What drains our energy? What boosts it? How can we manage these factors to make the most of our time and feel our best every day? Today, we'll explore common energy drainers, how to identify them, and practical ways to boost your energy for a more productive, fulfilling year. Energy DrainersLet's start with the things that slowly but surely deplete our energy. Often, we don't even realize these habits or situations are affecting us until we're completely burned out. Identifying and eliminating energy drainers is step one in preserving your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Here are the top five culprits:1. Saying "yes" to everything* It's tempting to say yes to every request, invitation, or opportunity that comes your way—whether at work, with friends, or within your family.* The problem? You're spreading yourself too thin. By saying "yes" to everything, you're likely saying "no" to yourself.* This doesn't mean you have to reject every request, but be selective. Evaluate your time, priorities, and energy before committing to something. Practice saying "no" respectfully—it's a powerful skill.2. Overanalyzing* We've all been there—spending hours overthinking a conversation, decision, or event.* Overanalyzing can paralyze you with indecision or leave you emotionally drained. It's a thief of time and mental clarity.* The fix? Learn to trust your instincts. Make decisions based on the information you have, and remind yourself that not everything requires perfection.3. Messy living/work spaces* Our environment plays a significant role in how we feel. A cluttered space equals a cluttered mind.* Whether it's your living room, office, or even your digital workspace, messiness creates stress and overwhelms your brain.* Dedicate time to decluttering regularly—it's amazing how a clean, organized space can make you feel instantly lighter and more energized.4. Negative conversations* Spending too much time with people who complain, gossip, or dwell on negativity can drain you emotionally.* Energy is contagious, and negativity has a way of pulling you down.* Surround yourself with uplifting, positive people who inspire and energize you. And if you find yourself engaging in negativity, consciously steer the conversation in a more constructive direction.5. Overworking* In today's hustle culture, it's easy to fall into the trap of overworking. We push ourselves beyond our limits, thinking it will lead to greater success or recognition.* But overworking comes at a steep cost—burnout, reduced productivity, and strained relationships.* Work smarter, not harder. Set boundaries on your work hours and give yourself permission to rest and recharge.Energy BoostersNow that we've identified what drains us, let's shift gears and talk about how to boost our energy. These are the practices that recharge your batteries and help you feel focused, motivated, and happy. Here are five energy boosters you can incorporate into your daily life:1. Establishing clear boundaries* Boundaries are not selfish; they're essential.* Whether it's in your personal or professional life, clearly communicating what you can and cannot do prevents overcommitment and preserves your energy.* For example, don't check work emails during your personal time, and let others know when you need space or time for yourself.2. Self-care rituals* Self-care isn't just about spa days and bubble baths—it's about consistently doing things that nourish your mind, body, and soul.* This could be as simple as enjoying a morning coffee in peace, journaling, meditating, or reading a book.* Find small rituals that make you feel good, and make them a non-negotiable part of your routine.3. Time outdoors* Nature has an incredible ability to refresh and recharge us.* Even a 10-minute walk outside can boost your mood, increase focus, and reduce stress.* Make it a goal to spend more time outdoors this year, whether it's walking, hiking, or simply sitting in a park.4. Creative hobbies* Doing something creative—whether it's painting, writing, gardening, or cooking—can be incredibly energizing.* Creative hobbies give your brain a chance to relax and express itself, often leading to new ideas and inspiration.* It's not about being perfect at these activities; it's about enjoying the process.5. Exercise* Exercise is one of the most effective ways to boost energy. It releases endorphins, improves circulation, and helps you sleep better.* You don't have to spend hours at the gym—find an activity you enjoy, like dancing, yoga, or cycling.* Even a 20-minute workout can do wonders for your energy levels.Putting It All TogetherSo, how can you balance energy drainers and boosters in your daily life? Here are some tips to help you take action:* Start by identifying your energy drainers.* Take a week to observe what's draining your energy. Is it certain habits, people, or situations? Write them down.* Eliminate or minimize these drainers.* Once you've identified your drainers, come up with a plan to reduce their impact. For example, if messy spaces are draining you, dedicate time to tidying up.* Incorporate energy boosters into your routine.* Pick one or two energy-boosting habits to start with. Remember, small changes lead to big results over time.* Monitor your energy levels.* Reflect regularly on how you're feeling and adjust as needed. Life changes, and so do your energy needs.* Celebrate progress.* Every step you take toward managing your energy is worth celebrating. Acknowledge your efforts and enjoy the benefits of feeling more balanced and energized. As we step into this new year, let's make a commitment to ourselves: to protect and nurture our energy. By identifying and addressing energy drainers and incorporating simple, effective energy boosters, we can set the tone for a healthier, more productive year. Here are few from Archive to check:Thank you for joining me today! She explains how our energy impacts our productivity, happiness, and ability to make decisions. Lori introduces three key concepts: energy bleeds, energy blocks, and energy boosts.Energy Bleeds are activities that drain your energy, often leaving you feeling exhausted even before you start. These tasks can feel overwhelming and depleting, requiring all your focus and willpower.Energy Blocks are tasks that don't energize you but don't fully drain you either. They tend to be repetitive or mundane, like certain house chores or work tasks that don't bring joy but are necessary.Energy Boosts are activities that fill you with joy, motivation, and energy. These can range from spending time with loved ones, engaging in a hobby, exercising, or working in a flow state.Lori explains that by recognizing which activities fall into these categories, you can plan your day to ensure a healthy balance of energy-draining tasks and energy-boosting activities. ABOUT THE BOOK: The Energy Advantage (Link to purchase) How do you maximize your success and impact as a leader while maintaining your stamina and sanity? The answer doesn't lie in simple “efficiency.” It's not about making better use of your time and resources. It's about understanding how energy works and how to tap into its power. Many people live lives of intense and false emotional compartmentalization. For example, they strive to be one person in the corner office (invincible warrior) and another at the dinner table (sensitive spouse), and they struggle to keep those two lives from bleeding into and contradicting each other. But as it turns out, this takes tremendous energy and is almost always impossible. One person can't be two different people. So, how do you live an integrated life of fulfillment, purpose, and success? How do you create an alignment between your head, heart, and creative power that is in coherence with your true self? The answer is simple and complex: You must move from managing your time to mastering your energy. For more than a decade and a half, Ricardo Sunderland has worked with the leaders of some of the world's largest and most recognizable companies. He has learned firsthand that mental and physical energy are no longer all that is needed for success for today's leaders—at all levels in their organizations. Today's leaders must bring emotional and spiritual energy to their roles and create a space in which they and their team members feel safe to challenge each other, grow together, and thrive. Given this significant leadership challenge, leaders must gain an energy advantage. You will learn: What gives you energy? How to identify the energy blockers that are holding you back. Every situation presents a choice for you to unlock the transformational energy source within you. The path to gaining the energy advantage on seven distinct levels. Quick recap Summary Ricardo's European Roadshow and Leadership Observations Michael and Ricardo talked about Ricardo's recent European roadshow, during which he met with 250 leaders in seven cities. Ricardo shared his observations about the current state of leadership, noting that leaders are increasingly focused on implementing abstract concepts in their workplaces. Michael introduced Ricardo as a partner at Egan Zender, a leadership advisory firm, and a coach to senior leaders of major global organizations. The discussion was set to continue for 15 to 25 minutes, with the potential for Ricardo to share links and other resources. Managing Energy for Optimal Productivity Ricardo and Michael discussed the importance of managing one's energy levels throughout the day for optimal productivity and well-being. Ricardo shared his insights on this topic, emphasizing understanding what activities give one energy. Michael agreed, sharing his experiences with energy management and highlighting the significance of this approach in addressing current organizational challenges. Both agreed on following one's energy levels for maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Emotional Awareness for Productivity and Resiliency Ricardo discussed the importance of being aware of one's emotional state for optimal productivity and resiliency. He emphasized that understanding whether a day would be an 'energy giving' or 'energy taking' allows for intentional scheduling and increased clarity of mind. Ricardo also shared his recent experience launching a book and traveling to six European cities to meet with 250 leaders. He reported that the response was positive and curious about integrating the concepts. Integrating Personal and Professional Life for Success Ricardo and Michael discussed the importance of integrating personal and professional aspects of life to achieve fulfillment and success in the corporate world. They emphasized the need for individuals and organizations to understand their 'why' and focus on their unique strengths and energy levels. Michael shared his insights on creating an environment that allows individuals to be authentic and the benefits of understanding and managing one's energy levels. They also touched on the value of transparency and empathy in the workplace. Towards the end, they discussed the time-consuming nature of writing a book and the personal significance behind Ricardo's upcoming publication. Ricardo's Book Writing Journey and Purpose Ricardo shared his experience writing a book described as a labor of love. He emphasized the importance of connecting with one's purpose, following one's energy, and being intentional about one's desires. He also highlighted the need to accept the consequences of these desires. Michael agreed with Ricardo's insights and acknowledged the role of Harper Collins in the book's success. Leadership Book and Energy Management Michael and Ricardo discussed the impact of a leadership book and its unique approach to energy management in organizations. Michael highlighted the book's potential to create a positive ripple effect in society and businesses and its relevance for leaders managing constantly changing organizations. They also discussed the importance of creating a productive and engaging work environment where employees can operate in their sweet spot. Michael expressed optimism about the future, given leaders' open-mindedness and desire for improvement. Unexpected Reactions to Ricardo's Book Michael and Ricardo discussed the unexpected reactions to Ricardo's book, which focused on the concept of human energy and its leadership role. Ricardo shared that the book received positive feedback from large companies and was found practical and actionable. He emphasized the importance of incorporating spiritual energy into leadership to create a culture of vulnerability and strength. Michael agreed with Ricardo's views, highlighting the universal energy that connects all and the need to communicate with it for enlightenment. Ricardo's Book, Charity, and Remote Work Michael and Ricardo discussed Ricardo's new book, a game changer with all its proceeds donated to charity. Ricardo shared that he is promoting the book not for sales but to create a movement in partnership with his firm. Michael appreciated Ricardo's time and promised to share the show notes with his editor. They also discussed the impact of the pandemic on work and the adjustment to remote work settings.

In this episode, we're working on our element of Resilience and exploring the second Root of Resilience known as managing energy. The Roots of Resilience were laid out in one of Dr. Emmons book, "The Chemistry of Calm." We'll work through this foundational aspect of resilience, focusing on how we can keep our resilience tank more full by returning to our natural rhythms of rest and activity to help us feel more refreshed, engaged, and connected. We'll also learn about three "energy thieves" (oxidative stress, blood sugar dysregulation, and systemic inflammation) and how you can overcome those thieves to reclaim your natural energy cycles. The key strategies we'll focus on are: adopting a diet rich in whole foods, supplementing wisely with vitamins and antioxidants (if needed), and engaging in simple, enjoyable exercise like walking.
