National CCW Reciprocity? What Would That Look Like? Earlier this week, we reported on CRPA's support for a national CCW reciprocity bill recently introduced in Congress. Similar bills have been introduced in the past, but the current political landscape provides greater optimism for its potential success this time around. So what would that look like here in California? A national law mandating legal carry everywhere in a state that has gone to great lengths to make it illegal to carry almost anywhere? Well that would be quite an interesting scenario. https://crpa.org/news/blogs/national-ccw-reciprocity-what-would-that-look-like/ Kennedy, Cornyn introduce bill to protect concealed-carry rights Sen.... This week, we broke a major story about Kamala Harris's record backing a total handgun ban in San Francisco. As District Attorney in 2005, Harris supported Proposition H. It banned the sale, purchase, and even possession of pistols by nearly every city resident. The measure never went into effect, but only because gun-rights activists won the court fight over it before that could happen. Chuck Michel, President of the California Rifle and Pistol Association, was the lawyer who won that case. He joined the podcast to discuss both the fight over Proposition H and the numerous other fights over gun restrictions he had with Harris during her time in California. He argued her support for several strictest-in-the-nation gun measures is more reflective of how she would govern as president than her recent remarks on owning a handgun herself. Simplifies comprehensive testing for the complex PNT challenges of the future, delivering real-time feedback for mission-critical testing scenarios PAIGNTON, UK - April 30, 2024 - Spirent Communications plc (LSE:SPT), the leading provider of test and assurance solutions for next-generation devices and networks, today announced PNT X, its next-generation positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) simulation system. Designed to deliver unprecedented performance and flexibility in PNT simulation and testing, PNT X offers the highest fidelity and most signal sources in a single test platform to address the future of enhanced autonomy, safety, efficiency, and precision. Watch our special podcast below. As developers look beyond GNSS alone to address increasingly complex positioning challenges, PNT X brings together signals including L-band, S-band, and alternative navigation (AltNav) signals, as well as industry-first Regional Military Protection (RMP) support, into one innovative, compact, and flexible system. With the power to run multiple signals from different PNT sources concurrently, the new platform simplifies comprehensive testing, delivering real-time feedback for mission-critical testing scenarios. "We have built PNT X with the future in mind,” said Adam Price, Vice President of PNT Simulation at Spirent. “It's designed to leverage the best technologies for each application, ensuring our customers can achieve deterministic testing at every stage of the development cycle, while saving money and reducing lab footprint. Most importantly, it can do all of this without compromising on performance. It will enable users to support cutting-edge application testing with more precision and simplicity than ever before.” PNT X brings together the broadest set of features and capabilities needed to protect future generations of mission-critical systems. These include the patented I/Q spatial awareness capability, an enhanced controlled reception pattern antenna (CRPA) testing interface, the highest available continuous dynamic range for jamming evaluation, and a standard update rate of 2 kHz for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and high-dynamics vehicle testing. Along with a host of other groundbreaking enhancements, these make PNT X the world's most advanced test solution for mission-critical systems and NAVWAR robustness. “An evolving and escalating NAVWAR threat landscape has made comprehensive testing of layered PNT solutions an absolute imperative,” said Rob VanBrunt, President/CEO at Spirent Federal. “PNT X accelerates product development cycles, enabling defense developers, governmental agencies, and aerospace enterprises to deploy mission critical PNT solutions faster.” Peter Terry-Brown, General Manager of Positioning at Spirent, added, “It's nearly 40 years since Spirent delivered the industry's first GPS signal generator, and today we are again leading the industry in the shift from GNSS to PNT. As the latest milestone in our commitment to support and propel the next generation of PNT-reliant technologies, PNT X ensures our customers can continue to deliver world-leading products that perform under all conditions.” For more information about Spirent PNT X, visit: www.spirent.com/products/pnt-x-simulation-system. This week, we're looking at a federal judge's ruling against the Golden State's latest "gun-free zones." So, we've got one of the lawyers who won the case on to explain it. Kostas Moros, who represented the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA), joins the show to recount his arguments and the judge's decision. The decision was a total victory for Moros and the plaintiffs. The judge enjoined all of the challenged sensitive places restrictions. He even went a bit beyond what the plaintiffs asked for and struck down the parking lot ban associated with many of those places. Moros argues the judge, in contrast with an opposing decision out of the Second Circuit on a similar New York law, used the proper analysis when approaching the question of where guns can be banned by default. He said many of the locations existed at the time of the Founding but had no such bans. Under the Supreme Court's Bruen decision, he said that means the modern regulation can't stand. The judge didn't stay his order. However, the day after we recorded the podcast, an appeals panel did. So, California's law will go into effect on January 1st as the case against it continues to unfold. But Moros said he and CRPA will keep fighting it as long as necessary to win. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I discuss our exclusive story on how Hawaiians are effectively barred from buying guns for the next few weeks. Special Guest: Kostas Moros.

This week, we're looking back at the Golden State. It's once again in the news because a federal judge has found one of its strict gun-control laws unconstitutional. This time, it was the ban on magazines that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition. So, we decided to bring on the head of the group that beat the ban. California Rifle and Pistol Association President Chuck Michel gave us his insight into the case. He said the outcome was expected because this was effectively a retread. Duncan v. Bonta was initially decided in favor of the gun-rights plaintiffs only for it to be reversed by an en banc panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals only for the Supreme Court to grant, vacate, and remand that ruling. The case is the first of those remanded by the High Court in the wake of the Bruen decision to reach a ruling. That ruling accelerates the magazine ban issue back up the chain in what will likely end with another Supreme Court showdown. Of course, as California's magazine ban was being tossed, Governor Gavin Newsom (D.) signed new restrictions on gun carry and a sin tax on firearms and ammunition. Michel explains the new laws and how his group has already filed challenges to them. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I discuss the Trump Campaign backtracking on claims he bought a gun while under felony indictment after finding out it would be illegal.

A portion of Towne Lake Parkway westbound will be closed for a little over two hours February 11 for the annual Guns and Hoses 5K, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office announced. The run is taking place from 7:15 to about 9:30 a.m. February 11 at Hobgood Park near Woodstock. According to the sheriff's office, traffic on Towne Lake Parkway and Wyngate Parkway will be affected. Westbound traffic on Towne Lake Parkway from Rose Creek Drive to Bells Ferry Road will be diverted onto Rose Creek Drive. Eastbound traffic on Towne Lake Parkway will not be affected. Wyngate Parkway will be closed to both directions of travel from Watkins Glen Drive to Towne Lake Parkway. Drivers are asked to use caution if traveling in the area. Cherokee County leaders, parks officials, Cherokee Chamber members and county residents gathered at Cherokee Veterans Park Friday morning for the opening of the county's new recreation center. The L.B. “Buzz” Ahrens Recreation Center, nicknamed “The Buzz,” is the latest project from Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency. The center, located at 7345 Cumming Highway in the Macedonia area of northeast Cherokee, is the second indoor recreation center for CRPA, in addition to its facility on Main Street near Woodstock. The center is over 30,000 square feet and has full-size and youth-size basketball courts and rock-climbing wall. The center also has an aerobics and dance studio, an open fitness area and two classrooms. There is additional office space for CRPA staff and a meeting hall area with an attached kitchen to allow for catered events. The namesake of the new $10.5 million recreation center, former Cherokee County Commission Chair Buzz Ahrens, was honored with a proclamation at the ribbon cutting ceremony. He spoke about the importance of the center. In continuing support of music education in Cherokee County, Cherokee Chorale has donated $500 to each of the seven middle schools in the school district. Choral teachers from each school received the big check on Jan. 31 by Chorale Founding Director Don Stafford, Conductor Scott Martin and President Richard Landolt. Funds from this donation would be used to support the programs by buying more and new music for students, paying for transportation to competitions and hosting special choral events by the school. Cherokee Chorale also offers the Judith MacMillan Scholarship, a $1,000 fund established in 2007 to go towards a Cherokee County student who pursues choral music performance or education at Reinhardt University. The Cherokee Chorale's next performance is at 4 p.m. on March 19 at the Falany Performing Arts Center in Waleska. Reinhardt's football team brought in a multitude of new faces during Wednesday's National Signing Day. Among the 54 signees — all from within Georgia's borders — were Jayden Ponder, a workhorse running back from Allatoona High School in Acworth, and a heavy focus on defensive backs. Reinhardt coach James Miller brought in 12 defensive backs, looking to continue the program's reputation of strong defenses. With key defensive players Kenneth Lowery, Jon Perry and others leaving, the Eagles also added eight linebackers and four defensive linemen. Among those defensive backs was Etowah's Jamir Maxime, who recorded 35 tackles, 14 pass breakups and two interceptions during the 2022 season. On the offensive side, the Eagles signed nine offensive linemen, eight receivers, seven running backs, two tight ends and two quarterbacks. They also brought in three recruits simply listed as “athletes”, which means they have the potential to play a variety of positions. A Canton businessman and lifelong city resident has announced his intention to run for the vacant ward 2 seat on the Canton City Council. Bryan Roach, 46, announced his plans Friday to run for the seat left by former councilmember Will Carlan in the November 7 city election. Roach said in his announcement that he will listen to the concerns of the constituents in his ward and the city as a whole, as well as provide fiscally responsible leadership. Roach said that, if elected, he would continue to expand and develop the downtown district and improve relationships with other local leaders and stakeholders. Roach is a community volunteer and serves on the Hospital Authority of Cherokee County for Northside Hospital Cherokee. He also served as the vice chairman of the Cherokee County Parks and Recreation Board of Advisors from 2011 to 2014, as well as volunteering as a youth baseball and football coach for many years. Arnold Mill Elementary School's garden has been revitalized by the work of the school's Garden Club and Boy Scout Pack 625, thanks to a grant given by the Cherokee County Educational Foundation. On January 28, the two groups came together to rebuild the vegetable garden located next to the gym, the Arnold Mill Elementary Garden Club announced. The spring harvest of this garden will be donated to food pantries in Cherokee County. Cherokee County educator Denise Forward and Boy Scout leaders Troy Kind and David Stern oversaw the project. The school also received donations from Super Slab Store, LLC for the lumber and Discount Express Tree Service for the mulch. Consumers across the globe are raising questions about how their data is used for advertising. Movies like The Social Network have raised questions about the use of consumer behavior as “the product.” Regulators and politicians are discussing a data dividend. Businesses argue that internet content is expensive and must be supported by advertising in order to be offered free for consumers, and advertisers want to reach custom audiences to gain a return on their marketing investment. But tracking users across multiple websites on the internet has been made more challenging by laws like the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and the California Private Records Act (CPRA). . Hear from David LeDuc, the head of government relations for the National Advertising Initiative (NAI) as he speaks with Dominique and David about the future of ad tech in a cookie-less world.
In the 1890s, efforts to form an association of salmon packers on the lower Columbia River failed. In 1898, however, businessman A.B. Hammond (for whom the town of Hammond, Oregon, is named) built a railroad from Goble west to Astoria. This connection with Northern Pacific Railway provided the Astoria salmon packers with a link to Portland and eastern markets, and they began shipping canned salmon east. Hammond recognized that the salmon industry was over-capitalized and in 1899 began buying, organizing, and consolidating packing companies into the Columbia River Packers Association (CRPA), sometimes known as "The Combine." Hammond's agent, Edwin Stone, acquired the Aberdeen Packing Company, Eureka and Epicure, Columbia River Canneries Company, Astoria Packing Co., Fishermen's Packing Co., and the J.W. and V. Cook and the Samuel Elmore facilities, as well as trap and seine sites, cans, labels, and trademarks. The first board of directors consisted of Samuel Elmore, George H. George, J.O. Hanthorn, B.A. Seaborg, J.W. Cook, M.J. Kinney, A.B. Hammond, T.B. McGovern, Edwin Stone, C.W. Fulton, G.C. Fulton, and William Gosselin. William Barker was named superintendent of canneries, with Samuel Elmore as company manager. From 1899 to 1924, the company expanded upriver and into Alaska. When Elmore died in 1910, George H. George became manager. Fred Barker, William Barker's brother, became manager in 1913. In 1924, the company reorganized as the Columbia River Packers Association, Inc., with William L. "Tule" Thompson, W.A. Tyler, and A.B. Thompson as the incorporating officers. In the early years of the Great Depression, several Alaska salmon runs that the company depended on failed and there was a drastic drop in market prices, which resulted in serious financial losses for the company. In 1935, CRPA obtained a loan from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, and other reorganization strategies began to pay off. By 1937, the company was showing favorable balances, and a year later the company began canning albacore tuna. By mid-twentieth century, the company had diversified into crab, bottomfish, and other species. In 1946, Transamerica Corporation acquired a controlling interest in CRPA, Inc. Tom Sandoz became president of the company in 1950, beginning a period of rapid expansion in both markets and packing facilities. With a partnership with Wards Cove Packing Company in 1959, the firm became the world's largest salmon packer. Castle and Cooke acquired the company by merger in 1961 and changed its name to Bumble Bee Seafoods, Inc., taking advantage of its most famous brand name. Tom Sandoz became chairman of the board in 1963, with John S. McGowan as president. Continued globalization of the fish industry sometimes resulted in the sale of corporate assets. The company downsized by selling its physical plants and fishing fleets, putting its emphasis on its brand name and reputation for quality. In 1975, the company headquarters moved from Astoria to San Francisco and later to San Diego. The Astoria canning facility closed in 1980. The company, now known as Bumble Bee Seafoods, LLC, is currently owned by Connors Brothers of Toronto, Canada. CRPA employees and managers established the Hanthorn Cannery Foundation in 2003. This organization seeks to preserve canning industry history and establish an interpretive center in Astoria. The foundation also maintains the Hanthorn Cannery building, the oldest extant waterfront structure in Oregon (built 1875), and the last original CRPA cannery. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/support
