Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's how large the Steelers need at cornerback is entering the 2025 NFL Draft. Through free agency, Omar Khan has taken two steps to fill in the gaps left behind when Cam Sutton and Donte Jackson departed, bringing in veteran former Philadelphia Eagles starting outside cornerback Darius Slay and ex-New York Jets two-way corner and special teamer Brandin Echols. So Echols can replace Sutton, Slay can replace Jackson, and call it day? Probably not. Slay is 34 and is a short-term solution. Echols, while projects to be a better fit inside, struggled while playing outside cornerback with the Jets. The stop-gap signings will give incumbent depth options like Cory Trice and Beanie Bishop another chance to win a job. But there's no reason they couldn't add a rookie to that mix as well, especially if someone like Michigan's Will Johnson falls to them. Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Gerry Dulac & Ray Fittipaldo report from the NFL combine in Indianapolis, where Steelers GM Omar Khan, coach Mike Tomlin and other member of the organization are scouting prospects for the NFL draft. How closely are they looking at cornerback prospects including Notre Dame's Benjamin Morrison, Michigan's Will Johnson, Texas' Jahdae Barron and Iowa State's Darien Porter? Could they still sign a cornerback in free agency? Or give Cory Trice Jr. a chance to start? What is it like watching the buzz for Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter up close? And could Penn State tight end Tyler Warren be selected in the top ten? Our duo tackles those question, then also reacts to Gerry's report that the Steelers remain in contact with RB Najee Harris ahead of NFL free agency next month. Is there still a chance he could re-join the backfield with Jaylen Warren? Or will the front office opt to replace him with a running back from this deep class that includes names like Ashton Jeanty, Quinshon Judkins, Omarion Hampton and others.
The Pittsburgh Steelers received two massive injury updates today, setting one CB up for a return, while one of their RBs may be heading towards a week off. Also, one former NFL GM had an interesting read on Mike Tomlin's comments about Diontae Johnson. Plus, DeShon Elliott is recruiting Ravens DBs to cross over to the other side of the rivalry. Tune in! Zach Frazier, Nick Herbig, Cordarrelle Patterson, Dylan Cook and Tyler Matakevich all appear to be poised to hit the ground running against the Washington Commanders in Week 10, and Cole Holcomb, Cory Trice, Roman Wilson, Logan Lee, Ben Skowronek and Montravius Adams won't be that far along after. Steelers insider Brian Batko from the PG joined the show. Brian thinks Mason McCormick may be the starter at guard on Sunday as the team awaits the return of Isaac Seumalo. How has Russell Wilson looked this week and is he any closer to playing? Brian doesn't think Wilson would be playing if the Steelers record was any different. Brian tried breaking down the rules of IR. How big of a loss is Cory Trice and when could he return?
Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. On today's episode, we discuss the latest injury news with Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, Isaac Seumalo, Cory Trice and Alex Highsmith. Mike Tomlin ruled out Highsmith, Trice and Pruitt. Tomlin also touched on Roman Wilson being inactive and having to jump on a moving train. Finally, we talk about why he won't fully name Justin Fields as QB1 over Russell Wilson moving forward just yet. Let's go for another Steelers Afternoon Drive and discuss. Omar Comin' – We listened to what Omar Khan had to stay to the Steelers media today at training camp. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo from the PG joined the show. Ray talked about some tough coaching George Pickens got today. How did Cory Trice look after the injury took him out last season on the first day? Our duo tackles those topics. Then Pirates insider Noah Hiles joins Christopher to react to the team's 12-2 beating of the Brewers on Tuesday night in Milwaukee. May 6, 2024 - Season 14, Episode 128 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Monday episode, Alex Kozora and I get right to talking about the upcoming rookie minicamp that the Pittsburgh Steelers will conduct later this week and how it does not appear as though CB Cory Trice Jr. will be eligible to participate in it due to CBA rules. We discuss the fairness of that and more. The Steelers signed WR Marquez Callaway to a futures contract earlier in the offseason and Alex and I discuss his chances of making the 53-man roster in 2024. We talk some about his career to date and his limited special teams exposure in the NFL so far as well. Steelers rookie CB Ryan Watts, the team's final draft pick this year, has some unusually long arms and we pass along some research that Alex has conducted related to that topic. Alex also recently posted a film room on rookie Steelers C Zach Frazier that we recap in this show. We take time to go over the veteran player winners/losers list that Alex put together based on what all has transpired so far this offseason with the Steelers. Several other minor topics not noted are also discussed in this 87-minute episode and we end it all by answering several emails we have received from listeners. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. In his weekly YouTube appearance, Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise joins host Adam Bittner to analyze the Steelers' moves in NFL free agency. Was GM Omar Khan's early flurry of moves to acquire Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Patrick Queen and Donte Jackson via the Diontae Johnson trade enough heading into the NFL draft? Or should he have done more to address needs at tackle, center, receiver and cornerback to give the draft plan more flexibility? Did he box himself into needing to pick a right tackle like Amarius Mims, Tailese Fuaga or JC Latham in the first round? Or is he quietly more confident than the public about internal options like Dan Moore Jr., Darius Rush, Cory Trice and Nate Herbig? Our duo tackles those questions and more, including: How should manager Derek Shelton handle his closer situation with David Bednar struggling and Aroldis Chapman throwing well? How important is it for the club to get Jack Suwinski on track? What should we make of Andrew McCutchen's early struggles? And do we really need to see this Penguins team in the playoffs after a full season of depth players failing to meaningfully help stars including Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin? Hour 3: George Pickens is talking a lot and compared himself to Michael Jordan. Is he allowed to? Bob Pompeani joins the show to go over Cory Trice's injury, Anthony McFarland's potential, Joey Porter Jr. possibly starting Week 1, Pickett vs. Deshaun, the Pirates winning timetable, and more! Poni had some baby incidents the past couple nights. Donny Football Debrief. Which network has the best NFL coverage? Intern Dom hates Kevin Harlan.
Legendary KDKA personality Bob Pompeani joined the show. Bob gave his latest thoughts on training camp and mentioned how bad he feels for Cory Trice, who was placed on IR yesterday after suffering a season-ending injury on the first day of pads. Pomp said Darnell Washington would rather pancake a defender on a run play than catch a pass down the seam for a big play. Pomp thinks Anthony McFarland has opened up a lot of eyes so far. Bob speculated on how much we will see starters play in the preseason. Pomp cannot imagine Joey Porter Jr. or Broderick Jones not starting early, if it's not week one. Pomp highlighted the accuracy from Kenny Pickett that looks like it carried over from the back half of last year. Bob then had some thoughts on the current state of the Pirates and when we could see this team finally win again. He thinks Paul Skenes will be a really good player and that he should start next season in Pittsburgh. He got into some of the strategy they should have going into free agency. Pomp also had worthy dad advice for Poni.
The hottest Pirates rumor right now is that Mitch Keller could be dealt ahead of today's 6 pm trade deadline. Do the guys want to see the team get a return for Keller if they can't get a deal done? Or should he be an important piece to the next playoff roster? Rookie Cory Trice went down at practice with what looked to be a knee injury. We also have a viral video of George Pickens from practice going over Joey Porter Jr. to haul one in. And Joey Porter Sr. is waltzing around the field today at St. Vincent – how do we feel about that? Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Mike thinks the Steelers are in a spot where most people aren't expecting much, but that's when they do their best work. The “experts” have them finishing last in the AFC North, but Mike does not see that happening this year. He is buying into the George Pickens hype and thinks he can be a target that requires double coverage. Mike's best-case scenario for the Steelers is largely dependent on what Kenny Pickett can do. He said we'll have an idea of where Pickett is about midway through the season. Mike gave his take on the Jonathan Taylor situation and RB dilemma around the league. He said there is clearly a different strategy with the position compared to all the others and Taylor waited too long to make a big stink of it. Mike talked about the rivalry brewing with the Jets and Broncos due to the coaches. If Mike had to pick, he thinks the Steelers will be better than the Browns because the Steelers are consistently competitive and the Browns always come up short.
93.7 The Fan Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. Jeff said he was on the other side of the field when George Pickens made the crazy catch in practice. Jeff said he's not shocked Joey Porter Sr. was at practice. Jeff talked about the Cory Trice injury and that he couldn't put any pressure on that right leg. Jeff highlighted Nick Herbig and his quickness that looks pro-ready.
2 hours until the trade deadline. Will the Pirates make any more moves? What direction are they going in? Does the front office give you any belief? And besides Oneil Cruz and Paul Skenes, who do you see serious promise from out of the young guys and prospects? Viral fan Big Ed Vega joined the show. Ed explained the story of his “PM Team” tattoo over his wife's name. He said his wife got “better real estate” on his body (his stomach). Ed talked about his plans to see the Steelers in-person this season. Ed thinks the Steelers go 11-6, but isn't sure if they win a playoff game. 93.7 The Fan Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. Hour 3: Is there a radio war here at 93.7? Dom Football Debrief. Is Caleb Williams the next superstar quarterback? One NFL player has a very weird habit. Is Cory Trice going to have a big role with the Steelers? PM Team Power Rankings. What famous celebrities could Intern Dom beat in a fight? Austin ranks the best Austin-related things. Mark Kaboly joins the show to talk about George Pickens vs. Joey Porter Jr. at Steelers training camp, Diontae Johnson being carted off the field, Kenny Pickett's progression at camp so far, and more!

Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers' minicamp is over, which means it's time to look at some of the most improved players over those practices. Three rookies made strong cases for the upcoming season in cornerbacks Joey Porter Jr. and Cory Trice, while Darnell Washington showed he could be a dangerous tight end even in a limited role. Mike Tomlin addressed some of the challenges his rookies face, but it seems for minicamp practices, they held their own. Also, Chris Carter says one thing that became clear is the locker room chemistry for the Steelers is growing with the more young players added to the room and the veteran leaders who seem determined to help cultivate a strong culture.CALL INTO THE SHOW AT 412-223-6644 or if international, e-mail your audio message to LOSTEELERSTOPICBAG@GMAIL.COMFollow Chris Carter on Twitter: @CarterCritiques.Theme music is 'Soul Kick' by Ceddy P, and 'Too Easy' by Nerdboy. Chris Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, hosts the Locked on Steelers podcast. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Joey Porter Jr. and Cory Trice Jr. as their new cornerbacks in the 2023 NFL Draft. Now during OTAs, they're turning heads for how they've been fitting in at practice. Porter and Trice as rookies are said to have been understanding and fitting into the Steelers' defensive schemes very well by Patrick Peterson, the Steelers' oldest cornerback in the room and a future Hall of Fame cornerback. Is the hype around the rookies for real? Maybe. But there's a factor that simply getting the defensive concepts within their understanding could be unlocked. Also, there's the potential for a weakness in the Steelers secondary, and it could be potential matchups with playmaker tight ends. The absence of Terrell Edmunds wasn't filled with safeties who are particularly known for shutting down that position. So how will the Steelers' adjust to that as a potential weakness against players like Mark Andrews and the Baltimore Ravens and George Kittle with the San Francisco 49ers?CALL INTO THE SHOW AT 412-223-6644 or if international, e-mail your audio message to LOSTEELERSTOPICBAG@GMAIL.COMFollow Chris Carter on Twitter: @CarterCritiques.Theme music is 'Soul Kick' by Ceddy P, and 'Too Easy' by Nerdboy. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo from the PG joined the show. The guys asked Ray about Patrick Peterson and what kind of role he's looking at this point in his career. Ray talked about Dan Moore getting reps at right tackle. Ray said this is a smart time to experiment with these things because if it doesn't work in shorts, it won't work in pads. Ray thinks Chandon Sullivan is the guy right now at slot corner. The guys asked Ray why Mike Hilton was left walking a few years ago when the Steelers haven't had an answer at slot corner since then. Ray said Cory Trice has turned some heads so far at OTAs and could be a 7th round pick that has a real future. Ray talked about his expectations for Cole Holcomb after the Steelers rehauled their inside linebacking group. Ray was asked who is more likely to be cut – Kevin Dotson or Kendrick Green? Ray discussed what type of options Calvin Austin can bring to the offense. Will we see a leap from DeMarvin Leal in his second year? Ray talked about how some things could work out along the defensive line.

Could a player on the roster right now like Damontae Kazee, Cory Trice, Keanu Neal or Sullivan be the answer? Or do the Steelers need to get another slot cornerback? Also, should slot cornerback be the free agent priority for the Steelers? Or should backup edge rusher and linebacker be more of the focus? Finally, a look at the Steelers' secondary as constructed brings lots of questions as to how the group will perform this year after leading the NFL in interceptions in 2022 and having so many changes in 2023. Purdue football insider Tom Dienhart joined the show. Tom broke down what the Steelers are getting in Cory Trice, who they took in the 7th round on Saturday. Tom talked about Cory changing a position the moment he came to Purdue and started as a freshman in his first game. Chris asked if Charlie Jones will be an issue for the Steelers after getting drafted by the Bengals over the weekend. Tom thinks Trice is more of a depth guy or nickel corner and will be used a lot on special teams early on.
The experts seemed to love the Steelers draft. How much do the odds makers? They still don't believe the Steelers are a playoff team. Do we? CBS NFL Draft analyst Ryan Wilson joined the show. Ryan loved the Steelers draft and highlighted Nick Herbig as one of his favorite picks. Ryan thinks the Steelers got great value all over the draft, but especially with Cory Trice in the final round. Ryan had Broderick Jones as his second offensive tackle, not far behind Paris Johnson Jr., who went 6th overall. Ryan likes the chip-on-the-shoulder Joey Porter Jr. might have after being picked to start the 2nd round. Ryan talked about what the Steelers are getting from Keeanu Benton and how some draft experts saw him entering the draft. The guys asked Ryan about Spencer Anderson, who the Steelers took a flier on with their final pick at 251.
