Scott Cain who's a passionate advocate for the benefits that active travel can offer people, places and the wider economy. Eric Reuveni is the Chief Delivery Officer at Scorpion. The Delivery department delivers Scorpion products, including websites, advertising campaigns, and landing pages. Mobile ResponsivenessToday, over 60% of visitors are now visiting websites on mobile instead of on desktop. This makes it increasingly important for your business to have a strong mobile presence. So what's the difference between marketing your company on mobile phones versus desktops? Eric explains that you don't want to deliver the same information on mobile as on desktop because customers are in different stages of the buying cycle. Typically, if they are visiting on mobile, their need is more urgent and your call to action needs to be tailored to that need. “We have to make sure that the user intent is taken into account so that someone on the mobile device isn't necessarily taken through the same funnel than someone who is just kind of looking for information about plumbers or plumbing…” User Experience > “The user experience is essentially… their journey. What are they looking for and how is that information ultimately served to them?” You want to give customers the information they need right away. Matching user intent as closely as possible will help your users find what they are looking for on your site quickly. There are two major ways that having a mobile responsive site impacts your business success: If someone has a strong website set up for mobile, a user will have a positive experience and is more likely to engage as a lead or customer. On the flip side, if your site is not responsive and a customer has a bad experience, they will likely be lost to a competitor. Google also understands the value of mobile responsiveness and often favors sites with mobile responsiveness over those without. A high percentage of people using mobile want to contact you so it's crucial to have your phone number readily available and ensure that scheduling a consultation is easy. Information about your services and company history is often of secondary importance on mobile. Mobile LayoutEric emphasizes the mantra of “less is more” as a driving factor of success for a business site. This can be hard to pare down because businesses have so much information, but you really want your site to highlight the most crucial pieces of content that will cause your customer to act. His advice: You will increase your jobs and revenue when you reduce confusion and clutter.
