Shortwave radio stations broadcasting only numbers
POPULARITY
If you ever stay up at night scanning through frequencies on shortwave radio, there is a good chance you might come across something very odd and kind of creepy. You will find a station that is nothing but a disembodied voice reading off a seemingly random string of numbers. There is often an identifying sound or song which is played on a regular basis before another recital of numbers. These stations have no call signs or other identifying information, and no one has ever publicly claimed responsibility for them. Learn more about numbers stations, what they are, and how they work on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. In this intriguing exploration, we uncover the mysterious world of numbers stations. These enigmatic radio broadcasts, dating back to World War One, have transmitted coded messages to spies across the globe. Despite technological advancements, these stations are surprisingly active today. We explore (and listen to) the eerie broadcasts from the Cold War, where peculiar melodies and robotic voices in various languages hinted at clandestine operations. This journey through espionage history and technology promises to be both fascinating and chilling.

This week Ken and Mark receive an Enochian invocation broadcast from an old numbers station, the Old Ones are calling. Our guide into the dream world this week is director and writer of The Lovecraft Investigations, Julian Simpson. This week we discuss: How to modernise the tales of Lovecraft, the genius of Sapphire and Steel, why Numbers Stations are scary, Did Aleister Crowley meet Picasso, and much more. Joining me, dead but still dreaming is Mar(c)k Satyr Main theme by Simon Smerdon (Mothboy) Music bed by chriszabriskie.com Show Notes: Check out The Lovecraft Investigation on Apple here, and Spotify here. Check out Julian's Pleasant Green Universe shows via his site Fragments, Bad Memories, Fugue State, and Mythos 1, 2 and 3 Julian's other currently active show that features some characters from The Lovecraft Investigations ‘Aldrich Kemp' can be found via the BBC Limelight Series on Apple here, and Spotify here Julian Simpson Bio: I was recently emailed by someone complaining about how hard it is to find information about me and my work. I get this. It's not deliberate, but it's not deliberate either. There are probably ways to create a more accessible web presence, and to bring the various things I've worked on or been associated with into some kind of useful order. But that seems like quite a lot of work and I'm not wildly into doing lots of extra work. I really enjoy being a bit hidden and just getting on with my work. (For reference see Themis House in the upcoming “Who Is Aldrich Kemp?”, coming to your radios on February 18th, 2022.) That people have to do a bit of digging to find me suits me just fine. It's like a hazing process; the people who get through seem to be more interesting. So now you are here, this is what you might want to know: I am a London-based writer and director working in film, TV, and audio. In the past, I have worked, either as a writer or director or both, on Spooks (MI-5 if you're in the US), Hustle, Hotel Babylon, New Tricks, and Doctor Who. My TV work in the UK pretty much stopped dead in about 2016. This wasn't by design, but I wrote a TV pilot script that got a lot of attention in America and that has been where the majority of my work has been coming from since then. That work has been mostly writing and, because nothing has yet been produced (watch this space), the credits do not yet show up on my IMDb page and I am legally not allowed to talk about any of them. My official “work” website is at juliansimpson.uk. Many people have said they find this unhelpful. Those people might be missing the point. In or around 2019 I co-founded a storytelling/world-building company called Storypunk. That does not yet have a website but it will, soon, and in the meantime, we have made a sci-fi podcast series called TEMPORAL which is out to distributors as I type this (Feb 2022). I have also made a number of audio dramas, including the “Lovecraft Investigations” podcast series, details of most of which are on the Radio and Podcasts page and can be investigated in-depth on the Pleasant Green Universe wiki on TV Tropes and on my Wikipedia page. There isn't a veil of secrecy around what I do, but there is a veil of laziness draped over the promotion of it. If you want to find me, I'm on Twitter (@CartoonGravity), on Instagram (somewhat reluctantly) as @cartoon_gravity, and on e-mail at cartoongravity@hey.com. I also have a portfolio of photographs on Format. I'm repped in the UK by Sean Gascoine at United Agents, and in the US by Jeff Barry at Range Media Partners and Andrew Murphy at Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment. I live in London with my wife and daughter and two quite annoying cats. This site is a kind of public scrapbook of thoughts, ideas, and random nonsense. Now you know as much about me as I do. This week's weird history is all about the Numbers Stations that began during the Cold War. What are they? Why are they? Who are they? We have all the questions and absolutely zero answers. Can you debunk this crazy phenomenon? Let us know!
Since antiquity, espionage and deceit have always been crucial weapons of warfare. As technology and strategy have advanced over the centuries, methods for governments to deliver information and orders to their secret agents in the field have become more sophisticated. Yet, one form of cryptic communication implemented in the early 20th century has proven ever effective and relatively simple. With the advent of wireless telegraphy combined with a cipher technique called a "One-time Pad," militaries have been sending coded messages to their undercover operatives abroad since World War I. It wasn't until shortwave and HAM radio enthusiasts started noticing eerie and enigmatic broadcasts of spoken series of numbers or strange electronic sounds that these coded communiqués aroused widespread curiosity during the height of the Cold War. Although the use of public airwaves for clandestine messaging seems to have declined in recent years, listeners can still hear these top-secret instructions delivered to unknown spies, perhaps even your neighbor. One can only wonder how these spooky transmissions saved or cost lives or what world-changing actions they triggered. Join us as we delve into the mysterious world of spycraft and Numbers Stations. Visit our webpage on this episode for a lot more information.

NUMBERS STATIONS. Not a relic of the past. Intelligence agencies use shortwave to communicate with spies, agents and assets in the field. Right now. Today. Let's listen to a few and learn how to tune in from home -- for free. Since World War One, numbers stations have been transmitting coded messages to spies around the world using shortwave radio. And they're still transmitting right now. We're going to listen to a few in this episode. These transmissions sound strange to casual listeners. But to the right set of ears, they contain information that could change the course of history. In fact, numbers stations *have* changed the course of history. Countless numbers stations are on the air right now -- for what purpose, few really know. And the people that *do* know? They aren't talking. They're essentially pirate stations -- operating illegally. But, nobody shuts them down. And no government acknowledges they even exist. Let's find out why.

There are many numbers stations. It is widely suspected, and in some cases known, that they are used for communicating with spies behind enemy lines. But some, such as the buzz, are used for an unknown military purpose. Still others may be simple hoaxes. Some links for things mentioned in the show: Websdr is simply awesome. Basically it's ham radio receivers from all over the world that you can listen to from your computer. You can use this site to find receivers, and along with a number station schedule you can monitor for yourself in real time! There is also an option to record what you are monitoring. The waterfall display shows the frequency spectrum, and where traffic is at any given moment. Simply the best tool I have found, and it's free! Amazing. Can't get enough numbers stations? have a look at the Conet Project. You can listen to or download the cd's for free several places online, such as the free music archive. This 4 cd set has been sampled in music, movies and TV shows. Looking for a good website with tons of resources? Check out numbers-stations.com. This website has too much to mention, but there are descriptions for many of the known stations, sample recordings, articles, and much much more. Check it out! Priyorm.org is another great resource. Similar to numbers-stations.com, it has descriptions, samples, a schedule of current stations, and more! That should be good to start with, but if you want to go down the rabbit hole, there are a tremendous number of resources available online. Enjoy!
A strange journey this show is. The randomly assigned topic was "Fuel," which started a conversation about the band from the 90s, and ultimately lead to a discussion about Numbers Stations, radio stations that broadcast creepy messages intended to relay information to spies. It's a good one.

Secret spy messages are "hiding" in the airwaves all around us. It may sound like another Internet conspiracy theory, but this one is the real deal. Shortwave radio transmissions are among the most reliable ways for military, government, and intelligence agencies to exchange information. And every day for the last 40 years, one shortwave radio station called UVB-76 has been broadcasting static, beeping patterns, and cryptic Russian messages to ... someone. The contents of the messages are unknown — they are re-encrypted regularly. Anyone can listen, but only the intended recipient(s) can decode them. But that doesn't stop a thriving community of online listeners who stream these stations for the entire Internet to hear, in the hopes of finding patterns or clues. Alli and Lindsey speak with ZapdoZ, a YouTube streamer who also moderates a large Discord server devoted to cataloging the cryptic messages of this Russian military shortwave transmission. He explains the difference between Numbers Stations (for spies) and Military Stations (for armed forces), why streamers use spectral analysis to "look" at the sound, and how chatter on these stations may have hinted at the Russian invasion of Ukraine. When most of us think of radio stations we think of pop music and drive-time DJs. But those with shortwaves radios can access a whole other world of broadcasts, including police scanners, satellite signals and the mysterious “numbers stations.” These stations occasionally broadcast a bizarre string of numbers before going silent. To learn more about these “number stations,” what purpose they serve and how they were employed during the Cold War, Bill welcomes historian Māris Goldmanis and Dave Broyles director of CNA's Special Activities & Intelligence Program. Māris Goldmanis is a historian, co-founder and editor of numbers-stations.com/ and an avid numbers stations researcher. Dave Broyles is the director of CNA's Special Activities & Intelligence Program. He specializes in cyber operations and special operations, as well as experimentation and innovation in the Department of Defense. Dave is also the co-host of the CNA podcast AI with AI.

Imagine yourself in a dark room in the middle of the night. Your only source of light is the glow of the shortwave radio before you. Your headphones are filled with static as you slowly creep along the dial. Amongst the background hiss are chirps, warbles, the occasional faint staccato rhythm of morse code. And then you stumble across a female voice calmly, almost robotically, calling off a series of numbers and letters from the phonetic alphabet. Just as quickly as you catch it, the transmission ends and is replaced by an eerie piece of music or channel marker. Aside from the creep factor for the casual listener, Numbers Stations have for decades provided a nearly uncrackable code for both military and espionage purposes. Join us this month as we dial in the weird and discuss some of our favorite numbers stations. And a quick word of warning. If you're listening to this episode on headphones, maybe turn us down a couple notches because some of the samples we're going to play tonight have sudden loud bursts of noise. Consider yourselves warned.

This week on That's Strange... We come to terms with the fact that we are now old men who grew up with the internet and we discuss the things that have creeped us out or caused us not to get any sleep over the years. We have compiled a list of 10 of those things. We start with the Russian Sleep Experiment for our #10. This one may be fictional but it's a chilling idea nonetheless. Makes you wonder about the person who wrote it. Then, we move on to Bon Skinny which was a run of several TikTok uploads that are sure to creep you out. Next up is the SCP Foundation which you have to read to believe. Next is the Nibiru Cataclysm or Planet X which isn't just another doomsday theory, it's a bit more than that. Moving along to Project Serpo - this one is weird. Just read about it. Next up is Don't Hug Me I'm Scared which is basically Sesame Street but fueled by nightmares and horror films. Speaking of nightmare fuel - Salad Fingers is next. Watch at your own risk - it'll stick in your mind for a while. Then we discuss Numbers Stations and their weird plane in history. For our number 2 strangest - we discuss the Stanford Prison Experiment which was basically an exercise in power corruption and forced submission. Not a great concoction. This last one is not for the faint of heart - if you have kids or are particularly set off by hearing about children being mistreated, maybe skip this one... We round out the list with Harlow's Experiment and the unfortunate follow ups to it that really should never have happened. We are now part of a network / collective / mind share known as Straight Up Strange. They can also be found on Twitter @strangepodcasts. If you like our show, you're bound to find more shows to dig into there.

Since the 1970's a short wave radio station from Russia has been broadcasting a series of dull monotonous tones and foghorn like sounds 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Sometimes this is broken up by voices saying strange words like "dhingy" and "farm specialist". No one knows for sure what this radio station is or its purpose. Is it a dead hand signal for Russian nukes? A way to transmit secret messages to Soviet spies?Mike and Adriana discuss this strange tale and look into the idea of Numbers Stations as a whole. On this episode of Dead Hand Radio… Numbers Stations with my guest Andy Ussery. Runtime: 1:02 minutes Andy is a musician and a fellow podcaster who I met through Twitter. We were introduced through some mutual friends and found out we had some common interests including the topic of this episode. Andy's also produced some fantastic podcast intros. This is a topic I've wanted to cover for quite some time. In this Andy and I get into some interesting theories and share some fascinating facts about what numbers stations are, their history, who uses them and how and are they still in use today. We also share some recordings of the most cryptic numbers stations broadcasts available. By the end of our conversation, one thing is certain… There's a lot that is known about numbers stations, but there's a lot that is still unknown about them, and we're no closer to the truth about these mysterious broadcasts then we were before we started. However, it's my hope that by listening to this episode some of you will learn something new and maybe get inspired to research the topic for yourself and see if you can come up with any new ideas or information about the subject. Dead Hand Radio is a podcast about the Cold War. It's history and the effects it had on our culture, technology and the future of our world. This is Andrew Hall. Thanks for listening. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/andrewhall/message

It has long been speculated that there are radio stations all over the planet that operate in a simple and foolproof way for government agencies communicating with spies working undercover. Tonight we are going to discover a world of espionage that uses the air around us to communicate with imbedded agents that could be your next door neighbor. Josh from HAM Radio Crash Course introduces us to a hobby for some, and a way of overthrowing governments for others. Numbers Stations are a shortwave radio station characterized by broadcasts of formatted numbers, which are believed to be addressed to intelligence officers operating in foreign countries. Most identified stations use speech synthesis to vocalize numbers, although digital modes such as phase-shift keying and frequency-shift keying, as well as Morse code transmissions, are not uncommon. Most stations have set time schedules, or schedule patterns; however, other stations appear to broadcast at random times. Stations may or may not have set frequencies in the HF band. The first known use of numbers stations was during World War I, with the numbers transmitted in Morse code. Numbers stations were most prolific during the Cold War era, yet many continue to operate and some have even switched operators. The Czech Ministry of the Interior and the Swedish Security Service have both acknowledged the use of numbers stations by Czechoslovakia for espionage, with declassified documents proving the same. With a few exceptions, no QSL responses have been received from numbers stations by shortwave listeners who sent reception reports to said stations, which is the expected behavior of a non-clandestine station. Hey folks, welcome back to It Gets Weird! This week, Kyle addresses a long-beloved topic: numbers stations. Why have these mysterious shortwave radio stations been broadcasting for so long, some even for decades? Who's behind them? Is it aliens? Illuminati agents? Even more terrifying: does Russia have a Dead Man Switch radio station that'll launch a nuclear attack in the event something goes horribly awry? What does a Green Lantern say when he gets down on his knees? All this and much more!
Sound has an innate power to fuel the imagination. Sudden sounds in horror films are an intrinsic aspect of 'jump' moments. The power of sound is much more, however. In isolation, a sound of unknown origin has the power to induce fear and paranoia. Whilst some instances are mere audio pareidolia, others are possibly objective evidence for something more… Join Ansir & Sophia as they review famous, strange sounds. Why are there nearly untraceable radio broadcasts all around the world of seemingly random number sequences? What is their true purpose and who is behind them? Are these vestiges of Cold War spy-craft? A simplistic way for modern day terrorists to communicate? Or simply the most bizarre way to communicate with aliens this side of “Out Of This World” (you realize that was Burt Reynolds)? This week we head that the local RadioShack, get a cipher pad, and get to work. Plus, Conspiracy Bot decides he’s going to win the lottery (he won’t). We talk bad morning FM radio (we hate shows with too many drops and worthless characters). And we question how good Cuba actually is at this whole espionage thing (but man are they good at the sandwich thing). All of that and more on the podcast that isn’t in the spy game, but if we were we’d probably be a lot less James Bond and a lot more Austin Powers – Hysteria 51.
In Part Four we discuss the overhype that followed a NASA Theory Article once the media got hold of the information, which went from an energy project to a full-on doomsday device. We then go on to play a few choice samples and discuss the mysterious Numbers Stations.
