Patriot League football standout, Curtis Harris-Lopez talks on this week's episode of @Notevend2 Harris-Lopez played four years at Holy Cross and in each year the free safety contributed to consecutive Patriot League titles. During his final year at Holy Cross, Harris-Lopez was an all-league player. Curtis dealt with injury during his first year resulting in a redshirt year. Now, after completing his career at Holy Cross, Curtis has one year of eligibility left. The all-league player entered the transfer portal and heard from plenty of FBS schools, including some Power 5 schools. The dynamic free safety narrowed his final schools to Hawaii, Wyoming, and James Madison. The prior year the Holy Cross head coach, Bob Chesney, along with plenty of Curtis' teammates left to join the JMU football program. This made Curtis' decision fairly simple. Now committed to play for the Dukes, Harris-Lopez has plans to continue the success with Chesney and prior staff that they had at Holy Cross. Hear about some of Harris-Lopez's favorite memories playing for the Crusaders, his perspective on the impact NIL is having on college football, his goals for the 2025 season playing for JMU, and much more. On February 2, 2023, writer William Paul Lazarus gave a virtual lecture about his book, Virginia's Civil Rights Hero: The Rev. Curtis W. Harris Sr. Just three months before Curtis Harris was born, the Virginia State Legislature passed the Racial Integrity Act, which banned interracial marriage down to “a single drop” of African blood. Harris was the sixth child of an impoverished sharecropper and his wife, living in a desolate outpost of the commonwealth while the sweeping regulation was passed by the most prominent men in the state. In time, however, Harris would lead the fight against this law and many others designed to maintain the control of the white majority over minorities in Virginia and in the rest of the South. His inspirational story follows him from Dendron to Hopewell and then to the forefront of America's civil rights battles, arm in arm with the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Arrested multiple times, beaten and discriminated against, Harris persevered to change entrenched racism and become the first Black mayor in his hometown. Admired and honored, he serves as a symbol of what be accomplished by a lone individual with the courage to demand justice. William Paul Lazarus hold an M.A. in communication from Kent State University and an ABD in American Studies from Case Western Reserve University. He has published a variety of books on Americana, including The Sands of Time: 100 Years of Racing in Daytona Beach; Guide to American Culture; and Virginia's Civil Rights Hero Curtis W. Harris, Sr. The content and opinions expressed in these presentations are solely those of the speaker and not necessarily of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.

These African Americans were citizens of the United States, but were not treated as such by the government of their own country. This is The Negro Leagues are Major Leagues, a podcast from Sports Reference. In the weeks to come, join sports historian Curtis Harris as he interviews a range of historians, researchers, activists, and others about a broad range of topics related to the Black baseball experience. We are joined by Curtis Harris of Pro Hoops History in discussing the life and career of Connie Hawkins, the New York City playground legend and ABA superstar who was unfairly blackballed by the NBA until his late 20s. We discuss Hawkins being one of the first above-the-rim offensive superstars, how his high-flying grace and acrobatics inspired Julius Erving and Michael Jordan, his incredibly huge hands and ball fakes, popularizing the finger roll, growing up in Brooklyn and his success on the playgrounds and at Boys High School, including a legendary battle against Roger Brown. We also talk about his recruitment to the University of Iowa, getting ensnared in a gambling scandal because of a tenuous association with gambler and former NBA star Jack Molinas, a false confession after weeks of interrogation by New York detectives, and being banned by the NBA despite never being charged with a crime. We also dig into Hawkins becoming MVP of the fledging rival league the ABL at age 19, playing with the Harlem Globetrotters, filing an antitrust lawsuit against the NBA, and winning a championship in the ABA with the Pittsburgh Pipers. We also discuss the settlement that led Hawkins to finally join the NBA, finding success with the Phoenix Suns, how he shined despite injuries taking their toll on his brilliance, his waning years with the Lakers and Hawks, finding meaning in his life after basketball, his sense of humor, and how much his Hall of Fame induction meant to him. We also play a what-if game for him joining the NBA in 1964 and how history might have changed. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Curtis Harris of Pro Hoops History joins us again to discuss the 1967 Philadelphia 76ers, the record-setting team that ended the Boston Celtics' 8-year championship streak, on the latest episode of the Over and Back Classic NBA Podcast. We talk about Curtis' project with the 76ers called Spirit of the Champion (http://www.nba.com/sixers/spiritofthechampion), commemorating the 68-win championship team that is on the short list of greatest teams in pro basketball history, and what it was like to attend the team's 50th anniversary dinner. We look at how the team fits at a key juncture in NBA history, when the ABA and expansion began to dramatically change the sport. We discuss how the franchise transitioned from the Syracuse Nationals in the early 1960s, how established stars like Hal Greer and Chet Walker adjusted to Wilt Chamberlain joining the team in 1965, the brutal playoff losses to the Celtics (including "Havlicek stole the ball" in 1965), what in Chamberlain's game changed in 1967, and how coach Alex Hannum knew how to work with superstars and bench players and everyone in between. We also discuss the smooth shooting and rugged defense of Greer, Walker's clutch scoring, Billy Cunningham springing all over the court, Luke Jackson's prowess on the boards, Wali Jones' perimeter freedom, and Larry Costello being the old man of the team. We also talk about the contributions of the tough Dave Gambee, rookie Matt Guokas, Bill Melchionni and Bob Weiss, and what ended up preventing the Sixers from becoming a dynasty. We look at Bill Walton and how revolutionary he was in his politics, lifestyle and on the basketball floor in the latest episode of Over and Back's Basketball Mysteries of the 1970s. The redheaded center was an amazing passer, defender, shotblocker, and crafty scorer with a range of smarts and skills whose Portland Trail Blazers seemed on the verge of a dynasty when Walton’s foot injury in 1978 led to a nasty divorce with the team. He took lots of media criticism for his anti-establishment politics and his counterculture lifestyle, especially before he won the championship in 1977. We detail the reasons he was a revolutionary force in and out of basketball and talk about the 1977 Blazers, why he was linked to kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst, being the first NBA player with a ponytail, his criticism of capitalism, his versatility, his simultaneous love but obsession with the game, how Portland came to embrace Blazermania, how Maurice Lucas ended up being the perfect complement, how Walton and Jack Ramsay saw the game in the same way, and the other major contributors to the Blazers (Lionel Hollins, Bob Gross, Dave Twardzik, Larry Steele and Johnny Davis). We also discuss a playoff series against Artis Gilmore's Bulls, how Lucas intimidated a replacement ref, a tough matchup against the Nuggets with David Thompson and Dan Issel, a sweep over a hobbled Lakers team with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and finally a Finals win over Julius Erving's Sixers with a wild brawl, a huge turnaround from a 0-2 series deficit, and classic duel by Walton and Erving in Game 6.
