Welcome to the Mind Muscle Connection Podcast! In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Mike Ormsbee to break down the research on pre-sleep nutrition, protein timing, and how eating before bed actually impacts body composition, recovery, and sleep. Mike has spent over two decades studying nutrition and exercise physiology, with a strong focus on how protein intake around sleep affects muscle and metabolism. We discuss what the research actually shows about eating before bed, whether it helps or hurts fat loss, and how pre-sleep protein affects muscle protein synthesis and recovery. We also get into protein type (casein vs whey vs plant), how much protein you really need per day, and why total intake matters more than timing for most people. We also cover collagen supplementation for joint health and pain, what the research says about its effectiveness, and how it should actually be used in practice. Mike also shares how he approaches training and nutrition himself while balancing strength, conditioning, and endurance work.If you've ever wondered whether eating before bed is good or bad for fat loss, how to structure your protein intake, or whether supplements like collagen are worth it, this episode will give you a clear breakdown of the research and how to apply it. This week on The Food Professor Podcast, co-hosts Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois welcome two special guests for a wide-ranging, no-holds-barred interview: Axel Schwan, President of Tim Hortons Canada & U.S., and Duncan Fulton, Chief Corporate Officer of Restaurant Brands International (RBI). With Dunkin' Donuts announcing its return to Canada and Canadians passionately debating the future of their most iconic coffee brand, Axel and Duncan showed up ready to answer the tough questions. In a candid 40-minute conversation, Schwan and Fulton open up about Tim Hortons' "Back to Basics" strategy — the largest consumer research project in the company's history — and the quality overhaul that followed: freshly cracked eggs replacing frozen patties in breakfast sandwiches, 40% more apple in the apple fritter, more Venetian cream in the Boston cream, and the removal of artificial colours, flavours and preservatives across the menu. They share how Tim Hortons serves four million guests a day across 4,000 restaurants owned by 1,500 Canadian franchisees, why traffic is the one metric Axel watches daily, and how the brand is winning younger consumers with its Quenchers platform — including the imminent launch of Popping Quenchers — plus celebrity partnerships with Justin Bieber and Ryan Reynolds. The duo also tackles the controversy head-on: Is the wave of announcements — 400 restaurant renovations, 80 new builds, a national hiring campaign — a reaction to Dunkin's arrival? Fulton sets the record straight on the temporary foreign worker debate, noting roughly 4,000 of 110,000 restaurant team members are part of the program, and explains how AI is being deployed to improve the team member experience, from labour scheduling to order accuracy. A rapid-fire round covers everything from the biggest public misconception about Tim Hortons to the products Canadians want back, while Michael shares his own fun factoid: he helped invent Roll Up the Rim during his Dixie Cup days. But first, we start with the food and agriculture news of the week. Sobeys gets served as the Competition Bureau flexes its new Competition Act powers to investigate property controls in Canadian grocery. We break down Ottawa's newly published AI strategy and what it means for agriculture and food, where Canada's persistent data deficit threatens to undermine even the best intentions. Then, the screwworm fly resurfaces in Texas, prompting the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to take targeted action — and sending cattle futures and already-high beef prices climbing. Sylvain also reports from Delaware, where he keynoted a healthcare conference on food as medicine and discovered a surprising threat to American farmland: hundreds of AI data centres being built on fertile soil. Metabolism gets oversimplified all the time. Eat less, move more. That's the whole conversation. For a lot of people, that's where medical gaslighting begins. In this solo episode, I wanted to slow down and actually explain what metabolism is: your body's system for managing energy. Not a measure of effort or discipline, actually a biological process influenced by multiple factors at once. I walk through four of the most important ones: food quality, insulin signaling, the microbiome, and mitochondrial function. I also get into why the "calories in, calories out" model doesn't account for how differently your body processes various foods, and why nutrigenomics, the study of how food communicates with your genes, changes the way we should be thinking about nutrition entirely. We also talk about Akkermansia, a gut bacterium that's showing up more and more in metabolism research, and the role of polyphenol-rich foods in supporting it. The episode closes with a practical checklist you can actually use: healthy fats, eating a wide variety of colorful plants, reducing refined sugar and flour, incorporating intentional movement, targeted nutrients, and consistent sleep. The goal of this conversation is less blame, more clarity. Fewer generalizations that leave people feeling stuck or at fault for something that has a real biological explanation. Your tongue might be the most underused tool we have for understanding food quality — and for moving consumer buying power toward regenerative farming. Sherry Hess, culinary professional, nutritionist, and founder of The Flavor Remedy, makes the case that taste is not a nice-to-have. It is a powerful biological signal, and the food processing industry has understood this far longer than we have.We go deep on the five tastes — salty, sweet, sour, bitter, and umami — and on why ultra-processed food has been so effective at training us toward intense sweetness while stripping out complexity. Sherry argues that bitterness isn't a flaw to engineer out; it's the missing piece tied to polyphenols, antioxidants, detoxification, glucose metabolism, and satiety. The good news: chefs already know how to balance bitter with umami, fat, protein, and spice. We don't all need to go to culinary school — we just need to borrow a few of their moves. We also take apart the "chocolate steak syndrome": the fitness industry has built an entire pipeline of protein products with steak-level nutrition engineered to taste like chocolate and in doing so, trained a generation to completely ignore what flavour is actually telling them. For investors and brand builders, Sherry has a practical provocation: if a product claiming to be regenerative needs five or six flavourings on the label, it's almost certainly masking the low quality of what's underneathMore topics covered: the five tastes framework and what each signals biologically; why bitter links to immune function, glucose metabolism, and detoxification; how non-nutritive sweeteners disrupt the microbiome.Thoughts? One of the biggest challenges during menopause is heightened emotions, which can easily be mistaken for hunger. There are lots of weight-loss strategies, but perhaps one of the most important is learning to recognize the signals your body sends you to eat only when hungry and STOP when full, without relying on diets or external rules. Learning how to eat, and not diet, puts you in control, respects boundaries, and leads to lasting weight and life transformation. It is about building strength as a lifelong responsibility and understanding why skeletal muscle is the foundation of health, resilience, and independence across the lifespan.Dr. Lyon introduces the Forever Strong ethos and walks through the four foundational pillars that support a strong life: how to think, how to eat, how to move, and how to recover. She explains why information alone does not change behavior and why clarity, discernment, and disciplined action are the true drivers of lasting health.Throughout the episode, Dr. Lyon challenges conventional narratives around aging, nutrition, exercise, and recovery. She reframes longevity through the lens of muscle span, the length of time a person lives with healthy, functional skeletal muscle, and explains how physical strength supports metabolic health, emotional regulation, and cognitive resilience. This episode is an invitation to step out of confusion and into a clear framework for living with intention. Industrial farming has weakened soil biology, reduced food quality, and contributed to chronic disease, prompting renewed focus on soil health as a foundation for human health and agricultural resilience Regenerative agriculture rebuilds soil without reliance on heavy chemical inputs. This approach improves water retention, nutrient density, and long-term farm productivity In December 2025, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) launched a $700 million Regenerative Pilot Program to support farmers transitioning to soil-building practices The program uses existing conservation funds, public-private partnerships, and a unified application process to reduce administrative burden and make regenerative practices more accessible You can support regenerative agriculture through your daily food choices by prioritizing food from regenerative farmers, choosing pasture-raised meat and dairy, and avoiding ultraprocessed foods

Most men over 40 don't fail with nutrition because they lack discipline, but because they're focusing on the wrong things. In Part 1 of the 2026 Body Blueprint, Ted explained why most men over 40 age faster than they should. In Part 2, he broke down why weight loss alone doesn't equal health. In Part 3, he showed how men should train to preserve muscle and strength with minimal time. And in Part 4, he explained why cardio and cardiovascular fitness are essential for longevity—even if you already lift. In Part 5, Ted brings everything together by explaining how to think about nutrition for longevity, disease prevention, and performance after 40. Instead of rigid diets or extremes, he lays out a clear, evidence-based nutrition hierarchy that helps you cut through the noise and make decisions that actually support long-term health in 2026. â You'll learn: How to think about nutrition using a hierarchy instead of rigid rules Why energy balance is the foundation of longevity and metabolic health How excess body fat increases risk for heart disease, cancer, and dementia Why dietary variety matters more than micronutrient obsession Why nutrition never works in isolation from training, sleep, and stress What Ted discusses in this episode: (00:00) Introduction (02:52) The Confusion Around Nutrition (03:53) The Science of Nutrition and Longevity (07:04) The Big Picture Framework for Nutrition (08:12) Understanding Energy Balance (15:34) The Role of Macronutrients (20:48) The Importance of Food Quality and Micronutrients (23:45) Eating the Rainbow: Nutritional Benefits of Colorful Foods (30:35) Sustainability in Nutrition: Long-Term Success (32:31) Essential Supplements for Health and Longevity (42:43) Key Takeaways and Next Steps

Kyle Landry, a PhD food scientist with postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School, sits down to unpack the critical relationship between food quality and gut health. Most people don't think about their gut microbiome until it's already compromised, and by then, reversing the damage takes serious effort. Dr. Landry breaks down what's really happening when you walk through the grocery store, from the truth about organic produce to why the Dirty Dozen matters for glyphosate exposure. He explains how leaky gut develops, why your gut bacteria directly influence brain health and mood, and the surprising connection between chronic low-dose toxin exposure and conditions like Alzheimer's. This conversation goes deep on mycotoxins, aflatoxins, the Maillard reaction in grilled meats, and why making tiny dietary changes creates compounding results that transform your health over time. IN THIS EPISODE WE'LL: Discover why your gut microbiome is the foundation of everything, from neurotransmitter production to immune function, and how imbalanced bacteria drive systemic inflammation Break through the organic food myths and learn which produce actually requires organic purchasing (hint: the Dirty Dozen list matters for glyphosate absorption) Transform your understanding of leaky gut and how food allergens, pathogens, and bacterial compounds enter your bloodstream to trigger depression, hormone disruption, and even Alzheimer's disease Explore the hidden dangers of mycotoxins in everyday foods like peanut butter, how chronic low-dose exposure accumulates over decades, and why your body's detox attempts sometimes make toxins more dangerous Learn the inch-by-inch approach to dietary change that actually sticks, from adding fermented foods twice weekly to understanding why grilled red meat creates carcinogenic compounds CHECK OUT THESE EPISODES: Episode 116: Is Mold Silently Wrecking Your Health? In this powerful conversation, Sherry sits down with Josh Dech—holistic nutritionist and gut health specialist—for a deep exploration of joy, inflammation, trauma, nutrition, and the true root causes of chronic disease. What begins as a lighthearted exchange about energy and joy quickly unfolds into one of the most comprehensive, grounded discussions on gut health you'll hear—blending science, clinical experience, and humanity.Joy Is a State, Not a Circumstance Josh opens by sharing why it feels natural for him to say life is “great,” even during stressful seasons. Joy, he explains, is not the absence of hardship—it's a chosen state of being. Happiness may change with circumstances, but joy can exist alongside difficulty. This mindset alone sets the foundation for healing. From Paramedic to Root-Cause Healing Josh shares his journey from paramedic to holistic nutritionist, witnessing firsthand how Western medicine often manages symptoms without restoring health. A pivotal moment came when he worked with a 57-year-old woman on 26 medications who—through lifestyle and nutrition changes—went on to break powerlifting world records. That experience shattered the myth that it's ever “too late” to heal.Inflammation Is Not the Enemy One of the most important reframes of the episode: inflammation is not the problem—it's the signal. It's your body trying to heal. The real question becomes, what is the body responding to? You can't numb pain and expect healing; you must remove the thorn. The Gut Disease Spectrum Josh explains how gut dysfunction exists on a spectrum—from bloating, constipation, and diarrhea to IBS, Crohn's, and colitis. When root causes go unaddressed, irritation can progress into autoimmune disease, leaving many people mislabeled as “genetic” or “incurable.”Why Gut Disease Is Exploding In the last 30 years, gut disease has increased fivefold worldwide. Over 50% of cases are in North America, alongside rising pesticide exposure, ultra-processed foods, chronic stress, trauma, and hustle culture. This is not genetics—it's environment.Trauma, Stress & the Nervous System Josh explains how emotional trauma, grief, chronic stress, and even generational experiences can directly impact gut bacteria, immune response, hormones, and inflammation. Healing must address both biology and lived experience.Functional Medicine vs. Sick Care Western medicine asks, “What's the diagnosis?” Functional medicine asks, “Why did this begin?” Healing requires understanding history, not just assigning labels. Is There a Point of No Return? Josh answers clearly: only if an organ has been removed. Even autoimmune disease is only about 25% genetic. The rest is modifiable. He shares stories of people reversing decades of Crohn's and colitis—becoming symptom-free and medication-free.Nutrition Is Not One-Size-Fits-All Food is a tool, not a religion. Plant-based and animal-based approaches can both be healing depending on context, gut integrity, and nervous system state. How You Eat Matters Digestion begins before the first bite. Eating in stress shuts digestion down. Dr. Shustina shares her insights on diet, the impact of stress, and the role of supplements and herbal remedies. We're facing a fertility crisis that few people are truly talking about. Sperm counts have dropped by more than 50% in the last 50 years, infertility now affects 1 in 5 couples, and modern stress, toxins, and lifestyle shifts are making it harder than ever to conceive. But there is hope — and it starts with awareness. In this episode of HEAL with Kelly Podcast, I sit down with Ronit Menashe, co-founder of WeNatal, to explore the future of fertility and what every couple needs to know before trying to conceive. Ronit opens up about her personal journey of loss, discovery, and purpose that led her to create a company reshaping how we think about preconception health — for both women and men. Together we dive into the often-overlooked role of male fertility, the concept of “Trimester Zero” (the 100 days before conception that set the stage for pregnancy health), and why lifestyle factors like sleep, stress, toxins, and diet play such a powerful role in outcomes. We also touch on sensitive but necessary conversations around miscarriage, hormone health, birth control, and the emotional toll of the fertility journey. This episode is equal parts science, story, and soul — a guide to reclaiming hope, preparing your body, and reframing fertility as an opportunity for empowerment rather than fear. Whether you're just beginning to think about starting a family, navigating infertility, or simply curious about the hidden links between environment, lifestyle, and reproductive health, this conversation will leave you with knowledge, tools, and inspiration to move forward with clarity. In 2011, Coca-Cola introduced a white version of their Coca-Cola can. The drink inside was identical to original Coca-Cola, but customers drinking from this white can hated the taste. The white can made buyers think the Cola tasted worse. To explain why, I need to delve into the science of sensehacking. With Professor Adrian North, I'll explain why tennis players grunt loudly, why cars smell different when new, how a tablecloth alters our taste, and that music changes what you buy. --- Join the Nudge Vaults waiting list: https://www.nudgepodcast.com/vaults Join the Nudge Unit waiting list: https://maven.com/nudge-unit/course-cohort Sign up for my newsletter: https://www.nudgepodcast.com/mailing-list Connect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/phill-agnew-22213187/ Watch Nudge on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@nudgepodcast/ --- Today's sources Bschaden, A., Dörsam, A., Cvetko, K., & Stroebele-Benschop, N. What if the reason you're struggling with low energy, stubborn weight, or digestive issues isn't about willpower — but your Metabolic Type? In this episode of the Health Fix Podcast, I sit down with Martin Pytela, functional medicine expert and metabolic typing coach, to explore how your unique biology shapes the foods, supplements, and lifestyle choices that actually work for you. We each inherit strengths and weaknesses in three key systems: ✅ Autonomic Nervous System – Are you sympathetic dominant (anxious, wired, stuck in fight-or-flight) or parasympathetic dominant (burned out, chronically fatigued)? ✅ Oxidation Rate – Is your metabolism burning fuel fast or slow? (Think paper vs. logs on a campfire!) ✅ Endocrine System – Thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and ovarian dominance all shape your body type, hormone balance & weight patterns. When you understand which system dominates — and which needs support — you can use personalized nutrition and lifestyle strategies to restore balance, energy, and vitality. ✨ In this conversation, you'll discover: The power of biological individuality in nutrition Why pH balance is crucial for overall health How endocrine dominance shapes weight, metabolism & hormones The role of stress, detoxification, movement & emotional healing in restoring health Why personalized nutrition is the fastest path to consistent energy and resilience Martin's story is inspiring — after healing himself from mercury toxicity, he's helped over 12,000 clients uncover the hidden causes of their health struggles. His message is clear: true healing is possible, even for long-standing conditions.

Are you one of the millions of Americans who eat the Standard American Diet? Even if you're not, you're likely at risk of developing pre-diabeties, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation. But, DON'T panic, because today's episode is packed with simple steps to help you take control of your blood sugar and lower your risk of diabetes and chronic disease. On this Salad with a Side of Fries episode, host Jenn Trepeck tackles the hard truth: many people are already pre-diabetic and don't even know it. From hidden insulin resistance to chronic inflammation, Jenn breaks down how the American diet and lifestyle are fueling a national health crisis. You'll learn how poor sleep, stress, a lack of fiber, and nutrient-depleted foods undermine your metabolic health—and what you can do today to take control and manage your risks. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE:(00:00) Why is the Standard American diet the recipe for pre-diabetes and diabetes, and what is insulin resistance(04:18) Metabolic health connects to every system, and the ultra-processed food dilemma(09:48) Why supplements are important(14:30) Everyone is pre-diabetic, unless. Nutrition: protein, fiber, quality fat(21:31) America's fiber problem and the role of the microbiome(26:55) Our society is sedentary(30:35) The impact stress and loneliness can have on your health(34:56) Are you sleep deprived(37:30) Let's talk about the environment and toxins(42:07) If you don't like it, don't eat it and focus on preventionKEY TAKEAWAYS:Most people eating the Standard American Diet are already pre-diabetic due to high consumption of ultra-processed foods, even if their labs don't reflect it yet. Modern farming, soil depletion, and long-distance transport have stripped our food of nutrients, making quality sourcing and supplementation essential.Staying ahead of metabolic disease means taking daily action—moving your body, managing stress, eating well, sleeping, and staying connected. Even a short walk after a meal can significantly reduce blood sugar spikes. Daily activity improves energy and focus, builds muscle, enhances insulin sensitivity, and monitors glucose levels.Just because a drink is labeled “prebiotic” doesn't mean it replaces real vegetables. Whole fruits and vegetables provide a variety of fibers that support gut health more effectively than most supplements or processed drinks. You can't supplement your way out of poor nutrition. Supplements are only as good as their quality. Many synthetic options don't break down or absorb adequately, making them useless. Food first, then smart supplementation.Chronic stress triggers hormonal changes that lead to insulin resistance and fat storage. The damage builds over time because most people don't recognize their stress. Managing stress is just as crucial as managing diet and exercise.QUOTES: (08:56) “Our food supply is ripening while in transit, not connected to the vine where nutrients come from.” - Jenn Trepeck(18:54) “Variety is your friend. Eat the rainbow.” - Jenn Trepeck(23:30) “I'm a big fan of supplements, but you cannot supplement your way out of poor nutrition. Food first, then mart supplementation.” - Jenn Trepeck(39:36) “Next time you need to replace a mattress or a pillow. Let's make sure it's a material that isn't going to off-gas toxins.” - Jenn Trepeck"It comes down to default vs design because the way our world is set-up around us, the default would easily be the recipe for pre-diabetes and diabetes. The main idea is that a carnivore diet can resolve chronic inflammation and health issues that conventional approaches like calorie restriction cannot, as demonstrated by JT's personal experience and experiments.KISMETJT discovered that while on a carnivore diet, he could consume up to 4,500 calories daily without gaining weight, contradicting conventional weight management theories that focus primarily on calorie counts rather than food quality.EPISODE SUMMARYIn this episode, Dr. Philip Ovadia interviews Carnivore JT, a former sports medicine professional and fitness trainer who once firmly believed that weight management was simply about "calories in, calories out." JT shares how his health declined in his thirties despite following conventional dietary advice, then dramatically improved after adopting a carnivore diet. His personal transformation included the elimination of lifelong eczema, psoriasis, acne, and joint pain from previous sports injuries.JT discusses his self-experiments comparing carnivore eating with standard American diet consumption, finding he could eat far more calories on carnivore without weight gain. He addresses how scientific research is often influenced by industry funding, making it difficult for consumers to find unbiased information. The main idea that emerges is that food quality matters more than calorie counting, and a meat-based diet can resolve chronic inflammation issues that conventional approaches cannot address.NOTABLE QUOTE"I had aches and pains since I was in my twenties... And since going carnivore, I feel better than when I was 21.
