Nieuwhof is the former Lead Pastor of Connexus Church and the primary communicator at the Art of Leadership Academy. In this insightful episode, Nieuwhof points out alarming statistics: 96% of businesses fail within the first decade, 85% of churches experience plateaued or declining growth, only 9% of businesses achieve annual revenues surpassing $1 million, and a mere 2% of churches break the 1000 attendance barrier. So, how can one defy these odds and lead an organization to thrive?Nieuwhof delineates three distinct types of leaders for three markedly different types of organizations. While reaching level three—a feat attained by very few churches or ministries—may seem daunting, it is the key to resolving myriad issues and charting a course toward greater impact and success. Carey speaks candidly about what he learned from burning out and the wisdom he has acquired along the way that will help every single communicator to get out of the stress spiral and live well in the thrive cycle. Who is Carey Nieuwhof? Carey Nieuwhof is a former lawyer and founding pastor of Connexus Church.  Carey's passion for helping people thrive in life and leadership is evident in his latest book, At Your Best: How To Get Time, Energy And Priorities Working In Your Favor. Pastor Niewhof is also a gifted speaker and the best-selling author of, Didn't See It Coming: Overcoming the Seven Greatest Challenges That No One Expects But Everyone Experiences. From Carey: “I met the most amazing woman in my first year of law school. We got married before we graduated. By far...she's the best thing to come out of law school for me!  The second thing that happened was I experienced a call to ministry.  Honestly, the call confused me as much as it compelled me. I finished law and out of obedience, enrolled in seminary. In 1995, as I was wrapping up seminary, I started ministry as a student pastor among three little mainline churches an hour north of Toronto. When I started, one of the churches had an average attendance of 6 (not making that up). Much to my surprise I had discovered a community I'm still a part of over 20 years later. Our church has changed everything in those two decades...the music, the buildings, our governance, our mission, our vision....everything, really. We even left our denomination and now are a multisite church with three locations reaching over 1500 people each weekend. Along the way, I developed a passion for helping other leaders lead like never before.”

Over the last 15 months, our church has continued to be FOR people, and we’ve positioned ourselves to reach more people into the future. Lowering case counts and an increase in vaccinated individuals make us optimistic about opportunities to gather safely in the near future. So what does that mean for Connexus Church for the rest of 2021 as we reach people with the hope of Jesus? And how can you be a part of it?

What if we had to rethink the importance of getting new people to a building or a program... for the long haul? As part of a recent Unstuck Masterclass, Tony had the opportunity to interview Nona Jones and Jeff Brodie on the shift that's happening from engaging new people with in-person services to engaging them online. Nona serves as the head of Facebook's faith-based partnerships, and Jeff is the lead pastor at Connexus Church in Barrie, Ontario.  Nona summed up the situation we all found ourselves in back in the spring... and if we're honest... the pull most churches are feeling strongly right now: "Somewhere along the line of the history of the Church, we've come to define church as a place you go or a program you watch, and because of that, people have been slow to adapt to anything other than strategies that get people to a building. When you think about how social technology has been used thus far, it has predominantly been for marketing to get people to the building." Nona and Jeff each brought their unique perspectives as innovative leaders in local churches on how we can shift to engage and reach people in a digital culture. So in this episode, we're sharing portions of Tony's interviews with each of them that we think will give you some practical handles for doing so at your church as well.
