Many of us are deeply affected, probably more so than we even know, by the suffering in Israel and Gaza. I didn't release the last episode (though I did have one ready) because it felt bizarre not to address or at least acknowledge the situation, but I was absolutely drained. I was scared for the Hamas hostages, worried about my brother in Israel, terrified for the Palestinians...in short, there was no energy left over and I had nothing to say outside of the small circle of family and few loved ones checking in. This mini-sode is just an acknowledgment, a moment to ask us all to pause, not fill the silence we may be seeing from others with our own assumptions, respect one another's grief and pain, try not to add to the violence rhetorically, emotionally, or otherwise, and be a source of light if and where we can. May the Source of Peace send peace to all who mourn, And comfort to all who are bereaved.May the Source of Strength, who blessed the ones before us,Help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing. And let us say, Amen. MORE:The Mourner's Kaddish is a very holy prayer, dating back almost 2000 years to the time of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Mi Sheberach is the traditional prayer said for healing, and to bring to mind those who are suffering, and need divine goodness. Here is Debbie Friedman's rendition of the beautiful and soothing prayer, in the tune I and many others grew up with. Support the showLike the show? Support it! Or don't, that's cool too. Lara Downes – Love at Last (PENTATONE) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Lara Downes by Love at Last is a new recording by pianist Lara Downes featuring music of healing and hope. The album contains music that came out of the darkest period of the global pandemic. Downes recalls hearing those years referred to as unprecedented times, but that's not entirely accurate, she says. “When we are immersed as classical musicians in a tradition that goes back so many centuries, and we know the stories behind the music, then we're very familiar with the cycles of war and plague, and all of the tragedies that humans endure. So I started thinking about the ways that music could support a feeling of connection across time and place and understanding of history. This continuum, this past, present and future continuum. And then I started amassing music, and it was a really beautiful process.” More From Lara Downes 2023 Lara Downes performs a spring-themed Tiny Desk Concert full of renewal 2022 Classical Woman of the Year: Lara Downes 2022 Lara Downes reflects on the music of Scott Joplin 2021 Pianist Lara Downes re-centers the music of the Great Migration 2019 Pianist Lara Downes celebrates the power and artistic legacy of women in new album What made you decide on the title of Love at Last for this collection of music? “It comes from a poem by 19th-century writer Shaul Tchernichovsky. He was a Ukrainian poet who later emigrated to Jerusalem. The poem had been set by a singer songwriter named Debbie Friedman in the ‘70s, and it was a song that we used to sing in temple when I was a kid. “He wrote the poem when he was a young man at the very turn of the century in Odessa. But he was about to witness so many terrible things, the antisemitism that was going to ravage his community in Ukraine, two World Wars. And this poem of his begins with, ‘Laugh at all my dreams, my dearest laugh. And I repeat anew that I still believe in man as I still believe in you. Let the times be dark with hatred. I believe in years beyond, love at last shall bind all people in an everlasting bond.'” The piece that opens this recording is Dawn, by Czech composer Jaroslav Ježek. It's a work that you performed at the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C., a few years ago, and most of your audience was in tears. Can you talk about this song and why it has such an impact on those who hear it? “This song was played on the radio in Prague every day during the Nazi occupation, and it was kind of a secret message of resistance — a reminder to the Czech people that there would be another dawn, a brighter day. And I didn't know that history when I played it in this room full of people who had this visceral connection with that music that was handed down from their parents and grandparents. And the emotion around it just was staggering.” You created an arrangement of a piece by Margaret Bonds. It's the Credo No. 2, and it's from a larger work. Can you talk a little bit about this piece and how it is still relevant today? “She wrote her credo inspired by the text from W.E.B. Dubois, a prose poem that he wrote in 1904. In the 1960s, Bonds took that text and wrote a large piece for baritone soloist, chorus and orchestra, also called The Credo, bringing his words to life in the middle of the civil rights movement. And just thinking about all of the generations who have fought for this American promise and how we continue to do that. We're certainly living in times that are complicated and challenging when it comes to race All of the pieces on this record. They're all reminding us that tomorrow is a new day, and that means a new chance.” Tree of Life To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.

After her soulful performance during Stephen Wise Temple's Friday-night Shabbat services, singer, songwriter, and composer Elana Arian joins Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback and Senior Cantor Emma Lutz for this edition of "Search for Meaning" to discuss her musical journey. From cassette recordings of four-part harmonies with her musical family during her days as a "faculty brat" at the URJ Kutz Camp, Elana has morphed from a classical musician to a secular folk singer to now one of the preeminent voices in modern Jewish music. When she sits down and riffs with Emma, the two buzz with energy when talking about harmonizing and improvisation, the influence of Debbie Friedman, the excitement and beauty of the High Holy Days, and Divine inspiration.
Congregation B'nai Jeshurun Music Director Matt Turk sits down with legendary Cantor Jeffrey Klepper to discuss how Cantor Klepper, Rabbi Daniel Friedlander and Debbie Friedman “torpedoed" Reform Judaism, Jazz legend Arnie Lawrence, Rabbi Chaim Stern's importance and bringing guitar to liturgical music. Since we've started the podcast there have been more instances of explicit Jewish content for characters we've covered. We'll be revisiting our favs, The Thing and Kitty Pryde! Ma'yan: The Jewish Women's Project was founded by the JCC in 1993 to serve as a catalyst and a resource for women working for change within the Jewish community. During its existence, Ma'yan promoted Jewish ritual from a new perspective through programs such as its feminist Passover Seder and innovative women's Haggadah, while continuing to focus on advancing the status of womenstatus within the Jewish communal world. In today's episode of 76West, Ma'yan Director Eve Landau and Cofounder Barbara Dobkin join Rabbi Joy Levitt to discuss the origins of the first women's seder, and how the haggadah they developed is still influencing the way we think about the seder today. Note: this episode contains an excerpt from Debbie Friedman's “Miriam's Song” from her January 1996 performance at Carnegie Hall. It was such a blessing to bring together the Temple Isaiah Jazz Ensemble – also known as Steve Fox & Friends – for two very special pre-produced Shabbat services in spring 2021. Filmed live on Vollmer Deck, each service featured not just time-honored Jazz Shabbat favorites but also spoken words of history & blessing from folks who have been part of this Temple Isaiah tradition since the beginning. This unique album features Rabbi Jaclyn Cohen & Cantor Tifani Coyot with Steve Fox (piano), Larry Muradian (bass), Deborah Pearl (vocals), Rabbi Steven Carr-Reuben (drums), Joel Bienefeld (winds) as well as interviews with George Kahn, Cathy Klayman, Rabbi Bob Gan, Cantor Evan Kent & Steve Fox. With gratitude to the folks who made this possible, especially the production team of Drama ¾ led by David Fickas and Pranav Shah.

This week, we ponder creating your own separate traditions before returning to join the Jewish people, visions of angels and holy prosecuting attorneys, and calendars. Plus, some fun bonus stories of said prosecuting attorney messing with some rabbis. Full transcript here. Also, a neat fact that we didn't mention in the episode is that the Orit is the five books of the Torah, plus Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, written in Ge'ez rather than Biblical Hebrew; there's a picture here. Commedia dell'arte is an Italian theatrical genre popular in the 1400s, wherein the characters are stock caricatures that have the same names even in wildly different works. HaSatan doesn't map onto any of them particularly well, but does feel a little like Arlecchino. The Cheese Man appears in Buffy the Vampire Slayer s4ep22, "Restless." The stories of HaSatan come from Job, Kiddushin 81a, Bava Batra 16a, and Rosh Hashanah 16b. You can read Aurora Levins Morales' "V'ahavta" here. Also, here's Debbie Friedman's "Not By Might, Not By Power" and the lyrics to it.This week's reading was Zechariah 2:14–4:7. Next week's reading is Kings I 3:15–4:1.Our music is by the band Brivele. In today's episode, Debbie Friedman (partner at Cozen O'Connor) joins the podcast to talk about the issues that employers should consider with their employee handbooks.
The Season 2 opening episode of Jewish Songwriter included a hilarious and heartwarming story from this week's guest, Elana Arian, and her special connection and encounters with Debbie Friedman. We finally get to share the rest of this amazing conversation and share Elana's "Yih'yu L'ratzon" as well as the story of it's creation. Spoiler Alert: Elana was a new mother with 10 years of experience as a successful touring secular singer/songwriter but this song was not only her first Jewish composition, but the first composition that came to her in complete form. Listen to "Yih'yu L'ratzon" and all of the compositions from this season of Jewish Songwriter on the official Jewish Songwriter Playlist on YouTube and Spotify. Elana Arian is one of the leading voices in contemporary Jewish music. A composer, multi-instrumentalist, and recording artist, Elana inspires communities across the country with her soulful songwriting and spirit. She recently released her third album of original music - A Spark of Light – a collaboration with Grammy-winning producer, Ben Wisch. Elana has served on the faculty of both Shirei Chagiga in London and the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, working as a teaching artist in the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music. In addition to her work as a guest Artist in Residence for communities across the United States, Elana worked in the Friday worship ensemble at Central Synagogue for 13 years. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Tanglewood, and perhaps most memorably, five separate appearances at the (Obama) White House. As always, you can listen to all of the compositions from this season on the Jewish Songwriter YouTube Playlist or Spotify Playlist. And please subscribe to the podcast and leave a review on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, GooglePlay or wherever you listen. If you are familiar at all with North American Jewish music, it should come as no surprise, that as with almost any conversation about or with Jewish Songwriters, one name repeatedly comes up in conversation, without whom, probably none of us Jewish songwriters would be here today. And that name, of course, belongs to the one and only Debbie Friedman. Debbie Friedman is considered by many to be the mother of contemporary Jewish music. If her name isn’t familiar to you, but you’ve entered a Temple, synagogue, or shul in the last half century, there’s a high likelihood you’ve heard her music. Though Debbie passed away in 2011, it just doesn’t make any sense to not have an episode of Jewish Songwriter dedicated to her. Professionally speaking, I’m not sure there’s anyone in history who’s had a bigger impact on Jewish music. Many of my guests spoke about how Debbie’s music impacted or changed the course of their lives. But what I love about the two stories I’ll be sharing with you today, and what they reveal, is that Debbie’s vision and impact stretch far beyond her music. They are not the only stories I was told and I’m sure they won’t be the last but you will hear them unedited exactly as they were told me. I hope you’ll enjoy listening to them as much as I did.
This week’s Torah portion, Parashat B’shalach, is read on Shabbat Shira, the Shabbat of Song. Music is highlighted on this particular Shabbat: In this portion, the prophetess Miriam leads the other women in playing their timbrels, and the accompanying Haftarah reading features the Song of Deborah. Rabbi Rick Jacobs discusses these texts and remembers Debbie Friedman z”l, the legendary Jewish songwriter, as her yahrzeit approaches. He shares his personal memories of Debbie, paying tribute to her profound gifts and their lasting effect on the Jewish world.

This week's episode falls on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, so we're marking this occasion by adding two new Hanukkah songs to our ever-growing list of winter holiday music. "Pass the Candle" by Michelle Citrin is an upbeat little tune perfectly suited for a Hanukkah montage, while "Not By Might, Not By Power" by Debbie Friedman brings a powerful performance and a message of peace.
